OS-tan Collections

Hello all!

I'm afraid I have to be a nuisance again, but I'd really like to do a little planning ahead.  ^__^'
But hopefully the subject matter will be a bit more fun.  ^.^

I'm assuming the first Linux-tans released during the OS-tan craze were the original GNU/Linux and Lindows (Linspire):



Naturally, the list was bound to expand to other distros as loyal Linux users felt compelled to represent (and rightfully so in most cases!).  Unfortunately, since there are literally HUNDREDS of distributions of Linux, alternative Unix-like systems and Unix-derived systems, it'd probably be easy to lose track of any OS-tans created for any of them.

So if you'd like, please join me in producing a mini repository for all Linux-tans (and Unix-tans, not actually the same thing) that you've encountered over the years.  And if you accidentally mention any distros with NO representative OS-tan, that's fine too (in fact, they'd be just as helpful).  ^___^

I'll start with a text-only list (I'll add pictures once I'm on a computer that'll let me access Photobucket... -_-)

Actually, you're post reminded me that I had this topic out there!  Even forgot to add the pictures, although I'll still have to handle that later!  ^-^'

Looked up RPM (Red Hat Package Manager?) and it doesn't seem to be an actual OS, so I'm afraid an RPM-tan won't make the cut.  Xebian, however, while falling more in line with Console-tans, can probably be squeezed in.  ^__-

Okay, I'll get to it shortly.  ^___^
I will eventually draw an OpenBSD, FreeBSD and NetBSD (a trio that follows/protects Plan 9 and Inferno-tan for reasons not obvious yet), but since the former two exist in so many forms I guess I'll need to pick-n-choose from the creme-of-the-crop.   ^__^

I don't know what you think, but I don't like a lot "Puffy". She looks too boyish (specially face) and the hair its too "spiky". But that's just a personal opinion

I can concur to a small degree, but I think the tough girl theme could be useful nevertheless.

Likely the form of my rendition will be based in part on the Puffy rendition, but the details will be reworked.

I like Puffy-tan because she does not look in a way, which only is cute. And her hair must be spiky since it reminds of the BSD-Mascot Puffy.

BTW, regardless of how the original OpenBSD fits people's tastes, you have to credit the original artist for the attempt at creating a new OS-tan.  That kind of participation is what keeps the OS-tan phenomenon living!  ^.^

BTW: I tried to make a Minix-tan and failed. My idea was that she looks a bit like DOS-tan, but flies on a magic carpet, which is actually a floppy-disk and has the size of CE-tan.

And this is perfect, since Minix is one of the many OS-tans that I don't have my own preconcept for whatsoever (others include BeOS, VIC-20 and Pilot OS [from the Xerox Star]).  

If at first you don't succeed, please keep trying as often as necessary.  ^v^

The AppleII-tan I'm working on now met with a very unseemly false start, but I'll redraw her face as often as necessary until it comes out the way I envision her.  -v-

If you already have Minix-tan sketched, that's great.  Since you already have a base to work with, all you'd really need to do are adjustments (little by little) to make her look the way you envision.  ^v^

If you need any help, feel free to ask.  In order to help propagate independent artistry (especially for new OS-tans), I'd be willing to support you 110%!!!!  ^V^

Not bad! Needs a little polishing, but I like the concept!

To explain it a bit: She has no breasts to speak of since her system requirements are very low (4 MB Ram for the newest version). The logo on her T-shirt is the logo from minix3.org. The red book is "Operating Systems - design and implementation" by  Andrew S.Tanenbaum.  I wanted her to wear wooden shoes (she is dutch afterall), but couldn't design that.

Even if it's an early version, is pretty good.  And certainly has more than enough concepts in place to work with.  ^__^

There are several ways we can go from here as you continue work on Minix-chan....  -v-

1) Let us know what drawing program you're using and the system your on.  Do you prefer raster or vactor graphics?

2) Are you ultimately aiming for an Anime-style look (big eyes, simplistic, heavily-shaded) or a Western-style (small eyes, detailed, light shading)?  (If the former, we can offer you guidelines, but of course sketching over existing Anime characters (especially their faces) is great practice.)

3) Likewise, sketching over the props that you want is also good practice too:



Once you have your rendition ready, it's simply a matter of playing with lines to get the angle you're looking for (in this case, vector graphics are useful).

4) Putting the complete Minix logo on her shirt is fine, but I can tell you that you might have a lot more fun finding ways of "blending" the racoon into her design as a whole.  For example, suppose she wore a bandit-style mask and racoon ears (she did, to a distant degree, "steal" from the rich [Unix], and "give" to the [then] poor [Linux]).  

5) We can both agree that she needn't have a spear, since she was built before GNU/Linux (and all the free apps that go with it).  However, I think it'd be great to have a little something on her that'd subtly tie her to her pseudo-descendant Linux.  How about changing the hair to be purple/dark blue?  (that way the case can be made that Linux-tan inherited the hair color -- but not the length -- from Minix-tan)

Minix-tan herself was not free and no Minix-code was used in Linux... so this doesn't really fit. but the racoon ears are a good idea.

The GNU-project existed before Minix and Linux, however it apparently was horribly difficult to port programs to Minix, so it's okay that she doesn't have a spear. The hair-color is a good idea.

Hehe... well I didn't mean "steal" literally (in actuality, system x influenced system y which in turn influenced system z that everyone loves and adores to this day).  But glad the racoon ears sold.  ^.^
Considering the popularity of 2K-tan and the OSX Girls, I think it'd be an excellent marketing decision for your -tan.  ^.^

Sure, dark-blue/purple may not necessarily be a "Dutch" color, but neither is cyan or lime-green an inherently "Japanese" color (and yet you see characters with that color hair in droves!  ^.^)

Well, I'm not really sure just how closely the people at Futaba monitor the activities at Waka.  For the most part, the Waka folk just repost OS-tan and Net Character material.

But now that you phrase it that way, I see your point and it does seem suspiciously like stifling artistry.  Plagiarizing for profit or claiming someone's work as your own, I can sympathize with.  But stifling fanart strikes me as hypocritical.  If what you say is true, they could potentially take issue with the Captain's fancomic for example.  >_<

I think it's a moot point, since we require registration and thus it'd be impossible to grow to their size.  Besides, while having more people does increase chances of survival, it doesn't necessarily guarantee it.  The day participation and contributions start to wane at any of those forums, you can be sure it'll die a slow and painful death as people find newer and better things to spend their time on.  ^___^;

I think we're just right.  Strong enough to be a beacon for new OS-tan fans, but not terribly overbearing to drive them away.  ^^'
Still, someone like Linux-tan or Pitkin should probably have an opinion on this.  ^__^

Ultimately, it's really up to the individuals whether they want to participate or not.  I know I've been through my share of wasted time and talent, so I would be the last person to blame them if they prefer not to take the risk in joining.

If you want to be systematic about it, however, here's some food for thought that I think could help influence the success of this board:

1) Patience -- when I posted full-body Amiga-tan and my subsequent -tans, I did so without expecting a tidal wave of praise.  (I did get quite a bit, but not enough to fill the hearts of people who dishearten easily.)  Patience paid off, as I slowly but surely got more people interested in my work, especially you and -Tux.  The same holds true with the forum if we provide the incentives for people to come/return.  It won't happen overnight, but it will happen eventually.
Which leads on to....

2) Participation -- you're no stranger to this, as it's not rare to see your name appear on every conceivable thread.  ^__^'
But in order to get that bustling feel, people must make an effort to post more.  Even if it's just single sentences, it could mean a whole lot if it means motivating others to follow the herd.  In fact, short posts are probably ideal,... The HUGE posts left by the Captain and I on the PalmOS-tan forum probably SCARED a lot of people from posting, even though it's clear by the view count that it's gotten a lot of people to visit it.

3) Content -- it is, after all, an OS-tan forum.  We can get by just talking about our favorite -tans for a while, but sooner or later we're gonna get bored.  And new pictures of our favorite OS-tans can only go so far.  That's why it's pivotal that we create our own content, instead of waiting for it to come to Japan.  The Captain should be working on his comic.  Darknight should be praised for drawing all his 95-tan renditions.  SleepyD, his 2K-tan and future fantastic awesome OS/2-tan rendition!  ^v^  And Kami-Tux, for going the full mile and introducing Minix-tan to this cruel and heartless world.
Now the torch is passed on to you.  ^__^
Even if you can't draw, just draw.... Anything..... Draw so much, that you'll eventually get good at it!  ^v^
Study, or cheat if you have to like I do,...!
Or collage...!  Compose....!  Produce music videos...!  Storytell....!
Anything to keep the flame of interest lit!  ^0^

4) Focus -- make sure we have clearly defined goals to pursue so that we don't lose focus.  I've already lost one OS-tan forum to obsessive and unrelated RP'ing by 99% of its members, and I'd hate it if visitors were discouraged simply because OS-tan content was lacking (an irony considering we'd tout this as an "OS-tan forum").  I know that repels me from Waka a little, since the discussion seems fairly mindless and no effort is made to do anything constructive with this Os-tan phenomenon.  
There have been several goals stated here, thus far; I can name the following:

   - Create the Captain's fancomic
   - Make the Gallery the greatest OS-tan image repository
   - Create a new and more enticing web domain/site name
   - Create new OS-tans.

Choose one or two and do whatever it takes to help carry it out into fruition.  Once you're working on something constructive that you like, it immediately becomes a hobby.  And as you know from research, hobbies help keep the mind invigorated, and the soul curious and content.  (Ask any fellow coin-collector.... ^v')

5) Aesthetics -- well, this is more Linux-tan's domain, but it wouldn't hurt to enhance the OS-tan theme to this forum.  Fortunately, it's no imageboard, where after a certain number of posts your material gets lost into oblivion.  But it CAN get rather crowded in these directories, and very easy for potentially fun threads to get buried and forgotten (the fact that only the most popular threads are pulled up first doesn't help).  Moreover, the site still has a generic look-and-feel of a forum, and the Off-Topic discussion section seems to dwarf the OS-tan one.  
If, on the other hand, you wanted to advance the OS-tan theme, you could really get creative in how you design the forum areas (assuming time and technology permits).  Windows-tan discussion area could have an XP desktop theme, the Mac-tan area an OSX-theme, the Linux-area a KDE theme.  The Off-topic discussions could be reworded and remodeled to fit the OS-tan theme if this is desirable (Videogames section could be an "embassy" of sorts, since Videogame-tans aren't OS-tans).  We could develop our own custom smilies featuring our favorite -tan, so that Darknight could interactively have 95-tan "swipe" at us with her katana.  Even the gallery could be revised to make it look like the massive repository that it is, and not simply another forum folder.

I know perhaps I'm speaking my mind off more than I should on the subject (after all, it's not my site, and further more I'm not one to talk as I left my OWN website unfinished).  Still, I'd be willing to work on [say] those smilies if it meant improving our "survivability".  The question now, though, is how many others would be interested in participating in such a thing?

That reminds me of a few weeks ago. When I started, I posted on a few topics to test the water. As I gained confidence, I posted more and more. One day, I posted on every section, and for several hours, hundreds of posts were made. Now I post from time to time. I'll keep posting during the school year, albeit less often during the day.

Don't mean to bring severity to what was once mostly comedy, but comparatively-speaking the Window-tans have had it very easy (post 3.1-tan, at least), and continue to be rich, popular, comfortable and more-or-less intact.  By contrast, the vintage -tans have lived through a lot, having had their fair share of triumphs and disappointments, prosperity and bankruptcy, unions and separations.....
