Title: Favorite OS?
Post by: CanaryTan on February 26, 2011, 11:01:59 PM
(Sorry if a topic like this has been posted before or it is in the wrong section)

Have a favorite operating system? Or do you have a couple favorites?

I'm currently downloading OpenSolaris, I've heard good things from it.
I love Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Xubuntu. Well, every variation on ubuntu and ubuntu itself :D

What about you?

there's a difference between -tan and OS itself. for example, i like Visbou-tan, but i HAAAAATE. vista. and 3.1 is ADOOOORAABLEEE~~ <333 but i've never used 3.1. :\

Windows 95
Windows 98
Windows 2000 (to a point)
Windows XP (i've tried 2/3 versions)
Windows 7

OSes i've nver tried, but would like to:
Ubuntu
Mint
Mac OS9
Windows 3.1
Windows ME
KariOS (aka ChocOS)

I'll just list the ones that I had no problems with as my favourites. x)

Windows 98
Windows 7 (haven't used it much, but the little I did it was nice)
Fedora Core 6
Fedora 8
Linux Mint 10

Anti-favourites (ie with nothing but trouble):
Windows 95
Windows Vista
Fedora 13 & 14 (lumped together as 14 wasn't a clean install but upgrade)

@Krizo: I know this must be a sadistic question, but what's your favorite among all the Mac OSes?  >=D

------

I've also tried Ubuntu. It's good, but it's awfully slow under VirtualBox and that's the only way it runs on my Mac, so I don't use it much. :(

I've never tried Ubuntu. Hmm...

Gentoo is nice, but some of  the people in its core community seem less than pleasant... Ehh...

Oh, SMGL is cool too. And FreeBSD. And DOS!

the only reason i haven't yet tried ubuntu is cause i have nowhere to put it. i have a brochure on it, though, so if i ever switch to linux, i'd probably use that as a bridge into the new world. =w=

That applies to many Linux communities, I feel. Every time one posts about a problem like, "whenever I do this and that, the x server freezes", the first answer is, "I don't have any problem, but I never do that". And that's pretty much the nicest and most helpful answer one gets for a while. >.<

Well, I need to admit too that I've never dared to ask any questions myself: I just trust someone else did and skip all the sarcastic answers. x)
Title: Re: Favorite OS?
Post by: Chocofreak13 on February 28, 2011, 01:09:31 PM
that's my major turnoff with linux as a whole; the majority of the community is a buncha programmers, so naturally some of them would be total asses to people who don't use the command line/know how to program/are new to linux. i'm a little afraid to try it, since i don't know much. the only silver lining is that the majority of the people here either use or have used linux, so i know i'll get a straight, helpful answer. :3
Title: Re: Favorite OS?
Post by: Bella on February 28, 2011, 04:51:01 PM
I have an irrational dislike of the Linux and FOSS communities, mostly based on the actions of a couple of ex-friends/current-asshats. -W-

The community isn't as esoteric as you'd think - in fact, there are a lot of experienced, but non-techhead people involved with Linux -  but there does seem to be a pervasive holier-than-thou attitude, worse even than that of the so-called Mac Evangelists. Ironically, while the Linux/FOSS communities pride themselves on inclusion and user freedom, they aren't exactly the most people-friendly of groups. -.-;;

I used to do a little work in the Ubuntu community back in version 9.?? (Been a while), organized a few package files and put together a wallpaper theme type thing. The community isn't that bad from what I noticed, though there were the people whom got a high and mighty with Linux and such so I don't use Ubuntu that much anymore other than a dual boot back-up if Windows7 is being cranky.

Here is my list:
Windows 95
Windows 2K
Windows 7

Macintosh System 7
Macintosh System 7.5
Mac OSX Snow Leopard (Don't own a Mac that can run this but I still like it for when I get to use it.)

Ubuntu 9.10
Arch Linux

I think he means he has three or four install floppies rather than a single disk image... from before the days they used ISOs to install OSes...

Upon closer inspection, it appears that I only have a VMWare Player image of Windows 95. You could still used it under VirtualBox if you wanna just play with it though... : \

Windows 95 came on about 35 floppies, so I doubt he's referring to that, unless he has an incomplete set.

My bad, I was thinking of my Microsoft Plus! for Windows 95 CD.  I do have a complete 95 floppy set though.  Digging it out of storage would be a pain though, since they were never used.

I'm a little late to this topic, it seems, but I might as well name off a few of my favorites:

- MS-DOS 6.22 (Still my preferred version of DOS; it has all the features I'm used to)
- Windows 2000 (I still proudly use it to this day)
- OS/2 (I've only used it a few times, but I loved it; in fact, I have an OS/2 mousepad on my desk)
- Macintosh System 7.5 (It was the version of MacOS I used when I was first introduced to the Macintosh. Like Windows 95, it brings back fond memories when I use it)

The Disk operating system era sounds very odd.

You literally take your hardrive out of your home computer and carry it around with you.

I can't really see a purpose of doing it anymore, especially with a Laptop.

That's technically not taking your laptop's hardrive out everytime you wanted to go somewhere though Xd

I keep backups of music/art/movies/DMGs on my external as well, but I don't take hardrives out of anything.
Title: Re: Favorite OS?
Post by: Chocofreak13 on March 29, 2011, 11:54:40 PM
my laptop's drive is too small to hold everything. ^^

technically, i DID take these out of a computer....they're desktop drives hooked up to the computer via USB. :3

Yeah, my Dad has one of those USB to SATA things he used on a computer's hardrive that died.

I paid money for my drive instead of doing that (just using a dead computer's hardrive for an external). But it's awesome, because it'll do Firewire 800, Firewire 400 OR USB.

I'm considering buying an HDD toaster next, that way I can just use normal HDDs for my backups instead of having to buy a new external HD every year or two... .w.

All the movie/video files, music, VMs and highres digital photographs are taking a toll on my diskspace... in a year and a half, I've used 350gb on my iMac's 640gb HDD.

I have a 500gb backup disk, but that's already been filled because I use Time Machine as a backup utility... I think the farthest it reaches back now is October.

In the post desktop thread, it can be seen I use less than 13% of my Hardrive.

All my files put together are about 60 GB or so.

I've also never seen my ram go above 50% usage.

Title: Re: Favorite OS?
Post by: svx on March 31, 2011, 04:41:13 AM
My favorite OS is... ehh...

Let's see here...

Eh, Linux? I'd have to say that I've had my best experiences with Linux, and not too many bad experiences
It's what I'm most familiar with though... I guess I've had bad experiences with it too, but not many...

I'd take (MS- / any similar)DOS as my second favorite.
That's what I'd probably say without thinking about it, but DOS isn't really that useful...
It's great for old software and such, sure... Ehh, it's... Fun and straightforward to develop programs for it too...
But the only realistic appeal of it to me anymore is that nostalgia :p

So, my second favorite would be Windows CE.
Oddly.
CE 6, that is...
I was unfamiliar with it until I got my Zune HD, but now I think it's awesome. It's simple and efficient at what it's meant to do, and I've only ran into a few small things that I hate about it (which is impressive :p)
But Mobile Internet Explorer can go back to the abyss where it belongs.
srsly, it's a mess
Did those guys (the Mobile IE team) learn to program at some random tech college advertising on G4 TV or something? :p

Yeah, Linux... rocks.

Rocks hard.

My disk space situation is just as bad

Disk #1: 500 GB  --  60 MB for boot partition, the rest for Gentoo (109 GB free)
Disk #2: 500 GB  --  496 GB for anime/music, 4 GB for Linux swap space (30 GB free)
Disk #3: 80 GB  --  all for Windows 7 (cringing... < 1 GB free)
Disk #4: 80 GB  --  all for Sabayon (26 GB free)

In total, 257 GB of anime on disk #1 (along with Gentoo), and 237 GB of anime on disk #2
Only 64 GB of music...  I ams a lightweight :p

Meeeeh, I don't really have much music, I'm very picky.

System breakdowns?
I keep mine pretty in check, so I can almost name how much (X) uses off the top of my head.

My garageband add-ons use roughly 30 gigs.
Megas XLR is about 7 gigs.
STO is about 9 gigs.
itunes is roughly 1 gig, as stated.

That alone puts me down to 10.65 gigs, which doesn't include all the other programs I've downloaded and added on. (ex; Nanosaur@200 megs, Webkit@150 megs, Pixelmator@100 megs, iwork@400 megs, etc). Or personal files.

I like how garageband add ons are roughly half my used space :P

Going by my iPod, I have about five gigs of music.... and I'm extremely choosy.

Am I the only person who doesn't use mass amounts of hard disk space?  Or RAM?  Or anything.....

My entire personal folder is 24 Gb. ._. It "helped" a lot that all my anime disappeared somewhere around New Year's (I swear it was rigged, it vanished also from my backup). -.-; Even with those though, I think only about 120 Gb would've been needed I guess. I don't watch many movies or especially tv series, nor do I collect music, so not much to store apart from anime...

Yeahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. >________>

MAC OSX 10.6 IS THE GREATEST OS THAT I WILL EVER USE, AT LEAST UNTIL I CAN GET MY EMULATED MULTICS SYSTEM. <3

No, really though, the greatest OS I've ever used is probably OpenVMS. Even if the extent of my usage was mostly poking around the system and playing lots and lots of classic ASCII games.

CTSS too, if you consider its historic importance...

Some others I like that I didn't mention last time:

- Windows for Workgroups 3.11 (If I have a need for 16-bit Windows, I go with this version; it's easily the best one)

- Ubuntu (Compared to the mess that was the other version of Linux I tried (RedHat 5.2), Ubuntu was quite nice; if I have a need for Linux, I go to it first)

- Windows 95 (I used this version of Windows for years; it held the position of my favorite version overall until I finally gave Windows 2000 a fair chance)

While at work today, I saw something that put a smile on my face; they still have a PC running Windows 2000. This was a surprise; seeing as every other PC in that building runs on XP...although, there's supposedly one hidden in the basement that's running OS/2, but nobody has been able to prove what OS it's running.

I once heard a tale of a VAX running VMS that was closed up behind a wall in an office building, and discovered like five years later.... still running....

My favourite desktop OS is still Mac OSX 10.6
And my favourite...
Linux distro is Mint
Historic OS is Multics
"Timeless" OS is OpenVMS

I got a Kaypro from the college tech department.  That gives me hope the PDP-11 or maybe the VAXen are still around here somewhere.
