When the IBM-Microsoft Family broke up, most of the family was devastated. Xenix was forced to retire, PC-DOS-tan and OS/2-tan were separated from the rest of their family and ended up solely in IBM's custody where they took control of their training. OS/2-tan was trained to be a very efficient fighter, but came at a cost.

After suffering defeat against the [[Windows Family]] champion [[95-tan | 95-tan]] during the [[OS-tan Wars | OS Wars]], seeing the Windows-tans gain great popularity, took many of her followers, and singled out as an enemy by them, OS/2-tan gained a bloodthirsty vendetta against the [[Windows Family]]. Her only friend at the time, [[RISC OS | RISC OS-tan]] suggested the idea of a protest club as a means to get OS/2-tan busy and productive.

===Founding===
RISC OS-tan had in mind petitioning to challenge the Windows Family's imperialism legally and peacefully. But motivated by spite, OS/2-tan misinterpreted that to mean forming a radical underground resistance group- the Anti$oft Coalition as it's known as today.

===Today===
The Anti$oft Coalition doesn't have any formal headquarters, but its meetings mainly take place in OS/2-tan's run-down office (also shared by PC-DOS-tan) which she can barely afford to maintain, after suffering budget cut after budget cut by her parent company, losing the last bit of financial support at the end of 2006. Their last hopes for funding come from what members are able to scrape together from their jobs.

==OSC Notes==
Each member individually has a great amount of potential and capability but the Anti$oft Coalition fails miserably as a faction because although the members are all friends, they're not truly united. OS/2-tan and [[Visi On | Visi On-tan]] (to an extent) are the only ones with a vendetta and drive to carry out any action against the Windows-tans-- everyone else though is either there to have fun or look after OS/2-tan for the most part. While each member is good at defending their comrades, offense just isn't their specialty.

If there is one good thing that comes out of all of this is that OS/2-tan has some friends and being in their small niche group, they can know one another better.

Featured prominently below is a list of OS-tans, which are named after the operating system they personify combined with the Japanese suffix -tan (たん), an overly cute mispronunciation of -chan (ちゃん) (specifically a child's slurring of it). All were created by various amateur artists; and although the OS-tan phenomenon originated in the Japanese imageboard Futaba Channel and the overwhelming majority of the artwork is still produced in Japan, a growing number of international artists are contributing both fan-based and original artwork of their own. Therefore, this list is meant to record all OS-tans drawn or discovered to date, regardless of location, artistic merit or popularity of the system personified. Profiles will be provided for each character if possible; however, given the incongruous nature of this fan-based movement, these may not always be comprehensive.

In addition, a large number of computer-related characters are also included in this list, given that their important support role also makes them indivisible from the OS-tans (both in fan-based media and real life). These include personfications of hardware, software applications, browsers, websites, malware and game consoles.

Christmas Tree-tan- A Christmas loving virus, who only makes herself known on Christmas. Jolly, and somewhat oblivious to other peoples feelings toward the holiday, Christmas Tree-tan often goes about her 'duty' spreading her version of 'Holiday Cheer' regardless if your in the mood for it or not. Her known activites include; putting up decorations (without anyone's consent) singing christmas carols, and giving out hand-made presents...which are of subpar workmanship and are basically worthless at best, however she does throw a smashing good christmas party in which all are invited, be you Virus or OS your welcome to come. at first glance, she doesn't seem to have any ill-intentions in mind (at least judging by her personality) but being she's only seen when once a year, no one's really given the time to look into her more. However, one can assume that beyond her 'Holiday Spirit' she harbours a more sinister motive.

As said above Christmas-Tree-tan is only seen when Christmas draws near (Decemeber 21 to be exact) after the New Year she retreats from wence she came, not to be seen until next year. Where exactly she goes is unknown, there have been numerous attempts to uncover her seasonal hideway, but paths always led to large evergreen tree with the words 'NOEL' carved on the trunk, which raises the question 'Is Christmas Tree-tan truly a virus?...or is she just a magically enchanted tree given life to spread 'Holiday Cheer' and the 'True Meaning of Christmas'? wheather it's the latter or not is currently unknown but Brain-sama theorizes that she is both of these things. Her role isn't neccisarilly binded to the Virus-tans, she has been sighted doing her 'duty' amoungst the OS-tans, and even gives each of them a present (which is just a picture of a crudely drawn christmas tree, it is known that she drew these herself...). The lights and 'decorations' on her dress are tied into her emotions, and their brightness is dependent on how she feels; If she's happy the lights will brighten and twinkle in a jolly manner, if she's unhappy or distressed the lights will dim, it is believed that if the lights ever go completely out, she'll die. She also seems to be of German decsent and has some knowledge of her native langauge.

Cerberus

Cerberus-tan is a rough, and tough virus-tan with a dog like dispostion, who is also a faithful bodygaurd of Viru-tan. Cerberus-tan's appearance is based on the mythological monster 'Cerberus' (her dog ears, paws and collar) while her tail is coined from Kerberos from Card Captor Sakura (there are designs of angel like wings on the back of Cerberus-tan's jacket, these desgins are also a referance to Kerberos), her attire has a sort of urban/street feeling to it. Cerberus-tan (as stated above) is quite the rough one, and is definetly someone you don't want to annoy, for she's been known to get pretty violent with those who really piss her off. However, despite her imposing disposition, she is faithfully loyal and protective to those she's close to (much like a dog), this being said, it is not uncommon for her to put her life on the line in order to protect her fellow virus-tans from just about anything she sees as a threat. Cerberus-tan is currently the bodygaurd of Viru-sama, and is very devoted to her position as well (another referance to 'Cerberus' for he was the gaurd dog of Hades).

Cerberus-tan has a bad habit of chasing strange things, this includes but is not limited to; butterflies, birds, cars and even her own tail. Her collar seems to have a broken chain attached to it, which points to the fact that Cerberus-tan may have escaped from somewhere, but she never really says anything about her past, or where she was born, so it's currently unknown as to why it's broken. She dislikes NT-tan (Inu-T), and whenever they meet, the 2 of them begin barking at one another...literally, however these 'disputes' rarely escalate to anything violent, she and Acme-tan are also locked in a rivalry of their own, though it seems to be on more friendly terms. It is unclear if Cerberus-tan is a general, like (c)Brain-tan, for she is close to Viru-sama and those close to Viru-sama are considered high in rank, but she doesn't seem to really want to cause any direct mayhem for the OS-tans themselves, instead she claims that I'm just doin my job as a gaurdian. Cerberus-tan does enjoy being scratched behind her ears and on her tummy, but dislikes loud noises, and bad smells. Cerberus-tan is also quite skilled with a wooden sword and is said to rival even 95-tan in combat. It is also believed that she used to be apart of a street gang before she became a bodygaurd to Viru-sama.

Disk Killer

A Tomboy-ish virus who's quick to start a fight but isn't too quick on thinking things through. Disk-Killer has a very rough personality and often when she does things she's often not aware of her own strength and ends up causing alot more damage than normal. However that's not to say she isn't aware of the amount of damage she can cause, in fact some say she acts this way just to see how much damage she can cause. She is an Oni and is often feared by the OS's because of this, they have a good right to be, for she's pretty nasty in her own right. She and (c)Brain are bitter rivals (gives credit to the notion; Brains vs Brawn) and will always disagree with her strategies (even if they're well thought out and have a 100% chance of succeeding) claiming that her own might can outclass Brain-sama's plans. Disk-Killer has few friends, many try to stay away from her because of her rough tendencies, but in reality it's just a cry for attention and friendship. She has a crush on Cerberus-kun, and will often assist him in gaurding the gateway to the Viru-tan Area. Cerberus-kun seems to be aware of these feelings and occasionally returns them. There have been attempts to make Disk-Killer a General, but she always refused this may be because Brain-sama is a General and if Disk-Killer became one, she'd technically be outranked by Brain-sama, something she absolutely can't stand for. Her being an Oni is coined from her alias 'Ogre'

A modest virus tan, who believes in her notion of 'making the impossible possible'. Esperanto-tan (or Esper-tan as some have called her) is probably one of the few virus-tans who were able to not only take on the Windows tans but also the Mac and DOS OS tans as well (however the only reason she is able to infect the Mac-tans is due to the fact she is half Mac virus herself), because of her diverse assortment of OS-tans she can 'infect' she is seen as a crucial ally, and is treated as though she's a general, despite the fact she has shunned all offers to ascend to the General rank. Instead she sees herself as a regular virus, despite her high level of talent and powress. However, Esperanto-tan is extremely persistant, and will NOT give up on a task until she completes it. As her name obviously suggests, Esper-tan is a fluent speaker of the language of the same name (though English is her 1st language) and she's known to unwittingly speak in Esperanto when she's in engaged in a conversation, this can make it a hassle for one to know what exactly she's saying to them (even (c)Brain-sama is sometimes stumped on what she says). Abraxas-tan, however, seems to understand her and it's been known that the 2 of them can go on for hours in a conversation, completely in Esperanto. Her appearance is similar to a 'Gypsy', while the fact she's half Mac virus is a referance to the true virus, being Esperanto had a small portion of a Mac virus in it's code, which in turn, enabled it to infect Mac OSes.

==Character Details==
Tinfoil Hat Linux is a high-security distro, small enough to fit onto a single floppy disk, does not require a hard drive and does not use a GUI.

Tinfoil Hat Linux-tan was first drawn by Aurora Borealis, as a paranoid girl in a black school-type uniform with a red bow tie, brown combat boots and donning a tinfoil hat to keep aliens and other threats from reading her mind. She has short black hair and black eyes. Her favorite offensive weapon is a electric forcefield (which she employs against just about everything she encounters), mimicking THL's highly offensive, not defensive, security.

She was drawn by a later artist, physically similar to the original design, though, perhaps older; the later rendition's design showed Tinfoil Hat Linux-tan as being somewhat more stoic, not showing any form of emotion and wearing sunglasses, in reference to THL's paranoid mode, in which the screen contrast is set very low to prevent shoulder surfing. She's shown dressed in dark colors and as being a spy type, referring to THL's ability to fit onto a single floppy disk. She also prefers to avoid contact with others, because THL has no networking capabilities. Yet she is willing to be helpful if she encounters someone in need that is trustworthy enough.

Although paranoid and usually serious, Tinfoil Hat-tan does have a sense of humor and can poke fun at herself (the documentation does have some humor in it) and her tinfoil hat is the source of her paranoia and without it, she is friendly and almost fearless but it is very dangerous for others to attempt to take off her hat.

A worm-tan who seems to be stuck on St.Valentine's Day. poetic and loving in all sorts of ways. Valentine pilots the skies in search of those who show feelings for one another, if she manages to spy a potential couple she will then deliver a 'Love Letter' to the potential couple, by firing an arrow that has said letter attached to it, once opened it is said that a beautiful poem is written within the envelope, however being she's a worm-tan opening these envelopes is usually not the best of ideas (despite the chance of reading a poem of unparalelled beauty). However she see's no harm in what she does and continues on her 'duty' of spreading love through out the OS world. As stated above she is actually quite the poetic worm-tan and often talks in poetry form always having a rhyme with one word after the other, Unlike Christmas Tree-tan she doesn't disappear when Valentine's Day is over, instead she continues on her tireless job of spreading kindness and love throughout the world. She is a slight 'fan-girl' and absolutely adores 'shipping'. Her appearcne is similar to Flonne's for obvious reasons, while her tactics of bringing couples together are a referance to Cupid.

Byte Bandit-tan's partner, and accomplished weapons master, Lamer is a bit more defensive and stealthy when compared to her friend which some say makes her the most dangerous out of the 2. Her appearance is a bit more technological and cybernetic compared to Byte Bandit, a possible parody of the 'Terminator' series (being Exterminator has just about the same meaning as 'Terminator'). Lamer is a bit more upbeat in terms of personality compared to Byte Bandit, being whimscal and playful (and even childish at times...) but being her idea(s) of 'playtime' involves high powered lasers and explosives, many see her as more of a sadist. Lamer is capable of materalizing many types of weapons (many of these weapons are futuristic, like lasers and such) and is a prodigy when holding one. Being of the stealthy sort, Lamer is highly distinguised in ambush tactics (something you'd expect from her partner _) and Sniping.

Another interesting note about Lamer is that she absolutely loves catch phrases, unfortunetly most of these catch pharses are cheezy or 'lame' (a referance to her name). As like Byte Bandit, Lamer's enemy and target, back in her glory days, was the Amiga family, CAOS-tan in particular. combined with Byte Bandit's destructive assualts and her own stealth and marksmenship, the 2 of them were virtually unstoppable...that is until the discontinuation of CAOS, after which the 2 lost interest in fighting the Amiga tans, and disappeared. After sometime of obscurity they were discovered by Viru-tan and as fate would have it Lamer and Byte Bandit became minions to her, and quickly became Generals in their own right. Currently, both Lamer and Byte Bandit are found usually near Viru-tans residence as the 2nd line of defense against intruders (the last line being Cerberus-tan) but occasionally they can be spotted near the grave of CAOS-tan, paying their respects to a once worthy advisary...

Whale-tan- A discreet and secretive Virus-tan. Whale-tan's appearance is similar to that of Saba, having a swimsuit with a fish-like tail, only the swimsuit in question has features similar to that of a Blue Whale, the 8 on the front of the swimsuit is a referance to one of her 3 alias names '8fish'. Her secretive and quiet personality stems from the fact that the Whale virus is still considered the 'stealthiest' virus in the world despite the up to date, and ever changing security measures of Norton and McAfee. Whale-tan is noted to having the 2nd largest bustline of the Virus-tans, this stemming from the fact that the Whale virus's file size is 9,216 bytes(!). Whale-tan rarely speaks of her origin or her past, thusly little is known about her early virus life, however a quick peek in (c)Brain-tan's files indicate that Whale-tan was supposedly leading a large group of viruses, while in this group she went under the alias 'Mama Ningyo' (a referance to her true alias name 'Mother Fish'. According to the files she along with her many followers were eventually going to take down the Windows family, via infiltration. However due to 'complications' the group mysteriously disbanded and Whale-tan ended up working for Viru-sama as a spy.

Whale-tan likes to eat fish and seafood, infact she's even been seen trying to eat Saba (actually succeeding once, but disliked the way Saba tasted and spat her back out. Whale-tan continues to hunt Saba to this day, only this time she intends to apply different seasonings to Saba). Whale-tan also goes by the nicknames Kuji-chan ('Kuji' is short for 'kujira' which means 'whale' in japanese), Whale-tan is also quite short when compared to her fellow viruses, infact she may well be the shortest there is, despite having the 2nd biggest bustline. she is also extremely sensitive about her weight, calling her 'fat' or otherwise can be a bit dangerous for one's well being.

Viru-tan(Also known as Viru-sama, or the 'Queen of Viruses') Is the unsurmountable Leader of the Virus-tans and is usually the head of operations when it comes to devising sinister plans against the OS-tans. Because of her position as leader of the Viruses, she is often depicted as being elegant, classy (though not so much as snobbish) and an elitist, which some may find strange, being she is often thought of as being a ruthless leader simply because she leads an army of troublemakers and miscreants. Unlike her many followers, Viru-tan is infact a personification for the '''concept''' of computer viruses, rather than the personification of an actual virus. In the beginning, Viru-tan was often depicted as a personification for ALL computer viruses, being she was the only Malware-tan in exsistance, however as other artists (such as Infinity Zero and Gussy Keniji) began creating virus-tans of their own, it was then decided that Viru-tan be appointed as the leader of the growing group of virus-tans, since she was around alot longer than most of the other viruses (IOW, she has seniority).

Viru-tan usually has a spear-like weapon with her, which she uses when she's facing off against an OS, it is believed that the spear is able to transform into other objects as well. Viru-tan has several 'Elite' viruses by her side, referred to as 'Generals', these virus-tans are the ones whom she often associates with when it comes to 'serious business' (c)Brain-tan and MyDoom-tan being the highest ranking in this category. she has a loyal 'Bodygaurd', known as Cerberus-tan, whom is usually (if not always) with in her prescense. It is apparent that she is indeed the strongest out of all her follows, most being limited to what OS they are able to infect in order to cause any real damage, Viru-tan however is able to hold her own against even the most recent of OS-tans such as Vista-tan and even Mac-tans, and goes about exploiting even their smallest vulnerabilites (since each OS-tan has her own 'flaws').

The artist and title for this comic are unknown, but it is mainly referred to as the 95OSR 2.5-tan 4Koma because it is the 4-panel series that the semi-canon character [[95 OSR 2.5-tan | 95 OSR 2.5-tan]] debuted in, and a 95 OSR 2.1-tan | 95 OSR 2.1-tan was mentioned by name (and becoming a full-fledged character years later). This OS-tan represents the early versions of Mac OS X Server and mainly the prototype version codenamed Rhapsody. She is represented as a blonde-haired woman with hair in a flip-do with a red Apple logo hairclip (which looks like the red Apple used in the Rhapsody splash screen. A white X is added as a reference to OS X) on the right side of her hair and wears a black-and-white minidress with a blue-and-yellow skirt layer fastened to her dress with a Mac OS logo brooch (reference to the Rhapsody logo). She is one of the taller Mac-tans, at a height of 5'10 [178 cm].

She carries a basket of apple cider bottles which she serves to people as she is a server OS and also drives a yellow boxcar as reference to Yellow Box, the very versatile foundation of her OS also able to run on different processors and OSes (including NT and 95 on Intel, Solaris on SPARC and HP-UX on PA-RISC). And also because of this, Rhapsody-tan considers herself the Mac House diplomat. While she isn't able work with 95-tan for obvious reasons, she is able and willing to work with 95 OSR 2.5-tan. And being 100% Java compatible, Rhapsody-tan is also one of Solaris-tan's closest friends and a regular customer at her java shop.

Rhapsody was never released to the public and was experimental so Rhapsody-tan (although friendly and mostly stable) exhibits some very bizarre behavior from time to time and because of that, she is usually unwilling to be around Toshiaki or the general public out of the fear of her bizarre behavior getting the better of her, right in front of them.

==Overview==
As stated, this is really a class of OS-tans and not a faction thereof, since there is no organization or membership to speak of. A Wanderer is a slang term for an unaligned OS-tan, someone who either travels too much within different factions to settle down in one, or wants to live a completely independent life with no strings attached, or who simply isn't aware-enough of the ways of the world to know that factions exist. As the Wanderer Class is a catch-all term, the number of OS-tans falling under this group is currently unknown, although the number is expected to be as great as the number of obscure systems around the world (and their derivatives).

While the independent life of a Wanderer may sound particularly enticing, the reality of the challenges involved cannot be understated enough. Living alone, without the protection of a group or any inherit means of defense, leaves the poor OS-tan vulnerable to attacks by misfits, bootlegs, hackers, viruses and any number of real-world dangers. Even worse, the danger of fading into obscurity becomes exponentially greater for a Wanderer. It is for this reason that factions such as the [[Binteeji Renmei]] often try to recruit Wanderers, although the stigma of the vintage label may turn off more than a fair share of them still convinced of their own self-worth.

Ever since there have been OS-tans in this OS-tan 'universe', there have been some who were not in any faction for one reason or another.

The OS-tans of the [[Binteeji Renmei]] were all wanderers at some point, most of them having become wanderers when abandoned or exiled by their parent company/faction, or after their family disbanded due to bankruptcy/being bought out/etc.

==OSC Notes==
While the Binteeji Renmei tries to recruit wanderers into their faction to help them improve their lives, most wanderers refuse because they fall under the assumptions that the paths to prosperity and redemption can only be achieved alone. Many also believe that joining the Binteeji Renmei is akin to giving up their dreams to retirement and would rather risk dying alone in obscurity.

The lives of the wanderers is essentially every OS-tan for herself and many of them live in isolated places but have the freedom to live as they want to (if they can).

==Character Details==
Linux XP is a Linux distribution that very closely mimics Windows XP. Multiple, very different-looking variations of Linux XP-tan exist but they are all the same character and all variations look like a cross between [[Linux | Linux-tan ]] and one of the [[XP Family | XP-tans]]. She likes to dress up like that, to the dismay of her Linux relatives.

She can be generous but charges people after consulting her so many times as Linux XP is shareware. In the spirit of Linux, Linux XP is free to download but like Windows XP, it will require an activation key (after the 99th boot-up and also costs $19.99). Although it doesn't seem like it at a first glance, she is still proud of her Linux heritage. Her closest friends are Linspire-tan and Freespire-tan, fellow Windows-esque Linux-tans and outcasts in the Linux+Unix-tan community.

==Character Details==

There are three known renditions of Lunar Linux-tan. The first is represented as a wizard girl with short, spiky black hair partly in pigtails (to mimic the horned owl in the Lunar Linux logo); light yellow eyes, a wizard hat and wears a wizard robe over a white dress, and also usually has on rollerskates.

The second is represented as a Unix programmer with short, wavy teal hair, glasses, and has antennae on her head for connecting with her moon base and wears a black T-shirt and metallic blue leggings.

Elements from the two designs have been combined, with the appearance of the first design and personality elements from the second.

She is a skilled programmer highly knowledgeable of the Unices, and the old-school hacker culture, although she doesn't flaunt those too much. She is witty, likes to joke around and likes animals -her favorites being owls, penguins and squirrels.

Lunar Linux-tan is [[Sorcerer |Sorcerer Linux-tan's]] first daughter and [[Source Mage | Source Mage-tan's]] older sister. Lunar Linux-tan's and Source Mage-tan's relation with their mother is shaky at best, but they are close sisters often seen together.

She takes after Sorcerer Linux-tan a lot, but instead of identifying as a witch, Lunar-tan identifies as a wizard and is less strict.

==History and background==

Lunar Linux-tan was born in late 2001-early 2002, cloned from Sorcerer Linux-tan without her knowledge, but wasn't abandoned until shortly after Source Mage's creation, Sorcerer-tan saw them as unauthorized clones and abandoned them. Even after Sorcerer-tan's attitude softened up towards them, she is still reluctant to have them follow in her footsteps. Lunar-tan and Source Mage-tan have lived as wanderers for much of their lives, and spent much of their time honing their skills, in part hoping for Sorcerer's approval at long last.

Source Mage is an advanced Linux distribution, based off and built from the remnants of Sorcerer Linux.

Source Mage-tan is represented as an introverted and compassionate mage girl who is a strong supporter of freedom and free software. Source Mage-tan and Lunar Linux-tan do not see their mother often (having a relationship that is shaky at best) but the two sisters are close and often seen together.

She is actually Sorcerer Linux-tan's reanimated clone, magically created from the remnants of Sorcerer-tan's old body when it allegedly got destroyed in an accident. This is a parallel to how Source Mage was created from remnants of Sorcerer after it was temporarily taken offline.

The enigmatic matriarch of all later IBM-tans. Her predecessors were [[Harvard Mark I |ASCC]] (aka Harvard Mark I) and [[SSEC|SSEC]] (Selective Sequence Electronic Calculator). She differed radically from them for being an OS, and as such can be installed on multiple sites, while her predecessors were single-installation computers with a much more limited scope of influence and life force. She never knew them though, because they died before she was created.

GMOS-tan is depicted as a woman with curly blonde hair, a blue and green frilly gown combining Victorian and Elizabethan-era fashions with an industrial vibe; the punch-card theme, collar and tie reference the industrial use of this OS. She was accompanied by assembly worker servants, and was a benevolent queen-like figure to her subjects.

She did not have much of a family growing up since her older sisters died, she was happy to have daughters and they were her immediate family: [[IBSYS|IBSYS-tan]], [[UMES|UMES-tan]] and [[BESYS|BESYS-tan]]. She died in the mid 1960's. Much of what was known of her personality and appearance had been lost to time to nearly all the IBM-tans, but is still revered by them, and the many mainframe-tans she influenced.

Plan B-tan is incredibly resourceful and nonchalant, able to keep her cool and make do with whatever is around when resources are low. She resembles her 'mother' Plan 9-tan and has short but wild white hair with purple tips, dark grey and perpetually droopy eyes with black eyeshadow, wears minidresses with fin-like sleeves and a matching 'tail fin' skirt layer in the back. Her appearance is also based off of the Plan B mascot, an orange fish with purple fins and droopy eyes.

She often accompanies Plan 9-tan and writes down everything Plan 9-tan says, even if it is embarrassing.

Plan B-tan is Plan 9-tan's clone, created to assist her in managing the User Space Gang where she is affiliated. Being Plan 9-tan's clone, she could be considered Inferno-tan's sister. Possibly taking after Plan 9-tan, Plan B-tan created her own 'clone': Octopus-tan.

Barbie Linux is a Linux distribution that was announced in the spring of 2006, but there are very few technical details, no screenshots and few articles still in existence so it has likely been debunked as a hoax. In the articles, Barbie Linux was said to be a user-friendlier replacement for Windows XP marketed towards young girls.

==Character details==
A Barbie Linux-tan exists anyways, represented as an extremely tall woman with long blonde hair, a pink and white minidress and high-heeled shoes. She often wears polka-dotted ribbons as accessories. The Barbie Linux GUI was said to have rounded windows and a polka-dot theme to it.

Despite her extreme height and being the tallest living non-mainframe OS-tan, she is hardly intimidating- even to small children and OS-tans. She is very friendly (although blunt and childish at times); likes cute things and is very outgoing around girls but shies away from guys, believing they still have the 'cooties'.

Barbie Linux-tan is well-liked among the Mac-tans, most of the Vintage-tans and liberal-minded Linux-tans but is derided by the more conservative Linux-tans and Unix-tans for being a 'sellout' or a 'phony' and she regards XP Pro-tan and Vistan as rivals.

Barbie Linux-tan is a wanderer who lives on her own and has an assortment of part-time jobs to make money; mainly as a model, fashion designer and dress maker. And while she needs all the money she can get to continue funding her shops and hire different-sized models for her dresses; she does not mind giving away a few of her dresses, especially to the Vintage-tans.

She doesn't have much interest in being a fighter but she is capable of defending herself, having lived as a wanderer for nearly her whole life.

An extremely obscure OS-tan that originated from the 4-Koma series that introduced [[95 OSR 2.5-tan]]. Although she was only mentioned in brief, an actual character was created in OSC, appearing as a brown-haired girl with a large bow in her hair like the other 95-tans. However, OSR 2.1-tan's bow is made of wires and cables and her shoulder-length hair is in a cyberpunk-like hairstyle. Similarly, she wears a steampunk-style outfit consisting of a black, grey and white dress with a pink bow and leggings, black boots, brown leather gloves and belt, and a black kimono-style vest with a bronze OSR 2.1 brooch. Her steampunk appearance is meant to convey a high-tech look to what traditionally are old-fashioned Windows 95-tans.

OSR 2.1-tan is a sci-fi fanatic, more interested in the future than the present -- in fact, she introduced USB support to Windows, believing it to be the thing of the future. However 95 OSR 2.1's USB support didn't work well -- or rather, although OSR 2.1-tan prides herself as an old-fashioned tinkerer and inventor, her creations rarely work properly.

While she's not good at inventing things, she is a good fighter and wields a bow-and-arrow set she made herself and is a sharpshooter though she primarily uses it for self-defense. She is calm, courteous and values internal strength and self-discipline without the need to flaunt it to the rest of the world. Ironically, she also prefers to live alone and make her living as an eccentric steampunk inventor. So it's hard to say whether her calm and calculating demeanor is Zen-related or whether she's just chronically deep in thought about some new contraption and so instinctively tunes out the rest of the world.

She moved away from the rest of the Windows family and now lives far away on her own, so far away that one must write a letter just to ask a question. For this reason, she only contacts 95 OSR 2.5-tan with any regularity.

==History and background==
95 OSR 2.1-tan was born into the [[Windows Family]] and was expected to take after her older sister, [[95-tan]]. However, OSR 2.1-tan was more of an inventor than a fighter but was still seen as an asset to the family with the hope of bringing advanced technologies to them. She introduced to them USB technology, but many of her demonstrations backfired. She left the family in shame and has lived as a wanderer ever since. Having seen the family's caretaker MS BOB-tan run away from home and given how competitive the Windows Family was at the time, OSR 2.1-tan thought running away from home was the only solution. She is also the only Windows-tan who has known MS BOB-tan and is willing to speak of her.

Among her experiences as a wanderer, she helped 95 OSR 2.5-tan, who had recently ran away herself for similar reasons but was found by OSR 2.1-tan in a miserable state. OSR 2.1-tan gave her the motivation to turn her life around.

Although she lives far away in a remote location, she enjoys her life as a wanderer and has spent more years amidst the company of Linux-tans, vintage-tans, CIOST members, other fellow Wanderers and occasionally the Mac-tans, and are not adverse to helping them out whenever possible, much to the still Windows imperialist-minded 95-tan's chagrin.

==Technical details==
This lineage started with Apple's first computer, the Apple I, followed by its direct descendants, the Apple II and III. The Lisa counts as part of this lineage indirectly, as its OS is partly based off of the Apple III's- SOS. Although GS/OS (and Apple IIGS) debuted after the Mac (and influenced by it), they are included as being the 16-bit versions of the earlier Apple II hardware and OS. Of the original Apple series, it was the Apple II (8- and 16-bit) that lasted the longest, introduced in 1977, and co-existed with the Mac for several years until being discontinued in 1993 while the Apple III was introduced in 1980, but was a flop.

The Classic Mac is a different platform altogether, but is partly related, being influenced by the Lisa's and Apple III's OSes.

==In-story==
[[Apple I|Apple I-tan]] is the mother of [[Apple II]], [[Apple III|III]], [[Apple Lisa|Lisa]], and is the de-facto mother figure to [[Mac OS1|Macintosh System 1]] and [[GS/OS]] (Apple I died before they were born but still revere her). Lisa and System 1 are half-sisters to the other early Apples. Apple I-tan did not live very long (dying in 1979, shortly before System 1-tan was born), so it was Apple II-tan who was the most influential, and for years was the breadwinner, in part because of Apple III's and Lisa's lack of success, but she does not hold their failures against them.

With the debut of the Macs, the early Apples/Pre-Macs welcomed them into the Apple Family.

===Traits and abilities===
There isn't much of a unified set of traits for this lineage, varying a lot in height, hair color, combat abilities and trades specialized in. The most major contrast is outgoingness and ruggedness of Apple I and Apple II (highly open architecture) compared to the more posh Apple III and Lisa (closed architecture), and GS/OS takes the middle ground.

All of them have some skill with making crafts, and have some penchant for telling stories; even Lisa-tan, who still doesn't talk anymore, but expresses herself in poetry.

*Apple II-tan specializes in planting apple orchards, and telling witty stories, and teaching in general. She is also skilled in martial arts.

“Vis-tan”, as this character is usually known by among the OS-tan community, is the character personification of Microsoft’s Windows Vista Operating System. However, unlike its previous predecessors globally accepted common design, Vis-tan is one to not to have a set design that everyone accepts. This has brought about an air of controversy around it as everyone simply seems to want their designs as the accepted one. However, it can be said that there are popular designs that are most often seen, such as the “Visbou” and “Vistake” designs that are mainly supported by a Japanese image board called [[Futaba]], while the [[+Nijiura+]] image board supports “Chiivis-tan”, one of its more popular designs.

==Personification of Vistan==
Vistan, as previously stated, has no standard appearance that is accepted by all people in the OS-tan community. Support to any design made is usually known to come from the local group of people of the site where the image originated from, as with the case of Futaba and +Nijiura+ where each site supports their versions and seem “disregard” the other’s. However, there are places where there is support for designs that originate from both image boards, but this is more of a subject of personal opinion of the people rather than common fact, as some may support one or another design.

===Futaba’s Popular Designs===

Something peculiar about the Futaba designs is that they seem to lack any real representation of the OS itself, except for the occasional logo inclusion that makes its way to some of the drawings. Many character design proposal have been made, and most were liked. However, only two of those designs have come to be the most popular and overall supported by the image board:

===="Visbou"====
One of these designs is nicknamed '''Visbou''', which is most often depicted as a young ninja girl. There have been instances where she had been drawn as an adult, but these are usually mature (ecchi or hentai) drawings, so the true essence of it being a version proposal may be questionable. She has short grey hair, not going much too further down than her neck. On her head she wears brown hairclips which seem to resemble screws. Curiously, the hairclips look like Shiitake mushrooms, but if anything, it's Futaba's other main Vistan design who bears this punny name.

For an outfit, she wears a ninja suit of a navy color; the suit’s hakama has open sides that show part of her legs, though this seemingly goes by personal preference of the artists. A signature item she wears with the suit is a red-colored scarf; this one is usually quite long, reaching down to her knees if not depicted as long as to reach the girl’s feet.

===="Vistake"====
Another designs very popular designs was dubbed '''Vistake''', a girl that wears a sailor fuku. Like Visbou, she has grey hair, but her hair is long, and is usually kept in a ponytail that bears a grey colored (or metal) screw-resembling hairclip. Another of these screw-like objects is found seemingly embedded on her forehead to (seemingly) match the hairclip. However, there have been instances where the design has been made to look like the “Xbox 360” logo, or at times simply not be drawn at all. She wears a red and white colored sailor fuku outfit. Of her clothes, the ascot, the shirt’s neck, the skirt and the shoes are colored in red, the rest in white. Her stockings are usually are striped red and white; though, this may be differ from artist to artist. In terms age, this one seems to vary much more than the Visbou design; many images have depicted her with apparent ages from 12 years old and going all the way up to 21 or so.

===+Nijiura+’s Popular Designs===
The +Nijiura+ community (much like in Futaba) have presented and give support mainly, if not only, to their community’s proposed character designs to personify the Windows Vista operating system. A thing that has been seen in common in all of the designs is that the character proposal are highly representing of their character. They have many designs presented, but in the same way as Futaba, only two have been more popular than the rest:

This fair skinned girl has green colored hair, said to be representing of the OS’ login screen and default background. Her hair is very long, usually reaching down to the lower portion of the girl’s legs; a small portion of it is usually kept in a pair of pigtails while the rest sits there on the middle. A collar of eccentric appearance floats or hangs around her neck; it has the Windows “shield” logo that is used to set apart all security features that the operating system has; underneath the shield logo the word “Vista” is written in green.

She wears a sort of penguin coat or vest of a black color. This coat is the only thing that she wears to cover her top, and even then it is quite the revealing piece, letting view of the whole center portion of her body, or at least that’s how it is being portrayed (it does seem to have a zipper, or something that would merge that area together). It can be noted that the lower portion of the coat she wears bears transparency, this reflecting on the Aero transparency features that the OS has. Nothing more than pair of black panties cover lower portion of her body; however, it is to note that these are a matching part of the outfit. The other design hasn’t been named as of current knowledge, but it is quite popular among the +Nijiura+ community; this design being that of a young teenager girl. This one has short gray hair, comparable to Futaba Channel’s Visbou design. This girl wears a more simple (and much more conservative) outfit; a one-piece, sleeveless sailor fuku outfit to be exact. However, she does wear sleeves that cover everything from her wrists to her biceps. Like the “Chiivistan” design, this one has a pair of stockings that reach up to her thighs. When it comes to coloring, this may be the Vistan design with the most color variations of all, having all of the colors representing each of the Windows Vista DVD cases (the two shades of green, the blue, and black). There are even instances where the outfit’s fabric has been given transparency to reflect on the Aero features.

===Other Designs===
There have been other suggestions as to how should the Windows Vista operating system be really personified. Among these, there are other OS-tans designs from both Futaba and +Nijiura+ that, though were eventually set aside for their two main character, were thought of as promising candidates to be the “standard” Vistan design.

Many people, both from the Futaba and Nijiura communities as well as other OS-tan communities and solo fans, have suggested that Vistans may be more than one person rather than a single person. In the Futaba community, it is said that their Vistake, Visbou, Spirit and Anubis designs are the ones that represent the four Windows Vista versions; while in Nijiura it has been represented by both a group of four Chiivistan of somewhat differing appearance and ages, or with four of their unnamed design of a white-haired young girl but wearing outfits with different colors to show for the DVD case and box. Within the OS-tan Collections community however, the designs preferences are more up to personal preference rather than a standard thought than anything else; while one may consider only the futaba standard, another may think of the Nijiura, or even a combination of the two, or simply make their own designs and “be done with it”.

Saba-tan is constantly being eaten by cats (As another gag of the fact that she's a fish), also in one episode, Windows 95 is seen cooking Saba-tan for lunch, she has been gutted, stunned, and placed on a cutting board as 95 is seen with a sharp knife, preparing to chop Saba-tan up and cook her for ME and 2K to eat. It is still unknown how she escaped that situation since she was unconscious while 95 held the knife up ready to chop her up.

Also in the picture of all the OS-tans, she is seen becoming a cats lunch, however she returns in a later comic, indicating that she somehow escaped being eaten for lunch, or the fact that there are many Saba OS-tans in the OS-tan universe.

==Technical details==
MS-DOS (from the x86 DOS lineage) technically starts this lineage, as Windows was simply a graphical shell for it at first. By the time of Windows 95, Windows was a full-fledged OS but still had DOS underpinnings and relied on DOS as a bootloader, and the lineage ended in 2000 with the debut of the last 9x, ME.

==In-story==
[[MSDOS|MS-DOS-tan]] and [[PCDOS|PC-DOS-tan]] were cloned from [[QDOS|QDOS-tan]], and identified as being from the x86 DOS (then CP/M) bloodline, but were named as the start of a new lineage, along with their sister [[Windows 1.0|Windows 1.0-tan]] in 1985. Their upbringing, culture, and the ties that MS-DOS and PC-DOS had to the early Windows-tans marked them apart considerably from the rest of the DOSes.

Originally, MS-DOS and PC-DOS saw the other DOSes as competition and didn't think much of them until many years later.

The Win 9x moniker for the DOS-based Windows-tans comes from the prominence of [[Windows 95|95-tan]]; her predecessors mostly lived in obscurity, 1.0-tan and 2.0-tan aren't even acknowledged within the [[Windows Family]].

The 9x's have widely varying hair colors and eye colors, but all of them are fairly petite (the tallest of them being 95 or 95 OSR 2.1). Their abilities have a lot of variation, such as 95's sword-wielding, 98 and 98 SE's mech piloting and ME's scallion-wielding, but all of them have the ability to harness the DOS command line and programs.

Newton-tan is represented as a fairy in a grey dress and white blouse with short black hair, green wings and a Newton logo headband. Her eyes are a two-toned red-to-green gradient color.

She is timid and lacks self-confidence, being a commercial failure who left the Apple house in 1998, but is still determined to be helpful to someone in need. Although she can fly, she is afraid of heights.

A self-proclaimed expert writer, as Apple set the bar for handwriting recognition very high, but she is actually only average at it since the Newton, although better at handwriting than commonly believed, didn't quite live up to Apple's promises.

==History and background==
Newton-tan was created as another genetically-altered project, designed to be useful to the Apple-tans and other people she worked with to quickly and cleanly record what they write. Unfortunately, her family may have placed too much hype on her abilities (as a consequence, inflating her ego), and placed their expectations too high and unrealistically.

In her work, she had some writing mistakes she still can't live down, and shamefully retired in 1998. She still lives as a Wanderer, and is often seen with [[A/UX|A/UX-tan]]. However, she did have some influence, teaching the younger generation Macs how to write, and may have inspired the eventual creation of iPhone-tan.

Featured below is a list of OS-tans, which are named after the operating system they personify combined with the Japanese suffix -tan (たん), an overly cute mispronunciation of -chan (ちゃん) (specifically a child's slurring of it). All were created by various amateur artists; and although the OS-tan phenomenon originated in the Japanese imageboard Futaba Channel and the overwhelming majority of the artwork is still produced in Japan, a growing number of international artists are contributing both fan-based and original artwork of their own.

SuSE Linux is a distribution first based off of Slackware and was created by the SuSE GmbH, which was acquired by Novell in 2003.

Two very different renditions of SuSE-tan exist but in both of them, she is a chameleon girl with a green tail as a reference to the company's mascot- the chameleon Geeko. Her clothes are also always green because of it is the color of the mascot and also the predominant color by default in SuSE Linux.

In the rendition by an unknown Japanese artist, she has short green hair with a long and curling cowlick, teal eyes, yellow-green minidress with a dark green sweater and long socks.

In Juzo-Kun's rendition, she has short brown hair, red eyes, wears a full green bodysuit with a matching helmet. Her bodysuit has a yellow front side and is also topped with light yellow and green armor.

One justified possibility could be that although OSX doesn't use error bombs, the early versions of OSX supported dual-booting or emulating Mac OS9.

The Mac Manga portrays her as being OSX-tan, and in drawings of her and OS9-tan in their childhood, OSX-tan is portrayed as obviously being the younger one.

Evoke-tan (formerly known as Damn Small BSD-tan but is still more commonly referred to as such) is FreeBSD-tan's tiny little sister and one of the smallest OS-tans. She is good friends with the other Damn Small-tans as they share similar goals (both Damn Small OSes aim to be modern but take up only ~50 MB of space). Among the 'Damn Small-tans', she prefers to work with high-end users, but is also willing to work with the average user too. Like FreeBSD-tan, she is hard-working but not exactly ambitious, sometimes preferring to take things easy, as DSBSD's slogan is "Think small".

Her appearance is similar to her big sister's: dark red hair, bright green eyes, has a devil tail, and sleeveless red dress. She doesn't have horns, but in their place she wears her hair in pigtails shaped like horns, and decorated with dark red ribbons; her dress is more conservative but is poofy and decorated with bows, and wears white tights and green high-top shoes. Her weapon is a tiny gold fork which is throwback to the FreeBSD and Evoke devil mascot's gold trident, and parallel's Damn Small Linux-tan's toothpick weapon.

She gets along with FreeBSD-tan but keeps her distance out of the fear of accidentally getting eaten. Of the Damn Small-tans, she is the most mischievous and thrill-seeking of them, probably stemming from her experiences with FreeBSD-tan and the User Space Gang, and the notion that what doesn't kill one can only make one stronger.

Primarily she is a wanderer but bands together with the other Damn Small-tans: [[Damn Small Linux | Damn Small Linux-tan]], [[DSL-kun | Damn Small Linux-kun]] and [[Damn Small Solaris | Damn Small Solaris-tan]]. She especially likes playing with [[DSL-kun | Damn Small Linux-kun]]. She is also an honorary member of the User Space Gang.

Contiki is a highly portable, Open Source OS complete with a GUI, multitasking and a TCP/IP stack and only requires as little as 2KB of RAM. It is used in many embedded systems, and has been ported over to many 8-bit vintage systems, making it an OS popular in retrocomputing.

The first microcomputer port of Contiki is the Commodore 64 version.

Contiki-tan is represented as a small girl with wavy light blue hair and blue eyes, her hair is decorated with flowers, wears sunglasses and her outfit has a tropical theme to it. She wears a sleeveless shirt with a sailor collar, a tie-dye skirt, shorts and sandals with wooden jewelry. What she wears is in the color schemes of several of Contiki's ports, her skirt is in the color scheme of the C64 version. In her 'human-sized' form, she is 120 cm, but can shrink herself down to the size of the Damn Small-tans, if not even smaller to fit into and fix small devices, while referencing the extremely low hardware requirements.

She is mild-mannered, adventurous, very social, and is a surfer with a love for environmental science and cultural anthropology. She is a close friend and ally to the [[Binteeji Renmei]], but lives as a wanderer because she travels so much. Curiously, one of her friends is the very hot-headed [[Tiny OS|Tiny OS-tan]], who Contiki-tan always tries to get to travel with her. While the two of them argue a lot, they consider each other friends even though Tiny OS-tan won't admit it.
