I've recently found out about these OS girls and I have to say that the whole idea is very interesting. Poking around in various places, I found this and I was curious if anybody could tell me about it? Being that everybody here is very fond of the OS women, I figured this would be the best place to inquire.
It looks like some sort of XP-tan desktop animated widget or something like that, but I can't be sure. Any idea's where to find out more about it? Here's what it looks like. Thanks very much! ;010

I think I've seen that before...somewhere. I don't think it's an animated desktop, probably a little animation in front of a screenshot of a desktop. By the way, feel free to introduce yourself at the Member Introduction Thread.
Yes, the one I've seen was indeed a flash file that presented a typical WinXP desktop in the background, and WinXP-tan greeting the 'master', telling how happy she is to be working with him, or something like that. The WinXP-tan in the small animation above is the same as in the flash file, but moves differently from the original one I saw, and this one also features Japanese kana moving on the screen which didn't happen in the flash.
Interesting, I'd say. If not a fully operating animated desktop, at least someone's added more into the original flash according to the new find. :D

Even though that is an animated GIF, it shouldn't be impossible to convert that to a real animated desktop using one of the handful of 3rd-party software tools that claim to do just that:

Animated desktops themselves aren't a built-in feature in any desktop that I know of, although perhaps that's where that Aero-thingie for Vista comes in. I do recall some point in the 90's where animated desktop icons were being marketed (especially on old Gateway systems), but I'm sure there's a reason why they didn't catch on. ^__^
In anycase, if the tool above works for you, who's to say we can't animate our own OS-tan backgrounds. Flash tweening and a little assistance from Poser could yield acceptable results without having to resort to individual frame-drawing by hand. -v-
I know you can do the same with Yahoo Wigets (Formaly known as Konfabulator) and StarDock's DesktopX.
Speeking about animated OS-tans. I did came across to a singing 95-tan flash animation. Somehow kind of gave me an idea for a Yahoo wiget that would play 95-tan singing animation whenever iTunes is playing, and when iTunes is paused or not playing the animation stops and goes to her getting ready to sing.
That's the spirit. If you have the time, I'd try it out and see how it goes. If you need help, some of us can take a look too. ^__^
iTune's is one thing, but as far as desktops go....
I know love is blind, but is there a risk that a dancing, "bouncy" XP-tan would get boring after a while? ^^'
I would prefer to have a sort of animated os-tan wallpaper with all of them involved...
But I would want xp, 2000, and 95 tan as the main ones

Well, this was before most of you guys who answered joined, but in the downloads section of the forum there was an adorable XP-tan desktop friend. Pretty much useless as hell, but so so cute.
When you first opened her up and tried to click on her, she would get confused and have tons of ?s around her. Later on she would just blink and generally be adorable and take up RAM, much like the girl herself.
I'm not sure if I have her anymore, but if someone else did, that'd be cute. I think there was another girl though.
I so want that XP-tan desktop friend, rdhdtwns! How come she's not there anymore? Did crackers wreck the site...or what?

When I run Another Task Manager, it shows "xp_screenmate" running and using resources; but no XP-tan appears on the desktop. Any suggestions as to how I might remedy this shyness would be greatly appreciated!

XP-tan is mainly a cute character, created for the purpose of having a mainly moe character.
Nope, she basically just sits there, blinks, and smiles. When you first try to run your mouse over her she gets all shy and pops up with ?s all around her. After that.. just sits.
MisterCat, I really don't know how to help you x.x I've never had this problem before.. I know if you right click on her, she goes away.. but that's about it :( Maybe someone smarter can help ._.

Rdhdtwns, I've finally seen XP-tan on my desktop! She appeared whilst I was looking through some files.

Well, NewYinzer, I tried again (for the umpteenth time) and XP-tan continues to hide. The program is running all right, as it's listed in my Another Task Manager utility and is consuming resources; but something mysterious is keeping XP-tan herself from making an appearance.

Ive got a program that alows me to make screen mates, and build in animations for when they get clicked on and everything. just... it requires pixel art. I really suck at pixel art -_-

I, too, appreciate XP-tan; but I'm a newcomer to the scene, so my knowledge of the whole OS-Girls subject is limited at this point. There are, however, members of the board who have lots of knowledge and resources when it comes to anime/manga and offshoots therefrom!
That's the good news. The bad news is this: As in any human endeavor, the matter of personal taste enters the picture; and, unfortunately for those of us who consider ourselves fans of XP-tan, a number of people believe XP-tan receives too much attention and hence they're (shall we say) reluctant to participate in efforts to further advance her publicity.
Some would call it personal preference, others might use the term politics; but the upshot of the matter is that when it comes to XP-tan you're pretty much on your own. If you do find that video you're looking for, please let me know because I'd like to snag it too!

Anyhow... I dont know if that program exists. To have a high quality 35 animation like that playing that quickly as the system boots up.. i donno -_- I have a 4500 laptop that runs half life 2 at top specs with no slowage at all even after 6 hours of playing, and it would still be slow and choppy at that point but who knows. Im not a programer.. Im an artist.
Tho.. Ive messed with vista some, and it seems like it would be much more suited for that sort of thing then XP

Ok, a friend of mine says she has the CD with the application for the desktop companion XP-TAN. She stays in japan(go figure) and i'm trynna get her to send me the files so i can upload them somewhere.
The only clue she gave me before she went off was "go search for "os xptan" on google or something" then she said "and also ubuntu" what's ubuntu?
Ubuntu is a Linux distribution. Very easy to use compared to other Linux Distros and a good way for users to get used to the Linux operating system. There's also an Ubuntu-tan, but she's a bit obscure. ^^;
As I have no clue what that has to do with the Animated XP-tan, I'm just about as in the dark as you are regarding this..... -v-;

Great to see you on Ubuntu! If you have problems, just ask in the computing forum to summon a Kami-Tux for help. :) You might see the Ubuntu-tan and Kami-tux occasionally looking at you from the banner (the brown one with the japanese characters).

Whether the xp-tan desktop on youtube is real or not, i'm not sure. But i'm gonna get my friend to send her copy of it from japan. It's about 700-1gb if i remember our conversation right. So...yeah.

Ya it is my Avatar I came here with, I was asking somwhere on the boards here where I could get a full size copy if anyone knew so I could use it as my desktop.
I had always thought of that thing as being more like one of those windows helpers things(IE: the dog, wizard, ect). I always thought it would be fun to see if there is a way of making your own windows helper avatar and make the various os-tan characters into those things. I know if I had an OS-tan windows helper I would probly actually leave the things turned on.
I bet it would be pretty easy to make an office assistant at the very least.
the desktop mascots that just sit on your windows.. those really arnt even worth the time -_-
I will have to look into what exactly is required to make an office assistant, I think that the os-tan community would find an office assistant to be an amusing little toy and much more usefull than a desktop mascot

I did my research into this last night and I think I found out thow to create an office assistant. I am working on obtaining the software required to make one, once I obtain that I am going to make a test one of like a stick figure or something like that and if sucessfull I will try and hunt down an artist to make up some sprites for an OS tan office assistant. These looked to be some real dynamic little things where with the right programing you could set them up with an event driven animations, idle animations and even get them to read your emails for you and have custom messages that the default office assistants dont have. I will let you all know the results of this once I get a bit farther along with this project.
I was thinking about building an HTML/Flash page to set as my background with an evil XP mascot walking around.
Used to be something called window sitters, back when Win 98 was current.... They would sit on the active window and do some basic interaction (dancing sleeping etc...). I can't quite remember how or where I got it... but I had a Ryoko sitter from Tenchi Muyo. If I can find it again, and possibly adapt it to the OS-Tan scene... I'll give a shout.

Humm thats an Idea too.. never really thought about that but its a possiblity... how ever she would be... Limited.. You could build a web page for active desktop and embbed a flash doc with a randomized animated character such as XP, who would either randomly do things, or you could have programed actions depending on keystrokes or mouse position.. But it would only work while the desktop was active I think... Im not sure
but ill say this tho.. it is different then the old window mascots. I have a bunch of those, and those are simple to make if your good with pixel art.. however, other then a randomized blink, their actions or what not were only engaged when you clicked on them, their major purpose was just to sit there and look pretty.. not exactly what we want but at least they follow you to whatever active window your using
the only other option I see would be the office assistant, and as they would animate and actually "work" for you, doing animations depending on what they program is sopose to be doing, they will only appear when office is open and one of its programs are active. again.. limited usefullness...
But those three options are within a motivated persons grasp. Beyond that we would need a coder to write a program from scratch and that would only be better if they were one hell of a coder..

Last night, I happened to run into the YouTube video for XP-Tan. Needless to say, I was like, "Woah! They actually have her for your desktop?!" Like a child who sees a new toy in the toy store window, I HAD to have her on my desktop. So I spent about 1-2 hours just looking for information on the fabled desktop buddy. Needless to say, I was without luck. So, getting tired, I went to sleep around 2am.
Cue to a few moments ago, when I ran across this thread. I'm basically saying to myself, "Sheesh! If you would've just figured that out YESTERDAY..." Anyway, I'm just glad to finally have an answer as to why I couldn't find her. ^^;

Looks like a job for deusprogrammer! I have a graphics engine written for my game, and I could easily alter it to make a program that works like that YouTube video. Actually I could make it do more. Make it more like an interactive assistant...or even a game (like if you are gone for a long time she would be tearful and happy to see you, or if you ignore her she would get angry.). She could even tell you how many emails you have waiting or other such information, allow the user to dress her however they please, have her dress differently based on the time of day, have several different OS-tans to choose from (that could be downloaded as a single file), etc. This wouldn't be hard...but I will say this, I can't do it alone. If you all want to see this happen, I would need user involvement. I can do the programming alone, but I need artists. I do draw, but my skill is lacking compared to others on this board...so who's with me?

not bad crazy.. i dl it and scan it it's clean! and the word ballon is in japanese.. least you can move her around the botton of ya screen left to right and etc.. but ya have to manually kill it from task manager. :| i assume it uses a flash file to play and she tays on top of any app.. right click her with mouse hides desktop task bar and icons but thats all it seems to do.. my question is for fedora.. that wikiped-tan widget, how can i use it with yahoo widgets? do i need to submit the contents to yahoo widgets? or has someone already have? i downloaded the copy placed here and yet to figure out how to use it
Be it is real or not, it can be made. Just as easily as custom editions of XP. For example, I have seen a Windows XP Scarface Edition.

i have discovered what is readily available to windows xp, is an active desktop, which if i wished to use this forum as my desktop.. i can! so, that said, if anyone can get the animation from the xp-tan videos, sans the icons already as seen in the videos found in the downloads, that will be cool, i'll then make a .swf file with it, embed it on a html doc, host it.. and share it! then we can all have this 'trick' and submit maybe the .swf & html for downloads so others can host and etc..

i did a test with one of the movieclips found here @ our downloads section, converted it with SoThink Encoder for Adobe Flash [ demo version..sux, cuz it will show a scrolling etc.. this was made with etc.. @ top -- anyone have a keygen? hehehe..] which made the .swf and a html doc .. i hosted it to my site [ see sig ] and used desktop properties.. selected tab desktop, then customize desktop then the 'web' tab, added NEW url [ default will have your homepage there] to my swf embeded in an html doc, and it POOF! the same one everyone seen.. as someone stated since it is a short clip, it loops .. the short clip over and over..maybe make a short .swf with a timed 7 minute one that just has her do a lil wink etc.. something do-able...
but i am no expert on flash etc.. and my movie editing is still amaturish... soif anyone has ideas let us all know in this thread!

Here is the XP-tan desktop mascot I made from frame by frame jpeg of the movie clip at the downloads section using 'Apricot', a japanese RSS reader desktop mascot program. You need to install Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 or above to use the program.

I forgot to replace something in the folder.
Please download this script and replace the Apricot\Characters\XP-Tan\XP-Tan.xml.
Oh, right click the program for the menu to change character!
There are two extra character inside it.
It's not perfect but if you know how to edit the script you can control how she talks.

i distinctly remember having a program that turned .swf into .exe so you could have a desktop object (similar to Desktop X but you dont need to install anything to rum the objects). if someone finds a .swf of any OS-tan (recommended one with a transparent background) i can find the program and make the object.
I have the small xp screen mate that this post discussed at the first 3 pages. And has for that Bouncy XP desktop, it's kinda cute but I guess if she turns into an exe she would eat ram. XP-Chan is good at that, sadly. lol But yes I'm on the hunt for her. I have the small cute useless one and a Naru window watcher mascot. It's fun. activate those too and Naru actually sits on top of Windows XP's screenmate. Shame having someone sitting on your head when both are window sitters. Lmao.
about the thing posted by samidare back there, how is it we us-peoples (gawd i hate it) convert .rar files into ones useable on our PCs?
If you search Google for WinRAR, you'll find a program that unpacks many different compression formats (.rar, .tar, .7z, .iso) and although it's supposed to stop working after 40 days if you don't pay for it, I've been using it for months.
7-zip does all that for free. ;D
Yep I got winrar too, said had 40 days too. been months, still works. As for the other, idk perhaps we all have our own taste. I think we do it just for fun, until we unrar a killer virus that kills the system lol.
Just use 7-zip....
Compression rate better than winrar....
I find WinRar better, since it integrates better into the shell.

They run on the Vista Sidebar. The Thoosje sidebar, and many other ports, are essentially the Vista Sidebar on XP. Thus, with 3rd-party apps used, it can run on XP as well.

I was just remembering something similar in practice that might prove useful to anyone trying to create this interactive desktop OS-tan. There used to be quite a few game back in the day that had interactive features that allowed you to "adopt" a pet which would just roam around your screen and play with ya while you did other things on your desk top. I remember that you could fully interact with your pet, and I had the mods that allowed your pets to play with any folders on your desktop (opening them, or moving the around) also, you would be able to click on them to interact with them (this could prove fun with OS-tan).
If someone knew the base programing matrix used for those interactive "pet" games, then creating an OS-tan desktop interactive would be as simple as making new images and setting vectors.

I have ALKY and it works great. I have the sidebar too so I'll be giving the gadget a look at. although XP chan looks nice I've never seen a vistan one It was cute.
I was thinking if this is a trick were isi it and how did they did it because in some of the videos in youtube the are some icon behind the girl and i cant see them when she moves and when the user moves the mouse he selects something and that jumping effect its as u guys would say "wheres the dam pause button" lol how is that efect done and I want to know where this video started and how did they did it because I saw one in vista and other in xp and had had icons behind her
