We don't remove wisdom teeth unless they're in the way. Then again, we're northerners, not westerners _W_

And I can't exactly BE afraid of dental procedures or medicals in general, after my 6 years of dentists playing house with my gullet and that icky episode with the eye poking.
Yeah.

i've had 10 fillings, so i'm no stranger to novocaine. as for wisdom teeth, nej, like you we usually don't remove unless required, but it's also a matter of personal choice. all 3 of mine were impacted, and thus HAD to be removed for the purpose of not causing further damage to the other teeth (one already pushed one of the teeth it was next to to the side).

so today, i was woken at 9:30 to accompany my sister to milton mills, NH to pick up her boyfriend. we went up with relatively no hitches (except for a precursor where we has to stop at an autobody shop where, upon opening up the hood, we discovered that we were extremely low on antifreeze and had no coolant; the man there was nice enough to give us both for free).
the way down, however, about 20 or so minutes into the trip we had to pull over as the temperature gauge had spiked all the way to the top. after opening the hood and letting it vent, we were on out way back down the highway. we had to repeat this process roughly every 5 minutes, untill we pulled off the highway to a gas station in candia.
at the station, my sister's boyfriend (alex), who had (correctly) assumed that there was a leak/problem with the radiator (we discovered that we were leaking antifreeze when we were at alex's house about 2 hours earlier), had gone in to buy some radiator stop leak, which is basically coolant with metal flecks in it (which serves the same function as platelets in blood). upon discovering that it wasn't there, the gas station/truck stop's owner drove him to an auto supply about 5 miles down the road, where he bought some and promptly used upon return.
back on our way, we were forced to make another stop on the shoulder between the exits. noticing that we were quickly approaching the towns of auburn and chester, as well as route 121 (chester being a town we were slightly familiar with), we decided to pull off and take backroads (a smart move). after we got back on, we drove what i'd estimate was another mile and a half (roughly 5 minutes), before stopping again. we repeated this process about 2-3 more times before we stopped in front of a church. me and my sister went in to use.....stuff where we discovered we were out of coolant. using what was left of the emergency water, my sister and alex went in to the church, and, filling up 2 bottles, dumped it in and we were on our way. the (almost) holy water got us through the rest of auburn and most of chester (roughly 15 minutes). we stopped 2-3 more times in this way, each stop taking about 20 minutes (for about 5-10 minutes of driving).
after awhile, we reached my aunt's house at about 4:30 pm. she invited us in. calling my mother, she advised us to say there, and to call the tow truck. we waited an hour and a half (roughly) before my mum came around. it took about another hour for the flatbed truck to show up, at which point we followed it to the auto shop in salem (about 2 towns away). after all was said and done, it took another half hour or so for my mother to leave a note for the people with information with what was wrong, and another 20 minutes to get home.

all in all, i spent about 11 hours out today. O___O;;;

(it's on if you TL;DR, but i just felt like telling my semi-hellish tale. :\ )

My my, aren't you lovely~

Mine were sideways.... so yeah, they kinda had to go.  Other then that I've never had a single filling or other dental work done outside of having four other teeth removed for various reasons.

Chocofreak13

@zen: that sucks o__o; hope nothing happened to your house ;^;
@stew: my sister had 4 teeth removed at once, once. but she has fillings, i'm pretty sure. xD

Holy fukken shit you guys, what's up with all the dental (and, well, medical-in-general) misfortune? o______o

Just about everyone in my family (near and extended AND adopted) has had major issues except for me..... Thank God. >____>

i'm just unfortunate? and live with a neglectful, abusive chain smoker? :\

could be. but you should get an oral xray to see if you have them. (you might not; every generation decreases the likelihood that we have them, but we're not to the point where they're rare yet.)

I still don't have any wisdom teeth. They never came in. Is that lucky?

Aurora-chan is magical and has good fortune. D:

Three of mine still haven't shown up, and they better stay that goddamn way. >____>

NejinOniwa

Broya is a beacon of good fortune? MUST RESIST INSTINCT TO MONOPOLIZE.

Well, my whole dental issue package comes from me failing to activate my brakes while at my second judo training session, and thus headbutting my left upper front tooth out in a very gruesome way. So yeah.

I have a really bad track record with dentists:

-My first trip at age five or so to get a couple of BABY TEETH that would fall out a year or two later filled/capped left me EXTREMELY DENTALLY PARANOID.

-When I was 12 or so my dentist found a small cavity in one of my back teeth and said "oh, we can take care of that at your next visit in a year." Guess what? Before that time, it was so rotted out that I nearly needed a root canal. (This motherfucker also said that I needed braces - god damned Florida Keys and their fourth-world level medical "professionals").

-When I moved to NH I went to my brother's dentist, a semi-senile old man whose practice was on a FARM and had a jesusfreak dental assistant. Don't get me wrong, I don't mind jesusfreaks... as long as they aren't FREAKING OUT ABOUT JESUS WHILE I'M GETTING GODDAMN NOVACANE INJECTIONS IN MY JAW AND HAVING DRILLS SHOVED INTO TEETH. Gotta admire the old guy's work though, the filling has held up very well.

-Then I started going to my brother's new dentist, who was a self-proclaimed sadist. She spent the entire exam telling me how I would - in no uncertain terms - need all my wisdom teeth out (I was like 15 at the time) and that I DESPERATELY NEEDED BRACES. My mental reaction was 1) Panic 2) FUCK YOU, I'M GOING SOMEPLACE BETTER.

But it got better!

-I found the dentist I currently go to. Actually, it's an entire practice, so I see different technicians/doctors each time. They uncovered a fact that none of the other doctors seemed to notice - namely, that while my teeth are in good health, my gums are abnormally receded. Like, at a medical-oddity-level. They say it's probably due to some sort of combination of stress, hormones, genetic predisposition and NEVER BEING TOLD BY MY PAST HACK-DENTISTS HOW TO PROPERLY BRUSH. Once a technician mentioned that braces might be something I consider in the future, but I told her quite bluntly that 1) NO GODDAMN WAY I'M PUTTING MYSELF THROUGH THAT and 2) My family is too poor to anyway. Nobody has ever brought it up again. I now go there twice a year - once for xrays and an exam, once for a cleaning - and it costs a couple of hundred dollars, but still, it's cheaper than having problems down the road + the mental anguish THAT would entail. (Seriously, you can't get a tooth pulled for less than $1000 here.) My parents and brother have/had a fuckton of dental issues, so I know I have to be more responsible with myself... I brush twice a day, floss, use a waterpik and fluoridated mouthwash (not that nasty alcohol stuff that just makes things worse). >__>
