Title: Translation Thread
Post by: NewYinzer on August 06, 2006, 08:39:19 PM
A few days ago, I thought about translating untranslated OS-Tan comics. Then I realized, I don't know Japanese! So, if anyone knows Japanese, would you mind assisting in translating comics? Here is a location chock full of untranslated comics:

http://www.otakubell.com/os-girls/Gallery/category.php?cat=4&expand=all

If you can translate these, would you mind posting the finished product on this topic?

Thank you and have a nice day

Oooh,... isn't that the Troubled Windows site?  I thought they already handled translation issues....  '__'

My own knowledge of Japanese is pretty basic (enough to sprinkle in my pics, but not enough to read manga) so at least I won't be of any help.

That won't do, Pig.....  That won't do..... ;___;

Yes, they do. So does iitran (http://iitran.secchan.net/img/res/543.html). However, they haven't translated anything for months. I was thinking that there was someone on these forums that had enough knowledge of Japanese to translate them.

Okay.. my Japanese is pretty rudementary at best. So, with Cori's help (and help from my other friend on one particular sentence -_-) we translated one.

Ohs those 98s <3

Just to make sure this thread is kept on the radar, how about we try something simple first.

This comic, for example, is one I'm sure the Captain would LOVE!  -v-

C-Chan added the following  16 minutes after last message :

Not much of a Task List, it seems:

1 - Make sense of Onomotapeia
2 - Translate DOSKitty's text bubble (has something to do with seeing, perhaps past tense [I saw it?])
3 - Figure out what the punchline or reference is.

Looks like my vision is coming true. As for the comic:

It kinda looks like Toshiaki is tying 3.1's bow. He ties them up like bunny ears, and DOSkitty goes nuts. The reasons:
1. It makes 3.1 look like OSX-tan,
2. It makes 3.1 look like a bunny, which DOSkitty likes to chase,
3. Some other reason which I'm not getting...

uuuuhhh...awesome work codi, awesome.
No, my knowledge of Japanese is 0 (zero, none), so I guess I won't be of any help -.-

As for that last comic posted...I think it goes like this:

1)Toshiaki finds 3.1, sleeping
2)Toshiaki starts to play with her ribbon
3)He gets an idea: tie her hair in a ponytail
4)Then, suddenly...
5))Bunnygirl!!
6)And DOS gets angry. (Reason? Unknown)

But that's only what I understood from the pics, this needs real translation.
Title: Translation Thread
Post by: rdhdtwns on September 23, 2006, 04:30:57 PM
すã,,,すã,,, (suya suya)
is an onomatopoeia for a gentle sleeping sound, the sound that 3.1-tan is making. So kind of like, "zzzzzz".

ã,·ãƒ¥ãƒ«ã,·ãƒ¥ãƒ« (shuru shuru)
is kinda like.. grrr since it's a sound, there's no real translation, but its kind of like a "shuffle shuffle" noise, since Toshiaki-sama is messing with her ribbon. Say it outloud, it makes sense XD;

As for "mi ta na", what DOS-neko is saying, I guess like.. "I saw that. *KITTY GLLLLAAARE OF DOOM*" cute kitty doesn't like anyone touching 3.1 ^o^

But yeah ._.;; take everything I say with a grain of salt.

[evil piggy laugh]  BWAHAHA!!!!  ^0^

Sorry my dear, but because of your reputation, we now take EVERYTHING you say with several grains of salt, plus some pepper thrown in just for the helluvit!  ^v^

Glad I posted this up for you guys to offer suggestions, since I didn't realize right off the bat that 3.1-sama was asleep (I just thought she was kinda... mellow and stuff....  Â¬.¬')

Two more things I should point out that may or may not be important:

1 - Toshiaki is trying to do something nice (tie her hair in a ponytail), so hence the shock to discover that the ribbons are literally attached to her head...  ^^'

2 - 3.1-sama with "bunny-ears" bears a passing resemblance to Devil Flonne from Disgaea.  Doubt it was the inspiration, but just thought it'd be interesting to point out:  ^__^

In any case, Codi-san's translation seems as good as any for now, so here's the end product of our love and labor.....  ^__^

O.

K.

XD

After some time, we uhm.. attempted.

対策 (taisaku) is "counter-measure", but since noone calls it "spyware counter-measure" overhere, we just changed it to "blocker" for simplicity's sake.

I think what this comic is saying is that 98's been eating a lot lately and not getting much sleep, so I think she's flashing-back to downloading ad-aware, and her and SE-tan have some fun with it. So when 95-sama says, "98s been eating a lot lately ne~" 98 and SE, in true ad-aware style, detect a threat to the system ^_~

Hahaha, no way ^^;; I'm not great at all x.x;;

One thing we're really good with is looking up kanji, hee. As for actual grammar and things, I'm horrible with it. But most of the time you can gather what's going on from the context of the comic strip and just knowing what most of the particles "de, ni, wo", etc. mean. (in our case, it also helps to know the OS-tans and their world.)
Also, Japanese has so many set expressions, when you start to memorize them, life becomes a bit easier, hee.

....and if one noticed we're translating fairly simple ones XD I like that particular series because it's easy to edit and has fairly simple dialogue.

Honestly C-chan, Spyware Blaster 98 is SO CUTE XD

Title: Translation Thread
Post by: Pitkin on September 25, 2006, 04:13:39 AM
I believe I'll be able to translate that one, NewYinzer-san. It seems to be very easy; I'll post my attempt by tomorrow (Finnish local time). However, I must warn that I'm not really a translator. ^^;

##edit: Shucks, I was a bit hasty, promising the translation. Unfortunately, the very last kanji (bottom left panel) doesn't ring bells of any kind, and I cannot really tell it from the context.

http://www.otakubell.com/os-girls/Gallery/galleries/Japanese/tw-XP_98s_multitasking-jp.png

The dialogue (and sound effects) are something like as follows (mistakes can occur)

1st frame (top-right):
98: "XP-chan's memory sure is great."
SE: "Really?!"

2nd frame (below the first one):
SE: "How is the memory so great?"
98: "It's possible to simultaneously perform so many different actions!" (multitask, this line is very clumsy as it is)

3rd frame:
SFX: "chuu, chuu" -> sound of the puppies sucking, how does one make these sounds in English?

4th frame:
SFX: "waku-waku" -> "sound" of SE-tan and 98-tan being excited or impressed; maybe it could be translated into "wow" or "whoa, there she is" or such?

5th frame (top-left):
98: "Oh, you dropped something!"

6th frame:
From left to right, the objects the girls are holding: "XP-only (or XP-exclusive) software", "minimum requirement 1Gb memory" (maybe the memory could be called just RAM)

7th frame, wind blowing.

8th frame:
XP: "How about we all ?????? tonight?" (there's verb 'to do' in the phrase, but unfortunately I cannot tell what she's talking about doing; 'to do' is used in countless contexts in Japanese)
98&SE: "Yaaay!"

If anyone's able to figure out the mysterious kanji with 'kin' radical on the left, or otherwise improve my rather clumsy translation, it'd be great. ^^;;

Title: Translation Thread
Post by: rdhdtwns on September 25, 2006, 08:06:03 PM
Yeah ^o^v Go Pitkin!

We think..
お鍋 = o-nabe (o being the honorific for nouns) = nabe, being "pot", but onabe being a potluck dinner. That is to say, they all share the food, or in the OS-tan's case, "memory" tonight. Since 98 and SE wouldn't be able to handle that kinda stuff, obviously. XD

So you were right about the kin radical, as pots are made out of copper most of the time ^^

So.. "Tonight let's all share (dinner)" .. kinda.. in a really loose way, since its a double entendre.

QuoteSo.. "Tonight let's all share (dinner)" .. kinda.. in a really loose way, since its a double entendre.

Heh heh. I see what you mean...

*sneezes*

...must get over cold. Someday it would be nice to know Japanese. But by the time I would make it to the international workplace, Japanese would be as useful as Chinese, French, or German (I believe in a global economy, not a US, PRC, JR, or UK-centric economy).
Title: Translation Thread
Post by: C-Chan on September 26, 2006, 12:25:15 AM
(Careful now, globalization as it stands now is a double-edged sword.  ^^')

Quote(BTW, what does DESU mean?)

To put it simplistically, consider it the "is", "am" or "are" of a sentence.

As aimple example:

Watashi wa genki desu

Could be transliterated to "I" (formal) "well" "am".

Or "I am well."

(or depending on the context and manner in which you say it, "I am BURSTING with awesome, C-chan-style energy!" ^V^)

Wow, Pitkin does translations too!!  ^v^
Maybe OS-Tan Collections CAN have its niche market in comic translations!  ^v^

If not for the precarious time commitment and the fact that we're still relatively outgunned, I'd be almost tempted to ask Otakubell to eat their heart out.  -v-'

In any case, based on Pitkin and Codi-san's remarkable contributions, I'll see about transcribing the working translation onto the comic itself.  Just to get a feel for it....  -v-

Alright, this one I find trickier than the first one I tried, so I hope Codi-san (or someone else ^^) will be able to somehow improve this crude translation of mine.

First frame:
Inu-T: "Say, what're those thingies on everyone's heads, wafun?" ['Being a dog, Inu-T adds "wan" or "wafun" (sound of dog barking) after everything she says; should it be translated into English, and whether to put it at the end or to the beginning, I cannot really answer ##EDIT: Maybe the "Woof" or "Arf" sound could replace the "Say" in the very beginning, as in "Arf, what're those thingies on everyone's heads, woof?" ^^;]
Sign (with arrows pointing at characters' heads): "Those"
ME: "Yeah..."
(ME outside the left-most speech bubble: "Now that you mention it...")

Second frame:
ME: "Let's test and try removing them!?" (I think it's literally "As a test, I'll remove them and see!" Maybe "Let's see what happens if I take them off!" would be alright.)
SFX above the sleeping girls: "Zzzz..." or *snore* (the former sounds better to me ^^; )

Third frame:
Coloured SFX: Sounds of hitting one's head (or something else) against walls. (How does one say that in English? "Bang"? "Goo~~"? "Gang"? <- those are the Japanese SFX)
Redhead character: "Owwww..."
Homeko: "Oh dear..." (Maybe "What the...?" or "Goodness..." might be alternatives)

Fourth frame:
ME/Inu-T: "They were that important?!" (Literally something like, "Very important for proper functioning?!" or maybe, "Essential for working right?!")
98: "Eeek!"
XP: "It hurts!" (Or maybe "Owwieeee..." or "Hurts baaaaad...!")
SFX: Again, sounds of hitting oneself against something

So, err... there. ^^;

I might take a look at that comic of yours a bit later, C-Chan. So far, I believe ANTA is just very spoken (and rude) version of 'anata' (you). Langley-Sohryu-san used that very often in NGE series, most memorable being 'anta baka?!'. ^^

For now, this other comic...

Translation beta:

Middle row, right panel:

Generic Mac (?): "Sis... what the... just what?" [This line is pretty much just "Sister, what... what?" (the tone is strictly EXPLAIN ME NOW); suit yourself some witty English version :D]
OS9: "I got this from Tiger-chan." / "Tiger-chan let me have this." / "Tiger-chan gave this to me."

Middle row, left panel:

SFX(upper): (I'd like to translate this is as DASH! even though I'm not sure if it's exactly the storming away sound in Japanese)
SFX(lower): (Bang, door opening violently and hitting against the wall)

Bottom row, rightmost panel:

Generic Mac (?): "Puma!" (she prolongates the word, but I don't know how to do that in English; 'Puuumaaa'?)
Generic Mac again: "Memory..."

SFX (right below Generic Mac's arm): (bang, again door opening violently)
SFX: ('biku' is the 'sound effect' for surprise; maybe this could be "Yikes!!" or something like that)

Bottom row, middle panel:

Generic Mac (?): "Gimme... memory! Hand it over!"

Bottom row, leftmost panel:

Generic Mac (?): "Do it now!" / "Hurry up!"

HAHAHAHA! Those Mac-tan comics are awesome! I hope more of those get translated! :D

And I saw the updated Mac-tan roster in the Wikipedia article, but I don't think that OS 8-tan is a one-shot character anymore now that I've thought of a rendition for her too.

Thank you Pitkin.  ^__^
I know she says "ME-MO-RII", but figured "Memory" is too complex a word to say when you're growling like that.  ^v^
Hence the use of "RAM" instead.  ^.^

I know what you mean, Aurora, so next time Alfamille shows up you ask him.  Eventually I'll make Wiki icons for your Macs as well, so if there is an issue I can simply compromise on both OS8 designs as well.

If it's simple enough, I'd love to make the translation of that Mac comic into a separate project.  ^__^

I'm assuming this one's the cover:

Tried my hand on a crude translation before, but naturally a quick verification wouldn't hurt.  ^.^

Top left-hand corner: ANIME ba ket-tei (~"Decisive Anime", "Educational Anime"?)
Lower right: Masshi Manga (~"Kid's manga"?)
Lower left: Uso desu (~"Just kiddin'") ^___^'

I'll see what I can do, but I'm a bit booked with preparations for Youmacon... -__-

Still, I did manage to quickly "collage" the following Wiki icons:

...So I might be able to squeeze in a mini OS8 and eliminate the "one-shot" reference (which is bound to attract a purist or two.... ^^;).

Should still have the hat, but with a slightly older look.

C-Chan added the following  1 minute after last message :

BTW, know you're bucked completely, but if you do manage the time to upload these to Wiki, please add them as "Public Domain" since I did not draw any of them.  Probably best to reserve "GNU" for Wiki avis drawn from scratch.  ^__^

I just wanted to clear that I like Aurora's rendition of OS8. But what I'm aware of is that I dont wanna have issues on those futaba traditionalist...

I mean I'm sure some of them won't even believe there is an OS8-tan, but of course I gave a link where to find that original OS8-tan. Now if I quickly replace it with Aurora's version, those people will bring up comments like "this isn't included in the original version!...or this isn't included in the old  mac storage warehouse!".

It's a fact that some of those purist and traditionalist doesn't recognize the international artist around the web who only wish to fill a girl mascot in each OS and give life to it...:(

When I return from Youmacon and other matters of business, I'll speak with Pitkin about starting an official translation project for the Mac comic.  Exposure to that comic will surely boost people's opinion about the Mac-tans.  (not saying that everyone's a pervert, but,.. you know... hehe... -v-')

Well again, when i return, my hope is to create a Wiki avi for OS8 that merges the two designs.  Since Aurora already based her design loosely on the baby OS8 one (which is cute, but not particularly my thing.... -v-'), merging the two won't be as hard as [say] creating the hybrid Leopard-chan.  ^^

Essentially Aurora's older girl look, combined with the Rastafarian-style apple hat... ^v^'

HEY! There's one guy at Wakachan who's name is "Ren-do" I believe. He posted 3 Mac 4komas. Is he or she one of you guys?

Maybe that person saw the OS9's description on the List of OS-tans page in Wikipedia. Because I kinda gave a link to where the Mac 4koma to be seen

Also that convinced myself to upload the 4koma on which you and Pitkin translated. I wish the administrator of otakubell will approve it.

MAC matsuri mata fuhatsu

Anyway, this is the last bit of work I can invest in the Mac Manga until about a week later.

Page 1 is not only full of kana/kanji, but the artist's handwriting seems less than average.  ^^;
Before we can even begin to translate, we have to know what's being WRITTEN first.

I tried my best annotating the text, but without proper recognition of complicated kanji and with this dismal handwriting, I could only go so far.  My Xubuntu machine has some really good Japanese language apps that were of big help (especially KanjiPad), but again would've definitely helped if the writing were legible.  ^^;

Huh, you didn't know that?
Eons ago, I was inches away from uploading my first Amiga pic (without registering), but thanks to I-forget-which-pic, I saw first hand how easily their "Toshiakis" slaughtered pics that weren't to their liking.  So that (and a few other incidents since then) is what turned me off from their board completely, but as I clarified before on Topicless, feel free to put stuff their if you want to.

I don't care if they make fun of my translation, since I know it's bad.  But promise me you'll kick their butts if they start making fun of how I drew in the words....  `v'

If not for the super-ultra-kawaii DR-DOS AVI that Kildall-san would approve and I will worship you for, I could almost swear all this flying around makes you look like James Bond....  Or Di Caprio in that aviator movie... thingie.... Ã,¬ï¼¿Ã,¬

But yeah, I guess I accidentally got involved in this thread quite a bit.  Translating manga is good practice for Japanese learning -- I've see the kanji for "watashi"ãâ,¬â,¬Ã¯Â¼Ë†Ã§Â§ÂÃ¯Â¼â€°
and "nan" (何) so often now that they're becoming second-hand.  -v-'

Should look familiar if you've been at Waka or Niijura lately....  -v-

Not that I can verify if this is an honest-to-goodness translation, but that's what Pitkin-san and Codi-san are here for.  ^__^

'Maji ka?' can be translated as something like, 'for real?', or 'I don't believe it (in the sense of 'I can't believe this happens to me!'), if I'm not mistaken. 'Eto' is just 'uhh...', 'err...', 'umm...' or such. If the male character's often interrupted when working/drawing, maybe he's showing some frustration like 'why do they bother me all the time...', but I don't know if I can come up with anything awesome for that purpose. ^^;

Could it be that the little girl's (girl? Boy? I can't tell) name is 'Mami'? That way it'd translate quite well into, 'Mami also wants to model!' or 'Mami wants to be a model too!' (Or literally, 'Mami wants to try doing modeling too!', if I've understood the verb correctly.)

Indeed a few bumps, but I guess it wasn't too shabby for a beginner.
My confidence level is building now....  ^__^

I'll do the editing tonight then.  Given my time constraints, unless the manga panel is particularly small, I'll probably break it up like that: one day to translate, the next to write it all in.  -v-

Quote'Maji ka?' can be translated as something like, 'for real?', or 'I don't believe it (in the sense of 'I can't believe this happens to me!'), if I'm not mistaken. 'Eto' is just 'uhh...', 'err...', 'umm...' or such. If the male character's often interrupted when working/drawing, maybe he's showing some frustration like 'why do they bother me all the time...', but I don't know if I can come up with anything awesome for that purpose. ^^;

I'm thinking "You've gotta be kiddin' me...", which given the situation would actually second as a pun.  ^^'

"Aw sh*t" would be shorter, but methinks Toshiaki is only a pervert, not a foul-mouthed.  ^__^

QuoteCould it be that the little girl's (girl? Boy? I can't tell) name is 'Mami'? That way it'd translate quite well into, 'Mami also wants to model!' or 'Mami wants to be a model too!' (Or literally, 'Mami wants to try doing modeling too!', if I've understood the verb correctly.)

I was confused myself since I read somewhere that she was OS8 Tempo-tan.  Likely that it is a girl; otherwise, Sonata-san's reaction to the undressing part might not have been as extreme.  ^^;

I originally thought she was slurring "Nani o" or something, but if her name is "Mami" then it begs to wonder who she's supposed to be.  Some random character or an actual Mac component?  '__'

Hmmm,.... -__-

*ponders*

*stares at Aurora and Alfamille*

QuoteAgain, if I continue from my version of the earlier lines, this one would be just the 'Pweeze, pweeze?', maybe with some 'I wannas' thrown in too.

At this point I want to make it known that I'm not sure if my translation is any more accurate than C-Chan's original. Just my hunch at use... ^^;

Well no, I think I would lean more towards yours, just cause I wasn't 100% sure this was a question.  (I didn't see any "-ka" anywhere).  ^__^

QuoteNothing to add. This was difficult for me to phrase, and the thought seems to be there. ^^

Okey-doke.  ^__^
I'll see about ironing out his sentence structure, since it feels a little strange.  Maybe some more informality, since he is just an average perverted joe.  ^^

QuotePerfect. Toriaezu can also be translated as, 'for now', but C-Chan's translation is better.

*squeals*  Thank you!  ^__^

I'll change that to "First off" during the edits.  Again, the whole informality thing.

I believe dubbers frequently replace "Haaaaai!" with "Riiiiight!" since it's the only thing that would sound halfway decent in English ("Yeeeeeees" doesn't carry the same melodic inflection and "Aaaaaai" sounds too Irish... ^v^;).
Not sure if this is a well-loved practice, but at this point there's little else we can do.  ^^;

QuotePerfect.

*squeals again*  Thank you again!  ^v^
Sonata-san strikes me as the classy-type -- in any case, the only real way to translate all her embellishments (desu wa) is to just add some embellishments of my own (spot of...)

QuotePerfect.

Well okay, this one's overdone.  -v-'

Anyone who's watched Azumanga could've gotten that.  ^^;

QuoteYes, perfect. Misunderstanding desu yo. ^o^

Yep, but definitely figured misunderstanding wasn't informal enough.  ^__^
Also considered "This isn't what you think".

I'll see what comes out of the Cutting Room Floor...  -v-

QuoteVery nice.  I would've written, 'Explanations are futile!!!', but I love the way you put it. ^^

I might just go with yours, since it's shorter ("useless excuses" is something of a tongue twister) and it seconds as a reference to "Resistance is futile!" -- just the right thing to say before you beat the crap out of someone.  ^____^;

Both sound awkward, though,... but then she is the classy-type, so you have to kinda keep things complicated.  If this were Mac OS[X]-tan on the other hand, you can count on some liberal amounts of obscenities.  ^v^;

Quote'Can't believe it...' could be another alternative for the 'Well really...', but no real complaints. ^^

C-Chan's translation was splendid, good work! ^o^

Unfortunately in that panel I'm limited in space, but I'll see what I can do.  -v-

Anyway, thank you Pitkin for helping me out.  ^___^

I'm guessing its using some cultural references, hence the reason why something things don't sound familiar at all ("Toco?", "Tamaran?").

Won't try a guessed translation, but the gist of it all seems like this:

Sonata is complimenting the creepy see-through guy for his wonderful pose work.

See-Through Guy is saying something about trying out a new technique.

Sonata is wondering what this new technique is.

See-Through Guy is saying how much it's on his mind.

See-Through Guy has a bout of passion, where he professes his love for this very pleasant thing.  ("Tamaran" is a doushinji, but it could also be half-a-million other things)

Sonata is apparently awed by the enthusiasm.
(Or wondering what the heck she's covered in.)  -v-;

First off, thanks a lot on those translators for their efforts translating the Mac manga...

I believe "Mami" is a japanese name of a girl. Although the wierd thing is, if she is not a Mac-tan.....how come she does have an apple logo on her shirt? And what's up with those chains around her neck...

Like you, this is very confusing to me. But what if maybe Tempo-chan decided herself to be called "Mami" since some girls at a very young age like to be called in on other names (which is also normal to a child's innocence). The character only showed once in the manga. I'm still not very sure, but still there is 80% chance that she is Tempo-tan.

I think i brought this up once before.. what the possiblity of you being able to reverse translate something.. aka put it in japanese?

Well translating from English to Japanese is quite possible.

But for ME to translate from English to Japanese,... well, that's a different story.  ^^'
Depends on how accurate you want it.  ^__^;

See, I'm still a novice -- I may have agreed to translate these pages, but I'm only doing it for the practice.  Can't read them standalone yet without using several tools (e.g., Jquicktrans, IME pad) and a good dictionary at hand.  Plus for the most part, whenever the transliteration of the words isn't particularly clear, I sort of use my imagination to make up what they're probably saying.  ^^'

In the reverse case, the words must be exact, meaning I have to get the grammar right or it might as well be gibberish.  I should one day be at this level, but at the moment I think Bestiland, Google or JIM Breen's would do a better job than I.  ^^'

Then again, don't forget that for many decades, most Anime producers were never particularly concerned over the proper usage of English -- so it's only fair that we should get away with a little butchery ourselves.  ^____^;

I'll give the translation a shot tonight, although right off hand the "Mukashi Mukashi" can be roughly transliterated to "Once Upon a Time....".  So clearly it's trying to sound like the opening of a fairy tale.  ^___^

"We" stopped making translations cause you wanted OVAs, remember?  `v'

For me it also boiled down to poor demand -- my Japanese skills are still too poor, and my drawing inspiration too high, to slug my way through these translations without at least some encouragement.  I'll probably get back to them again one day once I've learned the language a little better.  -v-

I say that we try to find some people who speak Japanese before we proceed farther...

Quote"We" stopped making translations cause you wanted OVAs, remember? `v'

That was shortly before my workload went from "Work Defcon 5" to "Work Defcon 1". Just to add, I think that OVA's didn't go down so good, so let's get everyone reorganized and work on their ideas for a while.

Just to recap:

Defcon 5 = British Prep School
Defcon 4 = German Magnet High School
Defcon 3 = Ultra-Elite Japanese High School
Defcon 2 = Trying to get into Tokyo University*
Defcon 1 = A Japanese-German Ultra-Elite Magnet/Prep School for students applying to Tokyo University*

* Just an example of the sort of workload I was under. Now I can lay back, relax to Defcon 4, and study for my SAT's.
