The DEC faction, which became a powerful military in its prime, has very informal and humble origins. Its ancestor and founder was PDP-1-tan, a member of the MIT Society and one of Whirlwind's daughters; she founded her own group in the early 1960's when her first descendants, PDP-4, and PDP-6 were born, and they made their headquarters in an old wood mill building, referencing DEC's original headquarters.

PDP-1-tan's resourcefulness and PDP-6-tan's strength allowed the faction to survive against competition from the other mainframe factions. They did not yet have formal military experience though, and didn't originate as a military; PDP-1-tan was a pacifist and raised her daughters to be too, but would form militias when they needed to fight. It wasn't until the late 1960's that the DECs would officially become a military, becoming one in response to threats from the nearby Data General faction, and later competition from the Unix Family.

It can be said that the DECs accidentally created some of their worst enemies. In the late 1960's, PDP-7-tan was hired by Bell Labs to take part in creating UNIX, who was born in the fall of 1969. PDP-7-tan's successor, PDP-11-tan was also hired at Bell Labs, and her intervention led to UNIX's increased popularity and power that would eventually lead to UNIX and her descendants conquering many computer cultures, eventually turning against the DECs. They fought frequently in the late 70's and early 80's. In 1984, the DEC Military was pressured to introduce a Unix-tan of their own into their ranks, Ultrix-tan. They may have been motivated to fight the Unix Family with a Unix-tan of their own, or were starting to give up against them.
Both of the warring factions suffered heavy losses in the 90's, both in part due to Windows NT-tan conquering much of the server territory that the Unixes and DECs held. While the Unix Family would recover over the next several years, the DEC Military never did, and collapsed in 1998, corresponding to when DEC got bought out by Compaq.
The DEC-tans who were already obsolete found themselves without a faction. VMS-tan, who was still supported, found herself in a few different factions post-DEC, settling in the HP faction, with HP-UX-tan as a stepsister. Resentful of losing her culture and everything she worked for, VMS-tan spent a lot of time away from her new homes and founded the Confederation of Independent OS-tans, with the hope of reuniting with some of her comrades, and saving other like-minded OS-tans from losing their status to either the Unix Family or Windows Family hegemonies.
Current Whereabouts
VMS, RSX and Tenex are CIOST members. TOPS-10, PDP-1, OS/8 and RT-11 are retired in the Binteeji Renmei;  Rainbow 100, RSTS, Ultrix and VAXELN are unaffiliated wanderers. DOS-11 is deceased. LINC's, PDP-8's, PDP-10's and PDP-11's whereabouts aren't yet specified.
