OS-tan/Anime PC Meter

OK back to the topic. Here I would like to introduce an interesting Windows Vista gadget I wrote, which is a CPU/RAM/Drive/Network meter presented in a cute and Anime-like style! So, when you see the CPU lady glowing in red, you know the CPU is busy :P

(http://www.animetheme.com/sidebar/sc_pc_meter_03.jpg)

Major Features (version 1.6.1)

   * CPU/RAM/Drive/Network meter presented in a cute, Anime-like style!
   * Multi-core CPU supported
   * Advanced monitoring details, such as virtual memory/network usage and disk activity (as flashing of bars), through the use of WMI
   * Interactable interface with extra info and actions available when you place your mouse pointer over or click on various parts of the gadget
   * Customizable settings

You can download it from the link on my signature!

Comments? Suggestions? Please let me know!

This is only the beginning of my OS-tan gadget project. I am still working on several other OS-tan-related gadgets which will actually make the OS-tans come alive on your desktop! You will be able to even design your own OS-tan animation/interaction in a simple way! Stay tuned!

It seems I get the first response. Welcome to OSC, AnimeTheme-san. Hopefully you will find a comfortable environment here. It is, I believe, an atmosphere quite conducive to the prolific explorations of the creative minds who reside here, as evidenced by the seemingly ceaseless abundance of quality artistic works with which this forum is permeated.

It is wonderful to see someone with a definite goal and a plan to get there. Good luck on your project. It is a rather interesting idea, making OS-tan Vista Gadgets. A while back I made a series of OS-tan Dashboard Widgets, but Wikipe-tan seems to be the only surviving remnant ^.^
Judging from the screen shot, they look good. My only objection is the size. Taking your image's 0.625 ratio, and the standard resolution of 800x1280... I assume you can resize them, but I have no way of testing.

The original screenshot was taken on a 1440x900 desktop, but there is no need to worry about the size. The gadget is big only when you use it undocked on the desktop. It is fully functionally when used on the docked sidebar. It is a lot smaller, while still looks cool.

Larger Screen Cap (http://www.animetheme.com/sidebar/sc_pc_meter_02_full.jpg)

All 4 meters are running on these screenshots. You may choose to disable some of them. You may even run them in "compact mode" to further save screen space.

Is there a compact mode for the undocked mode? I find the sidebar annoying and almost always disable it. Albeit, I hardly use gadgets, but I have run across a few I would have liked if not for their completely unwieldy undocked forms.

Added after 1 minutes:

Oh, and is it dynamically scalable? If it take up that much room on a 1440x900 imagine a 1024x768 ^.^

All settings and options, including the compact mode, work on the undocked version as well.

Full-size screenshot of the gadget in compact mode (http://www.animetheme.com/sidebar/sc_pc_meter_04_full.jpg)

Technically speaking, the gadget is easily scalable, but I tend to like to allow undocked gadgets to have little limitations when used undocked on the desktop. I think it works well on the standard 1024x768 desktop even when undocked, but I suggest you simply download it and try it out yourself LOL

Hey, welcome!

Your PC meter is cool, but my hard drive makes weird noises if the drive meter is enabled... 'aggressive' disk space checks, perhaps?

I use FSO (File System Object) to check disk space, and WMI (Windows Management Instrumentation) to check disk activity, nothing really fancy, and it shouldn't cause any extra drive activity by its own. Do you mean there is any extra/abnormal disk activity just when the drive meter is running? Are you using it on Vista or XP?

Yeah, the drive meter (not the whole gadget) causes some abnormal disk activity. Dunno exactly what it does, but it keeps doing the same 'startup noise' you hear when you start up the PC or load a big program not already into memory. And I'm using Vista 32bit.

First of all, make sure the "noise" really comes from disk activities. The drive meter bar border should flash (or turns white) when your drive is busy reading/writing, or you can check the HDD LED of your PC (usually available on the front panel of your PC case).

How many drives (especially hard drives) do you have on your PC? Any "special" drive (such as network drive)?

Good thing there is that sidebar program for XP because there aren't very many Vista users (as far as I know of) on OSC!

For XP sidebar program, I recommend this one, "Alky RTM Sidebar for XP". This seems to be the most common one among the XP sidebar user community, and the responses are mostly positive (although I have no XP machine to test this myself).

My latest gadget project is "System Animator", which was posted here a few weeks ago. Sadly, no one seemed to give a shit about it :( Seriously, I had more fun working with System Animator than this PC Meter gadget, as System Animator has way more potential to allow user contribution and create interesting outcomes. I have had quite some progress during the past few weeks. I strongly recommend every single Vista user in this forum to check it out. Try it before you judge it. It may be way more interesting than you imagine!

i use vista currently. been meaning to downgrade.
or at least on the main computer. ol' shitty's running win. 2k, my sis is running something......win with mac overlay, i think.

Added after 2 minutes:

oh and yes, thankyou! so much! i love it! especially since you gave more options w/ the expansion pack.
i love the other stuff too, the meter (don't use it because it takes up a tiddlebit too much room) and the calander.

and i also love the computer themes, i have the ff7 one enabled, makes it feel all old skool. i feel all warm and fuzzy inside. <3

now, can you come up with a computer sounds package that has the old error noise? i miss it. ;_;

Probably can't afford all those new wingdingy fancy computers that's needed to run them newfangled OSes?

Well, use low-spec modern OS'es, then.

Xubuntu, Puppy, et cetera. Derp.

win98 is still alive for 11 years and works better than XP(i tested both in a dell dimension XPS B733, my current computer) and i have it for experimental/work purposes(home office). Too many people between latin and north america are still using it in old and some "new" systems(relatively).
A powerbook 3400(from 1997-currently dead  ;123  ) was my jukebox since i receive it like a "war trophy" when i entered to a technical school 3 years ago. It's sound system was extraordinary and makes "silence" the sound from current powerbooks-macbooks. OS before death: MacOS 8.6(OS9 makes s*** my poor ram-48MB). Sorry Sonata.

And i know people that are using 68k based macintosh for printing and commodore amiga for video editing. They have the money for newer or "better" systems, but they(including me) can do the best work with those "obsolete" machines.

Other thing, here in Peru all these are considered "obsolete"(and Apple is only known for the ipod/iphone).

PD: I have linux(PuppyOS) for emulation/hard work. Any interested in a "BitchOS-tan"?

WOW large off-topic

PD2: Anyone that know the author of this: Rsidebar (http://www.softpedia.com/get/Desktop-Enhancements/Other-Desktop-Enhancements/RSidebar.shtml)?
Is an almost useless "vista-like" sidebar for win98. maybe this helps.

Any sane IT-specialist would kep an OS until it really dies beyond repair..
Some companies even use pre-x86 hardware because it still works great and it would then be unviable to buy new hardware...

True, but if you use that as an argument to use Spitfires in the airforce, you'd lose 'cause you can't COMPETE.

I don't, at least, know of ANY company here who uses anything older than like, Win2k...

Like i said IF IT STILL WORKS OKAY...
Of course spitfires don´t work today, but old OSes still do, as long as you don´t need the stuff (read, eyecandy) supported by new stuff...

Or as long as your 20-year old printer work fine. Because if it crashes, there's no way to repair it, and there are no other printers supported by your OS, and you can't mail documents to any other system because yours simply doesn't know what the hell a mail IS.

going back to the theme.

Like playing i unpackaged the .gadget file with Universal extractor(i supposed that is a package :p is not a bad idea)
and i obtained this(see photo):

(http://img14.imageshack.us/img14/2269/obsanimecalendar.th.jpg) (http://img14.imageshack.us/my.php?image=obsanimecalendar.jpg)

a js folder with scripts(i understand what do them), two folders with the same images but with different sizes and a .css file in it's own folder. Looks like html(or better said, IS HTML/XML!)
Can i convert it in a web page(and use it with the "obsolete" Active Desktop)?

To realize it i need to dispel some doubts.Excuse me if the questions are stupid, i forgot some html concepts for years.
1.-How it works the .xml file and the .htm files in win vista(gadget.xml looks useless, only shows info about it and credits)?
2.-Only one month(icon.png)?
3.-How to insert both scripts(or which i should to insert first) in a html file?

If this works, some gadgets can be ported using this method  ;025  Equally, i sent a message to Xstyle(the Rsidebar creator) about this. I'm waiting his answer.
PD: Take a look to the reffered program(not only works in win98, i tested in XP too). It's too simple, but it continue being a good idea. Only one caution, it's "miniplayer" requires windows media player installed.

Yeah, Windows Gadget Platform is indeed a browser-based (IE) one, and using HTML is the most common and simplest way to make a gadget. However, the gadget platform does have its own unique functions and stuff (namely the "System.Gadget" object), and therefore gadgets can't be used directly on other platforms. Some code changes are necessary. In short, I think a gadget is still best used as just a gadget... LOL
