Technical details

The Apple III was released as a more advanced successor to the Apple II designed for business users. It ran a new version of BASIC and a new operating system called SOS (Sophisticated Operating System) while retaining backwards compatibility. Its release included much fanfare but is still regarded as Apple's first flop ever for its high price, few software titles, limited degree of backwards compatibility, and the design flaws of its original production run: The internal clock quickly failed, and the circuits of the Apple III overheated and warped because there was no fan, and not enough ventilation.

Apple III's SOS had some influence. It influenced the design of Apple II's ProDOS and the Macintosh's Hierarchical File System.

Character details

General

Apple III-tan is represented as a woman with light red eyes, long dark red hair with three blonde streaks, and metal decorations on her hair, and outfit. She closely resembles an older, taller Apple II-tan; she has the same hairstyle, but wears her hair untied, and shorter, and her outfits black and green, the inverse of Apple II's white and red.

Her black jumpsuit is based off the DHARMA uniform from Lost, and is decorated with an Apple /// name badge. Over her uniform, she wears a dark green skirt, and a beige hooded cloak, which she wears up when around relatives. She wants to interact with them, but does not want them to know her true identity.

She is generally stoic, wise, and a cool big sister type, but still struggles with bursts of anger, and an inferiority complex. She is a pyromaniac and overheats easily. She is highly fond of "Lost", referencing the use of Apple IIIs in the show, and lives with a few of her loyal followers on a remote island. On the island she lives, she built an observatory to do research, and had ambitions to save the world.

She is Apple II-tan's immediate sister, and a half-sister to Lisa-tan and the Classic Mac-tans, as elements of the Apple III's OS influenced the Lisa and Classic Mac OSes.

Family and Relationships

Apple II

Apple III-tan admired Apple II-tan, but was at times jealous towards her over Apple I-tan spending more time with II-tan than her. She may never have actually been intended to be Apple II-tan's successor, due to the Apple III's higher price, and due to the Apple III being intended specifically for the business market. They were not meant to compete against each other, but she was still expected to follow up on her older sister's success, which put more pressure on her when she already did not have much self worth.

She felt like she failed her older sister, and did not feel worthy of being in her presence again.

Lisa

She and Lisa-tan were generally antagonistic towards each other because they believed that they were competing for the scarce attention that Apple I-tan was able to give them. They care enough about each other though that Apple III-tan was willing to tutor Lisa-tan, in reference to features from SOS being incorporated into the Lisa OS.

Macintosh System 1

Macintosh System 1-tan was the only of the Mac-tans that Apple III-tan knew while they both lived at the Apple house. Apple III-tan was somewhat distant towards her, but was also willing to tutor her, since features of SOS were also incorporated into System 1. However, Apple III-tan left the Apple house in 1984.

SAGE

She greatly admires SAGE-tan, and first knew about her early in life. In the early 1980's, SAGE-tan was still in service, and a young Apple III-tan was amazed by her power, and sacrifices she made to try and save the world. When Apple III-tan left the Apple house, she strived to be like SAGE-tan, but was not aware of the fate that already befell her. Apple III-tan never thought that she would meet her role model, but after more than 20 years as a wanderer, she did. While excited to finally meet her, she was at the same time sad over what happened to her, and wants to help SAGE make friends.

Apple III-tan and SAGE-tan knowing each other is a reference to the Apple III hardware, and pieces of the AN/FSQ-7, the hardware SAGE used, being used in the TV show Lost.

GENIAC

How they met is not fully detailed or explained yet, but Apple III-tan being friends with GENIAC-tan, who is also one of SAGE-tan's friends, has been incorporated into OSC fanon. She can empathize with GENIAC-tan's abandonment and long periods of loneliness endured, and likes that GENIAC-tan is not judgmental.

OSC Notes

In the Annex Project, Apple III-tan is a wanderer, and has been since she left the Apple House in 1984. She knew that Apple II-tan was a founder of the Vintage Federation, but avoided visiting for many years because she did not feel worthy of being seen by Apple II-tan again.

History and background

In her very early life, Apple III-tan was a very proud young girl who dreamed of being successful in the business market, but was also sad that she did not get to spend a lot of time with Apple I-tan. When Apple III-tan was born in 1978, Apple I-tan's health was in decline, and Apple I-tan had to spend more of her time teaching Apple II-tan. This caused Apple III-tan to get jealous of Apple II-tan, and to sometimes lash out, and she was deeply saddened over Apple I-tan's death in 1979.

After her debut in 1980, her anger problems worsened, and she was prone to overheating, and setting things on fire. She overcame her problems by 1983, in reference to the Apple III Plus fixing the original Apple III's hardware problems. She went to reintroduce herself, but she was unable to overcome her bad reputation, and later left the family in shame. She was around to teach Lisa-tan, and Macintosh System 1-tan, but was distant from them, and she left in 1984.

One day early in her life as a wanderer, Apple III-tan, along with some of her remaining followers, encountered a remote island where she built an observatory she inhabits. Even as a wanderer, she still knew what was going on with her family. She was proud of Apple II-tan and GS/OS-tan for keeping up their work ethic, but did not think very fondly of Lisa-tan or the Mac-tans for several years. She believed that the Mac-tans were pampered divas, and was especially ashamed by their lack of planning skills just before and during the OS Wars.

But when she heard of when the Mac-tans took matters into their own hands instead of waiting on a successor to do the job for them (the ill-fated Copland and Taligent), she was impressed. She read about the Mac-tans uniting their remaining forces after heavy losses, serving on the front lines to defend the last of their territory, and rebuilding their society. She has been proud of them and her whole family since then, but she feels that she can never return home because of her past behavior, and she felt ashamed that she was not there for her family during the OS Wars. She knows that she cannot just return home as if nothing happened.

Later on, in the late 2000's or early 2010's after GENIAC-tan awoke, Apple III-tan met her, and it because of their friendship that Apple III-tan became willing to visit the Vintage Federation and make the first steps towards speaking with her family again.
