She tried to join the CIOST in the early 2000's, around 2002 or 2003, but was turned down on her first try. She was commended for her independence, resourcefulness and talent with machinery, but they were reluctant to accept her for being a very early beta OS, and thought that would make her a liability in case her development were to be canceled. She tried again within a few years, and joined the CIOST in 2005 or 2006. Though she was still a beta OS, she was approved by enough members to be able to join on her second try, and was given the funding by them to set up her machine shop in exchange for building and repairing weaponry for the CIOST.

Technical details

MenuetOS is a modern OS coded entirely in assembly and small enough to fit in a single 1.44 MB floppy disk, and is an independent OS not based off of any existing OS. Development is focused on speed, simplicity and efficiency, and was designed to be easy to for a user to learn assembly programming.

The 32-bit version, Menuet32, is free and open source, though development of it had been discontinued in 2015. The 64-bit version is proprietary freeware, and continues to be developed. MenuetOS's first release was in 2000, and the 64-bit version reached version 1.0 in 2015.

Character details

General

MenuetOS-tan appears as a fairly tall woman with silver eyes, and long wavy, dark red hair in a gradient that is lighter at the ends, and dresses in a simple silver dress over a metallic blue bodysuit. Her dress is held up to knee length with garters attached to her belt so she can run without ripping her dress. More recent additions to her outfit are some translucent blue frills around the collar of her bodysuit, and a matching headband to reflect the addition of translucent title bars in more recent versions of Menuet-64.

She is friendly and loyal, but is reclusive, and easily annoyed by inefficient coding. As an OS that originated with no lineage, she had no family, and immediately learned to fend for herself and be self-reliant.

Being built entirely in assembly and facilitating easy assembly programming, she is a mechanic talented with assembling and fixing machines, and is also a strong advocate for programming in the assembly language for its speed and efficiency, and would gladly teach anyone who is interested. She has mixed feelings about open sourcery and mostly abandoned it, which has caused some to accuse her of being a traitor since the development of the open source Menuet-32 dropped.

She likes to play classic games such as Tetris and Minesweeper, but is an avid fan of Doom and Quake, as these are games that are included with MenuetOS.

She carries around a toolbox, and her weapon of choice is a ray gun that she built. Her hobby is assembling and fixing electronics, which she works on in her machine shop. Owing to the very long period that MenuetOS had as a beta OS, the long-term development plans that its creator had since its earliest stages, and the steady progress that was made during those 15 years, MenuetOS-tan is very determined, but also very patient.

Family and relationships

KolibriOS

KolibriOS-tan is MenuetOS-tan's daughter, derived from Menuet-32. They have some strong disagreements with each other due to their OSes' opposing source models, but care about each other enough to help each other out if needed.

IMSAI 8080

IMSAI 8080-tan is one of the first friends that MenuetOS-tan made in the CIOST. IMSAI 8080-tan approved for her to join both times that she applied, and empathized with the challenges that she faced when applying for the CIOST.

OSC Notes

In the Annex Project continuity, MenuetOS-tan is in the Confederation of Independent OS-tans (CIOST). She is one of the youngest members of the faction, and joined while she was still a beta OS. She is considered one of the friendliest and approachable members of the CIOST, and is willing to help independent wanderers apply, though her personality and her inexperience compared to most other members cause her to clash with some of the other CIOST members.

History and background

MenuetOS-tan not born into any faction, as with the other hobbyist OSes. She was not completely alone as a wanderer though, and still had a team of supporters who helped her when needed.
