Built over a period of 6 years (1945 - 1951), the IAS Machine was an early electronic computer and the originator of the widely-implemented Von Neumann Architecture.

Physically, IAS Machine-tan is slightly overweight, silver-haired and golden-eyed. She's described as imposing despite being average in height, and having a fondness for conservative business-wear.

A prolific scientist and mathematician, IAS worked on a variety of scientific projects - including ones involving nuclear and hydrogen bombs - and managed to be largely successful despite having no sense of internal timekeeping and trouble keeping up with her assignments. A confident and jovial woman, she's known to have a great love of food and drink, notoriously dirty sense of humor (manifested through a fondness for telling bawdy limericks and jokes) and enjoyment of playing games and practical jokes - a favorite of hers being mimicking "regular" human beings in her daily life. In spite of such fanciful pursuits, she remains rather politically-conservative and "straight-laced" compared to her peers and children.

The first user of magnetic core memory, Whirlwind was the fastest computer of its time and pioneered interactive computing. Built for the US Air Force by MIT, IBM and SDC, the [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Semi-Automatic_Ground_Environment Semi-Automatic Ground Environment] was an air defense network active throughout the Cold War. Radar data was collected and processed by AN/FSQ-7 computers at 26 sites across the United States. If detected, the location of enemy aircraft would have been transmitted to interceptors. While it faced a number of serious technical issues and was ineffective against ICBMs, it was the best answer to the threat of bombers, and made advancements in a number of modern technologies, including networking and interactive computing.

During her prime, SAGE-tan was self-assured, professional, and proud of her work. With the progressive loss of her stations, SAGE-tan's well-being worsened, her paranoia sharpening into psychotic episodes and an eventual mental break. SAGE-tan has a number of children. The Selectric line of typewriters was introduced by IBM in 1961. They are notable for being one of the most popular lines of typewriter ever made, having a high level of mechanical complexity, innovative features such as changeable typefaces, quick typing speed and quiet operation. Because of the unique analog-to-digital system used to register keystrokes, Selectrics could be somewhat easily modified into computer terminals - they formed the basis for many popular mainframe terminals, including the terminals used on the IBM System/360, 7090, and other large systems like the Honeywell 6000 series. The world's first word processing system, the MT/ST, was a modified Selectric with a magnetic storage system attached.

WWMCCS-tan's powers have yet to be fully explored in-story or supplemental materials. While she is documented as having the ability to magically-manipulate data and information with the help of special rings, the exact extent of this ability is yet-unknown.

In spite of her intellectual and magical abilities, WWMCCS has some trouble managing the huge amounts of data and messages she receives and processes. She tries her best, but still faces the reality of limited resources.

The oN-Line System (NLS) is an early computer collaboration system. It boasted a number of revolutionary features that would later appear on mainstream computers, including the first mouse, videoconferencing, hypertext links, graphical windows, raster-scan monitors and presentation program, as well as an ancestral wiki program.

The project started in the early 1960s. It was funded by DARPA, NASA and the US Air Force and developed by Stanford Research Institute, first on a CDC 160A, then a CDC 3100, and later still a SDS 940 computer running Berkeley Timesharing System. It was on the 940 that it finally took full form, being demonstrated in 1968 in what would later come to be known as "The Mother of All Demos".

In 1970, NLS was ported to a PDP-10 running TENEX and put to use at SRI as the Network Information Center. However, it had a steep leaning curve and saw little use, eventually fading away in the 1970s.

NLS-tan is depicted as a thin woman with short, light brown hair, green eyes and dressed in modernistic, but comfortable, contemporary 1960s and 70s clothing. She is fond of mice and keeps several as pets; as such, she is often seen with a mouse on one shoulder or in a jacket-pocket.

An unlikely extrovert, NLS-tan enjoys being around and working with people. However, her distant and generally strange personality make her difficult to work with. She is rather work-obsessed and talks mostly about scientific and research topics, but it is often hard for others to follow her due to her rather wordy and complicated manner of speaking. In spite of her esoteric nature, she is an advocate of openness and collaboration in the OS-tan community, and can be seen as a sort of archetypal hacker (even if she had little contact with the hacker communities of her day, and is barely remembered by contemporary hackers communities).

She has the ability to access data about an item, place or person by simply touching the object in question. As well, she is fond of the concept of "total interaction" - but few have the bravery to inquire into what, exactly, this means. It is presumed that she died sometime in the 1970s. There was an attempt to resurrect her in the early 2000s but the project proved unsuccessful and she remains, for now, deceased.

OpenVME-tan is depicted as a short woman. She has reddish-blonde hair (usually worn up in a French twist), bloodshot grey-blue eyes and a pair of mismatched wings - one black and one white. These wings are not a biological or magical feature of her body - they were grafted onto her body at some point in her youth, in one of many experimental surgeries performed to enhance her physical capabilities. These procedures left her not only with wings (and rather prominent scars on her back) but an unusual configuration of internal organs.

VME-tan often wears heavily layered, baroque clothing in the style of Multics-tan, as well as thick plastic-framed glasses.

VME-tan is rather elitist toward OS-tans she considers less-advanced (particularly the Unices and Windows-tans), however her personality is quite whimsical and she is notoriously prone to distraction. She feels above petty bickering and avoids arguments, but is known to become aggressive when threatened.

She enjoys spending time in the outdoors, especially forests, but her job leaves little time for her hobby.

The DEC Faction has its origins in the MIT Society, particularly [[Whirlwind]]-tan, her nurse, [[Memory Test Computer]], and their children, [[SAGE]] and [[TX-0]]-tan. Whirlwind-tan, MTC and TX-0-tan are the ancestors of the PDP-1 line and strongly influenced the rest of the PDP family (as well as the minicomputer class at large), while SAGE-tan played a more tangental role in the origins of DEC. It should be noted that SAGE inadvertently contributed much to the success of the IBM Faction, one of the DEC Faction's major competitors.

The DEC-tans hold their ancestors in high esteem, but the reverence falls short of the sort of near-religious zeal that some factions hold for their ancestors (for instance, the IBM-tans toward [[GMOS]]-heika). Whirlwind and TX-0-tan are likely the best-remembered and most-revered, while MTC-tan has been somewhat forgotten by later generations. SAGE is also respected, although perhaps less so due to her generally distant nature and connections to IBM. The quartet - with its scientist, soldier, artist and nurse - is considered by many within the faction to be representative of the exemplary roles for a DEC-tan, and because of this work within the fields of science, medicine and various arts (which includes fine arts, design and "craftsmanship") are considered especially honorable. Guardianship and self-defense is also considered important, as exampled by their later shift to a military-style structure.

It should also be noted that LINC-tan can also be considered "ancestral" to the DEC-tans, as she is a partial-descendant of Whirlwind and one of the first prominent minicomputers. However, she is rarely remembered as such and tends to be treated with a certain amount of mistrust by the DEC-tans, perhaps due to her strong allegiance to MIT (even during her stint working for DEC) and strange magical abilities.

==Culture==
In spite of their military structure, the DEC-tans are, for the most part, a casual and eclectic group. Although there are a number of different bloodlines within the faction (the LINC-PDP-8 line, PDP-1 line, PDP-10 line, etc.) they behave as if they are one family. They possess a strong sense of camaraderie and communality and while the DEC-tans are not without their inter-factional rivalries, displays of anger and in-fighting are highly discouraged and considered harmful to their cohesion. Like any corporate faction, "outdated" OS-tans are retired to make way for new replacements. While this has an understandable tendency to cause friction, the DEC-tans are trained to accept their retirement and view it as just another stage of life instead of the potential end of it. (Indeed, almost all of the DEC-tans have far outlived their working years and now live out comfortable retirements as hobbyist systems.)

While the majority of DEC-tans are involved in serious work to one degree or another, a sense of playfulness and fun is cultivated and many DEC-tans are involved in hobbies unrelated to their work. Diversity of skill is also encouraged and most member boast at least a few professional skills.

During their time as a military, the standard DEC uniform consisted of a red blouse, gray jacket and skirt or pants with red trim, a peaked hat and boots. Others wore the "unofficial" uniform, a red sweater, white blouse and similarly-colored pants or skirt. However, many DEC-tans took advantage of the lax regulations and modified their uniforms to fit their practical or aesthetic needs.

==History==
====Founding====
The DEC faction has very informal and humble origins dating back to the late 1950s. Its first OS-tan and founder of the DEC-tan "family" is [[PDP-1|PDP-1-tan]], who was born in 1959. She was Whirlwind's daughter, but her design was heavily influenced by experience gained in the creation of TX-0, to the point where there is some debate over who is more closely related to her (and thus her "mother"). However, questions of this nature should be put in perspective by the inherently-ambiguous nature of OS-tan lineage as well as the fact that PDP-1 herself considered Whirlwind her mother and TX-0 her sister.

Their factional headquarters - and birthplace of and home to the majority of the DEC-tans until the 1980s - was a decaying old wool mill on the banks on the Assabet river. While spacious and comfortable for the most part, it was a shabby place, notorious for its leaky ceilings and drafty windows. Later generations of DEC-tans became somewhat more dispersed, with some spending most of their lives in satellite headquarters in Washington, New Hampshire and elsewhere.

In addition to belonging to the burgeoning DEC Faction, PDP-1 belonged to the MIT Society. She spent much time in Cambridge living with her family, working particularly closely with her sister on various projects.

====New Additions====
PDP-2 was the next birth in the DEC-tan family, however, she had little contact with her sister as she was quickly whisked off to work for the US government. PDP-4-tan, essentially a modified clone of PDP-1, worked mostly in industry and science and saw little of the glory that her sister did. PDP-5 and -6 (better known by their "debut" names, PDP-8 and -10) were then next additions, followed shortly by PDP-7-tan. These three presided over some of the most important advancements in, and contributions from, DEC-tan culture: PDP-8 essentially codified the minicomputer as a class, PDP-10 was the first DEC mainframe and founder of the venerable Hacker Culture and PDP-7 facilitated the creation of Unix. LINC-tan was recruited into the faction in 1964 and later partnered with PDP-8-tan. In 1969 they had a child of their own, PDP-12-tan. In 1970, PDP-11-tan was born, and eight years later her daughter VAX-tan was created. Little is known of the lives of PDP-9, -14, -15 and -16.

Born in the year 1964, TOPS-10-tan is the first documented OS-tan in the faction. OS/8 and TSS/8 followed in 1966 and 68, respectively, and the PDP-11 OS-tan family was created throughout 1970-71. VMS-tan and her sister, VAXELN, were created in 1978 and 1987, respectively, and Ultrix - the faction's first native Unix - was born 1984.

====Rivalries====
The IBM and [[CDC Faction | CDC]] Factions are historic rivals of the DEC Faction. Nonetheless, the DEC and IBM-tans teamed up for a short time in the early 1970s in battle against a group of Midwestern societies led by the CDC-tans.

It can be said that the DECs accidentally created some of their worst enemies. In 1968, PDP-8-tan's creator and a group of coworkers defected from DEC and created the Data General Faction, which would soon become the DEC Faction's self-professed biggest competitor. At this point, the DECs did not yet have formal military experience as PDP-1-tan was a pacifist and raised her descendants to be as well. However, the specter of the DG-tans, with their rapid growth, nonstop saber-rattling and allegedly superior technology, struck fear into the hearts of the DEC-tans and they organized into a defense force.

In 1969, [[PDP-7|PDP-7-tan]] was hired by Bell Labs to take part in creating UNIX, who was born in the fall of that year. PDP-7-tan's successor, [[PDP-11|PDP-11-tan]] was also hired at Bell Labs, and her intervention led to UNIX's increased popularity and power that would eventually lead to UNIX and her descendants conquering many computer cultures, eventually turning against the native DEC OS-tans and non-Unix-affiliated PDP-tans (most notably, the PDP-10 line).

Due to the collection of various bloodlines and classes in the DEC Faction, there is no one attitude toward the Unices. PDP-7, PDP-11 and VAX-tan were allied with the various Unices and viewed them as beneficial to their culture, while their native OS-tans - RSTS, RSX, RT-11, VMS, among others - viewed them as a threat. The native DEC OS-tans and Unices fought frequently in the late 70's and early 80's, and the short-lived, late-1970s inclusion of Unix-tan herself in the DEC ranks did little to quell the rivalry. In 1984, the DEC Faction was pressured to create a Unix-tan of their own; thus [[Ultrix|Ultrix-tan]] was born. The Unix-supporting DEC-tans seemed to have viewed this as a positive turn of events and been motivated to fight the "foreign" Unix-tans with a Unix-tan of their own, while the Unix-opposing DEC-tans viewed this as an embarrassing defeat.

====Downfall====
While the DEC Faction was second only to IBM in terms of strength and influence, a number of missteps in the 1980s and 90s ultimately doomed them. In 1978, VAX-tan and VMS-tan debuted. They were considered the "ultimate" DEC-tans, and many other DEC lines were canceled and retired to make way for VAX, weakening the diversity that had been so key to DEC's successes. While VAX and VMS were arguably the strongest and most potentially-influential DEC-tans to live, two things were not taken into account: the fact that the minicomputer race was soon to be displaced by the nimbler and more economical microcomputer race (rendering VAX-tan somewhat trivial) and the fact that VMS-tan would be all but ignored in favor of the more-accessible and familiar Unix-tans.

While the VAX-Unix alliance was wildly successful, VAX-tan's influence continued to be undermined by competitor workstation-tans and the up-and-coming microcomputers, many of whom were forming alliances with the Unices themselves. DEC's made a half-hearted entry into the microcomputer business with [[Rainbow 100]], who proved to have a fatal flaw: a lack of compatibility with [[MS-DOS]] (and Microsoft by proxy).

The Unix and OS Wars further weakened the faction. The DECs and Unices alike suffered huge losses in riches and manpower during the 90s, in part due to [[Windows NT|Windows NT-tan]] conquering much of the server territory that the Unixes and DECs held. While the Unix Family would recover over the next several years, the DEC Military never did. Their society finally fell into disarray in the late 1990s and was conquered by the Compaq (later, HP) Society in '98.

The DEC-tans who were already retired found themselves without a faction. VMS-tan, who was still supported, found herself in a few different factions post-DEC, settling in the HP faction, with HP-UX-tan as a stepsister. ====Current Whereabouts====
In spite of the grim circumstances of their company's collapse, most DEC-tans are alive and doing well for the most part. PDP-1-tan, TOPS-10, OS/8 and RT-11 are affiliated with the Binteeji Renmei and work as a hobby systems. PDP-7-tan and PDP-12-tan are retired and their whereabouts unknown. PDP-10 is a hobby system and rumored to live near a small clutch of vintage computers with PDP-8 and LINC-tan (who are semi-working and retired, respectively). PDP-11-tan is semi-retired and lives with [[CB Unix]], while Rainbow 100, RSTS, Ultrix and VAXELN live as a wanderer. VAX, VMS, RSX and Tenex are affiliated with the CIOST, with VMS still-employed, VAX semi-working and RSX and Tenex hobby systems. DOS-11 and TSS-8 are presumed deceased, and PDP-9, -14, -15 and -16's statuses unknown.

BOS/360-tan is the oldest of the IBM System/360 OS-tans, and is also TOS/360-tan's twin sister. Being a small stop-gap OS until a more advanced one would take her place, she was very thin, physically weak, and unfit for active duty. She looks a lot like OS/360-tan, but much smaller and thinner, and mainly wore punch-card theme dresses with long coats.

Aware of her origins, and fate of being obsolete from the start, she was gloomy, reclusive and borderline suicidal, but did the best she was physically capable of at work, primarily working in operations.

She tends to insist that she majored in music and physics or biology, although she remains quite vague about the exact extent of her education.

She continued her studies and work normally throughout the 1950s and 60s.

====ILLIAC III and IV====
Starting in 1967 she underwent training with the Burroughs Corporation in Pennsylvania, in preparation for her transition to her next state - ILLIAC IV.

However, in 1968 she was involved in a laboratory accident at her university - a fire that badly injured her. While her physical wounds were repaired quite quickly due to her regeneratory nature, the psychological damage was profound and permanent - she developed a severe phobia of flames and explosions. This fear was intensified in the 1969-1970 period, when she became the target of protests over her ties to the US government and suspected involvement with the nuclear research program. She was not involved in atomic weapons research, but the rumors proved destructive; she was not allowed back to her university due to fears that she would be attacked or killed.

NASA instead offered her employment and in 1972 she moved to California to work at Ames Research Center, under the cover of being "hospitalized". While work restrictions were initially placed upon her due to fears of overheating, she became an indispensable part of their team, and at her peak she is said to have rivaled even [[CRAY-1]]-tan in terms of power. She was employed by NASA until 1982.

Her work involves teleconferencing, and as such she is often on the phone.

Character-wise, OS^3-tan is often likened to a stereotypical librarian. Quiet and reserved in personality, she may come off as meek at first glance but is actually rather stern and demanding, being particularly fussy in matters of time and money. Unusual for an academic timesharing system-tan, she charges users for her assistance by the hour. As such, she is extremely punctual and keeps excellent track of time and work done, and is not afraid to simply quit working if a user hasn't paid up or charge a user even if they haven't done any constructive work with her (as she might say, "They shouldn't have hired me if all they wanted to do was slack off!"). This serves as a contrast to the majority of academic OS-tans, who are generally more laid-back when it comes to interacting with students.

A product of MIT's TX-0 (and earlier Whirlwind) project, the PDP-1 is an early influential mainframe computer. It is known as being the ancestor of the PDP computer line and influencing many minicomputers of the 1960s. PDP-1 is a small preadolescent girl with blonde hair typically tied into twin buns and blue eyes. She wears round glasses, a blue and white uniform and carries a slingshot. She has an innocent, child-like attitude, but is notoriously feisty, as evidenced by her great tenacity and resourcefulness. She's nonviolent for the most part but not above stirring up a row with another OS-tan – IBMs and other large mainframes are a favorite target of hers'.

Favourites include gaming, writing and playing baroque classical pieces on the piano, as well as model railroading and amateur electronics.

==History and background==
PDP-1 is the daughter of [[Whirlwind | Whirlwind]], younger sister of [[SAGE | SAGE]] and [[TX-0]] and elder sister of [[CTSS | CTSS]]. The first DEC-tan, she was born in Maynard in the late 1950s and debuted in Boston in 1959, where she subsequently lived with her mother and sister. The pet of the MIT computer department, she forged many friendships with students and professors who relished teaching the clever girl new things. Her relationship with Whirlwind was affectionate and close but she was more distant from two of her three sisters; CTSS running in an entirely different group and SAGE living far away for the most part (on the occasions she did meet with SAGE she tended to treat her with curiosity and mock-rivalry; looking at her sibling as a sort of archetypal brooding big sis in need of some lightening-up). PDP-1 and TX-0-tan had a close relationship, both emotionally and geographically - the two girls were best of friends and ran in the same social circle.

She became fast friends with the younger generation of MIT OS-tans, ironically becoming a sort of universal “little sister” to all.

Her duties were also required at DEC. The mother of the PDP family, she also became the matriarch of all DEC-tans – hardwares and OSes alike. PDP-1's determination led her tiny nation to many early victories – notably against the IBM hegemony. Their successes inspired many nascent tribes to take aim at the established hierarchy and marked a shift in computer society; one that would result in the eventual overthrow of the Mainframes.

In 1973 Whirlwind and CTSS died; PDP-1 was devastated but accepting of their fates, and it had little permanent impact on her optimistic outlook. Even as her usefulness was eclipsed by more powerful computer-tans, she remained a beloved figure and stepped into a comfortable retirement. A honourary member of the Bintenji Renmei, she chooses to live separate from the group; instead, residing in a community of vintage computers in California. She often visits her fellow DEC-tans and continues to hunt for SAGE, in hopes of reuniting her entire family.

==Technical details==
BTSS was a timesharing system for the SDS 940 small mainframe computer. It was developed at UC Berkeley as a part of Project Genie, a DARPA-funded computer research project comparable to MIT's project MAC (at least in concept - MAC was much larger in scope). It was later sold with the SDS 940 as a commercial product.

While BTSS is largely forgotten today, its heritage lives on in the TOPS-20 operating system. It is also speculated that BTSS may have influenced Unix somewhat, due to Ken Thompson's involvement with the system.

BTSS-tan is depicted as a woman with blue-purple hair, dark, sienna-tinted skintone and light purple eyes which often described as lively-looking but intimidating as well. She is quite small and lightly-built, but her graceful demeanor and commanding mannerisms tend to make her come off as "larger than life" to those she interacts with. She generally dresses simply and elegantly and concept art puts her in a floor-length, art nouveau-style gown with an embroidered collar, long, kimono-like sleeves, strapped sandals and jewelry.

BTSS-tan's personality is sharp, intuitive and intelligent and she has a natural inclination toward leadership and working with others. Similar to [[Multics]]-tan, she eschews social elitism and enjoys interacting with people of all stripes, even those who are unfamiliar with or reticent toward computer-tans. Indeed, she played an integral role in the Community Memory Project, an experimental project involving human-computer interaction on a community level. As a part of her duty, she often socialized with people around Berkeley, going to cafes, book shops and other casual gathering places, a favorite hangout of hers being a little record shop. She would also collect and post all matter of messages, and using her computer-tan magic would match queries with answers and requests with replies.

Many early timesharing system-tans have code-produced supernatural powers, and BTSS-tan is no different. Her specialized form of sorcery involves telepathy and clairvoyance. While useful (particularly in aiding her understanding of others), these abilities were also quite intrusive to the point of annoyance at times. As well, she was skilled with an aptitude toward "general-purpose" programming / sorcery, allegedly being one of the first OS-tans to have this broad set of skills.

While BTSS-tan was originally only an academic system, her talents were later put to use in the corporate realm. Under the name SDS 940 Time-Sharing System-tan, she worked for BBN, played a large role in the Tymshare network and came to know a number of high-profile computer-tans of the era.

====Family and Relationships====
BTSS-tan is the ultimate ancestor of [[TOPS-20 | Tenex]]-tan and considers herself to be Tenex-tan's "mother", although she had little involvement in Tenex's birth or upbringing. Tenex seems to at least partially reciprocate these feelings of familial connection, although she doesn't seem particularly open about it.

BTSS-tan assisted in the creation of [[NLS]]-tan and later worked as a close associate of hers. As well, she is said to have played a small role in the design of [[UNIX]]-tan, although this connection remains somewhat apocryphal in nature.

She was friends with most of the native Bay Area computer-tans, [[WAITS]]-tan being an dear friend of hers'.

NOS/VE-tan is depicted as a young woman, with long, wavy light blonde hair and large blue eyes. Somewhat fragile and sickly-looking, she is small, thin and has pale skin.

NOS/VE-tan is mysterious - little is known about her personality or life, a situation compounded by her introverted and meek personality and status as last CDC-tan born before the demise of their company. She is known to be a great admirer of [[Multics]]-tan, even going as far as attempting to dress in the elaborate, Rococo-style fashions Multics popularized. However, because of budget and culture restraints, NOS/VE has to settle for far more modest and plain attire than her idol wears. Unlike some of her older siblings and co-workers, NOS/VE is a notoriously bad fighter - having received little instruction in fighting by her already-crumbling company.

Kronos is a timesharing operating system for the CDC 6000 series mainframe computer. While it was a popular operating system among CDC customers, it was replaced by NOS in the late 1970s.

==Character details==
Kronos-kun is depicted as somewhat tall and willowy-built blond-haired, blue-eyed man. He wears round-framed glasses - despite having no clinical need for them - and typically dresses in conservative business wear, like suits and ties. He is often depicted carrying a pocketwatch.

Personality-wise, Kronos-kun's seems to fit the bill of the stereotypical businessman - modest, rational, no-nonsense and somewhat austere, with an extreme dislike for tardiness and time-wasting. Within the CDC family, he acts as something of a foil to NOS-tan and [[MACE]]-kun, whose personalities tend to be frenzied and volatile. His business savvy and sound mind have gained him the favor of [[SCOPE]]-sama, who chose Kronos as her second-in-command; as well as CDC customers, who appreciate his shrewd and efficient mind.

===Family and Relationships===
While Kronos-kun is the genetic son of MACE-kun, he seems to have inherited none of his father's psychological issues. He is dedicated to keeping the peace among the often clashing members of the CDC family, and his only real enemy seems to be [[NOS]]-tan. Outside of CDC, Kronos is documented as having a rivalry with [[Multics]]-tan, arising from Multics' successful takeover of sections of CDC territory and her displacement of Kronos-kun from his post at the University of Calgary.

Kronos-kun is often depicted as being popular with the female OS-tans of his day, and is confirmed to have had a few relationships. He was a couple with [[MTS]]-tan, although their wildly divergent attitudes doomed the relationship. He also dated [[BUIC]]-tan for awhile; this pairing was more successful, however it was cut short by BUIC's untimely death in 1983. There is some debate about whether or not Kronos and Multics-tan ever had a romantic relationship, albeit one of the love/hate variety.
