Title: Favorite TV Shows
Post by: Nichi on May 29, 2011, 08:46:21 PM
Because I'm surprised there isn't already a topic on this subject*, I decided to make a topic for us to talk about the TV shows we like; both past and present, live action or animated
*I have a feeling there is probably a topic just like this one buried somewhere on here, but I don't feel like digging around to find it and then preform topic necromancy, so...

Of current TV shows, one of the ones I regularly follow is Warehouse 13; which I've watched since it premiered back in summer '09. For those who may not know about it, I'll gladly explain: the show is about a group of people who work at a warehouse in the middle of nowhere, who are given the task of locating and retrieving dangerous artifacts to be stored away. The show as a whole is pretty good; with a sense of adventure and humor that sadly seems absent from most other Syfy Original Series I've tried to watch over the past few years (Most of their original series try to be dark and gritty like the '04 reboot of Battlestar Galactica, which I don't care much for to be honest).

As for a classic TV series I like, I just have 4 words for you: Monty Python's Flying Circus. This show shouldn't need an introduction, so I'll cut to the chase and say that this show is timeless; what's not to love?

Flying circus, well, cheers to that.

And series...what, you mean aside from Doctor Who?

Nothing atm, actually...might start up Fringe again sometime, tho.

I've heard my sister's father-in-law make a bid deal about Fringe. Is it any good?

Also, I would have brought up Doctor Who, but seeing as everybody here already knows of it, I didn't see a need...unless I just felt like talking about my experience when I first watched it.

the only current tv shows i have labeled as 'favourite' are Law and Order: Special Victims Unit and Dr. Who. I also watch alot of Family Guy, King of the Hill, and Who's Line is it Anyway? ^^

out of past shows, there's The Powerpuff Girls, Sailor Moon, Code LYOKO, Invader Zim, and a few others.

already mentioned my great disappointment with "My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding". :\

@Choco: You liked Code Lyoko too? I loved that show; it pissed me off when Cartoon Network dropped it with only 7 episodes left before it was finished.

One show that I did like way back in '02 was The Screen Savers. It was a show on the now sadly-defunct TechTV, which featured tech tips, tricks, and news, with hosts who you could tell had fun doing the show. I was hooked on this show; although they occasionally did do a segment or interview that made me go "wut?" (Like when they interviewed J-Lo because she briefly mentioned Google in her newest movie), they still had some pretty cool segments (My favorite always being "The Twisted List"; a weekly top 10 list of the weird but funny things they found online, such as stupid time-waster games). However, I stopped watching in '04; after several of the people I liked from the show left and the show began gravitating away from technology toward being whatever the hell they felt like talking about...and from there, it was renamed Attack of the Show; which is still running to this day.

my friend likes world's dumbest, and i watch it with her on occasion (we do the same with who's line pretty much every day).

i love pawn stars, american pickers, and american restoration, too. :3
Title: Re: Favorite TV Shows

@Bella: I never could get into the '04 Battlestar Galactica; I've preferred the original '78 series
Title: Re: Favorite TV Shows
Post by: Bella on June 04, 2011, 01:56:35 PM
@Pentium: Never seen the original BSG, so I can't comment... I really liked the '04 series though. (Kara Thrace and Gaius Baltar are like two of my favorite characters ever. Especially Baltar.) ^w^

I like Pawn Stars and American Pickers too...

And since cartoons were mentioned, one of my favorite "kids shows" (though I suppose that's dubious) is Adventure Time. It is hypnotically strange. *_____*
Title: Re: Favorite TV Shows
Post by: Nichi on June 04, 2011, 02:40:30 PM
I've tried watching Adventure Time before; after seeing some people on GameFAQs going crazy over it. It's alright, but not really my cup of tea.

Another show I like is Freakazoid. I love how completely off-the-wall that show it; it being one of my favorite shows as a kid for the fact it felt like a spoof of Batman, and I still enjoy it now because I catch some of the jokes that went over my head as a kid (Which is the reason why my mom wouldn't let me watch Animaniacs until I was older...although my dad had no problems with it).
Title: Re: Favorite TV Shows
Post by: Chocofreak13 on June 04, 2011, 04:27:53 PM
ooo, adventure time.  the cartoon that's not really for kids. ^^ that one's good, as is chowder and flapjack (the last two just for the "lolwut?")
Title: Re: Favorite TV Shows
Post by: Nichi on June 04, 2011, 05:47:33 PM
I never watched Flapjack, and couldn't stand Chowder from the previews I saw of it (I was more inclined to watch Xaviar: Renegade Angel; another show that's previews turned me away from trying it)
Title: Re: Favorite TV Shows
Post by: Chocofreak13 on June 04, 2011, 05:59:10 PM
oh god, xaviar? eeww, i stayed away from that one. ><;;

also, chowder is a wee bit dumb, but cute, and a little funny. give it a chance before you kill it with fire. :3

(yeesh, i'm a hypocrite. :\)
Title: Re: Favorite TV Shows
Post by: Nichi on June 04, 2011, 06:08:29 PM
I might give it a chance, although I'm not expecting much; since it just looks like they're trying to bring back the "gross-out humor" fad of the early '90s
Title: Re: Favorite TV Shows
Post by: Chocofreak13 on June 04, 2011, 06:27:56 PM
there wasn't really any gross-out humour. it was more situational humour, relationship humour, reference humour or random humour.
for example, when a criminal is in the kitchen, the police are too scared to apprehend him, so they begin playing "eeany-meany-miney-moe" to choose who will go get the perp. ^^;
Title: Re: Favorite TV Shows
Post by: Nichi on June 04, 2011, 06:44:09 PM
If that's the case, I'll have to give it a shot. The previews I saw before it premiered made it out to be all about gross-out humor, which is what turned me off
Title: Re: Favorite TV Shows
Post by: Chocofreak13 on June 04, 2011, 06:50:49 PM
eh, it might have a little, but i can't imagine it has a super amount. has some (sorry, it's been awhile since i watched it), but that's not what it's all about.
though, if overeating grosses you out, don't watch it. chowder will eat ANYTHING. ^^;
Title: Re: Favorite TV Shows
Post by: Nichi on June 04, 2011, 07:05:02 PM
It's not that I'm grossed out easily (My mom is, though), it's that I never really liked gross-out humor; I fail to see what makes things like people puking funny.

Anyway, anther show I like (Getting into anime now) is .hack//Legend of the Twilight. It served as my introduction to the series, which lead me to finally trying the games after years of curiosity and getting hooked even if I haven't beaten the 4th one yet. Even after watching .hack//Sign a few years later (Which was really good, although not exactly one of my favorites), I still don't see where the hate for LOTT came from; it's honestly not too bad of a series.
Title: Re: Favorite TV Shows
Post by: Chocofreak13 on June 04, 2011, 07:11:18 PM
omg, .hack//legend. *w* i barely saw it when it was on tv, but what i did see i loved. ("Emerald Green" is one of my favourite anime theme songs; i almost performed it for a lipsyncing competition, only non-english songs weren't allowed. ><; ). i have a special box-set dvd i got at my local newbury comics (i feel bad for everyone who's not here, since they don't have one :3) that came with the OST for the series. ^^
if you want any of the songs, let me know; it also came with a special acoustic extended version of "New World", that's actually better than the original version in my opinion. :3

EDIT: also, i imagine that the hate for legend was that it was much more cutesy than the original series, which may have pissed off some people since it went from more of a type "A" anime to a type "B" anime (i believe you posted in the "MELISSA SAYS" thread in the anime section). it was kinda a big transition.
also, the manga has a different plot than the anime for legend, so i recommend seeing both. ^^
Title: Re: Favorite TV Shows
Post by: Nichi on June 04, 2011, 07:17:09 PM
I read the first volume of the manga, and it seemed pretty good; I almost bought the omnibus edition shortly after, but it sold out by the time I had the money for it.

Speaking of, I still need to track down volume 2 of the anime; I bought volume 1 at a local pawn shop a few years ago, while volume 3 was a lucky find when I went with my parents to Big Lots (For the record, that was the only worthwhile thing I've ever found there)
Title: Re: Favorite TV Shows

like how i found discount manga at building 19? (so many volumes! 3 bucks each! *0*)
if all else fails, torrent the missing episodes? :\
Title: Re: Favorite TV Shows
Post by: Nichi on June 04, 2011, 09:14:51 PM
I know I can get it on Amazon for mere pennies, but it's a matter of getting off my lazy butt and ordering it.

Anyway, another show I like that doesn't need any introduction to anyone here, but I feel like talking about my first experience watching it, is Doctor Who.

The very first time I tried to watch it was during the season 1 episode, Dalek; I came in half-way through the episode, and because I didn't know anything about the series prior to some crappy promos on BBC America (Which literally amounted to "Doctor Who: coming soon..." while showing little to no clips from the show), I was left wondering "What the hell is going on?". However, I gave the series a 2nd chance in late summer '08; after reading up on it out of curiosity and then coming in at the start of the season 3 episode, Human Nature. From that point on, I was hooked on the show; going back and watching some of the original series while following the new one, and before I knew it, I had seen every single episode from '89 to present, as well as all the Dalek episodes from Genesis on up to the most recent one.

Since this will likely come up since I brought up Doctor Who, my favorite incarnation of the Doctor would have to be the 7th. He was definitely interesting; he seems goofy on the outside, but inside he was a cunning mastermind who saw the struggle between good and evil as being like a game of chess.
Title: Re: Favorite TV Shows
Post by: Chocofreak13 on June 04, 2011, 11:15:49 PM
the only Dr. Who i've seen is the "current" series, sadly, meaning that i've only seen the 9th-11th doctors. my sister had talked about it in a positive manner, but without the means to watch it it didn't enter my mind much. then we got upgraded cable, and BBC America; one day, when nothing was on, i was surfing the onscreen guide when i happened to see that the second half of the "Are you my Mummy?" episodes was on; out of curiosity i changed the channel, and i was instantly hooked. *w*

no series has been able to keep me as captive as SVU does until i watched Dr. Who. :3

also, tonight's episode was a little weird....the ending, at least. not sure if i really like this whole pregnancy arc.... :\
and that midwife seems a tad creepy. :\
Title: Re: Favorite TV Shows

If you ever get a chance, try watching some of the original series episodes. The 4th Doctor era ('74 to '81) is widely considered one of the best in the series, although I'm partial to the 7th Doctor episodes where he travels with Ace ('88 to '89).

I try to forget that the episodes from '87, with the Doctor traveling with Melanie Bush, ever happened...

was she the whiny one?

(i'm going off of this, (http://www.comicvine.com/myvine/doctor_____/anime-doctor-who/108-490017/4__530x_some_of_the_many_women_of_doctor_who/105-1538512/) mind you.)
Title: Re: Favorite TV Shows
Post by: Nichi on June 04, 2011, 11:48:08 PM
No; she's the one that's overly cheerful, between the whiny one (Peri, who wasn't memorable) and the one who's wearing a leather jacket (Ace, who is awesome).

Mel was completely useless; providing nothing of value to the show, and one of the episodes with her in it nearly got the show cancelled because of extremely low ratings. Not even Adric, the oft-hated Wesley Crusher-like character of the series, managed to do that.

:\

i've heard people describe donna and martha that way. :\
Title: Re: Favorite TV Shows
Post by: Nichi on June 05, 2011, 12:05:25 AM
The difference between them and Mel is that Donna was funny, Martha was actually kind of cool (She was my favorite companion until I went back to the older episodes and discovered Ace), and Mel could easily be dropped from every episode she's in with minimal impact on the story (Except for when she gets captured to provide filler).

I remember watching the Amanda Show, regardless of my sister complaining about how stupid it was. I mainly liked it for the Totally Kyle sketches

Another show I liked as a kid, that I guarantee most of you have probably never heard of, was Galador: Defenders of the Outer Dimension. It was a short-lived sci-fi series that aired during Fox Kids' final season, and from what I remember, was actually a pretty cool show. In fact, reading about it years later on Wikipedia is what lead me to giving Doctor Who a shot; as the article mentioned how the main character's spaceship (Called the EGG Ship) was inspired by the TARDIS.

oh lol, cyberchase. you can add that and liberty's kids to the 6-11 range. xD
also, kenshin, dragon ball z, and bobobo-bo-bobobo would be around 12-14, since that's when we got cable, and that was my saturday nights. :3

(of course, my memory's shot, so all of this time stuff is rather relative. >>; )
Title: Re: Favorite TV Shows
Post by: Nichi on June 07, 2011, 02:49:43 PM
I admit, Cyberchase held promise; it had an interesting concept, but was plagued by not-so-good writing.  Even when I revisited the series last summer for research for a top 20 list I was writing, the show still suffers from the same problems it did back in season 1.
Title: Re: Favorite TV Shows

to be honest, out of the educational shows, that one wasn't bad. it must have been tough to make symmetry fun. :\ (liberty's kids wasn't bad, either. i had quite the crush on one of the characters..... >>; )

is it sad that i can recite the opening to my favourite show from memory? :\
Title: Re: Favorite TV Shows
Post by: Nichi on June 07, 2011, 07:01:46 PM
It wasn't agonizingly bad, but it could have been better with a few improvements; like sending the characters to more unusual places (When I still watched it, I found most of the places they went to where rather plain; nothing that really wowed me). Or, going off a silly top 5 list I made a few years ago on the ways they can improve the show, replace Motherboard with 2k-tan

Speaking of having crushes on cartoon characters, I admit I had a crush on Inez at one point >_>
Title: Re: Favorite TV Shows
Post by: Chocofreak13 on June 07, 2011, 07:27:25 PM
heh, that would have spiced up the show, definitely. motherboard always creeped me out a bit (and her hair was kinda awful :\ ).

hmm, inez, who's that again? :\
Title: Re: Favorite TV Shows
Post by: Nichi on June 07, 2011, 07:59:46 PM
Inez was the girl with the glasses on Cyberchase.

Anyway, another show I enjoy would be The Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog. Compared to it's darker and more serious Saturday morning brethren, AOSTH was a lighthearted and goofy series that felt like the old Road Runner cartoons, but with an early '90s flare to it. I admit it's not the best series ever, but it's a guilty pleasure; one that I still enjoy watching on occasions.

If you want, I can PM you that list; if only for a quick laugh as the things I came up with

Never have watched the X-Files; my nightmare fuel when I was young came from that one time I happened to walk in on an episode of Rod Sterling's Night Gallery (Which, for those who don't know what that is, it's pretty much the '70s version of The Twilight Zone)

x-files was a little freaky, but i only remember one snippet of one episode, where this yellow rain killed a goat. :\

Yeah they where. Although, on a note related to that episode, Jimmy and Marina are inferior to their similar-in-appearance manga counterparts, Gold and Crystal.
Title: Re: Favorite TV Shows
Post by: Chocofreak13 on June 08, 2011, 07:40:55 PM
oh hell yes. i found the in-game "marina" to be much more badass than the way they depicted her in the anime (it was painful to watch).

She kicked ass in the manga, but she lost her soul in the anime; becoming a generic, Pokémon Contest-obsessed freak, like a majority of the other girls on the show.

Of all the main girls in that series, nobody will ever top Misty. In fact, I related more to her than Ash when I was a kid; she should have been the main character instead.

my sister always had control of the remote when i was young, so as a result i watched alot of buffy, charmed, and angel. xD

Along with my parents and sister. I never really got into that show, although they like it.

Anyway, another TV series I like is Star Trek: The Next Generation. Such a damn good show; tied with The Original Series as my favorite series in the franchise, although I'd like to see more of DS9

my dad loved that show. xD one of the few things he used to watch that wasn't the news. wonder if he'd like it if i informed him that it's still on (on the BBC). :3

this is random, but while i know battlestar galactica is a show, it sounds more like an 80's video game. :3

Trekkies thankfully aren't as bad as fans of K-On. At one time, there was a group of people on a board on GameFAQs where where complete freaks over that show; killing my interest in seeing it

i remember reading a story about the forbidden love between a trekkie and a star wars enthusiast. :3

also, i must say, i love comedy shows. not comedies, but actual stand-up or improv shows. ^^

I figured I might as well dust off this old topic
So, does anybody have a show they consider a guilty pleasure? Like, you know it's mediocre at best, but you still love it regardless?

For me, that show is The Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog. It may not be as popular or as well written as it's Saturday morning counterpart, simply titled Sonic the Hedgehog, but I still love it for how nonsensical and random it is :3
Title: Re: Favorite TV Shows
Post by: Bella on February 18, 2012, 04:35:22 PM
Guilty pleasures, eh? I can't say I enjoy any of these as much as I enjoy making fun of their absurdity, but just about anything on TLC qualifies (special notice goes to My Strange Addiction, Strange Sex, I Didn't Know I Was Pregnant), 16 and Pregnant, Manswers, and particularly narmy/anvilicious Lifetime original movies.
Title: Re: Favorite TV Shows

1000 Ways to Die, MANswers, Family Guy (somewhat), American Dad (somewhat). on rare occasions i'll watch ATHF or Squidbillies, which are also guilty pleasures.....if they can be called pleasures at all. :\

funny thing is, most of the shows i watch are either historical or mystery in nature. xD and if not that, cartoons. :3

(side note: i don't consider RuPaul's Drag Race to be a "guilty pleasure" since i have no shame in watching it. QUEEN FIGHT!! WHOO!!)

I watched 1000 Ways to Die once. Got an LOL out of one of the ways somebody died, but otherwise, not really my kind of show.

To be honest, aside from Warehouse 13 and Doctor Who, I don't watch much in the way of current TV shows anymore
Title: Re: Favorite TV Shows
Post by: Chocofreak13 on February 19, 2012, 05:09:53 PM
i'm stuck in familiar old shows. xD

@bella: i find what they have on there interesting, in the case of both shows. some of the more recent episodes of 1000 have me cringing a little, but for the most part i just shake my head and laugh at natural selection at work. -w-

as for Manswers, while i find the ones pertaining to boobs and asses annoying, the ones having to do with things like chemistry, kung fu, and international things pique my interest. :\

I like original footage series/documentaries too, like WWII in HD, Vietnam in HD, and this other one whose name I can't remember that was about life in Nazi Germany. They were all on The History Channel too, which is awesome 'cause they don't play too many history-related shows nowadays. : /

Why the change?

pawn stars is awesome, so i don't mind that they focus on series like that now. of course, we have expanded cable, meaning i get History2 and The Military Channel. so when i want a documentary series, i can get my fix with those. :\

currently watching house, which is like SVU only instead of sex crimes it has medical stuff. :\

hands up if you didn't know till now that Hugh Laurie (aka Greg House) is british. :3
Title: Re: Favorite TV Shows

I admit, I do enjoy Pawn Stars from time to time, but it's about like programming on the Weather Channel other than stuff revolving around the day's forecast; it's interesting, but IMO it's better suited for another network
Title: Re: Favorite TV Shows

I really don't mind Pawn Stars, American Restoration or American pickers being played on The History Channel. Since discussion of TV shows came up in the classic board games topic, I figured I'd dust off this old topic :3

The Big Bang Theory is a show that I occasionally watch. It's not bad, but I don't really go out of my way for it; not like I do for Doctor Who or Warehouse 13
Title: Re: Favorite TV Shows
Post by: Chocofreak13 on February 12, 2013, 10:47:44 PM
same here. i'm not into it the way my sister or mother are, but if one of them is watching it i'll join in.

as we speak i'm watching svu, but i'm looking at the computer as i type, meaning that while i still love the show, i no longer adore it, as it's hard to be surprised or captivated the way i was used to. the passions have cooled, and now i am left with a more cozy, familiar love for the show, watching it religiously but mostly as "slightly-more-than-background-noise" background noise.

semi-on-topic: i just saw an anime i really liked bashed in this magazine ;^;
Title: Re: Favorite TV Shows
Post by: Nichi on February 13, 2013, 12:03:36 AM
I know that feel. I often see shows I like get trashed in reviews (Warehouse 13 is often a target; especially in its earlier seasons, although more recent seasons seem to have won over some of the naysayers)

As for watching a show a lot, that's how I feel about the Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog. I watched it every morning when Toon Disney still aired it, and have seen all but the Christmas special (Which was an unofficial part of the series; I'm not sure if it's included on the DVD sets, or if I have to track down the single-episode disc of it). Unfortunately, in early 2003, they dropped it from their schedule in favor of Disney's Doug, along with some other shows I liked. I at least own the first volume of the series on DVD; I just need to track down the other two volumes.

Recently, I've discovered a new guilty pleasure of a series; a lesser-known Power Rangers knock-off from the mid '90s, called Superhuman Samurai Syber-Squad (Yes, that's "syber" with an S instead of a C, because poor literacy is kewl! [/at4w]). The basic conflict of the show is setup in probably the silliest manner possible; our protagonist gets the phone number of a girl he's interested in, another guy is pissed off about this, and somehow by a stroke of luck ends up in contact with an all-powerful computer program who can turn his artwork into monsters to wreck havoc on cyberspace. The guy who got the phone number ends up, by the power of plot convenience, an electric guitar, and a CompaqTM DeskProTM computer, becomes Gridman Servo; a character he created for a video game he was playing, which gives him the ability to fight the evil stock footage monsters and protect cyberspace.

It's cheesy, but I find myself enjoying it because of how cheesy it is :3
Title: Re: Favorite TV Shows

men in rubber costumes a la the original godzilla. guilty pleasures abound. -w-

now if only they'd release Kamen Rider with subs. of course, the only reason i want to see it is OS-tan. xD

in recent months i've gotten very into storage wars. it had come to a point where i had seen most Pawn Stars episodes on tv, and Storage Wars was something fresh. staged or not, it's entertaining, though the melodrama can get a bit old at times. ^^;

maybe, but tbh i'm not sure if i'd make it a priority.

stew mentioned this in the "what's playing?" thread, but i'll repost the jist of it here: how annoying is it that most shows these days are just "the ____"? i think it started with the apprentice, but lately all the new stuff coming out that isn't a sitcom (though even some of the sitcoms follow the formula, too) is so uninspired in the name department. i realize they're trying to be "edgy" and "cool" and "hip" and "now" but really what they're doing is making themselves look like lazy, poorly educated assholes. :\

Indeed. Everything having a title like that automatically makes me think of Tommy Wiseau's The Room (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Room_%28film%29). Not a very good connection to make; considering that movie is so god-awful it's unintentionally funny.

Also, there's this talk show on some of the local channels called The Doctors. You have no idea how pissed off I was that it had nothing to do with Doctor Who, but instead revolved around real doctors answering medical questions.

@Alfonso: I don't quite get it. If those are example against the "The [word]" titles, I have to point out that SVU premiered in 1998

Ah. Cool ^^

At the moment, of currently running shows, Doctor Who and Warehouse 13 are the ones I go out of my way for, while most everything else I watch is on a "when it's on and I'm not busy" basis (Since I barely have access to the TV, most of what I watch is internet series like Nostalgia Critic, The Cinema Snob, Atop the Fourth Wall, etc.)
Title: Re: Favorite TV Shows

my tastes has shifted over time and as more or less channels were available. i used to watch a lot more animal cops, for example. (after awhile i got sick of the reruns and sads. :[ )
Title: Re: Favorite TV Shows

I remember I used to watch The Planet's Funniest Animals a lot when nothing else was on, until I got sick of the reruns (Also, I Can Has Cheezburger replaced it as my source for funny things involving animals)

Now, one show I very much was sick of but mom kept watching religiously was Murder, She Wrote. That show was so lame, and it was so strictly formula that every episode had the exact same pacing that it was boring, but it felt like either mom was oblivious to it or was just watching it to piss me off as it meant I couldn't play Diddy Kong Racing :\

Granted, she seemed to be drawn to the bottom-tier mystery shows and ignores the better ones; like how she'd honestly watch Matlock over SVU >>;

Don't you rag on Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman!  Or Murder, She Wrote!  God my after school TV watching was boring.

TV is a difficult thing for me, because of my room's layout in general and the fact that I have a difficult time remembering TV schedules so I typically miss whatever it is I was going to watch.
Title: Re: Favorite TV Shows

As far as after-school TV when I was a kid, I typically watched Power Rangers and Spider-Man when I was younger, and during my senior year of high school it was Star Trek: Enterprise (Which I actually kind of liked. It's not the best Star Trek ever, but it was enjoyable)

Well, you had WGBH; one of PBS' flagship stations, which helped create a good chunk of their programming nationwide, so I'd imagine they'd have a solid lineup of shows (As an interesting note, even if you've never set foot in Boston, you most likely know dat logo and synth tune (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TQTy211L6X0) from the end credits of at least 60% of PBS shows; including Arthur)

As for KERA (The Dallas-area PBS station), their most noteworthy contribution is being the first station in the US to air Monty Python uncut. Also, their daytime schedule sucked; after Where in Time is Carmen SanDiego was cancelled in '98 or so, they had nothing for the elementary school age group until Cyberchase

Unrelated to the futuristic racing game on PlayStation, Wipeout seems like an idiotic attempt at making an American version of Ninja Warrior, while completely missing the entire point. While Ninja Warrior is more about challenging the physical abilities of their contestants, Wipeout puts a heavier emphasis on "lol, slapstick" and adults who, as kids, most likely failed to properly assemble the statue in the Shrine of the Silver Monkey.

Now, Ninja Warrior on the other hand is a cool show. After a while, it was the only thing that kept me occasionally watching G4

hivemind, srsly. i hate that show with a firey passion. it just goes to show yet another example of how america ruins things from other cultures. (one missed call, all of the Ring movies, etc etc.) and to put it on a once-respectable network (the former CourtTV) makes it all the much more hated in my book. just thinking about it puts a scowl on my face. ><;;;

Cool Japan on NHK World

It's pretty interesting. People from different countries gather in Japan and look a cultural things like food, anime, games, music, fashion, that sort of thing. After people look around Japan, they explain what the liked, and how it would be looked at in the west.

MUST TORRENT

besides anime, ever wish that a foreign show was over here? there was a Scandinavian prank show i heard about once that i wish i could find. plus, if the Ruby Gloom animated series could make it to US TV (Ruby Gloom began life as a series of shirts and other items, similar to Emily the Strange, but was eventually made into a Canadian cartoon), i'd die of happiness on the spot. ;v;

I remember seeing clips on YouTube years ago of a Japanese series all about epic trap modes (A guy goes on there, and he's given a makeover to look like a girl). I wish I could remember the name, because I'd love to see more; it's the only sort of makeover show I'd be interested in >w>;

(In fact, I'd love to be able to have something like that done to me ^_~)

i never understood much of seinfeld. i got an occasional laugh (note the context quote posting i made from it a few weeks ago), but otherwise it was never my taste. i think my mum liked/likes it, though.

as for pawn stars, i really like the show, but my feelings about it have cooled the way they have for svu, simply because i've seen 90% of the episodes already. the fact that it's semi-staged kinda bothers me, though. >>;

@leaf: nah, i'll just find a torrent. there's a torrent somewhere.

You know, one show I'm let down never continued was Galidor: Defenders of the Outer Dimension.

It was a live-action sci-fi series for kids that aired during Fox Kids' final season before 4Kids took over the block ('01 to '02), and honestly it was cool. I was skeptical of it at first, but I ended up catching an episode and got hooked; when the season finale ended on a cliffhanger, I eagerly awaited the next season to premiere. I felt that they had to pick this back up; it was too good not to, and if anything, they should cancel Power Rangers: Wild Force.

Unfortunately, it was cancelled. Apparently, there were some conflict behind the scenes over who held the rights to the series, which prevented another season from being produced. However, maybe one day it'll be finished; the actor who played Nick Bluetooth, the show's main character, has mentioned before in interviews that he's considered trying to fund creation of a comic book series to continue the story, since he really loved working on the series as a kid.

My dad loves it, which is odd because we share a lot of TV programming preferences in common (SCTV, MST3K).  I've honestly just never found it funny.  I get that its supposed to be all lolsmart and witty and they don't need no comedy rules man to tell them what to do, but I just never connected with the cast or their jokes.  With Pawn Stars, or Storage Wars, the whole concept repulses me.  You're essentially trying to make a living ripping desperate people/idiots off.  Yeah yeah Bells constantly reminds me that the people get compensated for appearing on screen, but the concept still repulses me.

Other shows I don't like: CSI, SVU.  The latter just got too insane for me; I miss the UST between Cabot and Benson too....

Also: Every so often I remember TV shows I liked a as a kid.  The Kratz brothers' original show on PBS was what I usually watched before school, also Cyberspace, Tugs, Arthur, and others I'll remember eventually.  One series I loved as a kid that I finally got around to getting on DVD is Black Sheep Squadron.  Its a pretty pulpy WWII series based on the memoires of Maj. Gregory 'Pappy' Boyington, but it doesn't really stick to them that close.  Still I loved it then and love it now.

My parents loved Seinfeld and I remember seeing fragments of it when it first aired (I couldn't have been older than 5 or 6), later on when I was in my early teens I watched it a lot and thought it was hilarious but then it kinda ran its course and now I just find it worn out and unfunny. In hindsight the characters are fairly horrendous, I mean, they're SUPPOSED to be awful and unlikeable, but I tend to not get into shows where I can't empathize with / feel apathetic toward the characters. (It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia is a rare exception to this rule.)

CSI I can't stand either, although this was another series I watched quite a lot in my early teens. u.u;;;

SVU is fuckin' awesome but I can't get into the newer episodes. In the past year or so I've started to gain an appreciation for Regular Law & Order, but Criminal Intent still annoys me. >>

The only PBS shows I remember watching with any level of consistency as a kid are Arthur, Reading Rainbow, Sesame Street... and that one with the lions who owned the book store or library or something ... and there was this other where these kids, like, built things and did science projects and stuff? But I'm totally blanking on the name, dammit. I'm sure there are others I'm forgetting too... :/

seinfeld = no
csi = hell no
always sunny in philadelphia = god god fuck no anything but that
svu = anything past season 12 is utter trash, and even some of the more recent episodes from that pool grate on my nerves at times
law and order = childhood memories but not the same hook as svu
criminal intent = ugh
pbs shows = fond childhood memories of me and my sister doing homework to the tune of arthur, liberty's kids (especially liberty's kids) and cyberchase, and occasionally zoom and bill nye (though BN aired mostly on weekends if i recall)
other = i have faint memories of reading rainbow from when i was very young, and i also loved Between the Lions, the show bells mentioned with the lions in the library. when i was younger, they also had a show called The Big Comfy Couch, which involved a clown and her doll learning all sorts of moral lessons and the like. i had the doll. -w-

Big Comfy Couch!  I was pretty little when I watched that, and Lambchop.

Title: Re: Favorite TV Shows
Post by: Chocofreak13 on February 19, 2013, 10:23:10 AM
big comfy couch was a fun show. i really enjoyed it, since it was informative but not preachy. it kind of had the pee-wee's playhouse vibe but without the 80's motif or the unsettling air of creepy. (though peewee seems like a nice guy.)

@stew: funny, i have faint memories of watching lambchop! i think i had a lambchop puppet when i was small. it might have been a little before my time.

@leaf: me too, me too. i never saw it played on tv, but that didn't matter since i had all the videotapes anyway. -w- i'd like to get the two movies, since i really enjoyed those, too. (the second movie in particular was interesting because the story was a bit darker; i think this may have been around the time my taste for dark, gripping stories developed.)

@alfonso: i remember watching Zaboomafoo as a kid. the theme song annoyed the crap out of me, but since my dad's so big into eco-stuff and nature and all that jazz, i was sort of indoctrinated into shows that dealt with nature like that. it was around the time i was getting ranger rick magazine anyway so it sort of fell in line with that. plus the show taught me about those neato little fish-flavoured cakes that you can leave around in the wild that prevent rabies. (they're a bit bigger than a chunk of bubblegum. :3 )

@pent: i was thinking of torrenting some of it. if i find it, you maybe want the files?
Title: Re: Favorite TV Shows

Not really. I'm not quite interested in it enough for you to pass the entire series onto me, but thanks for the offer

I do remember liking Zaboomafoo. Never saw their original series, Kratts' Creatures, aside from a VHS tape from the library; which I don't remember much of. Granted, I don't remember much of Zaboomafoo beyond the "Zabooland" segments; which were animated in claymation...and the fact I couldn't take Zabuza from Naruto seriously at first, due to my immediate thought being Zaboo.

On a similar note on the bit on Zabuza, I found it hard to take the villain of Monster Rancher seriously due to his name. In Japanese, his name is "Muu", which apparently means "emptiness" in Japanese, while in the English version, his name is "Moo"; as in the sound a cow makes. Thus, as a kid I constantly cracked jokes about how, when the mystery of Moo's true form was first introduced, that he's be an evil cow.

Aaah, I remember Big Comfy Couch now! Thanks for helping me unearth that childhood memory.

I remember Lambchop, the character, but idk if I ever watched the show. (Side-note: Luci's favorite toy is a little squeaky Lambchop, haha.)

As for shows I like, both current and off-the-air: Lost, Fringe (minus the final season because that sucked tbh), Firefly, The Office (US), Arrested Development (though I'm a disappointed that most of the jokes / references sound completely weird and unfunny out-of-context, so no clips or GIFs ... ), Justified (even if I'm still pissed about Dicky being killed off, god Jeremy Davies played the best hillbilly ever...) Doctor Who (depending on the series >>), Futurama, Adventure Time, MLP:FIM ... and The Colbert Report and Daily Show ... I also watch a ton of true crime shows.

Oh yeah, and re-imagined Battlestar Galatica ... I watched part of the second and third season in rerun and then the last season when it aired, but I just recently got back into it. I have to hunt down and watch the hell out of the first / second seasons. That show is so great, super, mind-bogglingly sad at times but also really really awesome I can't even explain.

the funny thing is, most of my early memories are more like watching a video since i can see myself rather than looking through 1st-person view. but this memory IS in 1st-person view.

beyblade was nothing but a source of crappy jokes for me. i never watched it, but laughed whenever someone said "LET IT RIP!!" (*thinks of cheap fart joke*)

I used to watch Barney when I was little. That's all I will say on the matter, as I honestly can't stand that show now >_>;;

As for Beyblade, I used to think it was cool in its first season or two. I kind of lost interest after a while; at the point the bit beasts were rendered in cell-shaded CG instead of the really cool stylized look of the early episodes (Which was very simple, being a sketch over a white glow in the rough outline of it, but it was cooler than seeing detailed CG bit beasts)

a lot of shows lose their lustre over time. i stopped watching digimon after season 3, but that's because EVERYONE agrees that season 4 ruined it. ruined it all.

however, yu-gi-oh is a better example, as after GX things got weird...and stupid. (card games on motorcycles....? seriously??)

Indeed. I actually didn't care much for GX, but it was alright. Never watched 5D's

As for Digimon, I've heard season 5 (Digimon: Data Squad) is actually pretty good; it being made several years later in an attempt to reboot the franchise after season 4 (Digimon Frontier) killed it. I've never seen it, but I've considered trying it out

OK OK OK... got MIA lost in Pokemon and other stuff, but I'm baack...

DIGIMON: Loved each Season... unlike most of Ya I found Frontier to be okish to Good... Loved the Spirits thing... Half watched DTS (Disney XD is airing it at %:00-5:30 A.M.!) seemed interesting... Xros wars (Fusion - WTF/FTW Nick?- For the US)... Saw snippets of it, and Only watched the third season of it (The moron who had a moron Digimon as a partner and did moron things to capture digidata) and was cool, thought I find the Digi xross moronic I admit it has it's advantages... and was cool to see all old Leaders together like Rock vs Cena in WM28...

Recess (And Filmoore): I oughta Say I miss the Original Nicktoons and the Disney Channel Originals too... Loved both Series, alongside Doug, Angry Beavers and other Nickilicious stuff, even the Alien moron (invader Zim)
Title: Re: Favorite TV Shows

Invader Zim is a classic :3

Also, every time I hear someone mention Disney Channel Original Series, I start thinking about what was easily my favorite of the bunch: So Weird

So Weird was a live-action series that, in a way, feels like a kid-friendly predecessor to Supernatural (Which is one I'd like to see more of); the show being about a girl named Fiona trying to find out what happened to her long-lost father, which leads to her studying and encountering the supernatural. It was a damn good series; easily the best of the bunch that Disney Channel had circa '99-'01...well, except the show's final season; which had a new main character, and wasn't near as well written :\

But, the first 2 seasons were good. It's one of those shows that, like Galidor, I'd like to eventually see again

@Kari: Cool :3

Another one I thought about I enjoyed as a kid. Has anyone else watched any of the Carmen Sandiego TV series?

There were three of them: two game shows produced by PBS stations, and an animated series produced by DIC. The game shows were pretty cool; maybe not Legends of the Hidden Temple cool, but still pretty damn cool in how clever of an idea it was (Making two game shows for kids that tests their knowledge of world history and geography. It's not only entertaining, but also educational :3).

As for the animated series, it was like Johnny Quest to some extent, which made for a cool series; one that lasted 4 seasons before they decided to end it. It was definitely an enjoyable addition to the kickass Fox Kids lineup of the mid '90s -w-

(though the series DID have live-action segments, remember? at the beginning and end?)

Hi Hi Puffy Ami Yumi:

After the Success of Teen Titan(ic)s' opening in the US,  The Demoness known as CN decided to make an Animated show about the JPop band Puffy (Which, to avoid confussions with Puffy (Puff Daddy) decided to remane themselves Puffy AmiYumi...) The show on itself was hilarious as Hell And Had some episodes with interventions from the band itself in Live Action...

True Crime Shows:

My Cokemonz' Rival (Feno, AKA Feni AKA Dad) Watches them a lot

the show is actually what turned me on to the band, and 3 purchased CDs and a couple torrented ones later, and they're the band i have the most music of, unless you count Vocaloids. :3
tbh though i like to refer to them as PUFFY whenever possible, since it avoids confusion that way (all their JP albums are released under PUFFY).

i've watched so many crime shows i'm actually recognizing when a perp from one shows up on another. :0

huh? you mean them on the show? the introduction and ending were both live-action. :\

good stuff, those were some of my first tunes by them. i used to loop the songs on my stereo and sing as loud as i could. >w<

if you're into their more rock stuff, i reccomend Sunrise, Jet Police (maybe), and definitely Sayonara (this is one of my favourite songs by them; i even declared it the "song of summer 2006"). -w-

if you feel like listening to something a bit more experimental, try Lemon Kid (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jsEvDTKuuwY) (a wonderful jazz piece), Ai no Shirushi (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7pLZS6i8noY) (sort of parade-y), and SNACKS (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9PAFP03Kb80) (which i can only describe as 60's).

we're so OT.... ><;;

hm, i get annoyed when i try to watch something at my grandparents' just to find out they don't get the channel, when we do at home. >>;
to make matters worse, only one TV gets the full lineup, the other 2 have smaller cable boxes so they get a limited roster. >>;

I hated that so much as a kid. But, my grandpa did have a cable box put in the back room for me (Where I typically watched TV), since I spent every Sunday afternoon over there :3

Ah, nothing like drinking tea and watching Invader Zim on a nice Sunday afternoon

@Pent: I never watched Invader Zim. Archie was the only thing on. But I've heard good stuff about it.

You know what was a good show? imagine-nation (http://www3.nhk.or.jp/nhkworld/english/tv/imagine/index.html) I bet you've probably heard of it/watched it before, but if you haven't it's basically some gaming show.

ISN'T IT AWESOME
MAKES IT EVEN SWEETER THAT I KNOW IT BY HEART >:3

my sister has all 3 seasons of Invader Zim on DVD. given that we've both always been into darker comics/cartoons when we weren't reading manga (well, i read more than her), Invader Zim was a natural fit. only made it better that it was from the same artist that gave us the Gemstone that is JTHM. -w-
also, that show looks pretty damn sweet. :0

@pent: i'm surprised your mother let you watch that. i would assume she'd call it the devil's work or something. xD

oh yes... here I have two options: Cablevision basic cable and Sky's VeTV. in Cable we have basic programme, but since is straight thru cables, there's no cable box so are fewer choices, while on VeTV are less chanels (Comparing Cable having Disney (Channel and XD), Nick, Discovery Kids (which airs lots of PBS shows and MLP:FIM (yuck)) and Cartoon Network against the VeTV of Disney (channel and XD) and Nick Jr.) that without counting the local channels which could include Channel 5, 11 Tv and Channel 22 (this one traditionally airing Anime on the hollidays starting at Midnight. Here i watched Eva)

Now, for something I felt like doing; a post highlighting 4 intros from a random selection of shows I've watched over the years in chronological order:

Power Rangers Zeo (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8-ENGd0JxwI). Ah, the '90s; when shows about people in spandex fighting people in rubber monster costumes were all the rage -w- (Also, I totally have that song on my iPod)
Outlaw Star (Toonami intro) (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=skJlNAHDSYc). I'm in the minority of people who preferred this over Dragon Ball Z
The Screen Savers (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MQdH-iE3vho). Awesomely nerdy show with a lovably cheesy intro? Sold! >:3 (Also, I want that theme song on my iPod)
Fullmetal Alchemist (Original series, 4th intro) (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-zUdVAm_ImI). I remember staying up until midnight to watch this (Also, another song I want on my iPod)

1. oh god power rangers my poor innocent eyes ugh what the hell did i just watch lol DAT 90's MULLET
2. 90's anime style like i used to try to draw.....all the reason i need to watch this show
3. i am now tempted to try to track down the theme song for you.
4. as awesome as the final moments are, my loyalty lies with opening 2. -w-

Power Rangers: One of those series you can't make me give a shit about.  No offense meant, but it just wasn't part of my childhood much less something that interests me now.

You know, something I was thinking about: What are some TV shows you liked at first, but slowly lost interest in?

For me, one that stands out in my mind is the '09 reboot of V (Based loosely on an earlier sci-fi series from the '80s). I enjoyed it at first, even though I'm not terribly fond of alien invasion stories (I find them to be a bit too generic as far as sci-fi goes), and with the cliffhanger at the end of the first season, I eagerly awaited the continuation...which didn't come until nearly a year later; season 1 ended in May 2010, and without any sort of announcement that it'd be delayed (At least, from what I remember), the second season didn't begin until January 2011. By that point, I had lost interest in it; I tried to watch it again when it came back, but it failed to interest me like it did when it began.
Title: Re: Favorite TV Shows
Post by: Bella on August 01, 2013, 12:04:57 AM
There was a second season? I assumed it just got cancelled after the first.

It's funny you mention V, since I had a similar experience with that series. I WANTED to like it - the plot sounded interesting, it wasn't flat-out awful from the onset and it starred Elizabeth Mitchell and Morena Baccarin for gawd sake - but idk, it just didn't live up to expectations and there was nothing interesting or special enough about it to keep me watching.

Another one I can think of was Flashforward. It had an interesting premise (everyone on earth blacked out for several minutes and witnessed a glimpse of their future lives; the series followed a group of seemingly-unrelated people as they tried to piece together their futures and figure out what caused the "flash-foward") but it ended up being a rather vapid science-fiction mystery with no satisfying answers. And it got cancelled, so thanks ABC for making me waste a dozen hours of my life sitting through it.

Then again, I just looked it up and found out it was based on a novel, so maybe I'll give that a read and find out how it ended. >>
Title: Re: Favorite TV Shows
Post by: Nichi on August 01, 2013, 09:49:42 AM
I remember when I first heard about FlashForward, I thought it was a reboot of the Disney Channel sitcom from the early '90s and not a sci-fi series. Granted, when ABC announced Lost years prior, I thought they were bringing back the failed NBC reality show that I actually somewhat enjoyed instead of creating an all-new series ^^;;

Another one I lost interest in was Xena: Warrior Princess. I remember enjoying it way back when (It aired in a block on the weekend with Hercules: The Legendary Journeys; a show I still enjoy even years later), but toward the end of the series, at about the point Hercules ended, Xena started getting stupid; throwing in random new plot points that ultimately went nowhere. After a strange story arc about her being the reincarnated form of a great warrior of the past, only for the conclusion to basically be an uneventful "nope; she's not", I stopped watching.

how did i miss this thread lololol

to talk about the past topic, SVU has lost its spark for me somewhat; i keep it on for background noise only at times. though i'm still loyal to the show and watch it whenever i can. but anything past season 11 is stuff i don't watch, it's not even the same show anymore come season 12. (they REALLY should have just ended it there, since unless they plan to bring Stabler back as some GIGANTIC PLOT TWIST LOL, it really doesn't feel worth it.)

on a related note, are there any shows you guys love but they never seem to play anymore? my list goes:

New Detectives
Unsolved Mysteries
The Simpsons
King of the Hill (somewhat)
The First World War (thankfully i torrented it all already)
Flapjack/Chowder
House
Deadly Women
Doctor Who

there are probably others but i can't think of them right now. :\

The second Chowder ended it disappeared from Cartoon Network, sadly.  Same with Flapjack but I didn't really like that to begin with.

they started sporadically playing Flapjack episodes in the mornings but idk if they still do, they varied in time so i never got a consistent read. perhaps they were just intended for filler. but Chowder, Chowder remains a mystery to me. it was more popular than Flapjack from what i can tell, but i didn't even know it HAD an ending. was there even a finale?

No telling on Chowder.

On a semi-related note, for roughly a month or so back in '08, Nickelodeon was airing old episodes of Legends of the Hidden Temple in early morning; sparking a rumor that they were probing for interest in a revived edition, but it seems they only did that because they needed filler (Still, interesting they pick that over, say, adding an extra episode of Spongebob each day).

My mom used to watch Unsolved Mysteries a lot when I was a kid, so it's rather nostalgic for me. However, I don't like the modern version of it, with the new intro; in my opinion, the cheesy late '80s intro (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AGcyUlCAkFc) is part of what gave it a strange charm (Also, dat music).

Also, on the subject of shows I like that are rarely shown anymore (Just to name a few; a majority of what I like has basically disappeared from television, and I rarely get to try anything new if it comes on when mom's watching something, so...):

- Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (I watched the first half of season 1 and enjoyed it...but nobody airs it anymore, so IDK how to go about finishing it short of tracking down DVDs)
- Eureka (I stopped watching it around the time I was studying for the GED, then the show had its finale a few months later...and now it's almost never on, and when it is, it's an episode I've already seen)
- Monty Python's Flying Circus (Glad I have the rips I made of my sister's DVD box set; last time I saw it broadcast was circa '09 on IFC, and before that was April Fool's Day '06 on BBC America)
- Doctor Who, pre-2006 (When I see it on, it's always either a recent Matt Smith episode or a fan favorite David Tennant episode; everything Christopher Eccelson comes on maybe once every few months, while everything Sylvester McCoy on back never airs at all unless it ties into some documentary :\ )
- Are You Afraid of the Dark (This show almost never airs anymore, except occasionally around Halloween, and even then, it might be shown one year but not the next)
- The Sarah Jane Adventures (I only ever saw this aired once; in a random early morning marathon on Syfy. It was quite popular in the UK, but here it was barely a blip on the radar; being overshadowed by Torchwood as far as Doctor Who spin-offs go)
Title: Re: Favorite TV Shows
Post by: Chocofreak13 on October 25, 2013, 03:48:02 PM
that intro seems familiar, but i think most of what me and my sister watched was the later episodes. :0

also, another one i forgot: My Life as a Teenage Robot. they started airing the "lost" episodes on Nicktoons a few years ago and i watched it religiously, but they slowly phased it out in favour of stupid cartoons (read: Tuff Puppy), live-action shows or old revivals (Digimon, Yu-Gi-Oh, etc etc). :\

I remember watching an episode of that show once. All I remember was this villainous wind-up robot toy that, personality wise, seemed like Zim xD

Also, of all the original shows Nicktoons Network has had, I admit I had a soft spot for Three Delivery. A shame it was cancelled after one season; as it's as close as we'll ever get to a Ninja Burger animated series :\

If you have the room, I've got like fifty old low quality home recorded DVDs with the entire series plus season 1 and 2 of TOS.

I must've watched the same Sarah Jane Adventures marathon you did Pent.

Started watching the series Mr. Robot after a former DEC acquaintance of mine recommended it on FB. It follows a group of hackers plotting to take down a massive corporate conglomerate, the main character himself being a software engineer working for a computer security firm.

So far it has not disappointed: good writing, good acting and direction, splendid suspense, many characters are morally ambiguous and uncomfortably sketchy without coming off as overly-edgy or trying too hard, they're also fairly diverse in terms of race, gender, sexuality and religion. The depictions of computers and hacking are fairly realistic (no flying through system files, gaudy interfaces or technological word-salad statements) and the scenario is elaborate enough to be intriguing, while plausible enough to seem like something that could almost happen.

If you like Halt & Catch Fire I recommend giving it a shot since they're both computer dramas, albeit from quite opposite directions.

Is it recent or old, or do you have any other details?

Speaking of cartoons, I'm watching Bob's Burgers, Rick and Morty and Gravity Falls semi-regularly now.

Gravity Falls looks really cute and childish (art-style wise) but it's surprisingly dark at times, especially for a G-rated show. It's really good though, from what I've seen of it.

You know, a random thought I had as I was getting ready for bed, that relates to the subject of TV shows:

Have you ever seemed to recall seeing an episode of a show many years ago, but you can't seem to find any info indicating that episode even existed at all? Because, I can think of a few examples:

One example I can think of is with an episode of Sailor Moon. I don't remember which season it was from (I'm fairly certain it was the first season, though), but it involved the Sailor Scouts fighting a monster themed around tennis...and turning Molly (Or whatever her name was in the Japanese version) into a giant tennis ball (Like, her head sticking out of a giant tennis ball). I remember seeing it during the show's run on USA Network, but when Cartoon Network reaired the first season in preparation for Sailor Moon R, I don't remember this episode being played (Although it's entirely possible it was aired one of those times I didn't get to watch; like when dad was off for some holiday and he had full control over the TV, so I'd miss out on all my usual afternoon Toonami shows). To be fair, I've yet to actually sit down and rewatch Sailor Moon, so maybe the episode does exist and I just missed the Cartoon Network airing of it.

Now, one that baffles me currently is with a Barney tape I used to have as a kid, of what I believe was a Christmas special. I just remember my sister stopping the tape when it got to a part with the kids rapping about wrapping presents (I don't recall mom making her do it, or mom being involved at all; I just remember not understanding what my sister was saying and being upset over not getting to watch Barney). I no longer have the tape, as it was sold off ages ago, but I can't find any proof of it existing; I know that Lupa reviewed a Barney Christmas special, but it was one from '98, and I'm guessing it was maybe '94 or so when this happened, and from looking over the Wikipedia article on home video releases of Barney over the years, the only Christmas special listed at all is the one from '98. For all I know, it might not have even been Barney; it was so long ago that all I can really recall was a scene with kids rapping about wrapping Christmas presents, which really could have been anything.

There's likely others, but given I should have gone to bed hours ago, and here I am typing all of this, I'll add more later. Feel free to cite your own examples or comment in the meantime

For the longest time I thought I completely hallucinated an episode of The Simpsons, because I'd only ever seen it once when I was a little kid and it was super weird. It wasn't until much later that I found information about it online. (It was the Halloween episode segment where Homer fell into some sort of 3D alternate dimension, by the way.)

there have been a few shows that, after watching as a kid, i could find no one else who had seen it. i would have been like that one person on tumblr that assumed Sagwa was one giant fever dream, but a childhood friend's dad made a terrible joke about Sagwa when i was a kid, so because of that independent account, i knew they were real.

there's an episode of The Powerpuff Girls that is like that for me, though. some sort of clip show one. :0

@Pent: that episode of Sailor Moon exists. pretty sure it's either first season or VERY early R. it's featured in the "Meet Sailor Moon: Crystal" book i have. :0

(i need to get the rest of those....)

Post by: Nichi on November 23, 2015, 11:24:29 PM
Sounds like me with Captain Simian & The Space Monkeys. I faintly recall seeing an episode of it as a kid, but nobody else seems to remember it, and for years, I couldn't remember the title of the show; I just recalled it as "a cartoon that was like Star Trek, but with monkeys". Sadly, much like other extremely obscure shows I remember watching as a kid, like Ocean Girl, finding a working torrent of them is next to impossible.

As far as TV shows, I know I've mentioned this one in the past, but I remember seeing previews for a show on Fox Kids called either "The Lunatics" or "The Balloonatics", that I remember was supposed to air before the premiere episode of Power Rangers Zeo...but I overslept, only getting up in time for Power Rangers. However, nobody seems to remember it; my dad only vaguely remembered the show's title, my sister had no idea what I was talking about, Wikipedia has zero information on it (Although there was some really old slapstick short film with a similar title), and checking a website that had old listings for Saturday morning cartoons spanning the '70s through the early '00s, no show with that title was listed; the show that aired on Fox Kids before the first episode of Power Rangers Zeo was a rerun of the season 3 finale of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. I even checked Wikipedia's list of everything to ever air on Fox Kids, and again; nothing by that title. The only lead I ever got on the mystery was someone on TV Tropes, whom said that it was a failed pilot pitched to Fox, and claimed they saw it online somewhere and would find the link for me...but they never replied, and my searches for it have turned up fruitless.

Back on the earlier bit on episodes, I do vaguely recall during one of the many "Twisted List" segments on The Screen Savers*, circa '03\'04, in which there was a mentioning of OS-tans; showing a clip from this video of XP-tan in front of a Windows XP desktop (The one where she was saying something like "Welcome back, user; I'm happy you're back" in Japanese). While I did stumble upon that XP-tan clip again a while back (I want to say it's on Kari's OS-tan playlist, but it's been so long that I'm not 100% certain of that), I have not been able to find any evidence of it being shown on The Screen Savers...and with G4 now defunct, taking their TechTV Archive down with them, my only hope is to spend a lot of free time sifting through the various areas of the Internet Archive in hopes I find anything.
(*A reoccurring segment of that show, in which show correspondent Martin Sargent gives a top 5 list of whatever strange stuff he recently found on the internet; for example, stupid internet games or weird things for sale on Amazon)

Alright; maybe sometime, I'll try to go find it -w-;;

For some reason (Perhaps due to Joel talking about attending a Christian school, during one of his streams from last month), I began thinking about some of the Christian shows I watched as a kid...well, one I only ever watched twice in my entire life because it was that stupid:

Right at the start of the '00s, I was at my grandmother's house (On my mom's side) as everyone was having a slumber party there, and I was hanging out with my older and younger cousins. Someone brought a VHS tape of this show called "Bibleman" for the kids to watch; a show that both of my cousins seemed to enjoy, but I had never heard of. Part of me wonders if my older cousin really did like this, or if he was just putting on a face to appeal to our younger cousin, whom looked up to him like an older brother; especially when I mentioned that I liked Power Rangers, and he questioned how I could like "that kiddy garbage"...nevermind that Bibleman made Power Rangers look like Stargate SG-1 (A show I should really finish...but that's beside the point).

Now, as for the show itself...it was terrible; it was trying to be a "Christian Batman", with a tone that feels like they want to be viewed like the old Adam West series...except, without the charm; the part I remember most was my younger cousin (Whom was 4 years old at the time) shouting "BIBLE POOP" during the intro, because he had just learned the word "poop" and was having fun with it. At least, the episode I saw dropped the parts with kids singing ala Barney; which was something present on the episode Brad Jones looked at (http://www.thecinemasnob.com/dvd-r-hell/dvd-r-hell-bibleman).

In fact, the only reason I even saw the show a second time was because of wanting to see Brad Jones making fun of it; especially when the slumber party that I ended up seeing that damn thing was a disaster, and aside from "bible poop", the only other good part was when my mom made up some BS about needing to get my sister and I home to do school...when really she was just as sick of being around her family as I was, with us getting back home just in time to catch the new episode of Outlaw Star. I do have other stories about dealing with my cousins...but perhaps that'd be best if I revived the old "Relationships" topic.
Title: Re: Favorite TV Shows
Post by: Chocofreak13 on January 02, 2016, 11:53:19 PM
that show sounds heinous. it also reminds me that i didn't find out Veggie Tales was a Christian program until a few years after i saw it. (i didn't own any of the tapes, though, my best friend did. :0 )

on the topic of disappointments, i've recently learned that a show i was really hyped for, The Miraculous Ladybug, has started airing here. i had heard word of this project a year or two ago and had heard it was going to be either an anime or CG; it was being worked on by French, Korean, and Japanese animation houses and it sounded really cool. so when i heard it got a dub and a US release i was psyched. however, i heard the theme song today....and it's shit. oh good god is it shit. and the voice acting's bad, and the lyrics are terrible, and it goes on for 2 fricken' minutes....

i would just skip over it were it not for some other obvious flaws. don't know why, but Ladybug's US release skips over an episode with no explanation. combine that with the shitty theme song (compared it to the French and Korean dubbings, too, and though all three use the same backing music the composition for each is much different, with the Korean basically being like "I GO TO SCHOOL BY DAY AND KICK ASS BY NIGHT AND NO ONE'S GONNA STOP ME" and the French being like "The ladybug is my lucky charm! it's magic!", the English is basically like "I'M A GIRL OH MY GOD SUPER CUTE SUPER FUN FALL IN LOVE I'M A GIRL"), the bleh voice acting (haven't heard enough to go one way or another), and reddit mentioning that the translation into English being suuuuuper awkward ("de-evilizing" instead of "cleansing", for example), the English just sounds like it's going to be a really bad idea. >>;;

adding to my frustration, though, is that there's no reliable way to get either the Korean or French for streaming or torrenting. one group was doing both, but they started taking them down when the English dub started playing....not caring that some people may not have the bandwidth to stream or may not like/understand the English, or have access to it in their country. i'm finding some stuff on youtube, so that looks like my only avenue....though it's gonna be an uphill battle. and for some reason the Korean dub is in muuuch more steady supply than the French. (too bad, i prefer the French opening out of the three because it uses a different animation than the others and is much, MUCH shorter. :0 )
Title: Re: Favorite TV Shows
Post by: Nichi on January 03, 2016, 01:47:25 AM
...my thoughts go to Winx Club, and the goddamn theme song from the 4Kids dub. I never could stand that show, and it didn't help that my sister liked to annoy me with it >_<;
(I heard the Nickelodeon dub was better, but I never cared enough to check it out)

eh, you didn't miss much. like WITCH, it was a pretty forgettable show.

Korean: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ypQda8m-Qsk
French: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zpnSCguHYmQ (full version, tv edit is much shorter and it seems the composition is closer to the English than i thought but it's still a bit better imo, shortented French is here (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oo5P7JmrrPA))
English: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=je-F8Da8oe4

tbh even without this justification they skipped an episode. nuff said in my book. :\

Indeed. Granted, given they're aiming it toward kids, it could be like [pick: beach episode of Sailor Moon \ hot springs episode of Outlaw Star \ the episode of Pokemon where James had tits \ etc]...but, given I know nothing about this show, it could just be laziness \ wanting to jump to a point where it's more marketable (Given the confusing airing order for Cardcaptor Sakura in its English dub; jumping forward to Li's introduction, and then going back and reairing the first 10 or so episodes...while still airing all of the newer stuff, making the plot difficult to follow)
Title: Re: Favorite TV Shows

according to the wiki/articles i've read, the entire series had to be retooled for a slightly younger audience, so there's little to no questionable content. the episode in question sees the male hero/love interest getting an evil clone in the form of a romantic rival given special powers. Ladybug then has to figure out which one's the real one. :0

Going to necrobump this to talk about something: namely, Samurai Jack.

With the show finally getting back off the ground for a 5th season, with the writers set on finally giving the story a proper conclusion, I decided it was finally time to revisit this series that has eluded me for years.

You see, waaaaaaay back in '01, when the show first premiered, I was hyped for it and tuned in for the premiere movie (Which was the first 3 episodes). My sister, being deep into her weaboo phase, absolutely despised this show, solely for its art style; to her, it was "a garbage American cartoon trying to be Japanese"...however, she unironically enjoyed Winx Club. Meanwhile, I fucking loved it; it was stylish and intense...perhaps, too intense, as mom made me change the channel toward the end of the movie, and banned me from ever watching it again.

The reason for this ban was due to it being "too violent". It didn't matter that he was cutting robots in half, it was still too violent, especially when he started to cut those robot-bugs in half in dramatic slow-mo, with oil spewing from them. Sadly, I never got a chance to watch it again...well, it did air in reruns on Toonami back around '07 or so, but at the time, I wasn't really interested in it, since my sister's hate of it had me thinking it wasn't worth going back to. However, with the show's return to Adult Swim with a 5th and final season, currently in progress, I decided it was finally time to go back, back to the past, and see what I missed out on.

I just got past the premiere movie, and I'm honestly loving it so far; my only regret was waiting so long to actually watch it again, but at least I have quite a few episodes to catch up on.
