I... it varies. To be honest, I have no idea what it is right now... Wireless connection has confused me a little: there seem to be fewer chances to see what the heck is going on... Hmmm

It's just to have a global idea anyway, with 1MB and more, i consider you got a fast line myself.

"Problem" is people with 56 and less. If there are too many of those i'll make some alternate templates for them. (problem is a way to speak... didn't find better atm - don't take it bad :p )

Heh, cheers Fedora-Tan. Score: 1.6Mb download - not being ripped off as much as I suspected! Not so happy with the 0.2Mb upload but meh, that's always much less than the download speed, obviously.

I have 1Mb in upload (yes, with 20Mb download that's what i call asynchronous ^^; )
Theorically. With that site it only shows 0.85Mb, which is not that bad.

If i could have "just" 5Mb download and 5Mb upload, i'd prefer honnestly.

Still, with your 1:20 upload/download ratio, my 1:8 ratio doesn't seem so unbalanced.

Nah, seriously, I gecha. It's like you said about OSs; it's gotta match what you need. I don't need 5Mb, you probably couldn't get by on much less.

Mine's pretty mediocre, 1.5Mbit both ways.  SHDSL connection.    (I'm not paying the bill, so that's why I hang on to it for now.)   But a faster connection isn't something I'd turn down of course.  Guess I gotta get around to it soon.

My connection depends on where I am. If the speed drops below 1mbps then I'm probably in Zinjiang or some other armpit location and won't be checking os-tan collections, anyways.

Theoretically mine's a 100 mbps connection... in practice, due to congestion (since mine's a cellphone network-based internet connection), average speed is around 20-30 mbps.

Mine was 256k/128k. My ISP is shared speed. So it could be slower if a lot of people use at the same time. And after THAT earthquake in Taiwan, browsing speed for int'l sites was decreased. But It's ok when I browse here. ^ ^

My download speed is 1319 kbps, and upload is 325. That's from NY server, the closest.

Ah, that one. It gave me some 9601 down and 2600 down, but that's bullshit since I - when using DC - have both uploads and downloads as high as 1.2 megabytes per second. So the speedtest is a liar. You fail, speedtest.

Have you considered the converse, perhaps DC is lying? Besides, the test is for average speed, not absolute maximum.

Lying DC is impossible, since that would mean it is downloading/uploading files slower than indicated. Which is a LIE since i know for sure that i can open avis the second after they're dl-d, for an example. So DC lying is a no-no. My DC-tan does not lie!!!

lol I am in Iraq with a crapy connection, however it's the middle of the day on my day off so there probly arnt but a few people on atm.  I will have to try this out in the evening for a good laugh but atleast atm the net is running alright with.

859 ms latency
1149 ks/s down
15 kb/s up

when i test again at about 6-7pm tonight I would will bet just about anything that my speeds get mesured in the bytes per second =)

over all from what I can tell of this site it does seem to run at fairly reasonable speeds, the larger pictures that people place in there sigs give me problems but I am used to that by now.

Well, in that case I would recommend to switch off images and load only selected ones. Every browser can do something like that.

for Konqueror it's under 'Web behaviour' and for FF in preferences.

Plus, unless things have changed,   the KBR computer centers dont have FF Loaded.. hell they usualy dont even have the major IM programs installed.  And even if they did, messing with settings is a no-no

hehe thankfully we arnt stuck using the MWR computers we have internet in our CHU's.  It's a bit expensive considering what we are getting, however I would rather pay for crapy internet rather than go and use the MWR computers which are missing keys and have strict time limits

Having a fast connection isn't all fun and games, though. ^.^; Faster connections means that spyware and all the above have faster access, too. Of course, that's less of a risk with the right anit-spyware programs and such, but hey. It can be a downright pain at times. >.> And trust me, I've been there way more times than I care to admit...

Yeah, I sorta came to that conclusion the other day when I had one of my friends sware up and down about how much better than my desktop. I just grinned and bore it. As much as switching my OS would seem great and alleviate me of that problem, I'm still just a Windows guy at heart. ^^; That's like an invitation for disaster, isn't it?

Anyway, still. I love my download speed. Downloaded that Mugen game off the downloads in a matter of minutes.

Wow, I should have taken that speed test BEFORE I voted. I got a much better score than what I thought it should be (I thouht around 300kbps, but the test said 4631kbps). Are you sure that test is accurate?

My dad's computer in the front room.

It usually bottoms out at 5mbps-10mbps depending on time of day, and spikes on the odd day.

I seem to get spiking too. It seems to happen when there's less people in my neighborhood using the internet. (like when they're having a party a couple houses over) My connection is usually around 10-12 mbps.

Got about 1700 K downspeed and 466k up but thats because im on a cheapo internet connection (Cable).
But if I open DC my browsing completely goes to hell... Doesn't show on the speedtest though...strange

Since WhoIs.com told me that ostan-collections.net points to a French server, I also tried some French speedtests, yielding anything from 200 to 700 kbit/s, depending on which test I took.

I'll redo the test later this month after I use up my monthly download quota - I get capped at 64/64 kbit/s after 6 GB of download.

I tried that speed test on the first page. I tried areas in the US, and got around 700-800kb in downloading. Then I tried the Philippines and got 462kb.

Hughesnet home basic is rated at 768kb/s down 128kb/s up, actual transfer normally tops out around 150kb/s download.

Though I get cut off if I download more than 200MB every 24 hours, which totally sucks. Thank god I can use the college network.

Basically it means your ISP is too cheap to upgrade their infastructure to actually provide the service they are selling you, so you get a nice bang on the draw for a little while and then they cut you off. Their reason being that a minority of their customers make up the majority of the usage on their networks.

I say as long as the routing access permissions are set the same at their end, it doesn't matter how much I use I still have to share it equally with all other users of their network. Meaning that their 'claim' is utter bull, they just don't want me to be able to get my money's worth out of it nor do they want to upgrade their systems to actually provide the bandwidth they promise for an extended period of time.

My speeds are by far not the fastest, but still plenty acceptable. Meanwhile a few weeks back, I had to suffer through dismally slow connections of 7 KB/sec and download speeds of 1 KB/sec! x__x

Keep in mind, there are probably quite a few people on OSC at their university, and those connections can be outrageously fast (you'd be surprised what one can afford with gov't grants and all that tuition money;)).  Also many people here are probably living in higher residential areas where one often finds much improved options for internet access.  All in all, what I'm saying is that many of these people have much more bandwidth than they would probably ever need :P.  I'd say 4MB broadband is nothing to sneeze at, the college I used to attend had a much faster connection, but compare 4MB/s to this:

Believe it or not, that's not bad for someone living in a rural area.  Even in the U.S., it's pretty uncommon for rural folk to have any form of internet connection outside of dial-up or satellite (eww, expensive and unreliable, DO NOT WANT).  In this case we're talking the base package for an ADSL connection (which is what I still consider the "po' man's internet"), still I'm quite happy with this, beats the piss outta the alternatives here.

btw.  Smokey those rates are really impressive, wish something like that was available where I live.

My cousin lives in the middle of nowhere - the ABSOLUTE middle of nowhere, really, I mean it, only wolves around and the nearest house is like 10k away - and they pay some 15$/month for a stable 4down/0,5up connection.


A bit more centralized am I, so I've got a 100/10 connection for some 30$/month.

The primary line, a 10/1 Roadrunner cable connection. Not much to say about it.


This is my Home Network Center's "backup" line, powered by a spare UM150 modem and a Verizon Wireless 'Daypass' plan when needed in dire emergencies (network outages lasting 6+ hours).

the highest download speed i could get when downloading file from megaupload is around 170kb/s, pretty nice as it only takes around 30 minutes or less to download a 100mb file...

I've been meaning to ask my provider why the upload is so pathetic in comparison to the download, my iPhone has a faster upload speed. Though I have so many computers that this might be skewed. Since supposedly we have a 15 mb/s download speed.

On a completely random note, I was starting a STAR DRIVER ep dl just now. As I watched the speed rise to the skies in a matter of seconds (and spouted, "Downloading at motherfucken lightspeed!") I realized that the speed is the same, really - it's ALWAYS lightspeed, as long as you're using fibre optics, and in copper cable it's the speed of that. So "Internet Speed" is either an euphemism for some sort of drug, or a misinterpretation of bandwidth-related terms. If anything, "transfer rate" should be more proper.

I ping roughly 25 in Quakeworld on the TX server, while everyone else gets 60+
But my packet loss is always around 1-3% on anything

No; I have (really crappy) DSL. It's faster than my old dial-up connection, at least, but it's still too slow when you try to watch videos (Anything streaming, like Netflix, is a test of patience), and unfortunately, it's the fastest speed offered in my area short of cable internet. I know; I wish I could talk my parents into switching, but since it took me ages to get them to switch from dial-up to DSL, I doubt they'd want to switch to cable internet just yet.

(As a note, it took me a good 5 years to talk them into DSL; from a span of when TechTV's The Screen Savers was still on the air until about 6 months after I went absent from this site due to major stability problems with my dial-up connection combined with having to share a desktop with my parents again because my sister took away her laptop)

Generally, talking my mom into any kind of upgrade is a near-impossible task; although in recent years, as I've proven that I know what I'm doing, she's become more willing to let me do upgrades.

I remember that talking her into upgrading from a 33.6K modem to a 56K modem was a pain; which, when I finally did convince her to let me try, that botched upgrade started the chain of events that lead to the purchase of Crappy (A PC loaded with with tons of bloatware, had little RAM, tons of driver conflicts, and was an overall mess...but it did lead me to discovering Chip's Challenge; which was a plus).

With hardware upgrades and the like, that's because she though I was going to mess something up; the failed upgrade to a 56K modem didn't help much. However, shortly after Frankenstein Classic was built, she began to lighten up; letting me handle a lot more than I used to be able to.

With the upgrade to DSL, it's because she claimed 56K was faster; after experiencing DSL for the first time on my grandma's desktop, which could barely handle Windows as it was, let alone internet

I know; she did the same thing with Internet Explorer 4, when the first time she used it was on a PC my uncle had screwed around with the setting on, which made the scrollbar on the side disappear. As a result, we kept using version 3 for years until she made the upgrade to version 5

EDIT: Since my sister is in the process of moving, I couldn't test her connection this weekend. A shame, because I was looking forward to showing off how awesome it is.

Instead, here's what my connection is like from a wired connection (via 2k-tan the Desktop. The previous one I took of my home connection was over Wifi, using Asagi). It's a tiny bit faster, although not by much

8MB/s is slow? I'd love to have a connection like that, and I'm pretty sure my desktop would love one that fast as well (Especially when I buy something off Steam; downloading Portal 2 was a test of patience)

It sometimes cuts on me, but usually it happens when my connection gives up because there's just too much for it to take in; as my parents and I learned when they where watching a streaming video on Netflix while I was watching the latest episode of Linkara's History of Power Rangers

@pentium: cheer up. maybe if you get your own place the speeds will be better. :3 (it reminds me of mel and her dorm; the internet there sucked so bad that she and her roommate bought a router and pay for their own internet. this was great when there was a fire in the basement of the building, knocking out the internet for the entire dorm......except them. -w-)

i think one of the reasons it's so wonky (besides the fact that it's public and that multiple people are using it) is that it's roving wifi. since it's moving instead of a landline, i think that would affect the speed. :\

In our area, the only provider for satellite internet is like $150+ a month for speeds equal to our $15 a month DSL connection. Which, they now offer faster speeds in our area...but I doubt I'd be able to talk mom into paying the extra $10 a month for a connection twice as fast, even if it means Netflix would load faster :/

Still ISDN 64KBpS + 64KBpS dual digital cnannel for a total of 128K if coupled, and at daddy home he upgraded from 7MBpS o 20MBpS. On cellphone standard 3G HDSPA-HDSUPA (I have no necessity of 4G ATM) and I do not checked ever how much quick is the City Municipal free WiFi. I will never connect to them except in case of disaster... Too much security issues when you connect such a city service IMHO!

Awwww, I can't answer the poll anymore. My download speed (normally) would be somewhere in 1-6 MB/s though
(if it's speedtesting and stuff, then mine would be 13-20 Mbps or so for both downloading and uploading. That's national servers though, not international ones (what I meant is servers outside my country), so I don't know)

this feels.....generous. the internet here is hot garbage. to be fair, it's shortly after midnight, so no one else is using it, i think. (me having oceans of tabs open doesn't help, either.)
