It's sickening what they're doing with XP (though the same could likely be said for 2k as well) : |

I mean, I've been running XP for 4 years, I've had one BSOD (back in the fall of 05'), but it did an automatic system restore to an early state and I haven't had one incident yet. It's caught two viruses (winter 05'), back when I was using IE 6. After taking more precautions, I haven't gotten one since. I'm considering buying an XP installation disk or whatever, in case I want to run/install XP when I inevitably get a new computer

As for 98 on OLPC....ehmmmm....I'm sure the world is aware of my thoughts on non-NT Windows (IE, a trainwreck!)
Oh, come on. At least give the poor chaps W2K for their trouble. Also, windows 98 was an even larger trainwreck than the other non-NT windows.

Dumping more articles pertaining to [possibly] my next laptop, or at the very least another mainstream cheap Linux UMPC....

It bests the EeePC in storage and Operating System (the ability to install +17GB of software is a big deal!), although it won't be as rugged due to the use of a traditional hard drive.  Plus there are no details whether the version of gOS used has been customized for fast bootup times the way the AsusOS was (which averages 8-10 second bootups.).

C-Chan

Woohoo!  KDE 4.0 has been released today!  ^v^

Which isn't particularly newsworthy now, given there are still a lot of usability features that have to be addressed now that a wider audience will be testing it.

But among many other exciting features that will become apparent over the next couple of months, work is on the way to make compatible versions for Mac and Windows (I assume OSX and XP respectively).  Not only would that be a breakthrough in cross-platform diplomacy, it would also allow me to run KOffice and Krita natively whenever I have to use a WinBox.  ^^

In other news, the new GBook has been announced (although I don't like the price):

http://www.slashgear.com/ces-2008-everex-089524.php

And the compact desktop maker Shuttle is releasing $200 mini Linux boxes too:
http://www.engadget.com/2008/01/08/shuttle-launches-199-kpc-linux-box-99-barebones-kit/

Bella

Hmmm...so, KDE could be used as a desktop environment in OSX and Windows? That's cool, but it seems a bit too adventurous to me ;)

That GBook is SHARP! I thought they were only making an UMPC version, which I probably would be too interested in (as I've said before, my laptop is my desktop). But the GBook has about the same specs (even better, I'd say) as our HP notebook...

And those Shuttle PCs are so cute ^_^

KDE FOR WINDOWS!?!?! HONTO KA!?

Ah, life is beautiful. Goodbye, explorers of all kinds.

On the cute mini Linux machine front.....

More news on the Cloudbook, plus the uber-cute little gPC Mini:

And in semi-related news (relevant to Office 2007), an article debunking a lot of trash talk from a previous article denouncing ODF in favor of the "superior" OOXML format:

Today I was reading PC World, what I thought was a blatantly Windows-centric magazine...despite that, they had glowing articles about OS X Leopard (!), excellent reviews of Macs (!!), they gave Ubuntu a lot of mention, it got a rating of 95 points and was their product of the month, calling it one of the greatest reasons for a Windows fan to try out Linux (!!!)

And the EeePC got a mention too, among it's specs they listed "percent of name that's E: 60%".

And I LOL'd.

*shuffles outta here*

Gya!  I'm so proud of my baby girl!  ^___^

Funny story,... I accompanied a friend of mine to buy a MacBook today, and, low-and-behold, what did I end up doing for 30 minutes flat?

....Yep, talking about my EeePC to the Apple sales clerk AND curious onlookers.  If not for the fact that I eventually helped my friend pick out a MacBook, I'd swear I was gonna get booted off that store for "selling" a competing product (although I made it a point to call it a "complimentary" machine).  ^.^;
[Interestingly-enough, we were all collectively disappointed that the Macbook Air was not a UMPC as some of the rumors stated -- cause obviously from all the cooing and attention-grabbing, cute little laptops sell.  ^__^]

In any event, couldn't help but feel like Lt. Colonel Maes Hughes brandishing photos of Elysia.  ^v^'

As for the Macbook itself, it was very neat.  Had a futuristic magnetic AC power coupling-thingamajig and everything.  But by GAWD, I had forgotten how HUGE 13" laptops are.....  ^______^;

Added after 14 hours 29 minutes:

FYI,... Bella-san, HELP!!!  ^0^

LOL!

Better than when I showed off Puppy Linux to a Mac loving relative...all I got was a furrowed brow : /

Oh, those cute little laptops...

But I gotta admit...

I likes my desktop replacing laptops :P

I had always heard that Linux was pretty big in Russia (or was gaining popularity)...hopefully some of our western school systems will take notice of this :P

^ That totally sucks! What a freakin' bummer!

Heard about that on Fark today.

The submitter agrees too... In the "Sad" category with the headline of "OS/2 isn't getting open-sourced, ever. Which is a shame, since it's still better than Vista"

C-Chan

EEEP!!! AURORA-SAMA, SINCE WHEN?!!!!!  @0@

*feels shame*

I'M SO SORRY!  I SOILED YOUR DELICATE EARS!!!!!!  ;^0^;

Hey, C-Chan, I'll fill in those expletives for you...

fsck!!!!

But this is what really broke my heart: "ibm-going-open-source" in the URL. For one millisecond I thought a miracle had occurred -___-

But I guess OS/2 has the unfortunate obstacle of possibly having M$ code. And IBM doesn't want M$ litigators and/or goons coming after them.

But wait...I dunno if it'll never get open sourced. Let us look at Multics; OS/2 and Multics share a few things in common, both were too advanced for their own good, shunned by their companies, have had important influence on competing OSs, and have had long painful declines while keeping a small but loyal userbase. And in one case the users have actually gotten their source code (though it's quite useless at of now).

*Lesse, Multics started to decline in the 70s, development was canceled in 1985, it effectively died in 2000, was opened in 2007....*

*OS/2 has been going downhill for years, but is not quite dead yet...*

*gets out calculator*

*haphazardly smashes hand against keypad Stephen Colbert-style*

Mmmmhmmm....by my humble calculations, we will see OS/2 open sourced by IBM in the year...2027! Save the date people!

You're not the only one. I was wondering why senpai was defaming it so vehemently; I was anticipating a vastly different page. Drat! I had my hopes up for this petition! ;_;
