Title: 4koma Project!
Post by: SleepyD on September 02, 2006, 02:24:17 PM
Ok... it seems that myself and others have come upon the idea that creating a bunch of 4koma's is a good idea.

So,

First, a name.  shall be this placed under Digital Complex, or shall we name it something else, like... i dunno. Simply Digital. XD;;

Furthermore, since there isn't really much of a story, anyone can submit anything of decent quality, really.  ...of course, nothing is stopping you from creating a little plot to go for mutiple pages.

If one has an idea but doesn't want to draw, let the artists know. I know I have a hard time coming up with ideas.  You can collaborate to make one, or just make one yourself.

OK. I think I'm done. If there's anything else people would like to add to get this thing more organized and detailed, please do so here, and the original post will be edited accordingly.

Hmm...let me wipe off the cobwebs and come up with a good idea...

What about:
-Exploring the effects of the Vista Launch on XP-tan?
-The bitter feud between OS/2-tan and 95-nee-san?
-The end of support for Windows 98 and SE?
-The friendship of PET-tan and C64-tan?
-The ongoing browser wars between Firefox-ko, Opera-tan, Netscape-tan, and IE-tan?

The next card is:

*drags herself in*

Gaaaaaaaaah,... no more........ can't......... continue......
Energy...... spent......... spamming......... other......... threads.........  X__x

*swoons*

No but seriously, I love the idea, but fear that our mutual time commitments will plague hell on our progress.  ^__^'

Before we even start, I propose first brainstorming methods to create an assembly line-style collaborative effort so we can churn these out quickly.  The faster we can create our own 4Koma-style comics, the more we'll accumulate and the greater our morale will be and drive to produce more.  ^__^

The steps should be broken down to the least complicated components, so that the person handling the individual tasks need not take more than 20 minutes creating their fill.  Everyone willing to participate should also post the hours they are free the most so that we know (more or less) who can work on what and when.

In any case, here's a proposed roadmap for a sample 4Koma comic:

==================

1) Decide on target character (Chibi ME)

2) Deside on supporting characters (none)

3) Decide on complex or simple comic panels (simple, no background)

4) Decide on comic format (4 panel, top to bottom fully-vertical, no continuation)

5) Decide on premise (eating rollcake)

6) Expand on premise (while rummaging through Recycle Bin, ME-tan finds an old deleted rollcake and has no qualms about eating it [yuck!])

7) Text storyboard comic

>   1>  Me rummages through recycling bin
>    2>  Me pauses, feeling something familiar
>     3>  Me pulls out rollcake
>     4>  Me plops it in her mouth, savoring it happily

8} Embellish text storyboard

>      1> There should be something to explain why ME-tan is rummaging through the recycling bin.  Maybe she has with her a list of items she was requested to undelete.  In that case, have a few file extension icons lying around her to give sense of "mess".  Her arm should be fully extended into the Recycling bin.
>      2> Place the action "crown" next to ME-tan's head to indicate that something's caught her attention.  Also, wouldn't hurt to expand her "!" tag to exaggerate sense of surprise.
>      3> Rollcake should be made to look old, with an off-color, flies and a tag trailing behind it with an old date in the exact format as seen in the Windows Explorer Detail screen.  Since this is Chibi Me, the rollcake should be nearly half the size of her head.
>      4> Despite its size, ME-tan sucks on it innocently the way a kid would suck on a popsicle.

9)  Establish emotions (eyes/face):

>        1> Eyes normal; subtle smile; tongue upturned, sticking out slightly; face turned away, letting her hands do all the searching.
>        2> Pupils shrink slightly in surprise; narrow slit for a month, neither smiling nor frowning; face still turned away
>        3> Eyes normal, but brows raised slightly out of curiosity; mouth is tiny "o" shape; face is turned towards the recycling bin/rollcake
>         4> Eyes closed in narrow arch-shape; mouth covered entirely by rollcake; mild blush below her eyes; heart-shape floats by her head

10) Stick-figure storyboard  sketch

11) Round-figure storyboard sketch

12) Preliminary rough sketch of ME-tan's head, hair outline only

13) Preliminary rough sketch of ME-tan's body

14) Preliminary rough sketch of props

15) Preliminary rough sketch of ME-tan's hair

16) Panel 1 final sketch of ME and props with details finalized.

17) Panel 2 final sketch of ME and props with details finalized.

18} Panel 3 final sketch of ME and props with details finalized.

19) Panel 4 final sketch of ME and props with details finalized.

20) Panel 1 inking (line tracing)

21) Panel 2 inking

22) Panel 3 inking

23) Panel 4 inking

24) Panel 1 embellishments (foreground, background, additional props)

25) Panel 2 embellishments

26) Panel 3 embellishments

27) Panel 4 embellishments

28} Panel 1 base color (simple bucket fill)

29) Panel 1 base color

30) Panel 2 base color

31) Panel 3 base color

32) Panel 4 base color

33) Panel 1 color embellishments

34) Panel 2 color embellishments

35) Panel 3 color embellishments

36) Panel 4 color embellishments

37) Panel 1 shading (establish light direction)

38} Panel 2 shading

39) Panel 3 shading

40) Panel 4 shading

41) Panel 1 shadows

42) Panel 2 shadows

43) Panel 3 shadows

44) Panel 4 shadows

45) Text Bubbles?  (no)

46) English/Japanese Text sound effects? (yes)

>    -Small "Japanese Clumping" sounds for rummaging through Recycling Bin
>    -Small Japanese "plop" sound for sticking rollcake into mouth.  ma

47)  Write specific script or kanji/kana symbols to be used and where.

48}  Add Text bubbles and text if applicable to panels

49) Final touchup pass

50) Add in credits.

================

Sounds like a lot, but broken down between just 5 people, and that's only 10 small steps for each person!  ^__^

10 people = 5 small steps

If someday we should have 20 people,.. by GAWDS!!!  We could practically be our own animation studio!  ^__^

But the trick is to keep efficiency in mind.  Everyone has busy schedules to keep and witty anecdotes to post; but as long as we can work around this handicap (and use it to our advantage), we can carry this project out into fruition.  ^__^'

C-Chan added the following  5 minutes after last message :

Think about it for a while.  ^__^

I'll be working on my weekly chibis, so please don't mind me if I disappear for a while.  But I will definitely be back.  ^v^

Now, as this is something that doesn't needs a dedicated team and deadlines, I think I can help once in a while.

I like the idea of not having an overall plot, that gives a lot of freedom to non-dedicated contributors.
For those who do not draw: post your ideas!! some of us just can't come up with new ideas =/
I think that I'd be good if the strips kept text to a minimum (and even none if it's possible)
If there's a theme that can be considered "obscure", we can add an explanation in the end of the strip

I'm not sure about keeping the strips in grayscale or color. And also not sure about if we should keep a common style or have everyone drawing their own style

Here, I have an idea for the strip about XP-tan reaction about Vista (not sure if this will be done soon, but I plan on drawing this). It also helps as a reference on how writing your ideas if you want someone else to write a comic).

panel 1:
XP-tan walking around (background: none, maybe some windows opened). A window catches her attention. Looks like a calendar
panel 2:
The calendar covers the entire panel (anyone can post a screenshot of any  calendar software?). There's a date marked, the Win Vista release date. It haves a reminder: "Get Win Vista ASAP" (or something along the lines)
panel 3:
XP-tan face covers entire panel. Stunned expresion
panel 4:
2 options: 1)XP-tan on sit on the ground, covering her face with her arms 2)XP-tan face, 1 tear in each eye, sad look.

Good idea, but how about this:
Panel 1:
XP skipping, quietly saying "The computer was made for me" (background : none)
Panel 2: XP stops suddenly, with a perplexed look on her face (background: none, but dark)
Panel 3: We see a calendar, with "Buy Win Vista" on some date (art: just a picture of a calendar, but a picture of the program is fine)
Panel 4 has three options:
1) XP on the ground, face in arms, crying
2) XP's face, one tear in each eye, sad look
3) XP's face, small tear coming off the left eye, sad look

I'll be back to school on the 5th, so please don't mind me if I disappear for a while. School hours are 8am-6pm. I'll probably post every few days from 8pm-10pm. Rest assured, I will definitely be back.

Ahh, there'll be more than enough time to depress ourselves later.  I'd vote for humorous endings, since that helps with morale and all.  ^__^

Since you guys laid out the conceptual framework, here's my stick sketch contribution featuring both your ideas plus some embellishments.

If you like what you see, feel free to redraw or sketch the next parts over it.  ^.^

Genius! Good idea, sticking to humor and not getting caught up in the drama. Anyone want to draw this?

Wistful thinking: Someday, this site may become 1/4 the size of MegaTokyo.

HUmm, i find that idea funny, I might have to do a quick full page one with screen tones.  or maybe I should get back to working on Digital complex, its well over do for progress.

Must stay... away... from... side projects....

Oh well, Ill take a shot at it tonight, while I wait for the writer to finish the rough draft.  Eads insists that he is working on it while reading over our old posts, mewhile drawing up a one page sketch might be a good warmup for me.  That and I should Probobly finish the XP digital complex poster now that I got it off my dead laptops harddrive

[protesting] Hey now, the stick figures are there to ensure the concept sketch doesn't take any more than the 20 minute Limit to draw!  ^0^
Remember, I'm trying to advocate for an assembly line approach so that drawing these 4Koma panels can be quick and easy....  ^-^

*chuckles*

Hehe,... in other words,... my work is done for a while....  -v-

*hands over paintbucket and copic marker to Darknight*

Your turn....  ^__^

I'd recommend doing a round sketch on XP-tan and adding at least a color map to the background images.  ^__^

Let me know when you're done....  ^v^

I heard the captain was giving it a shot. But not sure If he's going to do it. I he's not, then I'll do it. Still, have to refine my chibi hability (that or make smaller versions of my drawing style...If it can be called "style"). But still working on OS/2 (6 preliminar versions until now...now I'm on the 7th. The others are on the garbage bin)...It's taking loong time. But with some luck, I'll post it tomorrow...

Yep, I figured that other time commitments were gonna be a problem, which is why I proposed the "Assembly Line" approach earlier.  But frankly, do you think it'd be safer to just scuttle the whole thing for now, and focus on DigiCom or your own projects?  I know from experience that handling multiple projects at the same time can be duzee....  ^__^'

At least we can finish the one 4Koma we got started, but after that you wanna close shop?  'v'
Title: 4koma Project!
Post by: SleepyD on September 04, 2006, 10:01:21 PM
The assembly line thing makes me a bit uncomfortable... Personally, I think it makes the 4koma look more complicated than it should. ^^;
Maybe if one does all four panels at once instead of doing one... that might be better.

To make it simple,
idea => doodle/sketch => ink => color => (optional) shade

yeah, 4komas shouldn't take much time (1 hr max) once you have an idea.
We'll finish the one you guys got going right now, and afterwards I'll just leave this open to anyone who wants to submit something.

Okey-dokey....

Although you have to admit, seeing the hodgepodge of artistic styles would have been interesting (assuming it worked, and the entire 4koma wasn't burdened on a single or two artists... ^.^)
Title: 4koma Project!
Post by: SleepyD on September 04, 2006, 11:04:23 PM
haha, reminds me of something else me and my sister's did.

One person would draw a person doing something, the next will do a response, another would draw the next pane etc., etc.

There is totally no story.  People make it up as they go.  I did find that you'd have to tell everyone the characters you can use, else the thing will get too bloated with characters being introduced every 3 panels.

Shall I start a Relay Comic project? XD;

Now then, "Mii-su-ta" SleepyD.  You're still absolutely sure you wanna go through with this?  ^__^
Cause I'm telling you know, if this 4koma or relay will interfere with your current s'hedule, I'm more than willing to not push this any further.

haha, true, this will be a bit much...

Between the 4koma and the relay,
Would you like to take over one and put the other on hiatus, take over both, or put both on hiatus? ^^

I'll be honest, I've rarely been able to find a long enough chunk of time for me to work on a drawing.  I doodle, but can't get a finished piece done.  It seems my work-load isn't going to be helping much either.

ha... so many fun things to do, so little time...

I remember seeing a concept like this in C-Chan's scrap art gallery. I like seeing something come of it :)

I have no ideas for a 4koma though...

read the rest of the thread Bella :P and it will make sence why.  The 4koma project was originaly going to be a group effort, and indeed Im still treating it as such.  I can whip them out pretty fast, but I cant come up with jokes and progression very well, hence where all the thinkers and people that wish they could do more but lack artistic talent come in

anyhow, ME-tan and them eating icecream idea.. what are we thinking about

frame 1, eating "this is so tasty" or something of the like
frame 2, 2k "me-tan dont eat so fast, youll get brain fresse"
Frame 3, silence...
Frame 4, 2k "OMG! She froze!"

Something like that?

That is close to what I had in mind, although the 4th frame I imagined a bit differently with XP-tan exclaiming "OMG! ME-tan froze!" and with 2K-tan appearing frustrated saying "Time to reboot her... again."

Frame 1: XP-tan inputting something into ME-tan, then saying, "Alright, this should do it. Now you can eat as much as you like!" or something, while 2k looks sorta doubtful...
Frame 2: ME-tan OM NOM NOM NOM
Frame 3: ME-tan red-faced and still OM NOM NOM NOM, more frantically, XP-tan "Well, how is it?" or something
Frame 4: ME-tan spewing fire out of everywhere, XP-tan all ^-^;ish as 2k asks her, "Just how much did you overclock her?" or something.

you relize you left one of her arm .. thingies.. unshaded?

Actually Ive come to really like that design of Vista. Im sure your arts have helped that along, but Im thinking I need to draw a picture of her.

Also, Id like to yank one of your sketches some time and ink and tone it in manga studio.

but back on topic,  4koma!  That refined last frame sounds good.  only thing Im having problems figuring out is how to do the framing so that all three characters fit into such a tight space, but the idea isnt big enough for a full page of comic art

Added after 16 hours 6 minutes:

okay, update:  Nearly finished, I just have to tone the last 3 frames. Possibly look for a new font too, the included fonts suck.

Best part isnt the Me-tan joke, but watching XP double fist ice cream cones, and even trying to eat both at once!

Also, Ive created a template file for DIGI COM 4koma comics. It takes some of the busy work out of the process so i can produce them quickly.  If anyone is interested in drawing 4koma and learning Manga Studio, let me know and ill make the file and a tutorial available. Untill then, keep the ideas cocming, I wand to release like 3 comics a week possibly

also, if someone is interested, I need a web comic style web site made, one that can be linked to the forums and the forums back to it.  I want to start releasing these as a regular web comic untill i can get the full page Digital Complex done.

Frame 2: *strained face* "Won't work, won't work..."

I do share Aurora-hime's gratitude that this project has been restarted after a 2-year hiatus.  This was the first time during my tenure that I attempted a collaborative work -- and although it wasn't immediately successful, it certainly inspired me to pursue other collaborations, for better or for worse.  -.-

I'd like to contribute another storyboard, whipped up in about 20 minutes.  Won't say anything more since I'm banking that pictures, no matter how crappy, are still worth a thousand words.  -.-

Well with the kind of appetites you're talking about, clearly every hand in the house is needed to gather the necessary ingredients (2 tbsp of SDRAM, a quart of SODIMM, a pinch of DDR2, etc.).

DOSKitty and CE-tan were doing just that,... but in the chaotic shuffle, nearly ended up as ingredients themselves.  ^^;

This is actually taken from an old picture idea I had eons ago, and in fact would've featured MS-DOS-chan as a main character.

BTW, I'm a bit pressed today, so I'll have to stop by later to continue my Epic Response Marathon if you want to call it that.

Something like, too much RAM = Overweight, MS-DOS tells the girls it's bad for their health, the years go on and the OS'es crave more and more RAM, lulz ensue.

Something like that. I suck at explaining sometimes.

It represents to the stereotype that more advanced Operating Systems consume increasing ammounts of RAM.

Stereotype,... cute.  ^.^
Nevertheless, more or less OS-tan canon at this point, as nicely illustrated here:

In fact, aside from the inclusion of unusual canon characters, my storyboard isn't particularly original -- just more of the same Win jokes.  :P

As for the other points, DOS-chan and DOSKitty are in fact eating the number 8, and yes Nejin's synopsis is pretty much on the ball (right down to the "lulz ensue part").

Now then, I'm going to engage in OSC Geek Mode,... so non-OSC Geeks please avert your eyes quickly or else you risk being engulfed in our weird and wacky Deculture.  ;)

PANEL 1

- This panel references some early Windows history discussed over at OS-tan Theories.  This is why NT-san, while still very friendly, should be dressed in an older battlesuit not unlike the one Inu-T uses here:

http://ostan-collections.net/imeeji/albums/userpics/11364/Inu-T_Battlesuit.png

...as she, like 95-tan, was actively fighting/training during that era (her weapon of choice being the rapier).

- Fortunately. 3.1-sama's lilac dress would makes its debut post-1990, so she would not look any different from her present-day self.

- Since she still exerted some influence in the Windows Family at the time, DOS-chan is still dressed in her old 1980's regal attire, as shown here (pending some slight adjustments to her hair, face, shoes, etc):

http://ostan-collections.net/imeeji/albums/os-tans/DOS/dos09.png

She also has more self-confidence, and is not adverse to "coach" the younger girls on many things, including the virtues of good programming and healthy RAM consumption.

- The fact that she appears bigger (in terms of depth-perception) in this panel is intentional -- the final sketch should follow through, since its important to establish that she has the greatest presense in her family at this point.

PANEL 2

- No need for history lessons here, as all the attire at this point is 100% present-day.

- ME-chan and 2K-tan should be pretty self-explanatory, but DOS-chan, while not looking completely pitiful yet, certainly starts to realize that her words aren't carrying the same weight, as both girls are consuming almost 2 years worth of food (in her mind) in one serving.  Suffice to say, she starts being her timid self around this point....

http://ostan-collections.net/imeeji/albums/os-tans/DOS/dos01.jpg

- Drawing the keyboard is optional.  Who knows if she really lugs that thing around at home anyway.... ;)

PANEL 3

- Yes, I fancy the +Nijiura+ version of Vistan -- although feel free to swap with Vistake for more comic potential.

- I don't think I need to explain this, but the "CENSORED" banners are not there because the girls somehow take joy in eating "nekkid" [sic] -- but rather, the eating frenzy is SOOOOO gruesome, it's just too terrifying to air even in an R-rated film.  The final sketch might better emphasize this if there are unidentified flying food particles and liquids squirting about.  :P

- XP Pro-tan is indeed eating a giant stick of RAM.  I think of this as the equivalent to pizza.

- Originally I had wanted Vistan to hawk done a whole cauldron's worth of RAM soup, but I switched to a glass of RAM juice in order to help make the helpless DOSKitty and CE-chan more visible.

- MSDOS-chan should be drawn at her smallest at this point -- it might also help to make her pale white, since that would make the proposed pajama easier to draw.

- Speaking of pajamas, the scene of the two girls pigging out is not as terrifying as the fact that this is technically a midnight snack for them.  ;P

PANEL 4

- This is meant to be a breather from the previous action, of course.  :P

- In our discussions, we theorized that DOSKitty once belonged to MSDOS-chan (and PCDOS-chan), but was gifted to 3.1-sama when she was born.  So even if she does spend 99% of her time on 3.1-sama's head, occasionally she enjoys a quiet moment with her old friend DOS-chan.  DOS-chan is certainly the one who would feed her whenever 3.1-sama is not around.

- The consumption of the "8" was really just a mindless visual gag -- but it's also meant to attract inappropriately-serious discussion about its meaning.  :P

- If you really really REALLY want to get deep into it, it can be interepreted in at least three different ways (and the final sketch should account for either accordingly):

- The punchline should be the only spoken phrase ever uttered in the comic (even the "lecture lecture lecture" thing should be illustrated as noise rather than words).  The phrase I threw in is a generic one, though -- many kudos would go to anyone who could think of something funnier/cuter.

FINAL THOUGHTS

- Of course, the purpose of this exercise is to just have fun and inspire participation, so the final geek note I have is to just toss all the other geek notes you've just read, and approach this with a clean slate and an open mind.  Chances are it will evolve into something more organic and more "OSC"-like than the original storyboard, as long as it's not bound by a rigid plan (but simply marginally-influenced by one).  :)

first off:

rapier:

Just wanted to clear up that little bit...

Some thoughts:
As where I can appriciate your geekery, I think that the most recognised versions of each character should be used and should remain uniform.  A lesser educated reader might mistake the many versions of DOS for differnt characters.  Same with NT.. I dont even know what battle suit you speak of.  I would be more inclined to either have the motherly pink dress NT or even Inu-T since there are alot of fans for her in the frame.

Next, as where they are known for eating RAM, I cant recall them ever litteraly eating ram, so I think regular food should be substituted, simply putting RAM written on the side of the glass or whatever like the comic reference that was put up.

For the thrid frame, I can imagin possibly changing it so that Vistan and XPtan are fighting over the food (like Lina and Gorry in slayers)  Id like to leave out the doskitty and CE random placement, as it takes to much spectualtion as to how they got there. 4koma is a simple joke, complex jokes and heavy thinking are more suited for the main manga.

In the final frame, Im thinking instead of the speculitive joke with the 8, just having DOS on her hands and knees  in that "utterly defeated" pose saying she needs a vacation, her lecture notes spread messily around her.

Ill see if i can whip up a sketch real fast.
Title: 4koma Project!

Well looking at it again, I suppose it really is more of a broadsword....

But it's a moot point anyway... your proposed changes are fine (and I love the food fight idea) and certainly would help make it easier to draw (although I think it'd be nice to have DOSKitty at least consoling the defeated DOS-chan).

I should probably note that omitting the actual physical RAM might detract from the "cuteness"...

...but I'm sure there are other clever ways to work with regular food -- for example, the "RAM" lettering.

In any event, I think my job here is done.  Can't guarantee that I'll come up with similar ideas/storyboards later on,... but I'm banking on the hope that I won't have to.  With so many members, the volunteering of ideas, especially for a more traditional project such as this one, should come in more regularly.  ;)

@Captain

Very good job, I think this is brilliant and precisely the kind of evolutionary humor I was shooting for (especially with the food fight).  Thank you for adding DOSKitty in the end,... she does lend a nice touch, and also encourages a bit of DOS solidarity that we rarely see anywhere.

The only change I might suggest is to drop the years altogether.  Aside from the fact they don't appear in the other half of the 4koma, Inu-T (or at least the version of NT she unofficially represents) was not around in 1993.  The whole comic is general enough to be set in the present day, as a kind of "day-in-the-life-of" scheme for poor DOS-chan.  While MSDOS-tan is not a popular character herself, she can be one with enough starring roles such as these -- my philosophy on her is, with enough attention and exposure, she can easily be transformed into the next Chiyo-chan.

The tentative title I give to my storyboard was "RAM Watchers", a very bad pun on "Weight Watchers". If no one else can think of anything wittier, I suppose I'll have to stick by that.

@iDarbert
Thank you.  -v-

Here is my idea...

Panel 2: XPtan and Tigertan (Mac OSX 10.4) walk into frame in the background hand in hand. While 95 and Mac still clash
Panel 3: XP and Tiger walk out of frame and 95 and Mac looks at them with a WTH look.
Panel 4: 95 scolding XP and the Mac OS scolding Tiger.

Welcome to OS-tan Collections, guyveroz!

You have very good ideas! (and I like the ramen pun, I'm a sucker for puns!) And convieniently, there is a sword-wielding Mac-tan: Macintosh System 7-tan, who is also 95-tan's mortal enemy who is possibly out for some revenge after a terrible defeat!

The idea is comical and sad at the same time, as the younger Mac and Windows-tans getting scolded by their war-minded elders would certainly foster lots of hatred among the two families again ;__;
