Title: Artist Requests!
Post by: CaptBrenden on August 02, 2006, 04:25:27 AM
I just thought of a thread we needed.... The Artist Request Thread!!  You want to see something inpreticular, here is the place to make it known!  It may happen, it may not.  For artists like me, its free insperation when I cant think of anything to draw, for fans that cant draw its their chance to see their favorite tans the way they want to see them!  However, that being said... a seperate thread like this will be placed in the Hentai section for those types of requests.

Good idea, even for the... *cough cough* Hentai *cough* *hack* section..... Ã,¬__Ã,¬

I humble request a BeOS-tan (or at least some ideas for one) as I'm drawing a blank with her.  -__-'

I would like to see a Commodore-64-tan.

Coming right up!  ^v^
No seriously, she'll be in my 3rd pic.   ^.^

Took me a while to come up with a preconcept, but eventually settled on one.  Having a little more trouble coming up with the details for Commodore PET, but at least I know for sure she'll be carrying around the group mascot (one which will hopefully be familiar to some people who used it in elementary school Comp class).

C64-tan, btw, is technically Amiga-tan's stepsister.
Despite the marketing schemes, AmigaOS was not created by Commodore, but was simply a licensed version of TripOS with a few modifications of their own.  ^__^

Commodore-tan is a must-have! *makes wave*

My very favourite platform ever, and I'll be carrying out a bloody vengeance should she not become the cutest and best OS-tan in every aspect possible to measure her. *nods seriously*

Nah, forget about the vengeance; I'm just looking forward to seeing her. ^o^

I guess she'll be cute (it's mandatory for all OS-tans), but I'm really aiming more for "cool" with her.

She's one of the few vintage -tans to keep up with the times (still plenty of C64 games being programmed today), so she's evolved into something of a Gamer.

BeOS-tan... she has inline-skaters since she is a speed junkie, wears a small yellow cap, slightly tilted to the left side, either wears headphones or carries a violin-case ("multimedia OS"), is clad in blue  and/or silver (BeBox colors) and is contantly doing 2 things at the same time.

Hmm, What about a UNIX-tan (or rather UNIX-sama)? I think she'd either be a female version of Odo or like in the Solitaire-comic about 98-tan leave a trace during movement, only that every instance is its own version of Unix, She herself should have something of a witch, not ugly, but old, magical and powerful. I am just spreading ideas in the hope someone will like them or at least they will stir up a discussion.

I just realized that I've never seen a UNIX-tan! I believe that C-Chan was planning one, a while back...

Fufufu... Like a hyperactive version of Knoppix-tan.  -v-

QuoteAcorn Archimedes-tan

That'd be another hardware-tan, though.  ^__^'
Which reminds me, is an ArthurOS worth it or can it just be lumped together with RISC-tan to save time?  -v-

QuoteHmm, What about a UNIX-tan (or rather UNIX-sama)? GAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  UNIX-SAMA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  ;^0^;

*hugs Unix-sama protectively*

MINE!!! ALL MINE!!!! NO TOUCHY!!!!!!!!  ;^0^;

Hehe, just kidding.  ^___^

Truth be told, I meant for Unix-sama to be my first OS-tan ever, but as you can imagine things don't always work out the way you want it to.  ^___^
For one thing, I hadn't drawn in over two years, had little-to-no experience in vector graphics, and wasn't really sure if I was up to such an ambitious task (the pilot pic called for her + Solaris-tan + Linux-tan + RedHat-tan + Fedora-tan + a whole slew of Linux distros and Unix descendants in the background).  That's why I drew Amiga-tan to start off with, and scheduled Unix-sama for my fifth pic.  By then, hopefully I'll know enough to try my hand at special lighting effects, and draw her with the proper level of grace and awe that she deserves. -v-

Fortunately, I see creative minds think alike.  ^.^
Wai!!  ^v^

As far as her existing preconcept goes, though she'll look like a child/preadolescent, she will (as you say) be in fact very old, very powerful, very wise, utilitarian to a fault, very invigorating to talk with when she's in a good mood, and dreadfully frightening when she's not.  She is in fact a sorceress, and also quite prolific too considering how many daughters, grandaughters, clones, etc she's released into this world.  While she used to be a former draconian leader and staunch capitalist in her youth, age and the devastating Unix Wars of the early 90's have amounted to a drastic change of heart; leading to her efforts at reconciling the Unix and Linux types.  (Even though it's obvious there's a LONG way to go -- too many conflicting agendas, too much infighting, too many cultural differences, etc -- not to mention that her own temper doesn't help at times.)

Relative to other existing character types, you could say that the result I'm aiming for is for an inspirational lump sum of the following characters:

- Lady Eboshi (Mononoke Hime)
- Madame Suliman (Howl's Moving Castle)
- Dr. Hannibal Lecter (Thomas Harris novels/movies)
- Fleda Claes Johansson (Gunslinger Girl)

The issue of  a successor should get brought up a lot, as she constantly obsesses about her own obsolesence but yet trusts very few of her own progeny and is apprehensive about nominating someone outside of the bloodline (like Linux-tan).  Her greatest hope lies in the hybrid systems (e.g., z/OS, Nexenta, AIX), but naturally she keeps other options on the table.

Ohh...there she is. As for new Operating System Girls, I'd suggest a Microsoft BASIC-tan. The first OS from Big Bro. Written for *gasp* the Apple ][!

Apple ][, eh....?  Ã,¬vÃ,¬

*sly look*

Hmmm.....

*grabs vector pen tool*

*plots circle*

*bends node #1 down to create red apple shape*

*plots closed two-node line on top*

*shifts paths outward on either end to form green leaf shape*

*duplicates red apple shape*

*converts it to black, transparency 15%*

*shift nodes #1 & 4 to the right, to complete proper shading effect*

*activates Text tool*

*types in "BASIC" in Arial Black font*

*morphs text to form right size and shape over the red apple*

*groups all 4 components*

*sticks completed "BASIC apple" into Lisa-tan's basket*

WOOHOO!! DONE!!!!  MAJOR COP OUT COMPLETE!!!!!
Problem-solved!!  ^V^

BASIC does seem more of a programming language, though (RISC-tan was presumably first written almost entirely in BBC-Basic).  But it does beg the question where do programming languages fit into the OS-tanverse.

Hmm........ -___-

*ponders*

C-Chan added the following  1 hour 50 minutes after last message :

I came up with an OS-tan "roadmap" for -tans I'd like to draw, seen drawn or at least mentioned.  All of them grouped based on the factions I have currently set up.

Would you like to see the list?  'v'

It's a pretty-darn big list, btw, and hardly complete since there's just TOO MANY DARN OS-tans out there!  >_<
(now I see why the original creators just stuck with Windows and Mac-tans.... Ã,¬__Ã,¬')
But I do hope to add more as I continue my research, and I could certainly use your help.  ^__^
(To add more -tans,  to add more factions, to make sure they're in the right faction, to come up with story ideas, etc.)

I kew there was life outside of Macs and Windows, but seriously,... this puts a new spin on "brave new world".  @__@;

I kinda recognize the effort of you making each OSes each own -tan, however it would really help if we kinda hire more artist to help that goal you've been achieving (but im not telling you to give up if there's no one around :P )

Yes and I agree with you, there are some OS-tans or kuns or other OSes that haven't got any tans or kuns to bring life and give a good character.

The wishes of Alfamille and Kami-Tux are my command!  ^v^
(well,... er,... okay, just my motivation....  -v-)

Anyway, here's the first build....
Faction names are in bold.   OS-tans that I've finished or have ideas for, have a star next to them.  Keep in mind a few thing:

1) Still open to new factions, but this by no way is meant to be permanent.  The "political" world of the OS-tans changes frequently, so there where very different factions in the past and will likely be many different ones in the future.

2) Not all OS-tans shown (or added) need to be necessarily drawn.  For example, with the exception of any intervention by Plan 9 (who, aside from being an eccentric mastermind, is also a bit of a necromancer/zombie freak -- a reference to the original movie), the deceased -tans need only be mentioned.

3) There's also tremendous overlap and interdealings between the factions, so the fact that I broke them up in no way means that they're necessarily trying to exclude eachother.  Binteji Renmei -tans constantly help out other -tans and Linux/Unix consortium members contribute tremendously to "The Guild" (Mainframes).

4) I know I got lazy with some of the existing characters, but for convenience sake I'll probably spell them all out next time I get the chance (even if I have to type in each and every Linux distros known to man.... X__x)

5) And again, if you see someone not on the list, I likely haven't added her yet.  Still researching.....  xvx'

Cool, you remember poor CAOS-tan.  I told you once that Commodore 64-tan didn't initally like Amiga-tan for many years, but never explained why.  CAOS is a big clue to that animosity, which thankfully time has healed.

There are still many more OS-tans to go, but they're just being listed here for now.  ^__^

QuoteThe next step is to design those new tans...

*cough cough*  Hehehe..... Well, the next step is to finish all the 3rd pic-critical chibis, and then work on the 3rd pic itself (which will be done in a manga-like panel style.  Then the 4th pic, which will be another rapid-deployment picture and my first test of honoring Juzo-kun's designs (featuring Fedora, Red Hat, Win 95 and Win 95 OSR 2.5).
Then the 5th pic, where I'll finally be able to introduce Unix-sama, as well as cameo Plan 9-tan and Inferno-tan.

Once all 5 pilot pics are done, the rest is a free-for-all!!  ^V^
Chibis, portraits, pictures, panel comics,...

The emphasis, first and foremost before the artwork, is to set up character personalities and backstories to go with them.  Without tying any new OS-tan with something cohesive in this "brave new world" we're creating, all the new -tans will be no different than cigarette-tans, mecha-musume or other one-shots.  '__'

Quotewhooaaa, duuuuude~~

I'm not THAT much of a OS-history buff... I still applaud you.

hm.... due to my lack of knowledge, if you ever want me to draw something, it would be better for you to throw me some info and ideas first. ^^

Hehehe....  Actually, not very good with computers or history either.  Probably good time to note that NONE of the systems I've drawn so far have ever been used by me in any way-shape-or form.  (ATari 8-bit is the only exception, but I haven't even gotten to her yet, and even then I can't remember her much.)

First trip, of course, is Wiki to get a basic idea of the target OS-tan.  Since Wiki can only go so far, I usually visit the source links to view additional details, plus opinions from actual users, and samples of logos, desktop graphics and the like that I could use for my rendition.  It was in fact a very dedicated fansite that provided me with more valuable information for RISC-tan than Wiki.  ^___^

I'm not sure if I would ever force someone to draw anything for me, but certainly if you would like to volunteer to create a rendition, yeah I'd be more than happy to brainstorm some ideas regarding the -tans design and backstory (using the above method to make sure I know what I'm talking about...  ^__^).

QuoteI cannot wait for the next two OS-tans, C-Chan! Can you give us some idea?

No change yet.  Still PC-DOS-tan and PTS-DOS-tan!  ^__^

PC-DOS-tan is MS-DOS-tan's twin sister.  They were very close in their youth and perfectly-identical in style and manner despite the different tasks they were initially designated to.  But they were cruelly separated when their respective parent companies parted ways.  For many years, they were rarely allowed to see each other unless it was as rivals; restrictions have eased in recent years, but now, by pure force-of-habit, they rarely see each other voluntarily.  Only the occasional DOSSE gathering allows them the chance to relive old times.

PC-DOS-tan's personality used to be identical to that of MS-DOS-tan, but a harder life has sharpened her wits (as well as her tongue), making her appear more outgoing and street-smart even though she still remains largely antisocial.  She has a part-time job working at the company of her old associate, OS/2-tan, and hates every bit of it.  Still, it keeps her occupied, distracts her from the vague feeling that something's "missing" in her life, and allows her to support herself.

Still need to flesh out details on PTS-DOS-tan's story, but for now she speaks entirely in Russian, meaning MSX-DOS-tan, BASH-tan or Firefox-tan have to be around to translate.  ^__^'
She's a master of reverse engineering, and can work wonders with technology that seems impossible to decipher and software that seem impossible to duplicate.
If you can understand her, she'll strike you as sharp and witty, with an excellent sense of purpose and fluent knowledge in history, philosophy and the arts.  Otherwise, she seems offish and apathetic.

*phaser shot blasts some bricks besides ME-C-chan's head*

*gulp*  'KAY, that's my que to get the hell outta here!!!  ^v^;
Hope to talk more tomorrow!!!

It's a weird love hate-relationship... They either really really hate me, are mildly fond of me or are generally indifferent towards me, but so few ever really LOVE me.  If the Windows Family ever collapsed, there'd be so many people who'd either rejoice or not give a crap.

QuoteThink of all the different Dstro-tans, and the Tux. Now there are also many MacOSes and a number of asorted other OSes (like my floppyriding "Who needs 64MB harddisks anyway" lil friend Minix-tan)

Listing all the Linux Distros is gonna take a long time, but I guess we can start by adding the ones from the "Linux Distros" thread.  I'll add more in time as I continue to add other -tans to the list.  ^__^

I'm excluding -kuns for now since I probably won't be drawing them voluntarily (Homeo maybe, but probably only for PalmOS/Amiga-tan comic relief).

Windows and MacOS lists have been expanded also, to get a better idea of their size relative to the other factions.  The Linux/Unix Consortium will remain the largest and most powerful of them all, but also the least poltiically stable (so members come and go all the time).

Minix was on the original list and even had a question mark  since I wanted to make sure you were okay with her faction placement.  Don't worry if you feel she's too independent to be part of a group -- in fact, the larger factions really are just "associations" and the members needn't live together the way the Windows or Binteji Renmei -tans do. For example.  CIOST members live scattered and hermit-like for the most part, banding together only when honoring their mutual defense pact.

BTW, I added an Amoeba-tan in there too.  ^__^
Hopefully you can come up with something about her, since research material seems a bit sketchy on the matter.  ^^'

QuoteThe User Space Gang needs Dragonfly BSD-tan as well...

Thanks!  Added!  ^__^
Also took the opportunity to add a few more OS-tans here and there.  I'm still having trouble pronouncing "Uuu"-tan's full name.  ^^'

QuoteCan't wait for the new DOS-tans!

Fufufu,... almost time,... almost time, my good friend NewYinzer....  ^__^
I'll probably end up adding more DOSSE members too in time, since I did catch a glimpose of a couple potential new recruits.
First I'll have to filter through them, sincce "DOS" really is a very common in most names.  -v-'

Oh, and did in fact decide to keep ArthurOS as a separae OS-tan after all, and as a Binteji Renmei member no less!  ^__^
She and AcornMOS will probably correspond to their sister RISC OS-tan regularly (as well as send her food/provisions whenever the A$ Coalition suffers the usual financial hardships).  -v-;

Anyway, here's the updated list:

From what I read about Amoeba, she should fit in the COIST more than in the Linux/Unix Consortium. Minix-tan however is a full Unix.

She wouldn't be the first Unix-like system on the roster either (VxWorks, for one), but generally speaking full-fledged Windows/Apple/Linux/Unix types are somewhat... "shunned" by the CIOST -tans.  -v-

Probably, but thats a simply -tan as its only nVidia and ATI, same with the path of Intel and AMD.

Hehehe....  Well I guess it can pass for art.  ^^'

But even though I've done so before on many occasions, I should probably disclose again that I'm not technically "an artist".

And I don't mean that out of modesty, but just as an honest assessment of the facts.  -v-

I'm a pig with too little time and too little talent, but with too many ideas and too much drive to let them whither away in my brain.  So I invent ways to produce these drawings in any way I can, even if it means to cheat.  As long as I can get the end product where I want it to be, ta hell with how I actually got to that point!  ^v^

On the bright side, since I do use Inkscape a lot , I can at the very least claim to be sort-of a "sculptor".  Ã,¬__Ã,¬'

But anway, nuff about me.  ^v^
I do have a purpose for showing off.... -v-

If you don't mind waiting until my 3rd pic is done and then don't mind me borrowing her for a while when the time comes, I may be able to whip up something nice.  ^.^

I'll even throw in Linux-tan and Ubuntu-tan in the background, just to sweeten the deal!  ^v^

Hehe... well, it's gonna be a while,... ^^'
Four more chibi rendtions (=4 weeks), plus the time it takes to complete my 3rd pic (possibly another 4).

So no, she can stay on your sig for a while....
*suspicous glare* Fufuf,... it ain't like you're gonna cheat on her (=draw another -tan) while she's away, right...?  `v'

C-Chan added the following  1 hour 42 minutes after last message :

Okay, just finished updating the roadmap a little.
Added Aurora's new -tans, plus a Wanderer and two new Binteji Renmei members (GEM and CTOS).

Also started a new marking scheme:  "> " indicates the OS-tan has been drawn (by one or multiple artists) and "* " indicates that ideas are on the table for that particular OS-tan.

Anyway, let's begin.... ^__^

Hmmm,....

That way I could just update a single list on the first page and no one has to search around for the updated list in later pages (in this one there's only 3 at this moment, but the OS/2 one, for example, already has 6....  ^^; )

Plus I could probably collect all my bios there too, and not make it so much of a pain in the rear to find them....  ^__^

Okay, you sold me.  ^___^
But:

(1)  Are you sure you don't mind if I leave?  After all, limited as it might have been, I did get Requests.  ^___^

(2)  Would you mind giving my list an extention on its rent for perhaps another week or so?  Until I can set up a place for it?  (and more bios... ^^; )

Okay, no prob, no prob....  ^.^

But yes, the sooner I can get the single thread set up, I think it'll be better for everyone.  ^__^

.

a) It'll prevent me from flooding the board with threads as time goes on.

b) It'll provide a single user-friendly spot for people to visit the chibis, read the bios, view the roadmap, praise other people's contributions (e.g., SleepyD and Darknight's OS/2 renditions), and access any other goodies I can sneak in.  And all without having them bounce around from thread-to-thread and wade through the LOOOOOONG tangents.  *stares in general direction of PalmOS thread*  T__T'

c) Easier for me to update.  ^__^

d) Provides an opportunity for me to add a little eye-candy and make it actually interesting to read.  ^.^

You got it!

I'll queue it up after my 3rd pic and Kami-Tux's Minix-tan rendition.  In other words, by sometime in November it'll be ready.  ^.^

But coincidentally, I did have a 3.1-tan w/DOSkitty skipping-a-long-a-road-style pic idea in mind.  It's just that it's supposed to be an old looking picture (beige-and-white, and slightly torn, circa 1990) and she's alongside 2.0-tan.

Since those were simpler days then, both 2.0-tan and 3.1-tan are smiling and laughing, free of any worries.  ^__^

Wow, I thought i was the only one who thought that.  ^__^
But then it is true that the original artists often used existing Anime characters as templates.   (e.g., ME-tan with Canal Vorfeed from 'Lost Universe')

Heck, even I'm guilty of that at times.  2.0-sama, for example, should bear a slight resemblance to Angelica from 'Gunslinger Girls'.... -v-

But anyway, there's one way to fix this presumed heresy.... -v-

Fill in the blanks:

keep her as she is, for the time period that dress is from, it fits equaly for young girls and older ones.  its like a doll dress or something.  It will be interesting to see how it turns out.   and as a note.. more pictures with your tans WITH the new tans would be good for promotion, as people look for the new tans.  But maybe your afraid that they will pale next to their younger more vibrant sisters...and rivals... heh heh heh

Title: Artist Requests!
Post by: C-Chan on September 15, 2006, 02:41:49 PM
That's why they're "preconcept" chibis.  ^__^
I do them every time I want to whip out a new character in less than a few hours (since I don't have to worry about proportions, fingers, toes and fine details.

Didn't really mean to do them originally (should've been done with my 3rd pic by now if I'd have followed my original s'hedule), but they were requested by popular demand.  ^^;

*points finger accusingly at Pitkin, Darknight, Alfamille, etc*

THEY DID IT!!!  THEY MADE ME DO THEM!!!! THEY POINTED GUNS AT MY HEAD AND SAID 'IF YOU DON'T DO THEM FREAKIN CHIBIS, WE'LL BLOW YOUR BRAINS OFF'!  UWAAAAAAAA!!!!  ;^0^;

Kidding, of course.  Fufufu.... ^.^

No, but they've been fun, and should help with my 3rd pic since I'll have an idea of what the new characters look like.  -v-

-_- artwork should never be rushed, especialy for drawings your using to try to establish these characters.  if anything could have been cut from the process it would have been the color.  preconcept pics should be no more then sketches and only the most minor of color, just to remind you what you intended.   you spent to much effort on those to lable them preconcept or rushed.  shame on you. now go draw proper porportions!

Gist of it, though, is that I did set "speed-drawing" as my goal, since I really can't afford to spend too taking my time.  Last time I did that resulted in many problems and inevitably a 2yr artist's block.

Can't afford to repeat that again.  If it looks fine for the amount of time investment put in, I'll consider it a victory.  ^__^

C-Chan added the following  8 minutes after last message :

Case in point, the rendition of 3.1-sama took an hour and change to sculpt in Inkscape (not including the resizing and stuff on Photoshop to conform it to the Wiki avi format).

Perhaps the closeup offers a better view of all the cheats and shortcuts used to get the final product produced very quickly (biggest one is that I didn't even bother with a lower body, and had her right arm cover up most of her chest/left arm detail).  Still, if it looks fine as it is, then it's a success in my book.  ^.^

expetional, I must say, very good job. Love how Doskitty looks too.  I get that artists block sometimes and it really sucks.  -_- seems im only interested in doing art when i have no time to do it.. when i have exess timeits hard for me to sit and draw.  odd to say the least.

Anyhow.. i need to figure out what the hardware conflict with photoshop is right now, cus i cant use it -_-  something from when I installed it 2 weeks ago, to now has conflicted and I cant open it.  fuckberries.

Well,... there's always Inkscape to help you, Captain.  ^__^

Vector graphics are non-artist's dream, so perhaps it's why I've jived well with it, despite it's occasional crashes.  -v-

I'll be heading out now.  ;-v-;
To moved to think of any parting words, so I'll let OSR2.5-sama speak for me (see left panel):
