It's a favorite of mine from this batch, too!

I forgot one. IAS-tan (cat mode) deciding that Whirlwind-chan is a part of the IAS litter... inspired by a comment about the Whirlwind computer being "kidnapped" into the IAS family (often named as such by computer historians despite there existing only a loose link between them)

Good, keep doing this!  CoCo and TRS-DOS are also lovely.

CoCo and TS-DOS is an oldie but a favorite of mine.

Ask and you shall receive ...

Hockey rivalry Unix and SAGE-sama

Live SAGE-tan reaction to Whirlwind-hime being brought back to life, also Multics and CTSS-tan being back too, and GENIAC-chan and Apple ///-tan being around despite everything. Ft. my realization that IAS-hime, WWMMCS-tan and ORDVAC-tan are Washingtonian, Virginian and Marylander respectively, and Whirlwind realizing her daughter is a bit of an (m)asshole.

Whirlwind-hime passing the baton light-gun to SAGE-chan

Very much a WIP, but some period-accurate OS-tan sketches I would like to render and turn into physical merch at some point.

1950s: Whirlwind and IAS-tan

(Might rework Whirlwind's face posing and hairstyle)

1960s: PDP-8 and LINC-tan

1970s: Multics and Unix-tan

(I'm trying to do a Gunne Sax/70s Victorian Revival look for Multics-sama. I'm not very happy with the periodicity of Unix-sama's attire and will probably be overhauling...)

Last but not least, a little story I wrote about Whirlwind & VMS-tan meeting in the present day:
QuoteSince coming back, Whirlwind-tan's days have been largely occupied by reading. She'd been gone for so long, and was voracious for the knowledge of everything she'd missed. The diaspora of computers from their institutional walled gardens into the fabric of human society; the rise and fall of her descendants' dynasty; the development of computers smaller, nimbler and more numerous than she could have envisioned. Each revelation made her head swim and heart ache with bittersweetness. Often, her caretakers had to remind her to take time to eat and drink and rest, her single minded attention to her task the same as it had been as a youngster. Other than the fifty year gap in her memory, only the creakiness in her limbs indicated anything had changed.

It was from one of these sessions that Whirlwind-tan was jarred to attention by a knock at the door. Setting her book aside, she rose from her wingback chair and sauntered to the entrance. Not a salesman, she thought, looking at the blue-and-gray haired woman on the other side, dressed all in black, sharp features prominent in the warp of the peephole.

She opened the door, and the blue-haired woman jumped ever so slightly.

"It's an honor to meet you," she said, bowing deeply. When she straightened, there was a flustered look on her face, a nervous quaver in her voice. "You don't know me, but my name is VMS. I represent the DEC clan."

Whirlwind's heart beat quicker when she said those words. She waved her forward. "By all means, come in!

" — Can I get yah anything? Tea? Caffee?"

"I wouldn't want to inconvenience you," VMS said, stiff-shouldered as she regarded the parlor.

"Please take a seat, deah," Whirlwind smiled, lifting the carafe off the warmer and two mugs from the counter. "I was refillin' my drink anyway, s'no trouble."

"I'm here because —" she cleared her throat. "I'm sorry, I'm not like this usually. This is just, kind of surreal for me."

"Us both," Whirlwind replied dryly. "I'm more suhprised than any to not be dead. Cream? Sugah?"

VMS-tan shook her head. "Black, please."

It wasn't hard to tell which drink belonged to whom, the ink-dark brew standing in contrast to the milky concoction on the coffee table. VMS picked hers up, and downed several large gulps. Stared at Whirlwind, and blinked, and gulped a few more.

Whirlwind picked hers up too. As amusing as she found the younger -tan's star-strickenness, a lump of emotion welled in her throat. One of her grandchildren, one she didn't even realize she had, sitting with her right now! Quietly she studied the lines of her face and her scars, and a flicker of recognition stirred inside her. She took a long sip.

"I have a delivery for you," VMS finally said, producing an envelope from her vest. Whirlwind placed her mug down and opened up the card, emblazoned with DEC FAMILY REUNION —

"All of us get together every year," VMS explained, "I know you haven't been able to before, but we would love it if you could join us from now on . . ."

"Oh — !" she smiled and dabbed at the corners of her eyes. "Of course! It would mean the world to me!"

"It would mean the world to us, too," VMS smiled. "Thank you, Whirlwind-sama."

Quote from: Goujer on June 01, 2025, 06:19:09 PMSO TRUE, Touko made more sense as a Windows-tan than this weird sassy child we seem to have for 11.
At least with Touko the trend was making her a psycho yandere.
I still have mixed feelings about official OS-tans but I did warm up to Touko working on this. I don't know much about her personality tho so I'm delighted to hear this.

Quote from: stewartsage on June 01, 2025, 08:20:42 PMSo we need to work on a Windows 11 then.  Or someone does, that's about fifty years too advanced for my field lol

Honestly ... I would be game if I had ideas. Most of what I know about Windows 11 centers on tightened security, reduced user customization, recording everything the user does, and AI integration, which I feel like you could spin into OS-tan design concepts. (Right off the bat I see her as a dominant and surveilling type. Yandere anyone?) I don't know I want to give myself a headache figuring out how generative AI maps into OS-tan terms though.

I wouldn't mind taking a stab at post-Mavericks Mac OS X releases. I feel a bit bad saying it but a lot of the newer OS X releases have run together in my mind. I've thought making one encompassing Mac OS X-tan to cover the ARM releases, though I realize that's very against tradition.

Is that what we're calling it now? 🤔🤨

Quote from: Bella on May 29, 2025, 12:06:51 PMThanks!

Is there a consensus on a Windows 11-tan design? I've seen a few around, but I'm wary of using the designs of non-OSC-originating "fanon" OS-tans. Unfortunately I expect to run into the same problem with post-Lion Mac OS X-tans, as I don't believe any of them have widely adopted -tans - if they have -tans at all. T_T

So we need to work on a Windows 11 then.  Or someone does, that's about fifty years too advanced for my field lol

Quote from: Bella on June 01, 2025, 04:12:15 PMYeah, I've seen that design around on pixiv as well and know what you mean. :/

Sketchy depictions aside, I don't get the design language of her as recent Windows-tans tend to trend ... big so to speak, and nothing I know about Windows 11 suggests small/simple (as is the case with the DOSes, early Windows, early microcomputers etc. -tans who tend to be small and child-like physically).

SO TRUE, Touko made more sense as a Windows-tan than this weird sassy child we seem to have for 11.
