@Leaf: Very nice. I haven't played it before, but I've heard it's good :3

@Bella: *hug*
I'm sure you'll get to see him again soon enough...and maybe if things fall into place, you'll get to see me again, except I'll be living closer by ^^

What the f$#* is Touhou? I can't find a consistant definition anywhere and it feels like I'm missing out on something.

Touhou is like nothing you've ever seen...

Got accepted to U of Pitt: Bradford today, feeling pretty good about that along with the $10K scholarship that I got bringing the total cost of going down to around $5k which is nice~

Still waiting to hear from John Carroll and Ohio U like I had noted in an earlier post, I also got mail from U of Southern Cali, Michigan, and Stanford trying to recruit me. Southern Cali is pretty mad because I decided not to apply but ended up sending a couple letters of recommendation and my SAT scores, I told them I wasn't interested since its way outside my price range for college. Same goes for Stanford and Michigan, Michigan really wanted me because of the whole Three-generations deal with my family but even with some aid it would cost around $45K to go and I don't plan on going into dead debt right as I go into college.

Probably going to end up at Bradford at this point because of the cost and my folks want me to stay in state, John Carroll and Ohio U are still top choices though. I still don't know whats in store for my future college at this point, I only know that when I graduate I'm taking a long ass trip to Europe to explore and party before coming back to study.
Congrats!

yeah, USC is damn expensive. I got a scholarship and a grant or two on top of that Jr/Sr year, but I have a crapton of loans to pay off now. Part of the reason I went to USC was because /I/ wanted to stay in the state. haha
Alas.

I kinda find it interesting that many of you guys are east of the mississippi. In most other online communities I take part in, the distribution is way lopsided favoring the west coast.

And another interesting thing I noticed, my uncle took me to the Iberian Peninsula+Morocco right after I graduated. :3 Not quite party-time since it's with family, but that Spanish World Cup win certainly pushed it in that direction in the streets outside my hotel window.

haha, part of the reason why you don't find a constant definition is because Touhou is pretty much defined by fanon.

Long story short, Touhou is originally a series of bullet hell vertical shooter games, created all by one person, named ZUN.

Long story:
The music in these games have spawned a crapton of cover/arrangement albums in as many genres imaginable, from metal to pop to dance to irish folk music. I'm sure you've seen many videos with these. For most, this is what first got people into Touhou.

Additionally, the very sparse storyline in canon have spawned numerous doujinshi and other doujin materials. Filling in details and fleshing out many personalities. The canon story is also often loosely based off of Japanese mythology, giving doujin writers a little more to work off of.

Feel free to ask more questions. It's certainly difficult to get into going off official materials only. You kinda /have/ to immerse yourself in the fanon stuff to really get a good idea of what Touhou is.

The first 5 games were released on the doujinshi-heavy NEC PC98, and the sixth game 'Embodiment of Scarlet Devil' was released on Windows, IMO being the most popular game in the series. All the newer games have been released on Windows too. If you wanna import it from Japan, or download it from a T0wwent website, then go ahead.

FUN FACT: Not a easy game...

Nichi

Fun fact: I had a Touhou cover song on my iPod before I even knew what Touhou was :3

no it isn't easy. (Unless you're used to bullet hell shooters) I'm a casual Touhou gamer AT BEST.

And as a third option: You can come to Los Angeles, visit the Kinokuniya Bookstore, and find Touhou games and doujin games at a table inside. :3

Haha like I said, most people are introduced to Touhou from the countless music arrangements out there. :3
Have you seen the lossless music torrent? The thing is 1.2 TB worth of Touhou music.

haha, that link was my old Touhou thread in General Computers and Gaming. Feel free to take this conversation there if you like.

Well, I don't have any doujinshi links handy, and I'd have to think about that a bit anyway (I'll have that for you tonight, if I remember ^^; ). Some of the doujinshi out there might require some prior knowledge in order to really appreciate it, so I need to find more stand-alone examples (of which there are many).

Having said that, I can give you youtube links to videos and music. Keep in mind that ALL of these are doujin products created by fans.

Music:

And lastly, a touhou anime (made by the people that made that second to last vid I linked):
Again, 100% doujin product, from the music, animation, voices all.

i have some touhou doujin i bought at a store in chinatown. can't read em' given that they're in mandarin or cantonese or whatever the hell dialect is in hong kong, but still pretty. they're called "Just Give Me One More Coin" by Circle Freeze or something like that.

i could never get into the games, but i have some touhou music. tbh it's mostly the Senya stuff from the anime and such, but it's still pretty, pretty stuff. Check out Opposite World and Iro wa Nioedo Chirinuru wo, both by Senya. her Bad Apple version is good, too. ^^

So, I splurged and bought the Magic Knight Rayearth game for Saturn. Given how the US version had 3 alternate disc labels (One for each of the 3 main characters), I'm hoping I understood the description and will be receiving the disc with Fuu on it :3
(Fun fact: That was one of the first Saturn games I wanted when I first started reading about the system ages ago. For the record, the other is Sonic Jam; a compilation of classic Sonic games)

The desert night sky is a sight to behold as well. (Like holy crap, I can see the Milky Way!)
Someday I'll visit. :3 Most of my trips around the US were for family, and since I have no family up there, I'm going to have to budget for a trip myself someday.

Also, I found your guy:
