Whirlwind-tan personifies the MIT computer that formed the basis for most modern computers and directly led to the development of the SAGE air defense system. First begun as a Navy flight simulator project, when the Navy bailed out the Air Force stepped in to keep it alive. One of the first electronic computers, she is a pioneer in output display and an early user of magnetic core memory making her among the fastest computers in the world.
Envisioned in the 1940s as an electro-mechanical aircraft simulator, Whirlwind debuted in 1951 as general purpose electronic computer. The first user of magnetic core memory, Whirlwind was the fastest computer of its time and pioneered interactive computing. It served as the prototype for the Semi-Automatic Ground Environment and influenced the creation of the TX-0, PDP-1 and minicomputers as a concept.

General
Physical
Whirlwind-tan - often called Whirlwind-hime to denote her high position within the MIT-tan clan - is depicted as a bespectacled woman in her mid 30s. Somewhat on the tall side, she has long black hair (usually worn swept away from her face and tied into braids), bright blue eyes and speaks with a heavy Boston accent. Her typical attire varies, from work-wear consisting of dresses and labcoats, to ornate formalwear consisting of 19th Century-inspired style dresses featuring bustles and corsetry. One constant across her wardrobe seems to be accessories incorporating  black and white checkers, hair ribbons and vacuum tube-based jewelry. In her younger days she was a Naval Reservist, and thus wore the uniform of a US Navy Women's Reserve ensign, but since her dismissal she has avoided any association with her former service.
Whirlwind-tan is depicted as a wiry woman in her mid 30s, above average height, with pale skin, long black hair, and blue eyes. She wears rectangular glasses, decorates her hair with ribbons, and wears colorful dresses and lab coats. Black and white checkerboard prints are a recurrent pattern in her attire, as are vacuum tube based jewelry.

Whirlwind is an intelligent and amicable woman, though a hidden temperamental side has been hinted at before. She generally has a positive attitude in life, her only real "enemies" being the US Navy (for firing her) and the Air Force (for its perceived theft of her first-born child). She is renowned as an engineer and for her assistance on various period computer projects; among her greatest creations were her various children, as well as pioneering many technologies that would be employed by generations of computers to come.
She was born with a faulty heart which was later replaced, and wears leg braces, though they don't slow her down.

She speaks with a heavy Boston accent.

Later in life, worsening health and experimental surgeries caused her physical condition to deteriorate. She lost an eye and spent much of her time heavily bandaged.

Personality
Whirlwind-tan is intelligent, amicable, and likes to keep herself busy. Despite numerous setbacks, she has a relentlessly optimistic personality, and conducts herself with a degree of propriety that comes off as a bit old-fashioned. Despite everything she's done, she doesn't feel especially accomplished.

She has a natural talent for art.

Powers
Like SAGE-tan, Whirlwind-tan can sense non-visual spectrum electromagnetic waves. This manifests as more of a "spidey sense" compared to SAGE's radio frequency vision. Humans feel tingly or static-like to her, while computers feel more distinct.

Family and relationships
Whirlwind-tan has a modified clone, Memory Test Computer-tan, who acted as her personal companion and support.

Whirlwind-tan has three children. Eldest daughter SAGE-tan and middle child PDP-1-tan were made using materials from both her and MTC-tan. While CTSS-tan was not made from Whirlwind-tan in the same fashion, she was raised by her.

Through the various derivatives of PDP-1-tan, Whirlwind is regarded as the matriarch of the DEC faction.

She befriended a wide range of computers both at her institution and elsewhere, including Harvard Mark I-tan, Harvard Mark IV-tan, and DTSS-tan.

She holds a grudge against the U.S. Navy for abandoning her, and the U.S. Air Force for taking SAGE away, but holds little enmity otherwise. She considers EDVAC-tan something of a brat.

History and Background
History and Background
Early life
WIP
Whirlwind-tan was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, sometime in the mid-1940s, and fully matured by the early 50s. It is known that the was a US Navy (WAVES) reservist, but few other aspects of her early life have been documented.
Whirlwind-tan was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, in the 1940s. She was conceived of as an automaton but became embodied as a living girl through an unspecified process. Her creator and human "family" were particularly caring and involved in her upbringing, giving her level of normality despite the unusual circumstances of her life. Owing her experimental nature, she was born with a heart defect and dealt with pain through much of her early life.

Children
She made acquaintance of Harvard Mark I-tan, who was at the time the only other general purpose computer in town. Despite their different personalities, outlooks on life, and paces, the two became good friends. While Whirlwind recognized Harvard Mark I-tan as an example of what she might have become under different circumstances, she didn't compare herself to Mark I, but envied the purpose with which she lived her life.
By her own admission, Whirlwind's greatest legacy is the creation of SAGE-tan - to a point her daughter could be considered the reason to her existence above all else. Indeed, when SAGE's development was completed in 1959 she was decommissioned and left at the mercy of a group of computer scientists who kept her alive half out of sympathy, half to experiment on her unique physical properties. A series of experimental operations - the TX-0 project - improved her lifespan, speed and powers, but cost her numerous body parts as well as general mental and physical stability. Especially problematic were the coma-like states she fell in and out of for the next fourteen years.

Despite the dire consequences to her health, there were several beneficial effects of her transformation into "TX-0". Foremost among these, the creation of her second child, PDP-1-tan - whose 1959 birth would have never been possible without the knowledge gained during Whirlwind's experimental surgeries. In many ways, PDP-1 filled the nest left empty by SAGE's departure, and became a comfort and companion to the ailing Whirlwind.
In addition to her role as a research computer, she worked for the U.S. Navy but was eventually abandoned, causing her to avoid anything relating to the organization, or discussing what happened. Not long afterward, she went to work for the U.S. Air Force, beginning the work that her descendants would later continue.

CTSS-tan was born in 1961, but the details of her creation and relationship with Whirlwind-tan are yet-unknown.
Around this time Memory Test Computer-tan was cloned from Whirlwind as a purpose-made companion and caretaker. The two forged an intense bond with each other, romantic on MTC's part but unreciprocated by Whirlwind. MTC-tan donated her heart to Whirlwind-tan, improving Whirlwind's physical condition considerably at the cost of her own longevity. Together, they would have two children: SAGE-tan and PDP-1-tan, in a process that's suggested to have contributed to Whirlwind's later physical instability.

Unusually for the era, Whirlwind-tan's relationship with her daughters was not only close but mutually-affectionate despite intervening factors - distance, in the case of SAGE-tan, and worsening health with PDP-1 and CTSS.
Not having experienced a typical childhood herself, Whirlwind-tan didn't necessarily know how to interact with her children. Nevertheless she loved and cared for them. Whirlwind-tan could not spend as much time with SAGE-tan as she wanted, but was supportive and proud of her daughter. Her relationships with PDP-1-tan and CTSS-tan were likewise affectionate, if distant.

Death and legacy
Notes
Whirlwind-tan's health became steadily worse with advancing age, and by the 1970s she was in a comatose state more often than not. In 1973, she passed away, shortly after SAGE's final visit with her. Her slow decline and lingering death is suspected to have contributed to SAGE's eventual psychological instability.
Whirlwind-tan was originally described as a U.S. Navy WAVES ensign but this seems to have been dropped from her characterization.

Whirlwind's transformation into TX-0 inspired not only the creation of PDP-1-tan, but the creation of an entire new type of computer-tan: smaller, nimbler, more efficient minicomputer-tans, whose ranks would swell throughout the next few decades to the point of becoming the dominant computer class. In this way, all computer-tans of the 1960s and 70s can be said to owe their existence to Whirlwind.
While she shares a physical resemblance to SAGE-tan, her personality and communication style is opposite her daughter's.

She cannot drive, but enjoys taking the MTA (MBTA).

Because of her origins, she's distantly "related" to various mechanical computers.
