Character Details

Physical

Windows 2.0-tan is depicted as a young girl with blue eyes, short, hime-cut black hair with two long locks and bangs. She wears a blue and white school uniform with lavender socks and black shoes, and a white headband whose ends have been tied in the shape of "2.0".

She is often depicted with leather gloves, tools, scuffs and dirt, reflecting her role as a stone-mason. [1]

Personality

2.0-tan is sensitive, shy and mature beyond her years. Though she had a trusting personality and cheery outlook earlier in life, she is now mistrustful and perpetually melancholy.

She deals with trauma from the breakup of her family and her subsequent exile, manifesting in bouts of sleepwalking and night terrors. [2]

History and Background

2.0-tan was born into the old MS-IBM family and lived a carefree childhood, getting into mischief and playfully facing off against rival Mac gangs. She was loved and cared for by her mother 1.0-tan and the family maid Xenix-tan.[3] She was especially close with her older stepsister OS/2-tan, who initially pitied 2.0-tan but came to respect her as a peer,[4] going as far as making a pact to stay with each other no matter what.[5]

Her idealism was damaged after Xenix-tan left, the official line that she'd retired suddenly not matching with OS/2-tan's eyewitness account of the event.[6] However, her doubts were assuaged by the birth of Windows 3.1-tan, and her new role as big sister,[7] even as she drifted away from OS/2-tan because of the latter's rigorous training.[8] 2.0-tan didn't realize that 3.1-tan was being trained to replace OS/2-tan, although OS/2-tan had suspicions.

Any remaining illusions were broken when the family was suddenly and acrimoniously split into separate IBM and MS factions. OS/2-tan tried to give 2.0-tan instructions, but was taken away before she could.[9] While 1.0-tan and 2.0-tan remained with the family for several years afterward, they were eventually banished,[10] living as wanderers amidst the chaos of the OS Wars and Unix Wars.[11]

2.0-tan and her mother eventually banded together with Amiga-tan, Apple II-tan and others, forming the Binteeji Renmei as a sanctuary for vintage OS-tans.[12] Here, 2.0-tan found the security and purpose her life had been missing, and friends who understand her.

Notes

  • Angelica (Gunslinger Girl) is cited as an inspiration for Windows 2.0-tan.[13]

  3. "OS-tan Families": 'She then meets off with a young OS/2-tan who loves to ruffle her hair, and later with the two DOS sisters. Before they head home, they go off to fish for a very civil, Musical-style face-off . . . with the local Mac Gang, but Xenix-san comes in to interject and takes the little troublemakers back "home" . . . But given the direction the company was already going in, the NT and 95 were pushed into training, indoctrination and conditioning almost immediately. Since mixing with their NON-belligerent relatives would've been counterproductive, it's likely neither pair was made to meet one another . . . "
