Good, good... Touhou is good for you! ^^

So it's not that unknown that I had thought...

I'm a newb to the Touhou stuff, so any info for a newb will be greatly appreciated. :3  I'm still getting used to the game. (currently playing perfect cherry blossom)

I'll make this a touhou thread, so you can talk about touhou anything. ^^

Okay, some links, first:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Touhou (Wikipedia link, good for basic information)

http://pooshlmer.com/touhouwiki/index.php?title=Main_Page (The Wiki dedicated to the series, very rich in information)

http://www.shrinemaiden.org/forum/index.php (A forum dedicated to the series)

http://www.hongfire.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=148 (HongFire's Touhou club section)

I hope that's enough for starters...

When I discovered Touhou, it was a fantastic experience!
Great games, not too long (good if you have to study ;) ), magnificent music, an enormous amount of great high-level doujins...
But they are not only pure high quality: they are also really really difficult!
And this is really important! As a gamer, I don't like the lack of challenges in the last generation games.. it's difficult to find something really hard to finish, but at the same time, really entertaining! Well, Touhou is difficult, very difficult, but entertaining!

So try it and spread the word! ^^

It's always good to know if there are more and more Touhou players! ^^ Even though I'm not a great gamer (1 continue clearing is difficult), but I still like the series very much because of the musics, the great variety of characters, the well-made world, the doujins... hard to say it all ^^ It has a different feeling for me than most of the other shoot 'em ups.

I think Touhou's great. I have all the games that have come out including some of the games not created by ZUN himself like Touhou Hana or Marisa Land or Super Marisa etc. etc.

I haven't beat all of them yet, just Phantasmagoria of Flower View and Immaterial and Missing Power, but I'll be happy to help walk you through those or the others to the extent I know or help you out with it. Especially if you're playing as Sakuya.

Okay....i really love the Touhou dojin and after i watch some MAD video and several touhou video on youtube.....i really want to play the game....

The problem are :
1. I don't have credit card (if i have to buy it), and i don't know where i can  buy it...
2. In my place, japan pc games are very rare. The common japan games are  Hentai simulation games....
3. If i have to download it (if it's free), i don't know where i can get that.......

SO, if anyone can help me find touhou games, please help me.......

EDITED :
I have solve the problem, a member in this forum gave the link to me just a while ago....now, i'm trying to beat Shoot the Bullet game.....have some tips or tricks ? I'm new in playing touhou game and i haven't even clear stage 1 since i don't know how to shoot...-_-

Yes, side games are really funny (and challenging, like a Touhou game should be =) ), Super Marisa World makes good references to the old Mario games... :)

Heh, a Sakuya player. =D In IaMP, I use Sakuya too (she was the first char I ever used in a Touhou game, because IaMP was my first Touhou game).

In Shoot the Bullet press Z to take a picture and C to focus and charge up the camera faster. Standard controls for a Touhou game. No player spell cards to make use of X, though.

Ah, yes, I certainly am a proud Sakuya player. Nothing like barraging an opponent with torrents of knives. ^-^ It seems a lot of people do start out with IaMP, but I started right with the old C64 Highly Responsive to Prayers and tried them out all in order.

GAAAH !!!!
I'm playing embodiment of scarlet devil and i haven't finish it....

Japanese people sure are crazy....how did they finish such a difficult game like this.....bullet (danmaku) everywhere !!! You will need a high concentration ability to dodge all the bullet enemies shoot at you.

In EoSD i play normal and.....i  always stuck at stage 5 when i face sakuya....actually, i'm run out of continue every time i clear stage 4.......

If there's any pro player around here.....please give use -the noobs- some useful tips or trick.....

Well, Touhou is hard, especially if you're not prepared for more intense danmaku patterns. And don't forget that most Touhou games give you the good ending only if you can clear the game in one continue... (sometimes you need to do it at least on Normal, like in EoSD - that's the reason why I couldn't see the good ending of it. With using continues, I probably could clear the game, but this will end up in a disappointing bad ending...
Sorry, I can't help you, but on the forums I mentioned earlier, you can find very advanced players, they could help.

Post by: Nafoi on June 16, 2007, 10:40:58 AM
Uhm.. for the beginners I suggest training with Imperishable Night, in easy mode (but if you do this, Tewi and Reisen will probably laugh at you... those who know the IOSYS will probably understand what I'm saying :P).
Embodiment of Scarlet Devil is probably the most difficult one...

Another good advice is to begin with Homing Style characters (Reimu), so you can concentrate in dodging, without worrying for what you are shooting at.

at the beginning touhou is REALLY HARD, especially the 4th and 5th screen of every game (I still remember how hard I was pwned in the 4th screen of Perfect Cherry Blossom.... and I'm NOT talking about the Prismrivers!).
The best advice is to train! Try to finish the game, even continuing in easy mode (at the beginning it's really easy to die ^^")
And train in the 4th and 5th screens a lot!

Day after day you'll notice that you're getting better ^^

True true touhou is extremely hard in the beginning. just won imperishable nights on lunatic with Marisa without losing a life *although it did took a while*
and now im of to try and actually survive Phatasmagoria of Flower View on lunatic using a sakuya and Remilia combo.

and also i heard a rumor that some1 was porting  imperishable nights to the ds, homebrew though hope its true.

Post by: redrackham on June 21, 2007, 05:21:27 AM
@Nafoi
Ummm....i try to play Imperishable Night but.....damn ! It's more difficult than EoSD.
In EoSD i'm able to read the pattern of enemy's danmaku attack....but in Imperishable Night....i can't since it's more intense and almost no room to dodge the danmaku.
In EoSD i usually lost a live when i lost my concentration but in Imperishable Night, i lost a live because of panic -__- after seeing danmaku filling up my computer screen (like when facing Marisa (using Reimu) or when facing Reisen.....)

But i still struggling to finish both (EoSD and Imperishable Night) now.

Btw.....what the mean of Graze in both game ? I notice that in Imperishable Night, you can move through enemies' danmaku without getting killed (up to some extent) but  you can't do it in EoSD....is it 'Graze' that i metioned before ?
Title: Touhou
Post by: Nafoi on June 22, 2007, 08:15:25 AM
To "graze" means to fly near the enemy danmaku. It adds points to your total score.

In touhou games either you and the bullets have a "hitbox".
You can see your character's hitbox when you focus (to focus you have to keep pressed the shift button).
In EoSD you can't see your hitbox, so you'll have to understand where it is.
Reimu's hitbox is smaller than the one of the other characters, so it's easier to use.

The bullets have a hitbox too: you can be killed only if you touch the bullet's hitbox with your hitbox. usually bigger bullets can be grazed more effectively since their hitbox is a lot smaller than them.

For me Imperishable Night is easier than EoSD (I usually play in lunatic mode,  but it should be easier in easy mode too)..
Marisa is surely tough, but reisen it's actually pretty easy: just stay away from her and you should be safe: most of her bullets slow down near the end of the screen and are easy to dodge (but don't try to take the bonus points when you finish one of her lifebars or you'll be caught by her next bullets :P).

Plus, in Imperishable Night, if you are caught by a bullet, you have some time (a little instant :P) to press the bomb button and save your life (sacrificing two bombs). In EoSD you can't do this.

You could say that Imperishable Night is easier because the innovations in the game help you staying alive :P

Plus in the options of Imperishable Night, you can set the number of your lives per continue up to seven, and this helps A LOT :D (but try not to get addicted to the high number of lives ;) )

Well, I feel like bringing this thread out from the depths. ^^;

I've been playing EoSD again lately.
I know it's one of the harder ones, but I have this desire to do things in order. XD; And the challenge is much appreciated.

I'm trying to clear EoSD all in one continue on Normal.  Farthest I've gone is the beginning of stage 5.
I blame "China" for killing my stock of lives before going into the library that is stage 4. I know how to clear her stage strategy-wise, but my precision with the keyboard controls isn't as great as I would like it to be.

Actually you can.  It's just IN gives you way more time to do so than EoSD does. The wiki says you have to bomb within 0.1 seconds after getting hit in EoSD, while IN gives you 0.9 seconds.  Also in EoSD, there is no bomb penalty.

I've done it before in EoSD, but you have to be lucky.  I've played IN a few times, and yeah, it's WAY easier to counter-bomb.

Edit: I see that the EoSD death-bombing applies to all games from TH06 onwards.  In IN, the extra feature is that from 0.1 to 0.9 seconds after being hit you can still counter-bomb, but with penalties.

Perhaps a good call, to avoid flooding just about EVERY section with touhou-isms, let us now proceed to tell of our failings or successes with Danmaku in this thread.

For my part, I actually started off with Subterranean Animism, with its strange bombing system - thus I've never really gotten the card bombing around my head, so I instinctively avoid using bombs 90% of the time...and when I DO start using them, it's usually too late anyway -w-;

EoSD is strange. I always found Meiling pretty simple, but my worst fear was - strangely enough - Cirno's first non-spell. Yep. Stupid as it sounds (lol), but I always find it extremely hard to dodge it properly - even now I usually go around it and fling out to the sides to throw their aim off.

I think I managed to get all the way to Patchy once, but she slaughtered what lives I had left so brutally it wasn't even comical.

On IN: Reisen is extremely frustrating, but that's probably because I lose my nerve completely while going through the stage to get to her (TEWI YOU ASSHOLE, also FUCKING_RABBITS). What I've found, however, is that playing Shoot the Bullet is a quite marvelous training method to learn how to graze and stuff.

Anyways. UFO is crazy. PCB is surprisingly easy, to a part...
...until Youmu comes in and screws shit up good.

So: as of yet I've never gotten further than Stage 5 (normal) without using a continue (PCB/IN, hard as well on PCB) and little further with them. There seems to be a high gap in between the 4th and 5th stages in many cases.

Never played easy mode, and never will, out of sheer pride. -.-

2007? Really, I started this that long ago?

haha, well, since my last posting, I STILL haven't been able to 1cc EoSD.  And as usual, once I use a continue, my skills just become crap at that point for some reason.  (so I still haven't cleared it)

Although, nowadays I'm able to clear Meiling and Patchy will little loss of life.  It's that accursed maid that kills me so. many. times.  By the time I get to Remilia, I'm dangling by a thread with a life or two.
Then I die.

So far most of my deaths have occurred in Sakuya's stage. heh

Yeah, Youmu came out of nowhere...

And I've played UFO a bit... Couldn't get past Stage 3. lol...

As far as Touhou goes, I'm more immersed in the community than I am the games, although I will play them for a good time waster and such. I prefer the PC-98 series over the Windows for some reason, perhaps because I was exposed to PC98 alot more than Windows and have thus grown attachted to it. Meh.

Meh, Christina's version was awful IMHO.  But them again, most dubbed versions of japanese songs are awful.  Miku's "Take It Easy!!!" for example. *shivers*

Heh, maybe I've been listening to too much J-Pop and Autotune. I'm all desensitized to it.  Or maybe I'm concentrating too much on the lyrics. Often, the lyrics translation will make a song 10x better for me.  I thought that was well done in CV's version.

Welp, in any case, in the past few weeks I've been just taking in EastNewSound's stuff, and fell in love with this one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S2pQtkFaEv0

Hey... Hey?

I know this was... all covered in this first page of the thing. I mean, the thread. Forums. Whatever. I dunno...

Anyway, um. For those of us who hate clicking the mouse, can someone give an explanation about what Touhou is? Well, rather, clarify a random explanation?

Is it an online game? What genre? Ehh... I dunno. I use Touhou backgrounds on Izumi, my laptop. It sounds cool, from what everyone says. And the characters are kawaii. But I can't find out too much about it, other than the regions where it was released and the... um. Stuff.

Touhou wiki is good for finding specific information, but I've found, not so good at introducing new people to it.

I've been mulling in my head a series of articles that's essentially "Touhou for the uninitiated"

I haven't really written anything concrete, but I think this is a good starting point.

Touhou is a series of shoot em ups (shmups) that fall into the "bullet hell" subcategory of shmups.  The source material are the games created by Team Shanghai Alice, whose only known member is ZUN. ZUN is the programmer, artist, and writer of these games.

He releases these games as a doujin game.  He does not enforce copyright in the slightest. The Touhou fanbase is largely centered on fan-made material. There are probably terabytes worth of touhou doujin music out there by now. You'll find a ton of doujinshi and and doujin games as well.  These allow for multiple fan interpretations of the characters and stories.  They run the gamut from moe moe touhou, to srs bsns touhou.  Touhou can be anything you wish it to be, really.

If you have more questions, feel free to ask. I want to flesh out these thoughts of mine, write these articles, and maybe help remove misconceptions that some people have about touhou.

A question: Is it possible to appreciate Touhou fully, without ever playing the games?

Usually I think a person needs experience with a video game to appreciate the fandom surrounding it, but Touhou seems to have such a HUGE fanbase and so many fan comics, artworks, etc, that it seems like you could know a lot about the characters, setting and story without ever touching the actual game. Y/N?
Title: Re: Touhou
Post by: Dr. Kraus on May 14, 2011, 01:14:17 PM
Y

but I recommend you play at least one touhou game (Other than the fighting games) so you don't meet a touhou fan that goes "Wat is ur favorite game!?" and you end up having to say "Never played."

Hmmm... not sure how to respond to this new "this thread is dead" warning, but I guess since this was only buried by one page, it shouldn't be too much of a problem.  I was actually planning on starting a new Troubleshooting thread for this, but this seems more convenient, as I highly doubt a new thread will actually go anywhere.

Anyway, I just installed this Touhou spinoff - Koumajou Densetsu: Scarlet Symphony, and I'm having trouble getting to run properly.  The game looks fine, everything works, it's just really laggy.  I've tried google looking for a means of solving this problem myself, but I can't find anything about problems with the game.  I've read that it lags occasionally for some people, but I just started the game and no matter where I go, it's just painfully slow (well not that bad, but slower than a Castlevania clone should be).  What's worse is I don't really know how to find out what's causing the problem, as it's not my computer.  I can tell that this computer should more than meet the specs to play this, but for some reason, it just can't.  Has anyone else experienced this issue?

Necroposting! Ha ha!

Last night, I 1cc'd (One credit cleared/no continues) Mystic Square one easy. Oh, how I remember when I had to use 2 continues against the 4th stage bosses and would run out on the 5th boss! I can also clear it on normal but have to use continues.

Now to 1cc Lotus Land Story on normal. The last time I played it, I was soooooooo close to doing so, but lost my last life at the very end of the final boss battle! AAARGH! If I had been able to avoid getting hit for one or two more seconds...

(on another note, MS on easy and LLS on normal are of comparable difficulty, but you have to clear LLS on normal or harder without continues to get the good ending)

@Cockle: Damn! I can't 1cc any of the games on normal (though I've come close!!) let alone hard and certainly not lunatic! How did he do that? Does he just have mad skills, or did he practice a lot? Or both?

I have played some of the games on lunatic for the heck of it, and amazingly on my second try with that on SoEW, I almost cleared the game, only running out of continues halfway through the final boss!

haha, that link was my old Touhou thread in General Computers and Gaming. Feel free to take this conversation there if you like.

Well, I don't have any doujinshi links handy, and I'd have to think about that a bit anyway (I'll have that for you tonight, if I remember ^^; ). Some of the doujinshi out there might require some prior knowledge in order to really appreciate it, so I need to find more stand-alone examples (of which there are many).

Having said that, I can give you youtube links to videos and music. Keep in mind that ALL of these are doujin products created by fans.

You know what, I'm finally going to post something here after all.  Here's Brainscratch's commentary on Tohouvania 2!  Well, part 1 at least.

Here's a bit of fanart as well to go along with it.

Just in case you can't read the first text box: "Good job Sakuya.  I always wondered what a man was."

I feel bad for all of them.  Especially Ryan's friend.

I've been playing a Touhou clone for Android. Does that count?

Touhou is a series of games, primarily in the vertical scrolling shooter/bullet hell genre of games.
So unless it actually was Touhou, then no.

That would be like saying "I've never played Street Fighter, but I've played Tekken! Does that count?"

That said, Touhou has the added complication that there are mountains upon mountains of fanmade games of many different genres, and since those are arguably just as valid as the games by ZUN, well... the only criteria at this point is whether or not it had Touhou characters in it.

Yeah, the creator admits it's an homage to Touhou, but I'd be inclined to think of it as a Touhou fan-game due to a number of ... familiar ... faces.

Although their names are never mentioned, the playable character is Tewi, and the opponents are Chen, Nitori, Sanae, Medicine Melancholy, Daiyousei (I believe) and Rumia.
