Hello people!

I've created a cute OS-TAN Collections TAN candidate and I hope that you can enjoy her and choose her as our official TAN.

Profession = Dancer/Student

Height = 1,61 meters / 5,28 feet

Vote her if you want her as official site TAN and raise a pool to name her...

Info so far planned:
Somesort of geek, but not the stereotypical Hikikomori.
More like the home version of a rocket scientist, the type that knows Pi by 30 decimals or so. You get the point.
She got some thick framed glasses to make the geekyness even more obvious. Also some freckles on the nose bridge and bit on the cheeks.
She likes to collect old fountain pens, which she keeps a couple of in her jacket pocket. Pens are important!
Dont know about age, but I'd say somewhere in the mid/late teens maybe? Still student maybe?
But she would be working at evenings/weekends/other time in a nearby Library/antiquary.
Lives in a small appartment that's full of all kind of books, halfmade projects of different kinds. And one hueg metallic archiving drawer that contains all the images uploaded to OSC. Also one old bookshelf made out of dark Oakwood that has the complete Ostan wiki books bound into old leather covers.

She is bound to exact time manners, as in. at 5pm she likes to enjoy a cup of tea with a croissant (she lieks them).

The idea behind this character would be that she would be multitalented, as this forum has lots of people of different talents.

So.. yeah.

Mainstay meganekko. Pretty normal type thar.

She would also be prone to losing control over herself and going all batshit insane crazy on random things...

if i'm to pick from the 2, i personally like vondaab's better, no offense. i've always had a soft spot for girls with glasses (i am one, and i find them attractive as well >:] ) and honestly, she seems to be a bit more like most of us here <D (i have small bone structure, but i be horrible dancer. ;_; )

shouldn't this be in the OS-tan thread?

and i think everyone should try to submit before we vote. i was thinking last week about making a site-tan, but then my sick took a turn for the worse ;_;

I like color scheme of Rafaelle's design and it is very nicely drawn but lacks the geekiness that an OSC-tan would need. Sadly, 'elegant' is not one of the things that comes into mind for an OSC-tan!

VonDaab's design is adorable and closer to what I imagined an OSC-tan would be like, especially the geek factor and that she's a computer historian!

And of course the crazy personality as suggested by Nejin!

If I were to draw an OSC-tan, she'd resemble VonDaab's design but with the color scheme from Rafaelle's design and her outfit modified for a more offbeat look.

Well, my target was to make a character that symbolizes the ORIGINAL purposes of this forum. Discussion about Os-tans, creating -tans and collecting information about them. NOT random off topicness and 4chan meme spouting.

Ditto, if the OSC-tan were to be true to the current tone of this forum (rather than the actual function), she would just be some Colors-tan looking character repeatedly ramming her head into a wall :P.

Yes I'm a hypocrite, so hate me.  I'll weigh in on which design I like once all the artists who plan to contribute have done so.  I feel if I say anything now, it might lead some artists into borrowing certain ideas or modeling towards a certain ideal and possibly causing a wee bit of homogeneity leading to monotony.  I'm actually hoping for some natural evolution to kick in here and see some inspired developments.  So yeah, definitely watching this thread...

I might throw my hat into the ring.. I was thinking about this before. Tho I plan to make her look more like a hikkimori otaku girl, in like pajamas/sweats with shelves of manga anime and figures, prolly with an affinity for writting fanfics and suff

The purpose of a representative TAN is to make (infacts) to represent the site and attract new users, and make other sites being ENVIOUS of our pretty TAN, and yours is the typical "absolutely not attractive" geek girl with bottle-bottom-sized glass lenses...

Definitevly a no-no...

I know you can make better attractive girls, maybe equipped with rabbit ears.

Actually the purpose of a represenitive tan is to have a tan that represents the sites purpose/intent/personality.  A tan is not an advertising object, its a visual representation of whatever it represents.

In this case, the OSC forums/site was designed to collect anything and everything related to the tans as well as contribute to the fandom with our own creations of fanfics, comics, images, tans, etc.  It is populated by gamers, artists, and otaku.

Von Daabs design, and what I was intending aims for this. Add a file folder over flowing with images to that girl or something of the like and your headed in the right direction.

However, a dancer... I really fail to see how that represents us in any way. I cant exactly say we are elegant or graceful around here, and most of us probobly spend more time online, watching anime, playing games, etc then we do getting up and doing physical activity. Basicly, as cute as the dance design is, it fails to capture the personality/essance of the forums.  

Anyhow, I echo the call for a contest/competition etc for forum members to produce designs for a possible OSC-tan. Ill likely pick up my pencil for it. Being the most senior member still posting on the forums today and an artist I feel obligated to try and make a tan that captures the sites personality.

However, I also think there should also be some collabaration in this endevor rather then a my design vs your design sort of thing.  For insntance, we all create some designs, from those designs members can say what aspects they like or dislike. Then we start round two where members improve upon or modify their designs to better capture these aspects and so on.

More like this should be a sandbox for open ideas and experimenting.
I dont find competing any fun. I'm here just to toss ideas into the box and see what the result is.

Because she is crazy and enjoys life... She is a student but she decided to became a dancer...

She dances because she enjoys living and because she like music and being in movement...

She represents the joy of life that represents us all whoever any of us could be...

It is not important being geeks or not, artists or untalented people, men or women, young or elder people.

The important is being ALIVE...

And I noted that many of readers here on OSTAN site just prefer to stay at a window and see the life outside their room...

There are readers who enjoy tans for lulz, readers who look at TANS beacuse they are pretty and people who look at TANS as beautiful unreal girls because they not sensed that real life is beautiful-  

I hope that my OS-TAN sketch girl could be choosen as site representative as she is a little (but serious) attempt to indicate people to enjoy life and let them decide to being awake, stay active and get the courage and the power to change things in real world...

A geek girl with enormous lens glasses is not the best that you can draw.

Exit the normal routine...

Make the girl out of the normal schemes and make her again suitable for represent OSTAN Site, even if at a very first sight she could not being considered fitting our community stereotypes...

Try more ideas... Fore example your design is good but try to making her a pretty young girl BUT again geeky with glasses.

I mean... try to draw again the first sketch but give her a different age...

This will lead to a new different aspect and lead to new ideas!

The one you drawn is too elder to wear glasses. At that age girls prefer far better to choose for contact lenses...

And girls prefer to hide that they are geeky to avoid being excluded in groups of people...

Lawl, so my sketch is done nao. I spent 30 minutes asking myself and my drawing skills "HOW DID I DRAWED BREASTS?" and finally settled on the fact that it's better that it looks feminine than not (seeing as I can't emphasize that well without them, lawl).

No offence, but I still fail to see how that has anything whatsoever to do with the forum. This isnt a forum dedicated to the enjoyment of life, its a forum dedicated to net created anime characters, characters related to computers and only geeks and otaku can truely appriciate them.

Oh and I happen to like my glasses and take pride in my geekiness.  If people cant handle my geekatude they aren't they type of people I want to assiciate myself with anyways.  When I make my brief peek out my window at life every day (before quickly returning to the darkness where my computer sits) I see people young and old wearing glasses, I hardly think that glasses are only for the young.

Anyhow, Im with vondaab about the sandboxing thing.  I suppose thats more what i was intending anyhow, collaborative works rather then everyone compeating to get their idea picked.

BWAHAHAHA! That "Internet Party" video was hilarious with each of the websites' personalities being spot-on! (the extremely geeky and weird Cracked guy had to be my favorite of the cast!) :D But it was missing characters to represent Fark, Slashdot, 4chan and Encyclopedia Dramatica!  :(

I wear glasses too and I'm a proud geek! And to those that don't like it, well that just too bad! Pride in geekiness!

A collaboration effort would be better in the spirit of OSC anyways. I'll try to contribute something.

Hey, 4chan was there...I remember...or maybe that was in the "Internet Intervention" one, but there sure was a 4chan. And some. I dunno.
Also, rectangular glasses gives you a +4 INT attribute bonus. Round ones gives +10 MOE points, and square ones make you able to choose the "Class Representative" prestige class...

This took a while, but here's my contribution.

Took a glance at VDB's version, added Ahoge-horn of supreme doom, removed glasses, added slack clothing. Then I added zippers, made them slightly less slacky, busted her up and gave her...a mouse.

Because that's one of the two things we use the most around here, lawl.

Glasses are nowadays an item of style... i would imagine a person from the  styliest country in europe (italy) to recognize that...
Only thing is though that thick glasses are out... I have a -4,-4 perscription and the lenses in my glasses are about 4mm thick...

So the glasses can stay as far as i'm concerned...

And, ooh... toss in a necktie... girls look so much better in a necktie... ^_^ Shirt (as one you'd wear under a tux) with some sort of blouse to make it casual and then a necktie to top it off...... ;010

Well the Von Daab design makes me feel strange because in these days there was a VERY VERY GEEK GIRL, named Arisa who won the Italian Music National Festival and sure she is the not the ugliest girl I ever seen, but she makes very few to change her look... And perhaps for a curious point of view the first Von Daab design matches her in a certain way...

4 is one of the better ones, i put some thought into her.
she wears a kimono (japanese element of the os-tans), but has blonde hair (most of us are of european desent, (sp?) and the site itself is hosted in france)
her hairstyle is based off nejin's. xD
and the kimono is a golden color w/ blue-green obi (based off the kimono i'm making right now)

I'm not really sure how much server space OSC requires, but I think it is some. Not that I'd really decide it by that.

#1 is pretty much made from the same Geek basis thats been discussed here?

From all we've said here it seems the geekish persona is the most popular for the OSC-tan, rite?

She wears a jacket like in Nejin's design but her jacket has a seifuku collar to it. I really liked the floppy disk motif on VonDaab's schoolgirl design so I added that in. I tried to give her sort of a funky + geek-chic look to her design.

Personality-wise, I think OSC-tan is hyper and prone to randomness but is very geeky. She is highly knowledgeable about computers from repairing them to knowing a lot about computer history. She's also an OS-tan historian and anthropologist, keeping several volumes of information related to the OS-tans.

So, I never got around to drawing that yesterday...this morning...whatever. So I did it now instead. As I was randomly browsing around for shit I also found something really useful: 50 Expressions (http://piro.sakura.ne.jp/pics/mon/50expressions.jpg). Pretty useful for a not-quite-expert-level sketcher like myself (i finally stopped doing those huegass stupid-looking eyes. Man.) if you're looking for something to use as reference material.

Anyway, the Osc floppy is a damn sure-kill technique, so I copypaste'd. (not really but yeah). And I was too lazy to draw her legs so I hid them under a table. Which I hid under a tablecloth. On Randomness, I'd like you to remember that an OSC-tan should be created with the state of our site in mind...

Seeing as the amount of material and posts dedicated to what's actually this site's main purpose (the monitoring, creation and discussion about OS-Tans and such), is dwarfed so much out of proportion by things dedicated to entirely different things, be they on-topic in their respective thread or not, she definitely deserves some sort of randomness trait. It might not be the flippy-yippe-OT-time kind of randomness (not only that, at least) but something in that direction - for example, a habit to doze off and/or getting easily distracted.

This is on topic, we're discussing what should or should not be a part of the design, and while I do think the idea is cute, I don't think it represents the forum.  Instead it makes things appear as if we're another of those 4chan knockoff boards, and as OT as we get here, I don't think that's the case.  On the other hand, this board has evolved beyond the realm of OS-tans and yes even those topics find a way to go OT, so I think it's difficult to avoid incorporating those ideas altogether.  I just think it's important to keep in mind, we are OSC... not something else.

Now obviously there are some problems here.  First, and most importantly, what the hell does this have to do with OSC?  Admittedly, very little, I just wanted to draw a -tan in a schoolgirl uniform.  Second, like my other drawings, this one is unfinished in a number of ways because I'm lazy.  So this is largely drawing off of my comment from earlier likening an OSC-tan based off of the randomness to a -tan just repeatedly ramming her head into a wall.  Then, Smokey just had to make the comment about ADD to which Nej replied "What man in his right mind gives his creation a mental disorder?", it was a question that just begged for an answer... so I gave it :P.  It's bad, I know -__-;.

But do not forget the fact that in non-christian cultures, the cross it is just a sort of jewel design as any other...

And sometimes the cross could be a very elegant element of dressing...

I should probably point out there are different styles of crosses as well, and there are particular styles one can easily identify as religious symbols.  My own knowledge consists of Celtic Crosses, Iron Crosses, Latin Crosses, Inverted Latin Crosses, Greek Crosses, Ankhs, St. Anthony's Crosses, High Crosses, St. Andrew's Crosses, Maltese Crosses, Sun Crosses, Calvary Crosses, Patriarchal Crosses, and Crucifixes.  Typically the symbol most associated with Christianity is the Latin Cross - the same style of cross upon which their messiah was crucified.  It is so much a symbol associated with the religion that the Inverted Latin Cross is instantly associated with Satanism or some other evil, despite the fact that Peter, another religious figure from the Bible, was crucified on such a cross.  While each of these crosses are pretty much somehow related to religion (mainly Catholicism), the Greek Cross (more or less the style Misato wears) isn't so readily associated with religion.

In any case, I do not really understand why the -tan should be young but meh...

Can I be pointed to the right directions as to what has been done for THE OSC mascot character?

Well, there are four pages of designs if you haven't already checked them out, but if you're asking if anything has been settled on, the answer is no, at least, not yet.  What's really cool about this is we've had submissions from numerous people, some who, as far as I know, haven't posted art anywhere else on this forum.  So it seems this topic has been a real shot in the arm in terms of forum involvement.  Sadly, we still have yet to see a submission from Capt-sama (though she has announced her intentions to do so) or Toki (who has probably had trouble getting internet access again, so who knows if she'll get her chance).  Anyway, I'm looking forward to the progress in this forum, so if you'd like to submit a design, dive right in.  Since we haven't really settled on any aspects of the design, feel free to do whatever (as long as you can relate it to OSC).

on the topic of the cross, i like crosses and churches, not for the religious aspect, but for the archetecture and design.

raffaele, i love the combo design you did, so pretty! <D and the os tan/kun idea is brilliant. :3

I plan to develop also the mixed character Marie-Christine because it is interesting, but I also think that the characters who have the maximum growth potential are Chrissie and OSTAN+OSKUN.

Well, I think the general consensus is that we would like designs from every artist in the forum, so we might be waiting awhile.  I highly doubt that we'll be arriving at any decision regarding the design anytime soon.

Senior member ka.... Does that mean people should call me sempai? Thats weird. Most people are senior to me because they are taller than me. The only person I wont give up shot gun to is my 15-year-old brother although he's almost a foot taller than me now.

Wow... you're still working on this OSC mascot? I thought you might have chosen one by now. I went through some pages and saw some interesting and fitting designs, including that girlie with the pink hair.

Well... if people seems like wanting to wait for others to post their ideas... I guess we can go for it. But rather than a competition, couldn't t be some other way?

I mean, we can use the things that are similar between most/all of the characters as the "common standard" (is that even a term?) for the final character. At least then we could call it... the uberOSCmascotCHARACTERofTHEpeople'sPWNINGideas... lol

Well, that seems to be the idea many of us are going for (Nej, Choco, myself, and others), but I don't think it's an idea that has found unanimous approval.  Still the reason why I'd like to wait is so we can get concepts from everyone, so we can each be a part of this in some capacity.  Other than preventing death/OT, I don't see why there's such a rush to finish this, but I have noticed we have numerous designs so perhaps we should consider moving forward.

Well... that is the best form of community sense in my opinion.

I was drawing one... but I kind of erased it to write and then erase and then draw some more... I feel useless. Let me see if I can get something up before Monday... that ought to help raise motivation... I think.

the point of this is, 1. i feel sick and i feel the need to tell you in hopes of head pats saying "there, there, just go sleep it off" and 2. saying that i have my tablet and cg back up and running (worked all day on a .gif, then come to fine out they'll only accept that .jpg i got a few days ago >__> ) so perhaps i should spend my school vacation coming up with yet another submission. :\

I think Raffaele is referring to making either a forum thread or maybe even a new forum section dedicated to oekaki.

Oh, and sorry guys for not having brought up a character design in time... I was kind of busy... with finals coming soon and all that. But somehow I actually managed to do another 7-tan concept along the way... shows for my inability to focus on one thing at a time. --__--;

Well, yeah...
I was hoping for a real oekaki applet. I dont really like to use oekaki in other places because they're usually trolled, spammed, or, they got some weird cencoring policy.

The oekaki idea sounds awesome, but wouldn't it be a great burden on resources?  As VonDaab also pointed out, we'd need someone who'd have time to code it (both of our admins seem pretty busy at the moment) and it would also be bait for trolls, spammers, etc.

i'm agreeing with kiso on this one; i think she means a collaborative.
