This template was created for the sole purpose of establishing an easy to use character info-box within the OS-tan wiki. The infobox you now see is meant to be used for characters that are personifications of operating systems (a.k.a. OSes), other templates will be created specifically for other types of personifications as they come of need.

Properly built character articles should make use of this template as it is easy to use and there is not much code used in the user side. This would prevent any inconsistencies between infoboxes, even more it would have a set standard of required info to be given in order to maintain an acceptable degree of quality.

The current version of the infobox is modified and ported from [[Template:OStaninfo]], which was in turn modified from the original infobox still seen below. Updating this infobox would be much less tedious than replacing all 100+ pages still using this one.

==Usage==

This template is meant to reduce effort in the construction of tables and give all people the ability to fill out the infobox quite easily and without hassle. all you need to do is copy the following code and paste it at the beginning of the article you want to create/modify/whatever.

Windows Server 2008 (formerly known as [[Longhorn | Longhorn]], not to be confused with the Longhorn that later became Windows Vista) is [[2003 Server | Windows Server 2003's]] successor and is the latest server OS from Microsoft. It is built with the same code base as Windows Vista and shares most of Vista's features.

Like Server 2003-tan and Server 2000-tan, Server 2008-tan is half girl and half mackerel. The mackerel part is yellow and she has curly blonde hair, gold bracelets, a tiara (instead of a hub that the other Server-tans have on their heads) and her maebari (strip worn to cover the genitals) is made of 18-karat gold. She is almost always seen with the other Server-tans.

7-tan, is the anthropomorphic representation of the Microsoft Windows 7 operating system. However, unlike its previous predecessors globally accepted common design, Vis-tan is one to not to have a set design that everyone accepts. This has brought about an air of controversy around it as everyone simply seems to want their designs as the accepted one. However, it can be said that there are popular designs that are most often seen, such as the “Visbou” and “Vistake” designs that are mainly supported by a Japanese image board called [[Futaba]], while the [[+Nijiura +]] image board supports “Chiivis-tan”, one of its more popular designs.

==Personification of Vistan==
Vistan, as previously stated, has no standard appearance that is accepted by all people in the OS-tan community. The community of the Futaba image board had presented multiple proposals to implement a standard design for the Windows Vista operating system. Something peculiar about the Futaba designs is that they seem to lack any real representation of the OS itself, except for the occasional logo inclusion that makes its way to some of the drawings. Many character design proposal have been made, and most were liked. However, only two of those designs have come to be the most popular and overall supported by the image board:

* One of these designs is nicknamed '''Visbou''', which is most often depicted as a young ninja girl. There have been instances where she had been drawn as an adult, but these are usually mature (ecchi or hentai) drawings, so the true essence of it being a version proposal may be questionable. She has grey colored hair, usually drawn short, not going much too further down than her neck. She has light-toned skin color. On her head she wears brown hairclips which seem to resemble screws. For an outfit, she wears a ninja suit of a navy color; the suit’s hakama has open sides that show part of her legs, though this seemingly goes by personal preference of the artists. A signature item she wears with the suit is a red-colored scarf; this one is usually quite long, reaching down to her knees if not depicted as long as to reach the girl’s feet.

*Another designs very popular designs was dubbed '''Vistake''', a girl that wears a sailor fuku. Like Visbou, she has grey hair; though opposed to the previously mentioned, this one has long hair that reaches down to her back if not longer. Her hair is usually kept in a ponytail that bears a grey colored (if not being an actual metal) screw-resembling hairclip. Another of these screw-like objects is found seemingly embedded on her forehead to (seemingly) match the hairclip. However, there have been instances where the design has been made to look like the “Xbox 360” logo, or at times simply not be drawn at all. She wears a red and white colored sailor fuku outfit, these two being the colors of most of the piece of clothing from the neck down. Of her clothes, the ascot, the shirt’s neck, the skirt and the shoes are colored in red, the rest in white. And exception to this seemingly common (and unwritten) rule may be her stockings, which are usually are striped red and white; though, this (style, stripe width and/or dominant color) may be differ from artist to artist. In terms age, this one seems to vary much more than the Visbou design; many images have depicted her with apparent ages from 12 years old and going all the way up to 21 or so.

===+Nijiura+’s Popular Designs===
The +Nijiura+ community (much like in Futaba) have presented and give support mainly, if not only, to their community’s proposed character designs to personify the Windows Vista operating system. A thing that has been seen in common in all of the designs is that the character proposal are highly representing of their character. They have many designs presented, but in the same way as Futaba, only two have been more popular than the rest:

*One of these is designs is known as '''Chiivistan''', a girl sporting a rather revealing suit. This fair skinned girl has green colored hair, said to be representing of the OS’ login screen and default background. Her hair is quite long, usually reaching down to the lower portion of the girl’s legs; a small portion of it is usually kept in a pair of pigtails while the rest sits there on the middle. A collar of a rather eccentric appearance floats or hangs around her neck; it has the Windows “shield” logo that is used to set apart all security features that the operating system has; underneath the shield logo the word “Vista” is written in green. She wears a sort of penguin coat or vest of a black color. This coat is the only thing that she wears to cover her top, and even then it is quite the revealing piece, letting view of the whole center portion of her body, or at least that’s how it is being portrayed (it does seem to have a zipper, or something that would merge that area together). It can be noted that the lower portion of the coat she wears bears transparency, this reflecting on the Aero transparency features that the OS has. Nothing more than pair of black panties cover lower portion of her body; however, it is to note that these are a matching part of the outfit. Black stockings cover up most of her legs, up to her thighs; this while she wears a pair of boots that are either colored white or black, with red borders. Within this design, there are two separate variations of Chiivistan in terms of apparent age; one is is that of a young girl, probably being in her early teens, while the other is a more matured girl bearing physical maturity comparable to [[XP-tan]].

* The other design hasn’t been named as of current knowledge, but it is quite popular among the +Nijiura+ community; this design being that of a young teenager girl. This one has short gray hair, comparable to Futaba Channel’s Visbou design. This girl wears a more simple (and much more conservative) outfit; a one-piece, sleeveless sailor fuku outfit to be exact. However, she does wear sleeves that cover everything from her wrists to her biceps. Like the “Chiivistan” design, this one has a pair of stockings that reach up to her thighs. When it comes to coloring, this may be the Vistan design with the most color variations of all, having all of the colors representing each of the Windows Vista DVD cases (the two shades of green, the blue, and black). There are even instances where the outfit’s fabric has been given transparency to reflect on the Aero features.

===Other Designs===
There have been other suggestions as to how should the Windows Vista operating system be really personified. Among these, there are other OS-tans designs from both Futaba and +Nijiura+ that, though were eventually set aside for their two main character, were thought of as promising candidates to be the “standard” Vistan design.

Many people, both from the Futaba and Nijiura communities as well as other OS-tan communities and solo fans, have suggested that Vistans may be more than one person rather than a single person. In the Futaba community, it is said that their Vistake, Visbou, Spirit and Anubis designs are the ones that represent the four Windows Vista versions; while in Nijura it has been represented by both a group of four Chiivistan of somewhat differing appearance and ages, or with four of their unnamed design of a white-haired young girl but wearing outfits with different colors to show for the DVD case and box. Within the OS-tan Collections community however, the designs preferences are more up to personal preference rather than a standard thought than anything else; while one may consider only the futaba standard, another may think of the Nijiura, or even a combination of the two, or simply make their own designs and “be done with it”.

A thing that has been seen in common in all of the designs is that the character proposal are highly representing of their character. They have many designs presented, but in the same way as Futaba, only two have been more popular than the rest:

*One of these is designs is known as '''Chiivistan''', a girl sporting a rather revealing suit. This fair skinned girl has green colored hair, said to be representing of the OS’ login screen and default background. Her hair is quite long, usually reaching down to the lower portion of the girl’s legs; a small portion of it is usually kept in a pair of pigtails while the rest sits there on the middle. A collar of a rather eccentric appearance floats or hangs around her neck; it has the Windows “shield” logo that is used to set apart all security features that the operating system has; underneath the shield logo the word “Vista” is written in green. She wears a sort of penguin coat or vest of a black color. This coat is the only thing that she wears to cover her top, and even then it is quite the revealing piece, letting view of the whole center portion of her body, or at least that’s how it is being portrayed (it does seem to have a zipper, or something that would merge that area together). It can be noted that the lower portion of the coat she wears bears transparency, this reflecting on the Aero transparency features that the OS has. Nothing more than pair of black panties cover lower portion of her body; however, it is to note that these are a matching part of the outfit. However, she does wear sleeves that cover everything from her wrists to her biceps. Like the “Chiivistan” design, this one has a pair of stockings that reach up to her thighs. When it comes to coloring, this may be the Vistan design with the most color variations of all, having all of the colors representing each of the Windows Vista DVD cases (the two shades of green, the blue, and black). There are even instances where the outfit’s fabric has been given transparency to reflect on the Aero features.

===Other Designs===
There have been other suggestions as to how should the Windows Vista operating system be really personified. Among these, there are other OS-tans designs from both Futaba and +Nijiura+ that, though were eventually set aside for their two main character, were thought of as promising candidates to be the “standard” Vistan design.

Many people, both from the Futaba and Nijiura communities as well as other OS-tan communities and solo fans, have suggested that Vistans may be more than one person rather than a single person. In the Futaba community, it is said that their Vistake, Visbou, Spirit and Anubis designs are the ones that represent the four Windows Vista versions; while in Nijura it has been represented by both a group of four Chiivistan of somewhat differing appearance and ages, or with four of their unnamed design of a white-haired young girl but wearing outfits with different colors to show for the DVD case and box. Within the OS-tan Collections community however, the designs preferences are more up to personal preference rather than a standard thought than anything else; while one may consider only the futaba standard, another may think of the Nijiura, or even a combination of the two, or simply make their own designs and “be done with it”.

Red Flag Linux is a Chinese Linux distro, based off of Red Hat Linux and Asianux and is the most popular distro in China. Macintosh System 7.5-tan is fairly recently-established character, represented as a blue-eyed blonde-haired woman in a light blue dress, white top and taskbar-style armbands and bearing a strong resemblance to the Mac OS 9 and 9.2-tans but her personality greatly contrasts from theirs; 7.5-tan has a serious, disgruntled disposition and wields firearms.

She is fond of the young OSX-kun catboys but still willing to enforce punishment if necessary. In another of the first known comics pages featuring her, 3.1-tan is oblivious to 7.5-tan's disgruntled personality and even calls her Al-chan.

“Vis-tan”, as this character is usually known by among the OS-tan community, is the character personification of Microsoft’s Windows Vista Operating System. However, unlike its previous predecessors globally accepted common design, Vis-tan is one to not to have a set design that everyone accepts. This has brought about an air of controversy around it as everyone simply seems to want their designs as the accepted one. However, it can be said that there are popular designs that are most often seen, such as the “Visbou” and “Vistake” designs that are mainly supported by a Japanese image board called [[Futaba]], while the [[+Nijiura +]] image board supports “Chiivis-tan”, one of its more popular designs.

==Personification of Vistan==
Vistan, as previously stated, has no standard appearance that is accepted by all people in the OS-tan community. Support to any design made is usually known to come from the local group of people of the site where the image originated from, as with the case of Futaba and +Nijiura+ where each site supports their versions and seem “disregard” the other’s. However, there are places where there is support for designs that originate from both image boards, but this is more of a subject of personal opinion of the people rather than common fact, as some may support one or another design.

===Futaba’s Popular Designs===
The community of the Futaba image board had presented multiple proposals to implement a standard design for the Windows Vista operating system. Something peculiar about the Futaba designs is that they seem to lack any real representation of the OS itself, except for the occasional logo inclusion that makes its way to some of the drawings. Many character design proposal have been made, and most were liked. However, only two of those designs have come to be the most popular and overall supported by the image board:

* One of these designs is nicknamed '''Visbou''', which is most often depicted as a young ninja girl. There have been instances where she had been drawn as an adult, but these are usually mature (ecchi or hentai) drawings, so the true essence of it being a version proposal may be questionable. While it's not clear whether initial OSX-tan designs specifically targeted the Jaguar release (the first to be marketed with the feline-inspired codename), the depicted design is at least the most recognized relative to the small Mac-tan fanbase.

The release of OSX Jaguar marks the start of the truly stable OSX platform, making it appropriate that OSX Jaguar-tan is the first among a subsequent lineage of self-confident catgirls ([[OSX Panther | Panther]], [[OSX Tiger | Tiger-tan]], etc.). Jaguar-tan is depicted as a mid-adolescent girl with bright red hair, blue eyes, and jaguar ears and tail. Personifying Apple's fourth major release of Mac OSX, Panther is easily recognized as being the only dark-skinned Mac-tan and in fact one of the few such OS-tans of color. This is due to the co-personification of the actual feline panther, hence the reason why nearly all proposed Panther-tan designs featured a dark-skinned character.

The depicted image is the most recognized of the OSX Panther-tan designs, in line with the other Nijiura.com OSX-tans by the same artists. Personifying Apple's fourth major release of Mac OSX, Panther is easily recognized as being the only dark-skinned Mac-tan and in fact one of the few such OS-tans of color. This is due to the co-personification of the actual feline panther, hence the reason why nearly all proposed Panther-tan designs featured a dark-skinned character.

The depicted image is the most recognized of the OSX Panther-tan designs, in line with the other Nijiura.com OSX-tans by the same artists. Perhaps in part due to the greater refinement of the system, Panther-tan is depicted as an elegant and refined woman (in the same vein as [[OS9|Mac OS9-tan]]) with blue hair, orange eyes and black panther ears. She wears a blue, sleeveless, ballroom-style dress that drapes down to her feet and conceals her panther tail. In addition, she also wears gray opera length gloves and a red ascot tie adorned by a glass Apple logo.

Despite the age of the system, there are still not enough pictures available to piece together a personality. However, all available depictions of Panther-tan suggest a friendly, classy and strong-willed disposition.

While it's not clear whether initial OSX-tan designs specifically targeted the Jaguar release (the first to be marketed with the feline-inspired codename), the depicted design is at least the most recognized relative to the small Mac-tan fanbase.

The release of OSX Jaguar marks the start of the truly stable OSX platform, making it appropriate that OSX Jaguar-tan is the first among a subsequent lineage of self-confident catgirls ([[OSX Panther | Panther]], [[OSX Tiger | Tiger-tan]], etc.). Jaguar-tan is depicted as a mid-adolescent girl with bright red hair, blue eyes, and jaguar ears and tail. She wears a futuristic grey and beige dress and boots, as well as a black choker featuring the glass Apple logo. Unlike the Mac [[OSX-kuns]], a concerted effort has been made to create unique personifications of each of the major OSX releases. The most recognized personificaion of OSX Puma depicts her as a young blue-haired, green-eyed catgirl (or pumagirl), wearing a sleeveless, white-collared black blouse decorated with a green ribbon bow and blue X's. The addition of fluffy socks and penny loafers completes the likely-intentional resemblance to a middle or high school student.

Puma-tan is also not commonly drawn, but is depicted frequently-enough to piece together her personality as being shy, mousy and insecure. Given that OSX 10.1 was more stable than its predecessor and offered some much desired features, the only parallel that can be drawn would be to the criticism levied on Puma for being such a small and timid technological leap from Cheetah.

Cheetah-tan is rarely drawn compared to the more recognizable [[OSX Tiger | Tiger-tan]]; when she is, the personality depicted may range from anywhere between insecure (reflecting the stability issues of the operating system) to mischievous (better suiting the eye patch).

This OS-tan represents the early versions of Mac OS X Server and mainly the prototype version codenamed Rhapsody. She is represented as a blonde-haired woman with hair in a flip-do with a red Apple logo hairclip (which looks like the red Apple used in the Rhapsody splash screen. A white X is added as a reference to OS X) on the right side of her hair and wears a black-and-white minidress with a blue-and-yellow skirt layer fastened to her dress with a Mac OS logo brooch (reference to the Rhapsody logo). She is one of the taller Mac-tans, at a height of 5'10 [177 cm].

She carries a basket of apple cider bottles which she serves to people as she is a server OS and also drives a yellow boxcar as reference to Yellow Box, the very versatile foundation of her OS also able to run on different processors and OSes (including NT and 95 on Intel, Solaris on SPARC and HP-UX on PA-RISC). And also because of this, Rhapsody-tan considers herself the Mac House diplomat. While she isn't able work with 95-tan for obvious reasons, she is able and willing to work with 95 OSR 2.5-tan. And being 100% Java compatible, Rhapsody-tan is also one of Solaris-tan's closest friends and a regular customer at her java shop.

Rhapsody was never released to the public so Rhapsody-tan (although friendly and mostly stable) is prohibited from or unwilling to be around Toshiaki. Being experimental, she also tends to exhibit some bizarre behavior from time to time.

Mac OS 9 is currently the most common and adored MacOS girl. OS9-tan is the personification for Mac Operating System 9, better known as Sonata, named after standard wallpaper for OS 9. Mac OS8-tan was originally a character occasionally seen at Futaba Channel. Better known as Tempo-tan, she was depicted as a young, timid-looking, but otherwise cheerful little girl with a bomb-shaped diaper and a hat in the shape of the the rainbow Apple logo of the classic Macintosh (including a white patch to simulate the bite mark_. She was rarely seen, and pictures of this version are only available at an old archive specializing in the Mac OS girls, located at http://evo7gt-a.hp.infoseek.co.jp/osmac/.

The Mac OS8-tan depicted in the avatar is based on the character design created by [[Our Artists|Aurora Borealis]]. This version depicts Tempo-tan as older, more outgoing, and slightly war-torn (after the market competition wars with Microsoft in the mid-to-late 1990's), but with the same cheerful disposition as her younger self. The beret she wears, as well as her proficiency in bomb-wielding, is also a throwback to the younger version.

System 2-tan looks a lot like System 1-tan but has two straight side ponytails on the left, wears a sash over her dress, and wears long socks instead of leg warmers and has a height of 4'2 [127 cm]. Also their personalities are quite different. System 2-tan is observant, witty and very intelligent, is more calm and stable as a main difference from her predecessor is stability and the Shut Down and New Folder commands were introduced as well as the Minifinder (the first form of 'multitasking' that at least allowed for convenient access to other applications to make switching from one to another much quicker). Macintosh System 1-tan represents the first of the OSes with a full-fledged GUI from Apple that runs on the Macintosh series of computers and she is represented as a small girl with a height of 4'1 [125 cm] who likes 1980's fashion, commonly dressed in a grey minidress with black biker shorts and shoes, white leg warmers, wears a necklace with the Happy Mac icon on it and wears her hair in a wavy side ponytail. She is a very feisty-natured nonconformist and revolutionary with a lot of leadership and charisma although very limited in memory and attention span and also has a one-track mind due to her very adamant nature and due to System 1 not having any form of multitasking or quick access to multiple applications at once.

She is a nonconformist and a revolutionary and although the original Mac OS introduced the error bombs, System 1-tan's weapon of choice is a large hammer which she wields a reference to the 1984 Macintosh commercial. Despite being friendly and straightfoward, a lot of people found her to be intimidating, for being too straightfoward and simple! She speaks in Newspeak (also a 1984 reference) which relates to that. She is a revolutionary although at her older sister Lisa-tan's expense for diverting away a lot of her followers and at GEM-tan's expense during an era when a GUI with icons and overlapping windows were not commonplace.

Mac OS-tan was perhaps the first commonly-known and widely-supported Mac-tan during the early days of the OS-tan phenomenon. Given the popularity of the Windows platform, it is likely that Mac OS-tan was simply meant to be a standalone personification of the Mac Operating System, in the same way that [[Linux|Linux-tan]] was meant to be a lump-sum of all Linux distributions. In early drawings, Mac-tan appears in her standard platinum-white body suit (alluding to the iMac/OSX design motif) but, also with a rainbow-colored apple on her head, a throwback to the classic Macintosh. Some manga strips also featured her battling against [[95-tan|Windows 95-tan]] during the [[OS-tan Wars]], during which time only the classic macs were available (System 7.5, for example).

However, as [[OS9|Mac OS9-tan]] and additional classic Mac and OSX personifications begain to emerge, the identity of the original Mac OS-tan has been subject to extensive variation. In recent years, artists have increasingly personified her specifically as Mac OSX-tan rather than as a classic Mac OS; even the apple she wears on her head is now increasingly drawn as red, or composed of a transulcent material reminiscent of the iFruit designs. Fan-based manga projects such as the [[Mac Manga]] and [[Zerosanity]] completely embrace and build upon the OSX-tan preference. Nevertheless, the OSX classification is not clear-cut either as numerous cat-themed Mac OSX-tans have appeared since, five of which have achieved near-canon status.

In order to avoid confusion, it is suggested that Mac OS-tan remain as a generic personification of all Macintosh Operating Systems, despite the recent additions of Mac-tans representing specific system releases. This will help preserve the artistic and editorial integrity of the works produced featuring Mac OS-tan.

Personality-wise, Mac OS-tan is short-tempered, and is known to throw memorable fits of insane rage when angered. Aside from her platinum-white bodysuit and apple adornment on her head, another memorable feature is the bomb she usually carries based on the standard Macintosh error dialog. She is frequently shown in pictures and comic strips trying to use these bombs against Windows-tans and other miscellaneous characters that annoy her (e.g., [[Toshiaki]], the [[OSX-kuns]]). When offered appreciation, however, her temper subsides and she becomes relatively friendly, if perhaps a bit direct.

The only Apple II-tan identified to date is meant as a catch-all design for all variants of the 8-bit Apple II computer. These include the Apple II, II Plus, IIe, IIc, IIGS, and the Apple III, in addition to all the operating systems released for this platform, such as AppleDOS and ProDOS. Currently Apple II-tan is depicted as a young girl wearing red-and-white Edo period Japanese farmer clothes, a white kerchief around her hair, and a ''suge-kasa'' (Japanese straw hat) bearing the old rainbow Apple logo. She usually has her blonde hair -- done in long twin-braided pigtails -- covered by the kerchief and ''suge-kasa'' for reasons of practicality, although when inactive she will let her hair loose or at least exposed. Her white tunic bears the logos of all the major Apple II hardware labels, whereas her red rolled-up work-pants are patterned with A's written in the old Motter Tektura font as well as A's written in Katakana. She carries few props with her, other than a pole fruit picker to harvest apples with, a basket to carry them, and a golden, apple-shaped locket bearing a black-and-white picture of her mother Apple I-tan.

She is described as beginning life as an idealistic revolutionary, but over the years has settled into a slow-paced but still stimulating life of a natural farmer. She loves hard work, talks with an accent, and has a friendly, witty and rugged personality that sets her in sharp contrast to the latest generation of Mac-tans. Though she does not live with the modern Mac-tans, she still corresponds with them and fills the role of mother figure (and at times father figure!) in Apple I's absence. She does however take care of her younger sister Apple Lisa-tan, and is still served by her long-standing disciple GS/OS-tan.

Apple I-tan personifies the Apple I, a limited production circuit board computer for electronics hobbyists which pioneered many features that made the subsequent Apple II a commercial success.

She is depicted as a young hippy woman in her late teens, with long brown hair decorated with flowers, green eyes, patchy earth-colored clothing, and wood paraphernalia. In addition to having a maternal disposition, she is also considered to be open-minded and idealistic, optimistic in the success of her offspring in leading the personal computer revolution. Owing to the wood theme, Apple I-tan was originally depicted as a living doll (similar to a Rozen Maiden), although a later rendition seemingly depicts her as a regular woman of average height.

Apple I-tan is considered the de facto mother of the entire Apple Family, despite the fact that the Macintosh and OSX lines are not directly related to the original Apple computer line. She is also a deceased character, owing to the fact that few of the actual Apple I units have survived in working condition to this day, and thus has no active user following to keep the system alive. Apple II-tan and Lisa-tan were the only Apple-tans to have known her in life (although the latter was too young to remember); thus given her proximity to her mother, Apple II-tan carries an apple-shaped pendant with an old black white photo of Apple I-tan in remembrance.
