Title: Music
Post by: SleepyD on September 30, 2006, 12:37:51 PM
Ok... In my past experience this kinda thread never lasts long...

There was a day when I watched an ep of .hack//SIGN on CN.
I liked the story... sure, not much action, but i didn't mind.
(I still haven't finished it, for lack of even basic cable and that
anime DVDs are expensive)
In any case, on to my real point.  I fell in love with the music in
.hack//SIGN.  I got the soundtrack, and Yuki Kajiura became my
musical goddess. lol

Kajiura is probably the one that introduced me to more anime,
cuz I went looking for more stuff done by her.  Let's see, how did
it go... (Madlax, Noir, Mai-HiME, Tsubasa Chronicle, Elemental "Gelade"
(Liked "Gerad" better...), Mai-Otome)  And absolutely loved Akatsuki no
Kuruma in Gundam SEED.

Who else, oh, Yoko Kanno! Wolf's Rain, Cowboy Bebop, GitS:SAC....
Love it.

And no... I haven't ignored the OP and EDs. While songs by See-Saw and
FictionJunction would fall under Kajiura, I like the songs by KOTOKO and
I've Sound.

Before this gets too long and I run out of things to say, I'll let you all keep
the thread moving.  Music (or lack of) is a key part of anime.  You can't
ignore it! ^^

Asian Kung-fu Generation, Le~Arc~en~Ciel, T.M. revolution, SEE-SAW, and the woman that sings the 4th ending theme of inuyasha ^_^

KOTOKO (does music for a ton of dating sims), Ali Project (good music, a little too gothic lolita for my tastes), and Triomatic (I'll give you a hint: Mahoromatic ending) are all good.

If you like KOTOKO, I highly recommend all the other artists from I've Sound.

Those artists seem to be moving out of the dating sim world and into anime. Kawada Mami's Hishoku no Sora from Shakugan no Shana, and Eiko Shimamiya's Higurashi no Naku Koro ni from... Higurashi no Naku Koro ni! XD;

At Anime Expo 05, I saw KOTOKO in concert.  I had never heard of her at the time, but I love the catchy trance tunez. ^^

You know how people wave around lighters at concerts? At the KOTOKO concert, during a piano interlude and the subsequent slow song, people waved around cellphones.  Having never seen this before, I found it quite amusing and pulled out my cell with everyone else.  ^^  (I even spotted a PSP. lol)

Village People have a handful of really catchy songs. *nods*

As for anime music, I mostly know only the openings and endings of the series I've watched, and in some specific cases also some of the soundtracks in general and in the most ultimate cases the singers.

My personal favourite anime song voices are those of Rie Tanaka, Naomi Tamura (I mostly know her from the two marvellous MKR openings songs Yuzurenai Negai and Hikari to Kage o Dakishimete), Mitsuko Horie (often very strong voice) and last but maybe most importantly, the late Ritsuko Okazaki who tragically died earlier the same month I originally fell in love with her songs.

In soundtracks, I value the ones specifically high in Martian Successor Nadesico and Hanaukyo Maid Tai La Verite (for some insane reason, I've found this series to be one of my favourites in many aspects, despite its err... lacking plot and rather stereotypical characters). Michiru Oshima is responsible for the soundtrack in the latter mentioned, but I cannot recall the respective person for MSN at this moment.

Headache destroying my concentration... can't focus any longer. -_-

haha, wow, someone revived my music thread.

Yay, another Kajiura fan!  XD;
sorry, I fanboy when it comes to Kajiura. haha

Motoi Sakuraba's work fits perfectly with the games they hire him for.  I love the music at the end of Tales of the Abyss.

of course, there's always I've Sound. A lot of their stuff is pretty good. ^^

Ah, I almost forgot. I shall introduce you to people on youtube who play music from various anime/games.
first, TAMMUSIC, a Japanese music guy who had another account with more stuff that seems to have disappeared... in any case, he plays violin and piano, does music from Air, Kanon, Touhou, and I think there's a Haruhi vid in there somewhere.... http://www.youtube.com/profile?user=TAMUSICSKY

Another is an American improv guy, does his own renditions of anime/game music. Lots of music on there, great stuff.

I wonder, is this thread only for anime/game music?

If that is the case then I shall list my favourites here.

Yuki Kajiura, I fell in love with the Xenosaga OST's
Motoi Sakuraba, he strangely resembles Frédéric Chopin, the orchestrated works he does are often not so good, but the piano music is genius!
I liked the music in Dynasty Warriors, MASA, Toru Hasebe and Kenji Nakajo.
Also Jón Hallur the one who made the music for Eve-online, those who play it know.
As for anime there's Shiro Sagisu, my all time anime composer favourite.
Konishi Kayo
Kondoo Yukio
Mitsumune Shinkichi
Toshihiko Sahashi
Yasushi Ishii
Ooshima Michiru
Yoshihisa Hirano
and Hideki Taniuchi

huh, never thought about Sakuraba's music like that... I do adore his piano stuff...

let me add Kenji Kawai and Tenmon.
Kawai's stuff include Higurashi, Fate/stay night, GitS2: INNOCENCE, Ringu, and Ringu 2. ^^

Tenmon famously does music for Makoto Shinkai's movies, and the strings in The Place Promised in Our Early Days (aka Beyond the Clouds) is epic. ^^

I heard of Yuki Kajiura before Kanno. ^^;

.hack//SIGN was one of the first serious types of anime that I've seen, and it appealed to me greatly.  The music was amazing, and I think it's still one of Kajiura's best.

Kanno is great too. ^^ If I listened to Kanno before Kajiura, I might be a Kanno fanboy instead of a Kajiura fanboy. haha.... composer fanboys... don't hear that very often.

I've Sound is beginning to make themselves known.  You all know about KOTOKO, but there's Kawada Mami (Shana OP) and Shimamiya Eiko (Higurashi OP, Higurashi Kai OP)

ahaha, ok, I think I missed the mark by a liiiitle bit. XD; just a little bit.

erm... I had a good night's sleep today, let's see if I can come up with a description:

Her songs tend to be slower than other I've sound songs. Her songs have a sad feel, but it seems stronger somehow...
Actually, now that I think about it, I'm starting to think the difference between EIKO's songs and the artists you mentioned is because of the bass. It gives her music that "oomph"

I've sound loves their synth, right? :3

Her Higurashi music is a bit different from her other songs. But you can still get an idea of her music, I guess. The Higurashi Kai OP is closer to her past music with I've.

YouTube:Higurashi, Higurashi Kai OPs (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jlnH7vPeWfY)

Edit: I just listened to her song VANILLA, and she can pull off ballads like those from the artists you mentioned. ^^ She's not that well known, and I'm only now listening to her music. ^^;

I'm not really a fan of hip-hop or rap and I probably wouldn't have liked that song if I would have heard it with out the video.

I've been listening a lot to Hiroyuki Tsuji (Samurai Deeper Kyo) and I think that he would be great if he would lay down sound effects a bit, in the fusion rock he does that is. I have nothing to say about his music that is on the calm side, I find it to be 'brilliant' as they say.
