Quoteooh! Suspense! Will VMS-san's water attacks be enough to leave Unix all washed up?  (can not... resist the puns!)
Spoiler alert! No! Lol...

QuoteNot exactly sure when the OS Wars started, but I think it was around the time when Windows 95 was released.

You're close with those facts but System 7 was released in 1991 (although the last version, Mac OS 7.6 was released in 1997!) And also Mac OS 8 was released in 1997.

Oh, I see, I must have seen the latest release of System 7. I thought they meant the first release.

*facepalm*

QuoteDarn, have to leave it in another cliffhanger. ^______________^

The suspense is killing me,... at this rate, I'm gonna pop like a.....!! ^V^

OMIGOD...I hate ticks! Geesh! You've just hit on one of my biggest fears! Ticks are right up there with dentists, injections, rabid animals, gamma-ray bursts and the gathering darkness!

Okay....

I'll keep that in mind so I know when to... "protect"... you.  Fufufu... ^.^

But like I tell all my friends who are afraid of cute little buggers:

You're a million times bigger than it, and lyme disease is treatable in your neck of the woods, so do you REALLY need to be scared of the poor little itty-bitty ticky?  ^_____________________^

*C-chan POPS*

Oh right,... almost forgot,... still pretending to be a tick.  @@;

Well okay,... putting aside the fact that you're last two fears are something to do with gamma rays and dark stuff,... I still need to swoon on the latest comic.  ^__^

....

But really what else can I say but four carefully-chosen words?  ^^

"VMS HAWT, 'nuff said."  ^^

And with that,....

Sorry there Sempai, but there's a few other things that you need to be wary of ticks for...like TBC and Borelia. I actually was infected with Borelia when I was 11 or something - wasn't a pretty sight. Felt like I was gonna explode, seriously.

That must have been horrible!

...........

Anyhow, I've thought out the Linux-sama comic; maybe I'll post an outline of it later.

Techno the fox

Woah. That is...AWESOME

I mean it, Great Job Bella-san. This is to be the Unix/DEC version of Troubled Windows.

I see great potential in this.

*after reading the entire story thus far*

The suspence is killing me.

I simply love this manga, Awesome artwork, Great Storyline, and More.

Keep up the good work Bella.

Hey! Good to see ya Techno! I'm glad everybody is liking this comic so far, after all, it started as a kind of a test comic (to see how everything would go). I suppose I'm aiming at around 20-25 pages.

I was working on the next two pages; hopefully I'll post them soon.

---------

I jotted down my ideas for that Linux-sama comic I'll likely work on after this is done...

Some parts of this comic I know exactly what will happen, and some I'm quite fuzzy about. But I do have the early storyline of the comic (that part taking place between 1992 and 95) planned out better than the part set in the "present time" of around 1996/97.

A timeline of the comic as I have it planed:

1992: Linux-sama's farewell to Minix-sensei at the train station. While on the train, Linux-sama meets a Macintosh (trooper, maybe a file or program-tan or something; just some generic dude who's "fighting" for the Macs). This is mostly to give a glimpse into the political and social uncertainty of the time.
--Current time: In a flash-forward to late 1996 or 97 , we see an argument between Linux-sama and SCO Unix-tan about her place in the family. SCO-tan claims Linux-sama is a fraud; Linux-sama says she's had to work harder than most of them to get where she is now.

-A meeting between Linux-sama and Plan 9-san, at which point a rather hysterical Plan 9-san warns Linux-sama not to get herself involved with her family.
--Current time: I'm unsure (probably more of that argument...)

-More of Linux-sama's early life; convincing people she's not just a "usual" Unix-like, as the Unixes were quite despised by many at this time. Maybe some funny scenes where she's helping folks on a farm or some other menial work just to show her hard working nature ;)
--Current time: I'm even more uncertain...oh boy.

-ITS-san stops for a hitchhiking Linux-sama, and gives her a ride on her motorcycle. ITS-san admires her point-of-view; they get into a rather philosophical discussion at a stop along the way. When ITS-san drops Linux-sama off, she gives her a note directing her to the GNU People.

-Around 1993: We see the GNU people--a group of rather socialist, hippie types, determined to bring about a widespread renaissance of the freedom they lost in the early 1980s--having a discussion about the future of their group. They have plans for the OS-tan that'll lead their mission, and have already prepared everything she'll need: her outfit, weapons, the "sourcery", and a group of program-tans to assist her. All would be well, except they have yet to create this "GNU-sama".

Linux-sama follows the directions on the note, and stumbles upon the GNU people. She tells them ITS-san sent her, and much to their amazement, they realize that Linux-sama could work in lieu of their own "GNU-sama".

-After convincing Linux-sama that she could work as the leader of their grandiose crusade for freedom, the GNU people somehow endow her (through some highly ceremonious ritual of magic) with the open sourcery she uses today. Whether they merely summon some power she had all along, or imprint upon her a form of magic originally designed for their own OS-tan, I'm unsure of.

Naturally, this causes some distress among the Unixes; although they are too busy in the last throws of the Unix Wars to do much about it.

-1993-94: Linux-sama learns that her source code/DNA/whatever has been used to create, what are in essence, two daughters; she travels to see her children, Slackware-chan and Yggdrasil-chan. While kinda strange and awkward at first, this meeting will take a turn for the sappy.

-1994/95: At some point along the way, I think a fracas between Linux-sama and one or more Unix-tans should occur. I was thinking that perhaps Apache Server-tan should come into play here, helping defend Linux-sama against the would be attackers.

-Early 1996: We see a rather somber looking Unix-sama commanding a/some Unix-tan(s?) to "bring Linux-sama in". We, of course, assume that this is for the worse; yet Unix-sama warns her people not to harm Linux-sama in any way. The Unix(es?) approach Linux-sama, and while she/they claim they just want to talk, Linux-sama believes they are making another attempt on her life and fights back.

I won't say exactly what occurs, but suffice to say this will explain the Unix/Linux alliance

Late 1996 or 97: Things have been brought full circle, and we are back at our present time.

Aurora Borealis

I'm really liking those ideas! Bah. SCO-bouzu is such a brat, thinking that Linux-tan is a fraud because she is not part of the Unix bloodline at all despite being a Unix-like. And that Linux-tan has worked so hard to get where she is and get respect from Unix-sama (while some of her own children still get whacked by her rod on a regular basis) really shows that status and respect are acquired by merit, not birth! ;019 ;019 ;019

But as for how Linux-tan acquired her magic, I'm in favor of it all being acquired from the GNU people, more of how Linux-tan has really gone a long way since her beginnings!

Perfectly put, Aurora-san! When you think about it, Linux-sama is probably the most like "Unix-like" out of the whole family, at least in her early history. But don't tell the Unixes this, is pisses them off a lot >__<

QuoteBut as for how Linux-tan acquired her magic, I'm in favor of it all being acquired from the GNU people, more of how Linux-tan has really gone a long way since her beginnings!

Right again; Linux started as a very small, simple project, and look at how far it's gone.

Notes: Hey, VMS-sama can control water! But Unix-sama can make forcefields! In panel 4, that "shhhhhh" noise and the cloud is the water turning to steam. So apparently she can generate heated forcefields, as well.

As you can see, I was kinda experimenting with those aforementioned action lines. I dunno how it came out, though; I sorta like it.

Page 13:

Notes: VMS-sama confirms her adversary can create forcefields by throwing a rock at her (the industry known test for confirming a forcefield).

Panel 3: ZOMG get your cameras, peoples, Unix-sama is smiling! Which means she must also have access to the human emotion known as...j-j-joy.

Panel 4: Hey, so VMS-sama does have a Massachusettsan accent.

Panel 5: Unix-sama lies! Well, about the "inborn ability" part. We know where she got her power from, however -__-

Hi peoplez!

Nice.... plenty of stuff to review here.... ^.^

Cool!  Don't forget, the trooper has to look a little on the antiquated side.  Don't be afraid if its a 19th century look.  ^____^

Quote--Current time: In a flash-forward to late 1996 or 97 , we see an argument between Linux-sama and SCO Unix-tan about her place in the family. SCO-tan claims Linux-sama is a fraud; Linux-sama says she's had to work harder than most of them to get where she is now.

And SCO-chan is STILL arguing that, even as her company is still pretending that it's not filing for bankruptcy.  ^.^'

Quote-A meeting between Linux-sama and Plan 9-san, at which point a rather hysterical Plan 9-san warns Linux-sama not to get herself involved with her family.

Hopefully for the younger girl's safety (although 9-sama and Linuxs-sama are around the same age.

Quote--Current time: I'm unsure (probably more of that argument...)

Well Solaris-sama used to say the same thing to Linux-sama,... albeit not as politely.  That was before she turned into a little wannabe.  ^^'

Quote-More of Linux-sama's early life; convincing people she's not just a "usual" Unix-like, as the Unixes were quite despised by many at this time. Maybe some funny scenes where she's helping folks on a farm or some other menial work just to show her hard working nature

As a traveler, she probably would have needed to do odd jobs like that to get by.  It's a good thing you've watched Kino's Journey -- it'd make for good inspiration for the kind of strange lands and people she'd encounger.  ^^

Quote--Current time: I'm even more uncertain...oh boy.

Why not an argument with LinuxXP-tan, or at least the SUSE/Linspire/Xandros trio.  They may have proben they're not UNIX-like, but now they're trying too hard to be something else.  ^^;

Quote-ITS-san stops for a hitchhiking Linux-sama, and gives her a ride on her motorcycle. ITS-san admires her point-of-view; they get into a rather philosophical discussion at a stop along the way. When ITS-san drops Linux-sama off, she gives her a note directing her to the GNU People.

Fufufu!  you liked the idea.  ^____^

Quote-Around 1993: We see the GNU people--a group of rather socialist, hippie types, determined to bring about a widespread renaissance of the freedom they lost in the early 1980s--having a discussion about the future of their group. They have plans for the OS-tan that'll lead their mission, and have already prepared everything she'll need: her outfit, weapons, the "sourcery", and a group of program-tans to assist her. All would be well, except they have yet to create this "GNU-sama".

Or rather, they're getting impatient that their would-be champion,... GNU/Hurd-san,... seems to have no qualm about taking her sweet time.  Even today, she's not finished.  ^^;

QuoteLinux-sama follows the directions on the note, and stumbles upon the GNU people. She tells them ITS-san sent her, and much to their amazement, they realize that Linux-sama could work in lieu of their own "GNU-sama".

Well,... she has the same philosphy,... AND SHE'S ALREADY AVAILABLE!
Hell yeah they're gonna take her in lieu of "the other one".  ^^;

Given how spaced out GNU/Hurd-san is, I wouldn't be surprised if she never realized all her equipment was given away to a young pup.  Certainly the GNU people weren't gonna tell her.  ^^;

Quote-After convincing Linux-sama that she could work as the leader of their grandiose crusade for freedom, the GNU people somehow endow her (through some highly ceremonious ritual of magic) with the open sourcery she uses today. Whether they merely summon some power she had all along, or imprint upon her a form of magic originally designed for their own OS-tan, I'm unsure of.

I'm thinking that Linux-sama was trained in physical and intellectual prowess, but Minix-sensei made absolutely sure NOT to show her any of the strong UNIX spells, to prevent the young Linux-chan from being targeted much more mercilessly by the Unix Family.

On the other hand, all of the spells up until then were closely-guarded secrets, passed on carefully through the generations in a way that masters always reserved the best of spells for themselves.  In that manner, the magic would get weaker and weaker over time.

The "new" magic that the GNU people show her is completely open and well-documented... which seemed weaker and harmless at first, but had the potential of getting strong and stronger over time.

QuoteNaturally, this causes some distress among the Unixes; although they are too busy in the last throws of the Unix Wars to do much about it.

Of course, publicly, they'd downplay this considerably at first.  Not unlike how M$ is doing it now.  ^.^

Quote-1993-94: Linux-sama learns that her source code/DNA/whatever has been used to create, what are in essence, two daughters; she travels to see her children, Slackware-chan and Yggdrasil-chan. While kinda strange and awkward at first, this meeting will take a turn for the sappy.

OOH!!! OOH!!! OOH!!!  Considering she's still pretty much a child herself, this has GOT to be very very cute!!  ^v^

...

...in a... sappy,... kinda way.  ^^

Quote-1994/95: At some point along the way, I think a fracas between Linux-sama and one or more Unix-tans should occur. I was thinking that perhaps Apache Server-tan should come into play here, helping defend Linux-sama against the would be attackers.

I think this is a good way to demonstrate, for the first time, that the Linux girls aren't pushovers.  ^^

Quote-Early 1996: We see a rather somber looking Unix-sama commanding a/some Unix-tan(s?) to "bring Linux-sama in". We, of course, assume that this is for the worse; yet Unix-sama warns her people not to harm Linux-sama in any way. I won't say exactly what occurs, but suffice to say this will explain the Unix/Linux alliance

Kewl!  This will be like Unix vs VMS all over again.  ^__^

Only this time there's one clear advantage....

VMS-sama was powerful, but was also alone and demoralized.

Linux-sama, even then, was FAR from alone.  She had friends,... LOTS and LOTS of friends,...
Setting aside the notion of Strength in Numbers, that also leads to very high morale, and, thanks to her philosphy, the "Moral High Ground".  ^______^

QuoteI'm really liking those ideas!

Amen to that!  ^v^

QuotePerfectly put, Aurora-san! When you think about it, Linux-sama is probably the most like "Unix-like" out of the whole family, at least in her early history. But don't tell the Unixes this, is pisses them off a lot >__<

And with one back-handed comment, you've finally answered the age-old question of why UNIX-sama likes Linux-sama so much.  ^___^

But as you say...

shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.. ^.^

QuoteNotes: Hey, VMS-sama can control water! But Unix-sama can make forcefields! In panel 4, that "shhhhhh" noise and the cloud is the water turning to steam. So apparently she can generate heated forcefields, as well.

Fufufu!  She liked THAT idea too!  ^.^

QuoteAs you can see, I was kinda experimenting with those aforementioned action lines. I dunno how it came out, though; I sorta like it.

A little bit weak, but better conservative than over done.  Overall, the panel is simple, but sets itself up for a very nice experiment in dynamism in the fourth panel, where you add that brilliant aura by UNIX-sama's hand, her cool pose, teh action lines, that blurring by her left leg, and the cool whipping (and steaming) of the incoming waves.

BTW, UNIX-sama looking pensive in panel 3 is kinda cute. ^__^

QuoteNotes: VMS-sama confirms her adversary can create forcefields by throwing a rock at her (the industry known test for confirming a forcefield).

Panel 1 face is Visa-priceless!  ^___^
Poor thing looks so cute sweatdropping like that.  Kudos on the good use of action lines here to express shock.

Love the practical rock throw -- why waste energy, eh?  ^^

QuotePanel 3: ZOMG get your cameras, peoples, Unix-sama is smiling! Which means she must also have access to the human emotion known as...j-j-joy.

Oh don't worry,... she does actually smiles quite a bit (certainly in recent times).

It's just that... well,... you usually DON'T want to see her smile.  ^^;

...

Unless you're Linux-sama or Amiga-sama or any other of her close friends,... it's.... kinda like the famous Kiss of Death.  ^_____^;

If she's somber and/or indifferent, you're usually safe.  ^^;

And by GAWD!! I love what you've done to the owl ears!!  ^.^

QuotePanel 4: Hey, so VMS-sama does have a Massachusettsan accent.

Wow!  I never really pictured VMS-sama as a Bostonian until now.  That's so cute.  ^.^

We should make a Vector Linux-chan and give her a heavy Canadian accent, now that you've got me all started up. ^___^

QuotePanel 5: Unix-sama lies! Well, about the "inborn ability" part. We know where she got her power from, however -__-

And a mighty beautiful Multics Staff at that, if that beautiful drawing is any indication!  ^^

As always, uber-phenomenal work, Bella-hime!! ^___^

QuoteNice.... plenty of stuff to review here.... ^.^

Cool! Don't forget, the trooper has to look a little on the antiquated side. Don't be afraid if its a 19th century look. ^____^

For sure! I was thinking the train, however, would be very 30s or 40s ish.

QuoteHopefully for the younger girl's safety (although 9-sama and Linuxs-sama are around the same age.

Yeah, something like that; somehow I think she'd be one of the most affected by the Unix wars out of the whole family. Psychologically, of course, but maybe even physically (lemme put it this way--she wasn't born with that silvery white hair)

QuoteWell Solaris-sama used to say the same thing to Linux-sama,... albeit not as politely. That was before she turned into a little wannabe. ^^'

Oh yeah, Solaris and BSD-sama are going to be in on this fracas as well. Maybe even Minix-sensei, who'll bring her own sense of blunt truthfulness to the table.

QuoteAs a traveler, she probably would have needed to do odd jobs like that to get by. It's a good thing you've watched Kino's Journey -- it'd make for good inspiration for the kind of strange lands and people she'd encounger. ^^

Waaah! Nope, Kino's Journey is still on my to-watch list ;)

Still, I can always tap into my own experiences in the strange land of Rhode Island for inspiration if I ever run dry on ideas. XD

QuoteWhy not an argument with LinuxXP-tan, or at least the SUSE/Linspire/Xandros trio. They may have proben they're not UNIX-like, but now they're trying too hard to be something else. ^^;

Cause the current time is set in 1997, I don't think any of them (save SUSE) existed than.
Quote
Fufufu! you liked the idea. ^____^

Speaking of strange characters she may have encountered, I almost wonder if the CIOST had their submarine HQ yet (probably not, I think). Them giving Linux-sama an interesting trans-Atlantic trip could make for a fun story.

QuoteOr rather, they're getting impatient that their would-be champion,... GNU/Hurd-san,... seems to have no qualm about taking her sweet time. Even today, she's not finished. ^^;

I know...GNU/Hurd is almost like...a microscopic version of Multics or something. XD

QuoteWell,... she has the same philosphy,... AND SHE'S ALREADY AVAILABLE!
Hell yeah they're gonna take her in lieu of "the other one". ^^;

Given how spaced out GNU/Hurd-san is, I wouldn't be surprised if she never realized all her equipment was given away to a young pup. Certainly the GNU people weren't gonna tell her. ^^;

But then again, I don't think Linux-sama does have the same philosophy--not entirely, at least. The development surrounding Linux was always less ambitious and radical than the GNU side of things; I suppose Linux-sama would have always looked upon the GNU people as being a bit strange....in the best way, of course.

BTW, this chapter gives a pretty interesting history of the open source movement...

QuoteAnd with one back-handed comment, you've finally answered the age-old question of why UNIX-sama likes Linux-sama so much. ^___^

But as you say...

shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.. ^.^

I think this is a good time to quote The Art of Unix Programming:

Many of the hacker community's senior leaders were also Unix old-timers, still bearing scars from the post-divestiture civil wars of the 1980s and getting behind Linux as the last, best hope to fulfill the rebel dreams of the early Unix days.

REALLLLLLY don't tell the Unixes this. @______________@

NO WAI! Makes sense, though, now that she's got more of the benevolent, cheery Linuxes around. Plus she's seeing her kind take back the market one teeny bit at a time...be it the Linuxes, the more popular Unixes, or the OS Xes :P

Notes: Is VMS-sama a weakling, or is water just really heavy? I'll leave that up to the reader to decide.

Aurora Borealis

The showdown continues! I don't think that VMS-san is a weakling. Water is heavy after all, weighing about 8 pounds per gallon (which really adds up quickly)!

Come on VMS-san! Don't give up! V-M-S! V-M-S!

NejinOniwa

1 cubic meter of water (1x1x1) weighs rougly 1 ton, or 1000 kilograms. That's a LOT.
