Title: OS-Tan Animated Desktop Assistant Project
Post by: deusprogrammer on September 06, 2007, 10:16:13 pm
Okay everyone knows the YouTube video that has Windows XP-tan welcoming the user to the computer...but as far as I can tell it's only a video.  And I know there have been people who managed to get it set up as a background that starts up with their computer...but I want to do more.  I want to make a OS-Tan Desktop Assitant with the Graphics Engine I am working on for my game.  A little side project like this is exactly what I need.  And we could make it a community project.  Basically I need all the artists who would like to be part of this to contact me and we will get started immediately.  Basically I envision a desktop assistant that appears just like the one on the YouTube video, except you could dress them however you want, choose from several OS-Tans for your background, and then on top of that interact with them.  For example they would keep track of the last time they saw you, and if you leave your computer idle for too long they start wondering where you went, and then when you come back they tearfully welcome you back.  Also they could dress differently based on the time of the day or start acting sleepy at night (KAWAII!!), and give you useful information like your CPU Usage, number of emails in your inbox...etc.  In any case the possibilities are endless.  Everyone interested in helping, email me or reply to this thread.  I would love to have more programmers if there are any out there, but I can handle that part myself if need be.  Mainly I need artists...artists, artists and more artists.  And anyone who wants to submit ideas for what the desktop assistant will do, just reply to this thread and give your ideas.  And so there is no misunderstanding, this project will be GNU freeware and will be available for whoever wants to download it.

Added after 1 minutes:

I just thought of something I want to add...we need some voice actors too...to record the things she would always say...like the welcome or the welcome back...the shut down message...etc.

whoa whoa, the project objectives are pretty high >_>

I'm not the most reliable person here, nor the "artist" with the greatest imagination or speed, but I COULD help. Maybe. If more people join, then I can support. But then, I tend to dissappear often due to uni work, but I could help from time to time with artwork.

This is supposed to be as animated as the "XP desktop video"? because that's a lot of frames that must be drawn...
How much time would be needed for the project? long projects tend to end up dead...we have had several of those on these forums. Also, how much modification does your engine need?

And voice actors...those are going to be hard to find >_>. I think we should stick with dialogues balloons :D

Also I think that having just one OS-tan would be good enough for a beta version.

Interesting idea. I have always thought of doing a program like this, but I lack the knowledge and time -_-

P.S: also, nice to meet ya. I don't go to the "user intro thread" as often as before.

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm,...................  Â¬v¬

I hate to pile on even more things to do, but I've always wanted to do something like this, and I do like collaborative projects so,.....

Dagnammit, it's just too tempting!!  ^____^

In any event, I do have to agree with Darknight on some points -- while I don't doubt your programming abilities, I do need some guarantee that you will see this project through to fruition, and withstand the inevitable DELAYS that do sadly plague our projects here.  ^^;
I would encourage a simple OS-tan Assistant as kind of a pilot program, to ensure the process is feasible,... I might even suggest that you consider starting with something like Infinity-san's mini-style graphics....

http://ostan-collections.net/imeeji/index.php?cat=11498

...just to ensure we can produce all the necessary frames in a cost-efficient manner.  Then if it proves successful, we might try experimenting with something more along the lines of a full-body rendition a la that famous YouTube XP.  ^^

I do agree that voice bubbles would not only be less of a hassle, but would also increase the modularity of your application.  After all, if I created a VMS-tan skin, an XP-tan voice would be WOEFULLY inappropriate for such a mature and serious character.  ^^;
Besides, you can always include a function where a user can assign any sound file he/she wants during key notifications (such as startup or errors).

Question.... though you did say GNU, would this Desktop Assistant be Windows-only, or can you make it Mac, Linux and BSD compatible?  Linux has something similar built in called AMOR (stands for "Amusing Misuse of Resources"), but the project has been discontinued for some time.

I agree about using mini-style graphics for an alpha, since It'd help us on doing all the work faster and have an idea of how many frames are required and how much work its needed.

I have been making a Vis-tan lineart the whole evening, and I'm not even finished....I can tell you that it's an slow and tedious process since I'm using a mouse...

I know that some Japanese series/H-Games release from time to time CD's with special content, and sometimes they release things like these, but I'm not sure if they're mostly static images or if they're animation heavy. It'd help us to decide how to make this.
Also, I have seen on the SOS-dan imageboard (NejinOniwa should know) desktop helpers, but I have never tried one of these, so It'd be nice to know how much animation they have and what they do. I think they don't do anything aside sitting there in the windows, but anyone else have tried them?

...
Or...maybe doing this as H-games do, where the expressions is the only thing that changes. Of course, several poses, but not TOO heavy animated, at least for a beta release.

Currently, my graphics engine is written in DirectX so it's Windows only at the moment, but I have written my graphics engine around a core wrapper that can be easily changed to work with OpenGL (so that it would be work with any OS, assuming I make a binary for each machine).  I am going to start by modifying my code to make a proof of concept program, and then I will call on the artists of this forum who want to help.  But I wanted to find out who is interested and get ideas for the final product.  The initial beta will be simple and only greet the user and say goodbye and in between just make idle motions.  The final product will have all the ideas I have put forth as well as the ones forum members put forth.  But I need to start hearing ideas so I know to leave pieces of my code open to add on those items as I go.

Basically guys, I feel I have found a forum where I belong, so I want to contribute to this forum the only way I know how.  My art is iffy at best, but my programming is my pride.  So tomorrow in between classes I'm going to start experimenting with my graphics engine.  I have demos of what it can currently do if anyone cares to play with it.

No problem, I understand the feeling quite well and am grateful by your willingness to contribute.  ^___^
Just be sure not to let this interfere with your classes, and you got yourself a deal.  ^v^

......

Course now we have to consider which OS-tan should go first.  We have no choice but to do a Windows-tan for the time being, but I'd like to lobby for one of the lesser drawn characters.  ^.^

Maybe Windows 3.1 or CE or Saba or Odyssey or Neptune.... or even the Goddess herself..... OSR 2.5-sama..... ^_________^

well...I'd choose XP-tan since she's the one who would attract more interest to the project :P. If not Xp, then I'd vote for 3.1-tan. Or 98 (hacchan).

Or even better than any of the previous: 95-tan :D

...
Well, I'm thinking of something like a visual novel system (not the program, but the pics), where the characters never move, only change facial expresions. Maybe the some head tilt, and eyes movements when idle. It could smile from time to time, etc. When angry, it could use a sort of beep (like a windows warning sound). Maybe she'd start to get "worried" if she doesn't detect mouse movement during some time. And get angry if you don't hold the mouse over after some time?.

But I still need to think a way to produce a design modular enough to allow things like head tilt. I'm not sure Photoshop it's the best for that, but It's my only option.

Of course, we could have more than 1 pose, but then It'd look weird without a properly animated transition.

If you want a Graphire2 Tablet, I have one I would be more than happy to give you.  I just upgraded to an Intuos3.  And most H Games (and Anime in general) cut down on their animation budget by only animating eyes and mouths and by looping animations while animating only when necessary.

ah, don't worry. In fact, learning to use a tablet while I'm already busy in uni would take too much time. And I have no moneys :P. And no, I don't accept gifts :D, but ty lol.

Indeed, the H-game way to do things would be useful for this. I'm still worried about if transicions between poses without animation would look ok.

I wonder if it's a good time to bring up Infinity-san's old movie:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MSNy1aoyBtw

Just to see if it inspires something along the lines of the Mini route.  ^___^
I'm just saying because I do have a Mini template vectorized already:

http://ostan-collections.net/downloads.php?view=detail&id=94

...so we can use it to start creating keyframes on demand if necessary.  ^.^

Oh, and don't use tablets either (they tend to be a liability when using Inkscape), but I will accept a nice delicious Tablet PC if you have one.  ^____^
(preferably one I can install Tablet Linux on..... ^.^)

And actually I have programmed something very similar to this for a webpage in Java.  It was called "Web Hostess" and I used my very own catgirl Melon-chan for the character.  It was only a face though and I essentially did for it what you were saying, just animating the eyes and mouth.  For animations for our desktop assistant, it wouldn't have to be too animated.  Just a few different stances (to convey body language) each with a set of eyes and mouths to match.  A variety of "stamps" we could put over the main sprite to indicate emotion (like the veins, the ghosty spirals, the sweat drop, snot bubble, etc...).  And then the only thing you would have to worry about is transitions.  We should limit the stances to 4 or 5 at the most...maybe less...but we would need just enough to make it very, very cute!  For one thing I envision when there is little mouse movement to have her tap on the monitor glass from her side to see if you are there.  And something that would be hard to implement, but cute, would be for her to peek around open windows to see you (or even move them...but that would be annoying).  What else would be cute would be to empty your recycle bin you could just drag it into her open hands so she can go empty it for you =3.  I could think of so many reasons to drag something into her hands or mouth...like an icon you could give to her to praise her (like candy)...lol I'm thinking about this too much.  If I could detect the insertion of USB devices I could have her sit there holding the device looking confused about it.  Once again these are all just conjecture and ideas, because I think these would be cute...but then again now I have some ideas for things to draw =3.

Added after 2 minutes:

If you want my old Wacom Graphire2 Tablet, you are welcome to it.  It has a mismatched Graphire4 stylus with it though lol.  The Graphire4 stylus is perfectly compatiable though and actually a lot better than the Graphire2 stylus.

Added after 8 minutes:

I am at work right now...I work in a Tech Support center...I have been drawing all night in between calls...I have so many ideas for new drawings now!

Well, those are nice ideas but I'm not sure if we should implement them at the first version. I would settle as greeting you at the start, displaying CPU, HDD, RAM and net statistics, and reacting to mouse movement (lack of movement or if the mouse was hovering over her), using "full body" artwork, Visual novel style (no animation except face and different poses without transicion)

Or If we were to implement movement then we should use the mini-style that C-chan proposes, which could be easily animated. Full body artwork wouldn't work as it'd be a lot of work to animate it, at least for a first version.

...

Anyway, I won't be able to do anything until maybe next monday, when my exams will be over. And even then...I told ya I'm not the most dependable guy in this place with all my absent periods :D
But I'll try to help :)

Sounds like a plan then.... ^^

My advice then would be to compile an active listing of all the postures and gestures that the OS-tan Assistant will use, so that we can start thinking of all the animation (or pseudo-animation) that will be required.

So far....

FYI, these are my previous experiments with OS-tan animation (both unfinished, I'm ashamed to say.... ^^;)

Ara...now THIS is something seriously sugoi, ne! Unfortunate that I don't have any animation or programming skills to contribute with, but I'll try all else things that i can find.

First of all...
When this was mentioned I remembered the fact that I already have a pseudo-version of this sort of thing deep down in my archives. I uploaded it on Rapidshare for you guys to be able to take a look.
http://rapidshare.com/files/54049451/rbxpver2.1a.zip
It's more of a dock than a desktop mate/helper anyways, but I thought it would be worthwhile to mention. I might have something more in my deep archives, tell me if you want to know and I'll have a look.

Anyways, if there's anything that I might be able to do I'd be happy to assist.
And also...
Quote from: "Darknight"Also, I have seen on the SOS-dan imageboard (NejinOniwa should know) desktop helpers, but I have never tried one of these, so It'd be nice to know how much animation they have and what they do. The one i gave you the link to is sort of a docked window, but it has buttons for computer shutdown and restart, and is voiced and animated much. Not a full-body view of XP-sama (it's her, if you didn't know already), but a good thing regardless. And I don't know of the SOS-DAN /img's helpers, but I have seen some Lucky Star ones over at AnimeSuki forums, though. Wouldn't surprise me if the SOS-dan had them, though, seeing as they're way bigger. I'll check their forums.

Yep, just Photoshop ^//^.  I am a hack at best though.  I can't hold a candle to a lot of the folks on here.  I just draw because it lets me express something that programming can't do alone.  I downloaded Inkscape though to give it a try.  I will post some experimentation when I have a chance.

Fufufu... Oh no, we have artistic self-deprecator.  ^.^;

Don't worry, though.... ^__^
The longer you stick around here, the more you'll realize that we don't mind how you draw as much as how OFTEN you draw.  In my opinion, someone who draws very often will do a lot more to encourage other shy artists to do the same, than someone who draws really well but may only post once or twice a year (although in fairness, breathtaking artwork helps inspire already-established artists to evolve their style).

In addition to that, you're drawing style is very damn good for a self-proclaimed "hack".  Even if I play along with the whole candle bit, it won't be long before we start coming to YOU for artistic advice.  ^^

Especially if you get acquainted with vector graphics through Inkscape....  ^.^

FYI....

*enters shameless plug mode*

...I'm starting an Inkscape tutorial that will eventually cover Anime renditions using vector graphics.  I just started and am still at the basics, but if you'd like to follow along it's available here:

Thanks, and yeah don't sweat the proportions and hands as I'll be covering that as well.  You can approach it flawlessly if you use tools, but if you intend to draw it freehand, it will take practice, practice, practice and a healthy dash of analysis.  ^__^

If you have a PDA (or iat least a small sketchpad) on you and something approximating a non-driving commute, you can probably practice sketching your own hands each day.  The Captain told that to me once and it works very well, plus it gives me ideas on how best to approach this rather sensitive topic in the tutorials so that it needn't be a scourge much longer.

For now, when you think hands,... think "WL".  ^^

Let's see...95-combat suit and OS/2 in 2006. 95-tan wallpaper, Gamma-tan and Kotonoha in 2007. And Vis-tan may be finished somewhere this year

So no, only 5 drawings in 2 years :D. And If I say that 95-combat suit its more like a test drawing than a finished drawing...

i have been checking a lot of things on os-tans, and i found the "Annex" quite interesting
it's okay, and true, in "my times" almost everybody used "che", sadly, today not many do use it, and instead use other words, usually to show what "group you do belong to", be it either the dark or gothic culture, the ones the syndicates, mafias or whatever it's said in english, influenced most, political groups, but somehow in the middle of all that the "che" as well as most of our "lunfardo" is being lost, kind of like OS/2-tan or maybe like VMS-tan, but worse *sweatdrops*

i do use it every some time, and reading it on this forum kinda cheered me up, my dad used it a lot xDDDDD

and about me checking the os-tans here is no problem

question off post -> do you know where i can find some programming language that would do it for this, "project" of this topic?
i'm not too sure yet on how much time it'd take for me, but i'd really like to take it, at least part of it, i'm not good at making cg's and the rest of the artwork

well then, wish you the best!
by the way (optional personal question) where do you live?

Quotequestion off post -> do you know where i can find some programming language that would do it for this, "project" of this topic?
i'm not too sure yet on how much time it'd take for me, but i'd really like to take it, at least part of it, i'm not good at making cg's and the rest of the artwork

Technically that question is ON topic.  ^^;
When developing something like this, the best approach is to make this as cross platform as possible, so consider Java, Python, Ruby and so forth.

We can try and help you with the art aspect, just as long as you can really get along with this project.  However, PLEASE KEEP IT SIMPLE.  Otherwise, if you burn yourself out before finishing, we'll be back where we started.  ^___^;

Quoteby the way (optional personal question) where do you live?

Oh right,... my location is translated as "Binteji Renmei" so I live at the "Vintage Federation".  ^_________^

Hi everyone! I've found this Vis-tan (http://abrgomez.deviantart.com/art/Vis-tan-65065569) a few days ago. Ever since I've settled her on my desktop I had the same idea!

I think a version for Vista could easily be a gadget, thats when you undock one it can be any size:
I think they are powerful enough, even for animation.
Will allow transparency.  This one (http://img215.imageshack.us/img215/743/vistanpngzu3.png) has transparency and that looks really cool!
Gadgets seem safer, so people will be happier with installing it.

Here's what she could do:
blink
sneeze -> blush
wink -> smile
wink -> blush
look down (realise she's almost naked) -> blush
point out a finger and display info in a bubble
smile
check her hair with one hand
put her arms in front and just along her body (alternative pose)
put her arms on her chest (alternative pose)

all of the above doesn't require interaction.
At later stage could add these:
greet user on start up
wave good bye on shut down
look bored when user away for 10 minutes
squat after 10 more minutes
start to cry after 10 more minutes
express happiness when user is back

I wouldn't expect intercation with cursor, because it feels more personal when she looks at the user rather that pays attention to the cursor.

Hope we could get this guy (http://abrgomez.deviantart.com/gallery/)
to help us.

Actually...
If I'm not totally mistaken, that's Darknight-kun. Look through the memberlist.
Now to convince him to do some work...well that might be a bit of a challenge -w-;
Anyway, since you seem to be a new guy, head over to the Member Introduction Thread, to get yourself properly glompage'd to death, beaten with a stick and caught in a haxx'd pokeball (aka introduced to the community ^-^; ), and then we'll see - this project has been a hard one to start, hasn't it...

I kind of got interested, even though I prefer to stay at the sidelines until I see this is getting somewhere.

Yeah, that's our resident Batman.  ^___^
There was a sighting of him over at Members Introduction not but a few hours ago.  You might just be able to catch him (bring a net just in case).  ^v^

When he told us he was going to go back to his Online Multiplayer battleship thingie, I didn't think he seriously meant he was gonna stay there indefinitely.  ^V^;

I'm really interested in this project! XP-TAN WANT. ^_^
If needed, I'm studying voice acting. I can do cute voices and MANLY VOICES. This needs to happen. This project might also require sugary foods. I can bake an amazing batch of cookies. ;034

It'd be a larger project, since it not only requires image work but also coding AND voice acting. Now, that's not a problem with an organized team, is it? I suggest we go into the IRC and discuss more details there.

HAHA OH WOW

The idea of making it a windows vista/google dekstop/yahoo sounds interesting. Though I have no idea on how those things are made.
I had the idea of making her mostly like a visual novel/eroge game interface, with some shots of the character changing expressions and from time to time changing positions, but not completely animated.

On my own defense I'll say that I haven't forgot about this, and about a month ago I started sketching some designs of XP-tan. But I have been busy to continue working in it :/

That is very nice VonDaab, and yes after blinking a few times naturally she looks like she gets all sleepy and shuts off (literally).  Very cute.  ^^

I definitely would suggest keeping the animation as small as possible -- the simpler the characters are, the faster they can be done and the more animation can be packed into the Desktop Assistant.  That, and of course there's still the programming aspect to take care of as well.

This sounds like an excellent project that can get a few of you involved in some major and invigorating team effort, so I do wish you guys the best with this.

Ok, I started making Vista sidebar gadgets.
http://gallery.live.com/liveItemDetail.aspx?li=15b12c25-b2da-455b-9c62-6981c3a0f2ce Actually its not that hard. They are html pages that support transparent pngs and can be updated with any frequency with javascript. I'll try to put together a gadget with Vis-tan some time this or next week. It would be great if Darknight could make a few frames with Vis-tan blinking. I think 2-3 frames will be enough. If this works and Darknight has some free time we might have our very own fully functional Vis-tan very soon! Though only Vista compatible... Lets give it a try?

Finally version 1.0 of legendary Vis-tan sidebar gadget is ready!
http://rapidshare.com/files/121510557/Vistan.gadget.html
When you install it, its not going to display properly. Instead there will be a white line on the sidebar. Just close it and go to the "add gadget" window. You can add it from there. It will display properly now. Just drag it away from the sidebar and put it in such a way that her legs are behind the taskbar and the finger is right on the taskbar. Enjoy.

AWESOME :O
Good job.

Pretty, If I say myself :P

Though, I think it's a bit too large, it doesn't fit in my screen completely (or takes a really large space of the screen =/).Maybe you could add an option for choosing between a large and a small resolution.

Sorry for not being of help with the animation, I didn't saw your message =/.

Now, for the ones who don't have Vista, this is how it looks @ V1.0:
(http://img74.imageshack.us/img74/5994/screenshotwm5.th.jpg) (http://img74.imageshack.us/my.php?image=screenshotwm5.jpg)
Title: OS-Tan Animated Desktop Assistant Project
Post by: Zilka on June 10, 2008, 04:41:55 pm
I was trying to adjust it for my resolution and my resolution is 1680x1050.
(http://img77.imageshack.us/img77/2208/vistandskgn7.th.jpg) (http://img77.imageshack.us/my.php?image=vistandskgn7.jpg)
I'll try to make a version for your resolution soon. I'll only make a separate custom version for a particular resolution because there's a small problem with legs. If you allow some space above the gadget, the next time you start your computer Vista will automatically move it up so that legs are no longer behind the task bar. The only way around that is to make it occupy all screen height. So in my case all the space you see above her head is actually a part of the gadget, just invisible.

Small version of Vistan 1.0 for 1280x800 screen:
http://rapidshare.com/files/121733917/Vistan.gadget.html

And an update for the big version. Fixed a little bug and adjusted for 1680x1050 screen:
http://rapidshare.com/files/121735699/Vistan.gadget.html

Do not allow both versions to be installed at the same time. If you remove one and install another right away you might get a weird result. Restarting computer will fix that. I'll try to look into why this happens.

Enjoy!!!

Artists wanted, eh? I see that the thread starter isn't active anymore, but I'll speak anyway.
Here is my second attempt on drawing a girl:
http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd4/ShinzuiUindo/XP-tan/DSC01695.jpg
I could color her and animate her face (and maybe arms and some slight body movements). I've done such things before:
http://shinzuiuindo.deviantart.com/gallery/#Nihlathak-Emoticons
But I don't know of any programs, exept "Screen Mate Builder", which is shareware and does absolutely nothing exept giving a .gif file a ball-from-break-the-blocks-game-like movements.

...so, what do you think?
Title: OS-Tan Animated Desktop Assistant Project

Version 1.1 ready!
Big version here:
http://rapidshare.com/files/123660467/Vistan.gadget.html
Small here:
http://rapidshare.com/files/123660800/Vistan.gadget.html

Now you don't have to worry about screen resolution. Just choose which size of Vis-tan you want and the program will adjust itself to fit your screen. Also running one version after another is ok now, as promised. Still bad idea to have them both installed.
Completely rewrote the engine. Now I can change the body during program execution as well as draw things on top (eyes for example). This is about as much as I can do myself until I start getting some new graphics.

I'm very happy to hear this! Thank you!!!
I'm aware that there hasn't been any progress with Vis-tan for some time. Basically I'm waiting for Darknight to show up. I thought he will be back in August, but he hasn't showed up yet. Hope he'll be back determined to help our desktops fill with cuteness!
I was thinking about having a trigger for a user being away from keyboard for say 10 minutes. Screensaver and Skype for example are able to do this no problem, but I haven't found a way yet to do this with sidebar gadget. People at Microsoft are lazy as usual, suggest to look for screensaver showing up in the processes, but thats just stupid, I want the gadget to do something instead of screensaver. Just thought there could be someone passing by who would happen to know another way to monitor AFK for sidebar gadget.

Thank you so much for the sidebar gadget, it is so awesome, it makes my desktop feel so much lively! Just wanted to point out two things with mine that happened. First one is that mine snaps to the bottom of the screen i think so it cuts off around middle of her hand down (not that its a problem just wanted to point it out), second is that for some reason I cannot have vista-tan and other gadgets on the sidebar at the same time, she takes up her own sidebar section for some reason. Any idea as to what is causing this or if there is a quick fix? Thanks for your hard work, it is greatly appreciated ^^ and I hope things continue into the future.

* Anime PC Meter (http://ostan-collections.net/topic-908.html)
* System Animator (http://ostan-collections.net/topic-909.html) (highly recommended)

Hi hicamajig! I'm happy you like it. You shouldn't leave it in the sidebar,  but drag in on the desktop instead. After all I'm sure you have something useful to display on the sidebar. Vistan is supposed to be an interactive part of the desktop, or rather the wallpaper. I recommend you have a look at the screenshots in this thread. Also there's 2 versions of thuis gadget for different resolutions. Small for 800 pixels high and above, and big for 1050 pixels high and above. Vistan adjust herself to the resolution so that her finger is right on the top of the taskbar and you don't seea gap where her legs are cut off. Hope this helps.

I think the time has come to do something about this. Darknight has been missing for like half a year already. I'm pretty sure he didn't show up here or on deviant-art. Actually does anyone know if he is registered on any other forums or social networks and if he was showing up there. I'm kinda worried about him. Maybe they took him to the mexican army? Is it tough there?

Also does anyone want to be the main artist for this or a parallel project?

@AnimeTheme - I checked out your gadgets a few days ago (well minus the animator which i am just trying now since I have time again), they are really cool! I especially like the calendar :D.

@Zilka - It would be  pretty sweet if it did pick up again! and ya I had already tried both sizes (big one being better due to large screen resolution) and apparently detaching it from sidebar (which i didn't think of for some reason) fixes both problems XD. But for me I kind of like it attached more because I don't actually use my sidebar often so it looks nice and makes it seem like the sidebar isn't there.

Edit: Just tested out the system animator, it's fricken sweet!! I think I may have to start using my sidebar again since I actually have good gadgets now >.< Thanks to the both of you.

Recent post is a litle OFF TOPIC i think!!
How about the project that deusprogrammer mention in the first page???

THIS PROJECT IS A GREAT IDEA!!

It's been 2 years ago though, what about the progress of this project??

I think that IDEA is not imposible to implement!!!

For the programmer, we have deusprogrammer on it!
For the images and animation, i'm sure someone in this forum can do something about that.
For the os-tan trait, we can use AI algorithm and a litle database so that she can learn something from us.
For the os-tan's cute voice, we can use a software called vocaloid to do this! I have the software, so maybe i can do this one!

I found a freeware similiar to this idea in this forum, the name is Apricot. You can download it here, its free... and the character is the cute Hatsune Miku!
http://www.apricotan.net/download.html

so... everyone on it?? How about we continue this project and post it on sourceforge.net?? I'll do my best to help!!!

The initial topic has detoured inmensively lol. Thou Deusprogramer is nowhere active. If we would ever do this, yes we would be able to use like the Naru window watcher mini progam that changes skins and outfits. Don't remember were I found it but I have it. Might probably upload it on the net for you guys if you want it. I need to know a reliable safe site that hosts files. But yes we coun do with infinity's like chibi versions of the os tan hdesktop helper. and Naru's skin changer. So the same animations can be done for a beta version but you can choose the outfit and hair style that way you can dress the tan like XP/95?ME/etc and have all the tans with minimal effort in animations. I have said it before I suck at drawing and thou I have graduated in as few as yesterday June 9 2009 from computer and information administration I do not how to program yet on my own. *Shame* I must suicide, this will help my lack of talent... Nah j/k. So yeah that might be a good idea. We could use ballon tips to show text basic text and do basic animation for now like Welcome "Hello Master/User" Shutdown "Goodbye/Have a nice day/I'll be waiting/See you soon/I'll miss you/Come back soon" Ask when deleting a file "Are you sure?/Is this no longer important?/Want me to get rid of this?" Animations during time like "Are you doing well? It's nice to be with you/Thanks for giving me attention/Can I help with that?" Iddle mode "Were are you? I'm missing you/I feel alone? Are you there? Moving copying files "Done/File managing succeeded/Need to move or copy this?/Let me help you with that." Device Detection "I'll check it for you/Something new appeared/I detected a device..." Stuff like that. I'd say it sounds great. just need some animation basic frames and basic programing except the part of detecting OS activities like devices and data management. Just giving ideas, Don't know if this project is abandoned. If so let me know to not post ideas for something that might not really be at all in the future. I'll feel sad trying to gice CPR to a dead body lol. ;018 ;012

Ohh also is the animetheme site ok? i am not able to download anything from there. it redirects to a white page saying if I know how to install this and the click here and keeps looping me back and forth between the same pages. Must have been that the server had problems returning the page this time it loaded correctly.

Yes you could say that but the spectrum analyzer does not work at all. It says it needs some sound card. My XP doesn't use any cards. Her motherboard is empty. The only card there is her 512 mb RAM card, no other cards are there. That means I won't be able to enjoy the spectrum analyzer at all?

Well, you don't need a sound "card", but you need a sound-processing device that supports DirectX.

Check and see if this is the version of DirectX you have already installed.

The fact that you can see everything but the bars means you have at least the basic things installed and working properly. Unlike Vista, the XP version of this gadget needs to specify a sound source to monitor. Check your XP volume control options and make sure you have some valid recording sources there.

This is Madobe Nanami who works as a 7-tan. The program is super slow and is basically eating up all CPU cycles. Apparently a refurbished version of 95 mascot. If you don't want to download it here's a video:

Actually its way slower for me than it looks in the video. Tried compatibility but still veeery slow.

Added after 14 hours 2 minutes:

I just ran it at work, and its not that slow really. And this computer is weaker. Weird.

The program is called "Sora" (v0.75). I have just spent a few minutes on it so I dunno much about it at this point. Roughly speaking, it is a tool that allows you to manipulate a 2D image in a 2.5D form by mapping the image to a 3D wire frame model. But this Sora tool in its current form is not very usable. It is slow, and somewhat undocumented.

Hmm... I see that this project is stuck at the graphics stage, so why not doing the coding part first and add the graphics later when it's more complete? Is there any software that creates an interactive thingie on the desktop that can do various stuff without starting from scratch? The only thing I can think of is Yahoo! Widgets and I already asked a question in answers.yahoo if it's possible to convert a widget into a standalone application. And even if someone is able to make a complete .sora file how are you going to make any use of it?
Title: OS-Tan Animated Desktop Assistant Project
Post by: Zilka on December 30, 2009, 03:30:51 pm
What's the point? The most challenging part here is the art. Frames and frames of animation. Unless we are talking about what was done with 7-tan. I don't know much about it, but its something like stretching a texture on a bubble. Doesn't look that great and very limited. Can imitate head bobbing, but not much help when we try to do gestures. Even if we put out source code for the entire thing(if say it was finished, and it isn't), what would happen next?
More importantly it is impossible. You need graphics to see if the new code works.

I stumbled upon this today and I couldn't help but think of this thread when I saw it. It has a good chunk of tans but the software is in Japanese and I'm pretty sure you have to buy it, you can download a demo of Me-tan holding a sign.

This appears to be the developers site for it: http://qruqru.sakura.ne.jp/download.html

did you join just to post this? not faulting you, but "couldn't help but think of this thread" implies you've been lurking, lol. come join us, we don't bite. :3

as for the mascots, the english version of the site only has a wallpaper pack and a couple doujins (including the cursed one by Deja-Vu >>; ), which makes sense, since the devs likely didn't want to go through the work of translating the entire program to english, meaning we'll likely never see it here. :\

upon looking at the dev site, i can see that the program is the same as one originally made for apricot, a mascot program. we have the ME-tan one for download here, i believe, though it's buggy and hard to get going. according to the site with the pack the ME and 2k ones respond to voice, and all of them send off little messages in the form of pop-up bubbles. you can appearantly change what they say by editing the code, and if you set it up properly, it can be used as an rss feed.

given the complexity of translating the program and the fact that it hasn't been updated since 08', it's unlikely we'll ever see it in english. but hey, the ME-tan is already up on site, if we could get the others, that'd be kinda cool. it's only about 11 bucks, anyway. :0

Title: Re: OS-Tan Animated Desktop Assistant Project
Post by: winduko on March 04, 2015, 05:56:34 am
To do what you are doing right now? I honestly can't see why it wouldn't be fine.

After all, if you share the link to the place where you can look at the application, and decide if you want to buy it, that means that more people will see it, and therefore more potential buyers.

As long as you aren't giving it to us for free while they're selling it, and merely giving us the link, they won't mind. Hell, depending on how many of us have a lack of adblock and if there are ads on the site to begin with, they might appreciate people sharing links.

as far as i'm concerned post the program. they're making money off of other sources and the bulk of us pirate here. the doujins we've posted initially cost money, but you think that matters now? please.
Title: Re: OS-Tan Animated Desktop Assistant Project
Post by: winduko on March 04, 2015, 06:49:35 pm
Yeah, that's also true.

Actually, from the looks of it, they are bigger than I thought.

My opinions on pirating a specific thing depends on these factors:

1. Can I get the thing easily? (being a minor, the answer is practically always no)
2. How easily is the company making money? (the things I am interested in result in the answer almost always being yes)

We, with most of us here being Westerners, can't get the doujins easily, if at all, without the translations. Therefore, I won't bat an eye at that.

Honestly, before I found out there was a English link, I would have loved to have someone pirate it (I even installed a copy of Japanese Windows 2000 in case this happens, and before anyone asks, it was pirated (https://winworldpc.com/product/windows-nt-2000)). And yeah, they probably are making money off of other things.

Edit:

I also patched it up.

I've used Winworld for Windows NT 3.X experiments, great place.
Let me know how the program works for you guys and what OS you're running, I'll see if I can patch any bugs that occur.
