Title: Windows 7
Post by: Red-Machine on July 11, 2009, 07:54:50 AM
Has anyone else here tried Windows 7?  I've been messing around with it recently and wanted to discuss my feelings on it.

Well, first off, I think they did a good job with the installer.  Very easy to use, especially for less techno-savvy people.

Though, I was expecting a bit more than a revised taskbar and DirectX 11.  It still uses NTFS, when we were promised WFS for Vista.  They say it is a minor update to Windows Vista, but Windows Vista was only supposed to be "an interrim build between XP and the next OS".  Okay, so we're getting a minor update to an interrim build?  That's about as pointless as 98SE and the 95 OSRs, and at least you could buy 98SE.

I don't think 7 qualifies as a new OS, they should just call it Vista SE or Vista OSR1.  I'd probably still stick with Vista anyway unless they offered it as a free update (why the HELL didn't they do that for the 95 OSR's!?!?).

Discuss.

Actually... I think Vista had way too many new features to even be considered an interim to XP. I actually consider it a full new OS.

Seven however, is as they are calling it out to be... a minor update. They just seemingly wanted to stabilize on what Vista had done... except they don't wanted the name tied to it... thus seven. The only real upgrade was the taskbar, the "ribbonized" GUI of Wordpad and the added functions to the calculator. Anything else was pretty much optimized from Vista or added in a sort of gimmicky manner. Yet, the best feature of all is the actual fix to the UAC... which had become the annoyance to everything that is user firendly.

I still recommend it to people though... even though it's just "Vista done right". At least peeps won't be questioned about doing every single thing. lol

Well, personally, I'm sticking with Vista.  There are several features I HATE about 7.  Such as the new Windows Media Player.  It seems that they are going back to the old standard of having everything seperate.  You watch a video, and it will appear in a seperate window; I don't want that, I want everything intergrated.  I also prefer Vista's GUI better; I like it when things are rounded, not squared.

The words in bold being the key words. I still can't manage to wrap my mind around how much Windows 7 is faster than Vista...

And, btw, am I the only one who's pretty much addicted to Aero Snap and Aero Peek by now?
Title: Windows 7
Post by: Red-Machine on July 13, 2009, 09:04:32 AM
Aero Peek is good, but I've not really got much experience with Snap.  If any of my windows aren't maximised, I usuall place them in different areas depending on what they are.  i.e. instant messengers get placed in the far right, documents in the middle and music players at the bottom.

Hay guise, Win7 RTM release get. >:3

I'll be installing it on LAMBDA once a good crack gets up.

Anyways, my constant dualscreen abuse makes me so used to not having to do much space-management at all, just put things wherever I want them -w-;

Post by: Kiso on July 13, 2009, 10:34:04 PM
AS expected of multi-screen users! I think. lol

I mean... I used to do that when I had my laptop and an extra screen... now I can't 'cause my laptop died an honorable death and I have to use my old compy now. ^^;

Anyways... what is this Aero Snap thing again? Was it that thing that arranged two windows side-by-side on the monitors when you bring one to a corner? Anyways, I like dragging my window out of fulls creen... I actually do it out of whim and to amuse myself when I don't feel like playing Chess Titans (at last they are actually adding real games... unlike that Purble Place crud... kinda' missing Pinball though).

I just don't like to concentrate on too manything as of late... back in the day I could deal with many open windows and chat in four separate programs... as well as RP, use Photoshop... and sometimes play MMO's. lol I was a multitasking freak. I want to do that again with 7... just to see how much of it can it handle. lol

And as I've got DELTA up functioning again as well, I've gota total of 4 simultaneously active screens in my room...my desktop is damn buried _W_;

If you mean the OS... definitely! I think it's even better than XP.

However, Windows 7 ain't free. Well... technically, it is... until spring of next year or so. however you can get it under the table... if you know what I mean. >_^

If you live in USA, France, UK or Germany, you can pre-order it for 50 bucks (Home) or 100 bucks (Professional). There will be similar prices for college students and the like... EU users get to buy the full version at upgrade price until December, too. There's also a Home Premium family pack with 3 licenses at 129$...

It's not free, that's true, but it's definitely one of the cheapest OS's MS has ever made.

damn...heard a rumor (actually, i think i heard it on tv) that they were giving it out for free till about october.
i'm not gonna pey, so never mind. i'm stuck on xp, all future versions leave a bad taste in my mouth thanks to vista.

Please... nothing really comes free from a company that stands to make money out of their products. As for the Vista bad taste... forget about it cause Win7 basically blows Vista out of the water and pretty much owns XP.

In my case, I am actually waiting to buy my new laptop until after they release the OS. Although I have no problems with Vista myself... I like new stuff on my systems.

We're only allowed to pay upgrade prices because there IS NO UPGRADE VERSION IN EUROPE.  M$ got sued by the EU for abusing their monopoly on internet browsers and media players, so all future versions of Windows sold in Europe will come without IE or WMP.  This means that we will not be allowed to upgrade older versions that have it installed, so I guess M$ felt sorry for us and offered it at the lower price.

The EU ruling is stupid. So how do you get your non-IE browser when you have no browser to download it... LOL

FTP, removeable media, Windows Update.  There ware many ways.

Windows Update? So it ends up that you may have to download IE just to download another browser... which is even more stupid LOL

I know there are ways to get a browser without a browser, but it can be quite clumsy, especially for a new PC. I simply think browser is a MUST for modern-day OS.

My uncle has Windows 7 on his main computer and says that it's way better than Vista and is what Vista should have been in the first place. He showed me how to use it and I think it's good too!

I especially like the new taskbar and how your windows are organized though if you have a lot of minimized windows in one program, it can be tedious sifting through the window you want to access.

If he has an Aero-capable machine, you have window preview thumbnails right on the window selection screen, and hovering over a thumbnail lets you have an actual-sized preview of the window (Aero Peek). You can also go for Alt+Tab which works in the same manner as Aero Peek if you have Aero active, but this one has all the windows ordered chronologically according to when you last used them.

I recommend going through thumbnails though, it's the more user-friendlier one.

I think it's legal to torrent the RC (correct me if I'm wrong). Microsoft still gives away keys to activate it, and it should last  at least until January 2010.

The closest thing to a trial is the Windows 7 Release Candidate (which I am running). You can download it for free and you have until spring of spring of next year before you need to buy it. If I had the money (and the credit card), I would have already pre-ordered an upgrade of the OS for my desktop, and later look for a Laptop with 7-ultimate installed (which is not going to be easy). That's as much as they will give for now... the OS isn't even released yet.

Anyways, if you want to try it, here's the link: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-7/download.aspx
I recommend backing up all your data before even installing... or better yet, install on a separate (and unuused) HDD.

Oh, and don't get scared by the RC thing... the OS works perfectly good.

Yes, it's legal to distribute (although it's not recommended *cough*hackerstuff*cough*), at least until they stop giving away RC keys, which I think end in August... so people better get their keys on time before they get left out of trying it out for free.

Using Win7 in a dual-boot configuration on my Lenovo T60 laptop.  Works really well, even with all the eyecandy turned on.

Every once in a while I get a little stutter on the video, but almost none.  Vista absolutely murdered this same machine.

of course, the Ubuntu side works flawlessly, but that's no surprise there.

After I get my laptop and desktops set up (cleaning and organizing files on hard drives mostly), nana-chan is going to move in a fresh new hard drive. :3 (well, I don't have vista, so I need to do a fresh install anyway)

IT'S TIME.

I'll most likely be keeping XP-chan on-drive, as a failsafe, but I am currently DL'ing the RTM x64 Ultimate release. Activation cracks are a go and found and such, and we'll see how easy that will be - but by the morrow DELTA should wielding a brand new Nana-chan install.

...maybe I should wish for a new HDD for my bday -w-;

Maybe its because i basicly skipped vista after 6 months of torment, but as a hard core xp user( now using 7) it has been a dramatic change. The main changes are:
* fast boot time
*Better Aero
*The toolbar is orgasmic
*it not really demanding

The only thing I dant like about 7 is that is scales my games. So far its the best Windows OS next to XP.

A lot of XP users are going to be annoyed when they try to use a Win7 upgrade DVD on their XP machine. It'll give a nice warning stating that you can't upgrade and need to clean install. Also, only Professional, Enterprise and Ultimate can use XP Compatibility. (Home Premium and Home Basic do not have it, unlike in Vista.)

Hey, hey!
The RTM may not be the final version, but technically no version is until they stop providing updates. Updates work fine and well, too - no fuss from WinUpdate here.
Just the slight discomfort of things not working as you're used to with the new OS, but hey, that's what EXP is for, men.

Win 7 is Vista with less compatability Issues.

I like seven, but I hate one thing about it.  There is no up folder button, and when I can't find it I feel stupid, and I waste an hour trying to realize its not there.

I won't use WMP only because of constant nagging of updates for codecs.  Therefore VLC is my player, and the new interface for 1.0.1 is awesome.  The only other thing I don't like about it is the sudden jump from min. RAM of 128 = XP to 1GB =Vista/7.  I'm a poor college student so budget limits me to 512MB.  T_T

Makes Fallout 1 fly now lol.

I don't use Media Player Classic because i'll be frank I don't like it.  VLC suits my tastes just a little more.  Besides, VLC makes it simple to stream video across networks.  Also makes it easy to force people to watch meatspin while their computer is shutting down, in the background.

And going up in a folder is the same as typing in cd .. in dos.
Or for GUI only users, means going to the parent folder of the child folder you're currently in.

My friend has this.  I can't stand it.  I like OS-tan, but that just gets annoying.  Another thing I can't stand is the jiggle.  Call me OCD but it's just a stretch of the image.  Real ones jiggle as two seperate objects.  Not as the connector in the middle of a bra.  Therefore I have come to the conclusion that she actually has a uniboob.

What do you suggest then???
The only way I can figure it is her bra got caught on the toolbar and it snapped, but I don't think she would be too happy unless she's a S&M nympho.
