Freespire-tan...in a comic with Linspire-tan!

http://i155.photobucket.com/albums/s320/BellasOS-tans/free.jpg

Freespire-tan is Linspire-tan's sister. They usually get along...being the more "windows-ish" of the Linux community, they are often scoffed at by more advanced and specialized Linux-tans, so they must band together (along with Linux XP-tan. However, (And this explains what the comic is about) Freespire-tan is a bit annoyed because her sibling is not truly free software, as is she. Linspire-tan retaliates by calling sis a hypocrite...because some Freespire-tan programs must be purchased. Oh, sibling rivalry.

Frespire-tan's colors come from the OS's logo (as do Linspire's). Her style of dress is like that of Linspire-tan's. I was going to do a "portrait", but then I decided a comic would be better ;)

QuoteBut anyways, beautiful work! You did a great job capturing the emotion and drama!

Thanks!

QuoteBut may System 7-tan get revenge against her and win! (However doing such thing would destroy the 'plot' of the OS-tan comic I'm working on if it happened there!)

Can't wait to see the comic...especially if it has to do with poor 'Blues' :)

QuoteBut I will say this,... what comes around goes around. ^^
*continues reading Vista negative reviews gleefully*

Oho...am I hearing chatter of a Vistan/Leopard-tan showdown? Ponders showdown...There are four versions of Vistan (Home basic, premium, etc...not counting actual artist's versions, which are like 5,000...), vs. one Leopard-tan who's a time-traveling genius...so I'd say it's an even conflict ^_^

SUUUUUUGOI TO THE MAX!!!!!!  ^V^
Freespire to me was one of those filler OS-tans that I really never gave much though about, except that she'd have her hair in wave-shaped pigtails.  So seeing this makes me overjoyed, not only because you created a beautiful rendition of her, but also because it has,... wavy pigtails!!  ^V^

Birds of a feather, I declare!  ^___^

Fufu,... well, Freespire actually does have the better case, since any Linux program has software that can be purchased (think Crossover for Linux... ^___^).  Linspire (fka Lindows) sells for $50 USD still, I think, so has more of a responsibility to prove she has more to offer than her younger, cheaper kid sister.   ^___^

Your drawing might as well be a portraiture, but I definitely appreciate the comic style.  ^.^
So much so that you've gotten my own creative juices flowing,... I feel it's about time C-chan offered some long overdue C-chan fanart.  So whadya say,... would you be interested in seeing a short 4koma about Lin-chan and Free-chan?  ^____^

*sits back and watches the fireworks fly as their WGA check fries them up from the inside out*

Yep,... fair match,... if not just a bit unfair to the poor Vistans.  `v'

Plus there's also Beryl-equipped Linuces in the flanks that can also wear down the Vistans even further.  Especially if this rumor holds out to be true:

I added those wavy pigtails almost as an afterthought...at first I was going to give her a hairstyle like Linspire-tan's, but then I decided she should look different...

Sounds great! I'd love to see your take on Linspire-tan and Freespire-tan  ;010

Right now I'm thinking up some Unix-tans...like HP-UX-tan, who would be a very secure and intelligent character, who's best at workstation and sever duties...and A/UX...Not sure about her attitude (A sever too, I guess), but I'm sure she'd quite like her Mac OS X relatives, seeing as they share a common Unix heritage, more so than her "classic" Mac relatives...which could make for some family conflict ;) I can see her as a aunt (or some sort of "matriarchal" character) to the Mac OS X girls...

Oh yes, I read OS/2-tan's profile in the annex...what an incredibly complex character...one I must to a drawing of! ^_^

Bella

QuoteI've made an A/UX-tan! She's a pig girl who is very fond of wrestling, space travel and daydreaming and she calls the Mac-tans her 'kids' because the Mac-tans that are older than her are a lot shorter (except for System 5-tan but she doesn't see her) and the ones that are taller are younger (for the reference, A/UX-tan is slightly older than System 6-tan). Gets along with the Mac-tans well but doesn't see them much as she is a wanderer.

Neat design! Do you have any drawings?

QuoteAnd that Freespire-tan + Linspire-tan picture is awesome!

Thank you!

QuoteI should definently draw some fanart! BTW, What's Freespire-tan's personality and is it okay if she were to appear in zerOSanity some time?

I would be honored if Freespire-tan appeared in your comic! :D zerOSanity is great! Freespire-tan's attitude is easygoing and friendly, a 'people's OS-tan' who usually shies away from more advanced OS-tans like Arch Linux-tan. She usually gets along with her sister Linspire-tan and cousin LinuxXP-tan, as being the more 'windows-esque' of the Linux family they get picked on sometimes. However, sometimes Freespire-tan is antagonistic of her sister, because she's angry that she's not free like the other Linux-tans. She usually works things out with her in the end, though.

As for OS/2, I'm thinking of doing a drawing of her (See...I already put those Unix-tans on the backburner..for now...), in the days that she was still friendly with the windows-tans. Maybe right after the M$/IBM 'breakup', when she still wanted to fight to get her family back. Perhaps sadly looking at a picture of Win1.0 or MSDOS-tan, or something of the sort.

Birds of a feather, I - do - declare!  ^v^

QuoteSounds great! I'd love to see your take on Linspire-tan and Freespire-tan

I'm thinking of making it one of those silent 4komas, with expressions and minimal use of signs to speak for the characters.  ^__^
Each panel will represent a day-in-the-life of snapshot for the years 2005, 2006, 2007 and a small peak at 2008.  This will give us the opportunity to see Freespire-tan as toddler and child, before ending with adolescent and adult where your rendition is.  ^___^
I hope to change Linspire a bit too, particularly a nice cameo of her mandarin dress.  ^.^

Wanted to start it today, but my brain cells are a tad sleep-deprived, so need to "sudo shutdown -r now" my system.  ^____^;

A yes, Aurora and I have talked a bit about A/UX-tan, after an unfortunate wanderer got chewed up for bringing her up at Net Characters.  -v-;

If memory serves, the fun starts from this thread going forward:

Oh,... well, OS/2-san can wait till the other Unices are done, since she ain't going anywhere.  ^.^
But thank you though for the offer.  ^v^
It's a trade then,... you draw OS/2 and I'll do Freespire.  Now that's what I call a collaborative effort!  ^___^

Recently I doodled a [very bad] sketch of a young OS/2, mixed in with a few others here...

http://ostan-collections.net/imeeji/albums/userpics/10570/HandSketches2.png

(you can tell I suck at hand-drawing... ^^;)

But I've always been a proponent of mixing and matching the look of an OS-tan to account for age, changes in clothing/hair, fads, etc, so my hope was to make the young OS/2 look radically different from her Warp persona.  ^^
The idea for her younger self was a 3-way mix of elements from my adult rendition (including elements from Darknight, SleepyD, Aurora and Kami-Tux' renditions), the two-prong pigtails from the lost japanese OS/2 proposition:

http://ostan-collections.net/annex/Images/OS2twinpigtail.png

and definitely the glasses and healthy confidence of the legendary Merlin-chan (not an OS-tan per se, but a magical girl that uses the power of OS/2 -- but I still feel she deserves at least a small nod ^^):

http://ostan-collections.net/annex/Images/cm59.jpg

Clothing, though, I'm a bit slow with, so that's never crossed my mind really.  I do know is that she didn't manifest her Star Trek passion till a little shortly before her Warp years, so her clothing would definitely look more orthodox.  -.-

But this is all a moot point, since the sketch is specifcally for OS/2 circa 1989, happy times before the break-up and when she could still call Gates "Father" rather than something I can't repeat.  ^^;
The time period between the break-up and her Warp years (when she takes on 95/NT) is pretty much fair game, since those were particular turbulent times for her.

Not only did she lose her "family", but IBM took full control of her training and upbringing.  While they were effective at making her a lean, mean, efficient fighting machine, they were also mercilessly spartan in her training and kept her cloistered even while the Windows were quickly expanding their horizons.  Ironically, with her drive to bring her family together, she would often neglect the last bit of family she had left.

PC-DOS-tan, having never recovered from the loss of her twin sister, rarely seeing OS/2-chan anymore, and receiving nothing in the way of love or compassion from her employers, gradually adopted some very unhealthy habits.  -___-

In the present day, PC-DOS now works as a temp for OS/2's struggling business -- however, they've cooled to a mere cheapskate employer/used-and-abused employee relationship, comical yet at the same time sad since it's a way to disguise their mutual unwillingness to talk of old times.  -.-

Bella

The drawing I might do is a young OS/2-tan running hand-in-hand with Win1.0-tan (not long before the 'breakup'), catching butterflies...I might also add a cameo of a toddler Win2.0-tan, too :) But I haven't decided if I'll do this or something else...perhaps a scene like I said before, one of OS/2 after the breakup but when she still wanted to fight to get her family back...Or....I could do one where OS/2-tan and one of the early Windows-tans are trying to hold hands, to stay together, but their "companies" (like a hand or something, reaching out for them) are pulling them apart...

Awww,.... these really are very sad now that you think about it.  ;v;
That's why I'd love to make vintage-tans, since they've all lived through quite a lot of hardships.  ^^

Your running idea would take place sometime around 1987, when OS/2 was born.  Though only 2 years older and not a fully-developed OS, 1.0-tan would've definitely have been fascinated by OS/2-chan, taking care of her as if she were her very child.  ^^
2.0-chan is born near the end of '87, but since she was also a fairly immature OS by comparison to the OS/2 project, she would easily have been a toddler then and stayed a child-type way for the remainder of her life.

The holding-hands idea would've easily have been 1990.  I might recommend a slightly older 2.0-chan, since like OS/2 she also wanted to keep the family together (but with no power to stop it).  Besides, 3.0-sama (now 3.1-sama) did not get along at all well with OS/2.  -.-'

I think this is the one I'm going to do...it seems the saddest...

Yeah...not like our spoiled rotten rich XP-tans and OS X-tans ;) *rambles off in old-timer voice* Don't know the meaning of hard work, no good punks...

Darn right!  Punks I say!  ^v^

...............Oh wait,.... you said OSX-tans and yet I'm standing on one!  @____@

UWAAAAAAAAHH!!!!! Gomen, Pu-chan!!!!  ;^0^;

BTW, haven't done too much yet on my Freespire-tan fanart,... anything I can add for you perhaps?  ^____^

Bella

OS/2-tan and Win1.0-tan:

http://i155.photobucket.com/albums/s320/BellasOS-tans/os2.png

They're trying to stay together, but their "companies" are trying to keep them apart, symbolizing IBM's and M$'s 'breakup'. I might add some tears, after I find a good tutorial on drawing them ;)

Next on the agenda...I might do a comic strip, featuring Macintosh system 1-tan and an IBM-tan (Probably PCDOS-tan...if I am not mistaken, that was Macintosh's #1 competitor at the time)...the idea came to me a few days ago, wouldn't it be funny to do an OS-tan comic parodying that old Apple "1984" ad? Except with system 1-tan hitting PCDOS-tan with the hammer XD

Aurora Borealis

Your latest picture is so cute yet so sad at the same time! ;__;

And that comic strip idea... Yes! Please do draw it! It would be doubleplusgood! :D

QuoteThey're trying to stay together, but their "companies" are trying to keep them apart, symbolizing IBM's and M$'s 'breakup'. I might add some tears, after I find a good tutorial on drawing them

hmmm,... not sure if that's something you can find in tutorials, so it's probably safer to base that on observation.  For example, Anime "serious" tears are usually depicted like so:

Amorphous white shapes trickling from the corners of the eyes (including some bubbling at the tear dots), with very slight shading and shadow-casting.  I've seen them transparent too, although still with the inclusion of slight shading and specular highlights.  ^^

As for the drawing itself, I'm honestly speechless.  'v'
Perhaps its my own bias talking, but I think this is my favorite of your masterpieces,... and considering the jaw-dropping level of the Tiger-sama and Pu-chan pics, that speaks volumes.  ^^
You've captured the youthful tenderness of the young OS/2, and the gentle humility of 1.0-chan perfectly, it definitely heightens the heart-wrenching moment even without tears.
You also did a magnificent job on OS/2-tan's pre-Warp hair -- it's a harmonious blend of everything I talked about earlier, and certainly will help me a lot with my future projects.  ^v^
1.0-chan's hair also follows Aurora's and my design beautifully, and the added gloss over the already bright color makes her face radiate with the glow of innocence (innocence shattered by such a heartless event).  ;___;

And to top it off, your clothing design is peerless.  The minute details on the leggings, the frills on the skirts, 1.0-chan's shawl,... everything is gorgeous as well as appropriate for the time period depicted!  ^v^

I could continue with this the whole rest of the day, but bottom line is that I love it to bits.  ^___^
Thank you for drawing OS/2 and Win1!  ^v^

My poor PC-DOS... ^___^'

Eh, but at least back in 1985, PC-DOS-chan was still a happy, tough little cookie.  Even with the occasional skirmish against those "GUI-loving Mac-tans", she knew she always had a lovable twin sister to go home too (as well as young GUI OS-tans of their own to take care of) and that gave her strength. ^.^

Since this was back in the 80's, I already hoped that PC-DOS-tan would dress radically different from how she and MSDOS do now (as would be the case in my MicroOVA).  Along the lines of Chobits, I wanted to make her standard dress similar to this alternate rendition of MSDOS-tan:

http://ostan-collections.net/imeeji/albums/os-tans/DOS/dos11.png

...Except with inverted colors.  ^^

However, this would not be a "combat dress", so whatever she ends up wearing when she's facing up against OS1-chan's hammer, I leave to your very very very very capable hands.  ^___________^

Tsubashi

Your so cool, Bella-sama! You did such a good job capturing the emotions within the picture!

I mean, I remember absolutely hating anything that was even remotely tied to M$ during the OS wars (My dad was an OS/2 specialist), but even I feel sorry for the breakup when looking at that picture. Now that's saying something. You are a very talented artist, and I'm very glad you showed up!!!

Keep up the great work!

First off, here's the comic strip:

Er...I didn't really make her that different...and since she's carrying an IBM Thinkpad, I believe the timing is quite off ^_^ This isn't actually supposed to be in the 80's, it's more like System 1-chan's recreation of the commercial, if that makes sense... ;013 My comics usually aren't quite as thought-out as my drawings...I try to make them funny and as good as possible, but little details I usually leave to my portraits and scenes.

QuoteYou really should consider designating this as an image thread -- not to say people don't click on text links, but if the majority of visitors just "skim" these pages, then they're likely missing out on your beautiful artwork. -___-

Nice drawings! I like the little messages behind PC-DOS-tan!
Though is it just me, or do you have a lot of BASIC files on your floppy?

QuoteYour dad's an M$ hater, eh ^_~
Well, he used to be, but now that they've pretty much conquered the market, he's sorta like system 7-tan. He's lost his fighting spirit. T_T

Quote*waits patiently for someone to ask...*

Well, since you put it so bluntly, why not? I keep hearing about "Bad Mac" things, but most of them are made up or PEBKC (Problem Exists Between Keyboard and Chair) ^-^
