Title: NeoN-ARMADA (Demon Overlord is Building a Computer)
Post by: NejinOniwa on June 07, 2011, 08:32:11 PM
SOOO...

I've recently had to face the sad fact that even though LAMBDA is still a beast of a computer in her own right, she Is Not a fully fledged gaming rig. Gaming is very possible, but you can't simply boost every setting to the max and expect it not to lag on newer games; in addition, cabling can be a bitch, and I bought LAMBDA to have as a laptop, after all - nowadays, getting her loose and moving her requires annoying amounts of time.

Which leads us to the fact that it's about time I got myself replacement for DELTA (who is in a state of unusability due to her PSU being knocked out, in addition to her old battle scars). The tentative name for this beast - NeoN-ARMADA. (As for the name - Ar-Ma-Da. Screw letters, I'm joining the Red Team now.)

The planned setup is looking something like this:
CASE: Antec DF-85 (For your pleasure, /OSC/, it's STYLISH AS FUCK.)
MOBO: Gigabyte-990FXA-UD7 (AM3+ YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEAH)
GFX: 2GB Asus Radeon EAH6950 DCII/2DI4S/2GD5 (What's that you say? A simple bios mod upgrades it to a 6970? REALLY NOW.)
RAM: 4x4Gb of 1600MHz Corsair RAM (Extrapolating - we lieks it. Why aren't there any 8Gb sticks out anyway?)
PSU: Antec TruePower Quattro 850W (The unused portion of all dat wattage is going to fuel my ego.)

Add to that a Seagate disk, some SSD drive, and of course, the tip of the spearhead - a nice, flashy-as-fuck Bulldozer chip.

SO - DOES /OSC/ WANT? IS /OSC/ JELLY? AND HOW THE FUCK AM I GOING TO SCROUNGE UP THE CASH FOR THIS, ANYWAY?

With an SSD, go with a OCZ Vertex 3; they're the fastest on the market last I checked, and the one I plan on buying soon.

Look at me
Now Look at your computer
Now back to me
Back to your computer
Now back to me

I'm what your computer could be if it was using 6 monitors, 3 graphic cards, 2 x6 core processors, 2 SSDs on Raid0, oh and one more thing,

I heard you like to back up your awesome porn collection so we slapped 10 drives in this bitch and set them all to Raid1 so you can have a back up of your back up of your back up of your back up of your back up of your back up of your back up of your back up of your back up of your back up of your main storage drive!

is it computer building season? :\

and what's the obsession with seagate drives? :\

case, compared it with amazon and newegg (http://www.excaliberpc.com/597098/antec-dark-fleet-df-85-mini-itx.html)
board, this one was tricky, since you didn't provide enough details (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128490)
whatever "gfx" stands for.
RAM:[url=http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820233143]I (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814121431&cm_re=ASUS_EAH6950_DCII%2f2DI4S%2f2GD5-_-14-121-431-_-Product) found (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820145347) three. (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820145312)
power: they didn't have yours, (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817371012) so here are the (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817371032) closest ones i found. (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817371039)

EDIT: i totaled up the cheapest possibility here, and it comes to $953 (and that's being shipped here; if you were to have the case shipped to sweden it would jack up the price by about $150.)

theoretically, if we ordered all of it the first day you got here, it might make it here before you leave....

*Looks at the case*

So, ARMADA is going to be to 2k-tan the Desktop as the laser screwdriver is compared to the sonic screwdriver?

Full tower case? oh dang bro

and yeah, I thought it odd newegg has no 8 gig sticks. Probably because they're ridiculously expensive, but newegg does have some ridiculously expensive stuff.

Get this for your SSD http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820227581

as i sat here reading the reviews on that giant flash drive, i thought of all the things i could do with that money.

i could likely rent an apartment in boston, with groceries and travel expenses.....for a couple years.

If I had that kind of money for that SSD, I'd be able to move my master plan along to it's final stage

I'd suggest going with this one (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820227706) instead; it's a lot cheaper

It's supposed to be funny.

Sure, it's probably the fastest hardrive in the world (it's like 4x faster than even the fastest SSD) but there's no reason to put something that fast in a computer of today.

ssd are still new technology; what is the significance?

a 250gd cost 500.00 last summer; save it for your next build.

The price is indeed going down, bit by bit. So yeah, save your SSD buying till your Bulldozer buying.

But I have to say, SSD is not that new.

@kriz: it's called used cars. :3 the one i saw a few years back (a working 46' pontiac streamliner sedan) was $3500. needed new upholstry, but that's not really an issue (it didn't really "need" it, but the back looked kinda like a sheet had been tossed over it and then stapled into place).
plus, my dad promised my sister $1000 towards a car, so with that we might be able to get her a CERTIFIED PRE-OWNED car. 8)

nej srsly needs to comment before this turns into topicless. >>;

Be careful with that.  It was only the initial batch of cards (read reference designs, not OEM variations), and if you just plain up flashed it with a 6970 BIOS, you'd fry the card as the components couldn't handle the higher speeds.  Go to techPowerUp.com and look for the 6950 BIOS with the unlocked shaders only.  There's a guide floating around the forum somewhere.  Make sure to ask them if your card can actually do it, first.

Modded bioses are floating around everywhere, yes. I'm not an orange. And the ratings page for the card itself on pricehunter says so, so even if it's not by every and all means a definite yes, it's pretty close.

Also lol dat SSD cluster.

I'm not going to patch in on all that much SSD, I'm pretty sure. Want to save some of my hard-earned cash, after all. Prolly getting a 120GB'er and filling the rest with hardies.

Also, by the time Bulldozer (AKA AM3+) is released, AMD will be 3 generations behind again.  Bulldozer was designed to compete with pre-Sandybridge i-series CPUs, and what with Intel releasing Ivybridge soon AMD's going to be left in the dust again.

Not that I'm hating on AMD or anything, I use a Phenom II x4 965 Black Edition after all...

Important, boi - AM3+ is the slot, while Bulldozer is the architecture. Important to note.

AND
Nobody knows exactly how beefy the bulldozers are gonna be (though if the name implies anything, yeah) in comparison to current Intels. True, they won't bust the highest crust of performance chips, but they are aiming to get into the midrange again - and a midrange with 12 effective cores and a speed around 3ghz or so sounds pretty nifty for me. Add to that the fact that AM3+ will stay compatible with future generations of red team chips for a long while, in contrast to Intel who probably are just gonna drop their slot standards by new year's or so, AND the fact that you get a lot more bang per buck - I'm not fanboying, but the red team is looking pretty damn good for my current needs.

I know that.  I just said that in case you weren't aware.

With regards to the forward-compatibility of that slot: everybody expected AM3 to be forwards-compatible.  If I want Bulldozer, I'm gonna have to buy a new board because AM3+ is incompatible with it.  So don't expect AM3+ to be forward-compatible, either.

AM3+ will most definitely stay compatible longer than the current Intel slots will, if only for the fact that it's brand new. Main point however - It's Cheaper.

though i don't feel relevant in this conversation,
if you'd like to save money, it might be cheaper to ship some of the stuff to the us, so you could buy it while you're here. .__.;

I have been thinking of it - we'll see, but it might be a pain to haul it through customs on the way home, so I dunno.

customs only really gives you shit if it's edible. that's why one christmas my grandma mailed us smoked meat and we never got it. :\

if they want to give you shit about taxes and whatnot, i'd be willing to forge a birthday card and call it a "present" >_>;

IC. Oh well. I've been thinking of it for a while, but I dunno how much space it'll take up - besides, parts can be pretty fragile, and airport luggage handlers aren't exactly known to be gentle all the time...oh well.

Some guy from the netherlands did the same thing when heading home from Florida, they took his suitcase and ripped everything out not looking at what it really was (Threw the mobo on the ground) he kept telling them it was computer hardware but they ruined it anyway, dude went home with a broken mobo, destroyed CPU, the RAM looked fine, and a hdd that was obviously broken... I recommend just ordering the parts to your home.
