QuoteThe showdown continues! I don't think that VMS-san is a weakling. Water is heavy after all, weighing about 8 pounds per gallon (which really adds up quickly)!

Quote1 cubic meter of water (1x1x1) weighs rougly 1 ton, or 1000 kilograms. That's a LOT

QuoteI hate lifting water. D:

I see...so either VMS-san is really strong, or she has some sort of force helping her out.

QuoteCome on VMS-san! Don't give up! V-M-S! V-M-S!

Wait until she tries a spell Multics-sama taught her...then some folks are gonna get REALLY PO'd...

Bella

As promised...

Page 16:

Notes: this spell VMS-sama is referencing is the "ring" spell.

Page 17:

I is pure evil! A flashback-in-a-flashback! I will give you three guesses who that gorgeous winged sorceress is...

Notes: "your own mother is a fine geomancer" is a reference to RSX-san, who has a talent at controlling air.

Page 18:

ZOMG Multics-sama! Wait, how did VMS-san and Multics-sama know each other...? There's one degree of separation between every OS-tan, I guess.

Aurora Borealis

It's a triple feature!

Aw yeah, flashback to VMS-san learning of the ring spell from Multics-sama! (I'd also like to point out that the perspective on page 18 panel 2 is really nicely done!) Could the ring spell possibly be VMS-san's trump card against Unix? (that is, if done correctly)

Awaiting reactions from the Unices in 3... 2... 1...

Alfamille

I believe this is the first time I've browsed this thread. Those comic pieces were good Bella!  Hope we see more. ;)

Siya

So, uhh...I don't get around to everybody's art threads as often as I should, but....I'm really enjoying your story, so far!  So, even though you might not always see me, know that I'm silently enjoying it every time you post something new. ^^;

C-Chan

Sorry, in the process of doing damage control to all my missing stuff.  Just dropped by to say "Hi", "OMG", "Swoon!!!!!!!" and all that jazz.  I'm going to enjoy SMOTHERING this thread with praise when I return.  ^__~

Bella

In the immortal words of the infomercial industry, wait there's more:

Page 19:

Notes: So obviously, this took place after Multics-sama's fracas with Unix-sama. I guess it could be thought Multics-sama wanted to teach VMS-san this spell because she foresaw that this young cadet and her daughter would inevitably cross paths one day...

Page 20:

Notes: Yep, more fun with action lines. I hope the proportion in panel 4 doesn't look to screwy, I was being a bit lazy and didn't want to redo it.

Quoteit's a triple feature!

I try to do some interesting perspective shots when I can...

QuoteCould the ring spell possibly be VMS-san's trump card against Unix? (that is, if done correctly)

Awaiting reactions from the Unices in 3... 2... 1...

Well...the ring spell probably would have been Multics-sama's (attempted) trump card against Unix-sama, but that didn't end up...so well...

QuoteI believe this is the first time I've browsed this thread. Those comic pieces were good Bella! Hope we see more.

Thank you! I'm sure we'll see more ;)

No problem! I'm glad you've had the chance to check it out :D

Quote from: "Bella"
-Around 1993: We see the GNU people--a group of rather socialist, hippie types, determined to bring about a widespread renaissance of the freedom they lost in the early 1980s--having a discussion about the future of their group. They have plans for the OS-tan that'll lead their mission, and have already prepared everything she'll need: her outfit, weapons, the "sourcery", and a group of program-tans to assist her. All would be well, except they have yet to create this "GNU-sama".

Linux-sama follows the directions on the note, and stumbles upon the GNU people. She tells them ITS-san sent her, and much to their amazement, they realize that Linux-sama could work in lieu of their own "GNU-sama".

-After convincing Linux-sama that she could work as the leader of their grandiose crusade for freedom, the GNU people somehow endow her (through some highly ceremonious ritual of magic) with the open sourcery she uses today. Whether they merely summon some power she had all along, or imprint upon her a form of magic originally designed for their own OS-tan, I'm unsure of.

First of all: the entire story sounds _doubleplusawesome_!

I think the hippies of the GNU-project don't only invoke already existing magic but imprint on her the magic, rms designed for the GNU-project: The GPL. Early versions of Linux were in a proprietary license, which basically made commercial use but even getting a compensation for the medium, Linux was on impossible. The GPL allowed it for people to get compensated for sharing which was an important step for her.

This is what I was leaning toward, too. Because Linux was but a kernel until the GNU project gave it all software that made it a true OS.

But, I read the early Linux was shared-source...

C-Chan

I have something a little better than a swoon tonight....

How about.... the first baby steps towards a fulfilled promise?  ^^'

All this fine art of yours has inspired me to try and get it together.  You really should consider posting the sketches, so that everyone can see who was responsible for this lovely young maiden's character design.  ^.^

I'll say more later....

*fops on keyboard*

Aurora Borealis

Very nice! I especially like how you did the eyes! The green+orange hair is unique and actually works well together! :D

Darknight_88

Just saw this in the recently uploaded box...

Not intending to spoil the fun of this thread, but this was the first thing that came to my mind...

Those hair flocks could kill someone >_>

srsly.

C-Chan

Ooooh,... soooo close....  But.... wrong insect.   ;079

And yeah, those things are INDEED lethal,... but fortunately for you, she's a rabid, stalker fangirl rather than a vicious psycho killer.  ^v^'

QuoteVery nice! I especially like how you did the eyes! The green+orange hair is unique and actually works well together!

Thank you Aurora.  Lately I've had the urge to play a lot with hair,... single-colored hair is SOOOO 1990's, after all....  `v'

In any event, time to write my response to Bella's epic winnage.  ^^

*starts typing*

Added after 5 hours 2 minutes:

=====================

Okay and now,... the long awaited response.  ^^

=====================

QuoteYeah, something like that; somehow I think she'd be one of the most affected by the Unix wars out of the whole family. Psychologically, of course, but maybe even physically (lemme put it this way--she wasn't born with that silvery white hair)

Oh noes!  I'm already fresh out of tears,... while I have enough to mourn the trials and tribulations of my beloved Plan9-sama?  ;@o@;

QuoteOh yeah, Solaris and BSD-sama are going to be in on this fracas as well. Maybe even Minix-sensei, who'll bring her own sense of blunt truthfulness to the table.

Yeah, I reckon Minix-sensei is kind of like a miniature version of UNIX-sama, given that she has no love for bull,... "biscuits"....  ^^

QuoteWaaah! Nope, Kino's Journey is still on my to-watch list

Oh for sure, bump that up on your to-watch list.  I did the same when you recommended Full Metal Alchemist, after all....  ^__~

QuoteCause the current time is set in 1997, I don't think any of them (save SUSE) existed than.

Sorry, keep thinking in terms of "present day" being now, not '97.

QuoteSpeaking of strange characters she may have encountered, I almost wonder if the CIOST had their submarine HQ yet (probably not, I think). Them giving Linux-sama an interesting trans-Atlantic trip could make for a fun story.

Nope, but doesn't stop VMS-sama from having a boat or something.  All the others, save perhaps for VxWorks-san, are land-luvers.  ^^'

QuoteI know...GNU/Hurd is almost like...a microscopic version of Multics or something. XD

In terms of power, yes.... cause I don't think she's that small.  ^__~

QuoteBut then again, I don't think Linux-sama does have the same philosophy--not entirely, at least. The development surrounding Linux was always less ambitious and radical than the GNU side of things; I suppose Linux-sama would have always looked upon the GNU people as being a bit strange....in the best way, of course.

Sorry, my mistake.  ^^
Might actually make for a more balanced "hero" character, since she's a bit unwilling in that respect.  It's not like a virtuous, heroic "paladin" that's uniformly boring and one-sided.  ^^;

QuotePerfectly put! I hadn't thought of it like this.

Well I think about it this way:

You have a health potion that requires "Eye of Newt", so it's very hard to get and expensive, making it an item that is rare and mainly reserved for an elite class.  But if the makers "publish" the schematics of this potion, everyone interested can learn WHY "Eye of Newt" is such a vital component to the spell.  That way, an alchemist can analyze it and suggest replacing it with Saltpeter instead, which is more plentiful and perhaps even more powerful.  But even if it's weaker, having the ability to create 1000 20HP potions rather than 10 50HP potions already becomes a decisive advantage.

That's only one simple suggestion,... so you can only wonder how much more the potion can be enhanced now that everyone can read and contribute their ideas to it.

QuoteAlthough there will be a fight between Linux-sama and those Unixes...I shan't disclose if the same will be said for her and Unix-sama.

Certainly by then, UNIX-sama will have had her change of heart, formented more by seeing the young "doppleganger" live the life she yearned for.

Quote
Many of the hacker community's senior leaders were also Unix old-timers, still bearing scars from the post-divestiture civil wars of the 1980s and getting behind Linux as the last, best hope to fulfill the rebel dreams of the early Unix days.

REALLLLLLY don't tell the Unixes this. @______________@

Case in point.  ^.^

QuoteFor the record, I'm fluent in Bostonian. Pahk dha cahr in Ha'vaad yahd! We'ah going to the moudan, to have a wicked good time out hawsback ridin'!

QuotePage 14

Notes: Yeah, I'm not so good at drawing fire. ^///^

Well... I'm actually too busy drooling at the skirt folds to notice.  *lecherous chuckle*  ^3^

Yeah, UNIX-sama is definitely hitting below the belt here.  ^.^
I adore the expression on VMS-sama's face,... a mixture of youthful insecurity with seething anger.

QuotePage 15

Notes: Is VMS-sama a weakling, or is water just really heavy? I'll leave that up to the reader to decide.

Well,... given I spent the last few weeks BUILDING A FREAKIN' LAKE........  Yeah, I would have to concur that water is damn heavy. ^^
Especially if it's soaked inside dirt to become mud.  ^___^'

Points of interest:
UNIX-sama hurling the fireball,... it's times like these I'm glad I gave her owl ears.  ^.^
VMS-sama in Panel 3:  looking cute even while putting up a last-minute defense.  ^___^

QuoteI see...so either VMS-san is really strong, or she has some sort of force helping her out.

Well yeah, with magic or alchemy, they have to be able to have the natural elements "move" by themselves.  Otherwise, she'd never be able to physically lift that much stuff, much like Edward wouldn't be able to pull whole pillars of rock from the ground.  ^^'

QuoteWait until she tries a spell Multics-sama taught her...then some folks are gonna get REALLY PO'd...

Eeep!  @@

Funny how in that shot she looks a lot more like NT-san than ever.  Tres cute!!  ^___^b
PANEL 2:  Is it my imagination, or did we go overboard with hair bangs in our characters?  Seems almost all of them have them (as they're a great way to hide ears).  ^.^

No problem, though, as it does help enhance her "greatness".
PANEL 3:  I'm actually glad you used a lot of Indian elements in Multics-sama's attire.  The jewelry in her hand certainly helps accentuate her "sorceress"-look.  ^^

You've done really well with action lines, and no Panel 4 is fine.  ^^
Given you did 20 pages in so little time, you have to be commended for the brilliant accomplishments rather than nitpick about the small details.  ^__^

And UNIX-sama's expression in Panel 2,... Visa-grade priceless.  A healthy shock of recognition and anger.  ^____^

QuoteOh noes! I'm already fresh out of tears,... while I have enough to mourn the trials and tribulations of my beloved Plan9-sama? ;@o@;

I have to figure out what she'd look like in my comic; she'd be younger, of course, and maybe have longer, darker hair.

QuoteYeah, I reckon Minix-sensei is kind of like a miniature version of UNIX-sama, given that she has no love for bull,... "biscuits".... ^^

She's doesn't even mince words with Linux-san; least we forget the microkernel/monolithic kernel brouhaha. Hawh, I wonder how we can fit this into the comic...

QuoteOh for sure, bump that up on your to-watch list. I did the same when you recommended Full Metal Alchemist, after all.... ^__~

It's been bumped up. Over the weekend I got to watch a bit of Neon Genesis Evangelion, and...yay...I watched up to episode 11 of Kino's Journey!

What a long, strange, existential, postmodern art-house odyssey it has been so far. I'm still trying to figure out the deep symbolism of some of the episodes @.@

QuoteSorry, keep thinking in terms of "present day" being now, not '97.

Or, perhaps, the storyline set in 1997 will be a flash-forward. I dunno, the first few "chapters" I may mostly stick to the early storyline...or even forgo the 1997 storyline (if I think it'll disrupt the main story too much)

QuoteNope, but doesn't stop VMS-sama from having a boat or something. All the others, save perhaps for VxWorks-san, are land-luvers. ^^'

You just read my mind! I thought of a fun little story where VMS-sama has a rather rickety sailboat. She gives Linux-chan a ride on when she discovers the girl has run low on funds and cannot afford a ship ticket. Along the way, Linux-sama's affinity for spears will be explained ;)

I don't know who else may be on the boat, though...maybe just one or two other CIOST members.

QuoteIn terms of power, yes.... cause I don't think she's that small. ^__~

I mean to say, both projects were very ambitious and their developers perhaps got a bit ahead of themselves; luckily, for the GNU developers, Linux came along...

QuoteSorry, my mistake. ^^
Might actually make for a more balanced "hero" character, since she's a bit unwilling in that respect. It's not like a virtuous, heroic "paladin" that's uniformly boring and one-sided. ^^;

'Zackly. Linux-sama has always been on the moderate, level-headed side, I think.

QuoteWell I think about it this way:

Even better explained ^_^

QuoteCertainly by then, UNIX-sama will have had her change of heart, formented more by seeing the young "doppleganger" live the life she yearned for.

Drats, you've spoiled it! But Linux-sama, of course, doesn't know this at the time and thinks she's incurred the wrath of Unix-sama O___O
