I'll get a list of my characters on the first one a little later (Off the top of my head, I remember than Pentium is the strongest on there), but here's a rundown of my characters on the 2nd one (The PSP port of it, to be exact), which I'm up to chapter 6 on:

- Adell: Lv15
- Rozalin: Lv16
- Tink: Lv5 (Funny in the cut scenes, but not that useful in battle)
- Hanako: Lv13
- Taro: Lv16
- Undertaker (Togabito): Lv20
- Gardenia (Archer): Lv20
- Crystal (Lady Fighter): Lv18
- Cloud (Fighter): Lv15
- Emerald (Magic Knight): Lv17
- Rodney (Red Skull): Lv20

salicia: lv 25
micalic: lv 23
ren, jukasas, lucerne: lv 20

Yeah; on the PSP version, she's one of the free downloadable characters, and unique for being the only one you don't have to fight in order for her to join you (Thus, you can use her as a backdoor to get the rest to join you as you buy them; having a small army of level 100 characters early into the game to fall back onto should things get ugly, I had to do this once; using Pleinair as a brick wall while Peach healed everybody else)
Title: Re: Disgaea
Post by: Chocofreak13 on May 05, 2011, 11:48:34 PM
sounds like a good strategy. :3 what does she typically use in battle?

also, a good strategy for training: when in the item world, look for invincibility panels. then stick your weakest characters on them, and let the enemies swarm. (please note that if there are any brawler class enemies they could knock you off these panels.) it got lucerne from level 2 to 20 in about 15 minutes. -w-

She specializes in guns, but can really use anything you give her.

Yeah, training in Item World works well. I should really train there a little more often...
Title: Re: Disgaea
Post by: Chocofreak13 on May 06, 2011, 12:41:08 PM
it's especially awesome to train there, since not only do you level your characters, but you level the item as well. plus you get upgraded items by doing the bonuses. i got a bow for Alice that gave her an attack of almost 1000 (and at lv 15, that's kinda impressive).

EDIT: i leveled up my weaker characters (a little bit) and have instituted a new policy that all healers get a mage or a skull as their pupil. thus, i have these 4 newbies:
Kesshouko, prism mage
Hoshiko, Star skull
Vasilissa, blue mage
Chyou, green mage

- Haruhi (Green Mage): Lv95
- Mikuru (Red Mage): Lv95
- Yuki (Blue Mage): Lv95
- Pit (Scout): Lv95
- Peach (Cleric): Lv95

*applause*

giuseppe has become my most ambitious mage, as he now has a demon rank of 3 and a counter rating of 1. he is also moving up quickly (giving him a prism mage for a pupil was a smart move). i'm considering making another new policy of giving all my mages a counter rating. :3
Title: Re: Disgaea
Post by: Nichi on May 07, 2011, 09:36:58 PM
Penti-chan doesn't have a counter rating, but a demon rank of 6. I tried to go for 7, but that dragon mopped the floor with me.

As for Crystal, she is not only higher leveled than Laharl, but she also has better equipment and base stats than him, and I believe her demon rank was 5 with a counter rating of 2.
Title: Re: Disgaea
Post by: Chocofreak13 on May 07, 2011, 11:57:14 PM
niiiice. -w-

i mainly wanted to up their counter rating cause i was sick of them just taking it like a bitch. they should fight back. >:[

i found an article on unlocking all the classes in disgaea 1.
http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/2829948/how_to_unlock_every_character_class_pg3.html?cat=19

most of them sound INSANE, but since i'm INSANE, i wanna do it. -w-
Title: Re: Disgaea
Post by: Nichi on May 08, 2011, 12:32:55 AM
If I had a lot more free time and was feeling crazy, I'd probably try too.

Also, as I discovered earlier, Penti-chan is actually strong enough to take out all the foes on the Practice Map using only physical attacks. She just walks right up to one, hits it over the head while saying "Bonk!", and it's down for the count. Got to love melee-capable mages...
Title: Re: Disgaea
Post by: Chocofreak13 on May 08, 2011, 11:48:12 AM
hence why i wanted to up my mages' counter. -w-

that, and some of them have -fairly- powerful attack for their class. since i spend so much time in the item world, i might subdue some residents and move them to their staffs, to beef them up a bit.

i'm not focused on finishing anymore. it's just fun to bum around, like in harvest moon or on the second disc of FF7. -w-
Title: Re: Disgaea
Post by: Nichi on May 08, 2011, 12:54:22 PM
Yeah; even after beating it, it's still fun to screw around a bit. It's like the Pokémon games; even after you beat the Elite Four, there's still plenty left to do (You can get your team up to level 100, challenge the Battle Frontier, have a battle with friends, or try to catch all 600+ monsters if you're truly a madman)

I plan on maybe trying to get one of the alternate endings on it; after seeing 2 of them (One for accidentally losing a key battle mid-way through the game, and the other being the game's good ending)
Title: Re: Disgaea
Post by: Chocofreak13 on May 08, 2011, 01:51:06 PM
oh wow, you can keep playing after you finish the plot line? *w* useful to know. -w-

i love those games that let you just roam as you please, like elder scrolls and red dead redemption (i haven't played either, sadly, but my sister has them). disgaea almost falls into that vein, since there's so many places to go (in the item world especially) and so much to do that it feels like you have alot of freedom. :3
Title: Re: Disgaea
Post by: Nichi on May 08, 2011, 04:57:29 PM
Yeah; I sometimes enjoy those types of games, as I can revisit the same world later on just to explore and see what new things I can find, or in the case of Disgaea, attempt to beat the game using nothing but Prinnies (I haven't actually tried this, but I've considered it)
Title: Re: Disgaea
Post by: Chocofreak13 on May 09, 2011, 12:33:26 AM
that sounds badass......but wouldn't you need laharl and the like to advance the plot on certain points?
Title: Re: Disgaea
Post by: Nichi on May 09, 2011, 06:32:55 AM
I don't think so, since I have beaten some story-important battles using only my original characters, and I've heard people doing a run through the entire game with only a Majin
Title: Re: Disgaea
Post by: Chocofreak13 on May 10, 2011, 11:50:56 AM
xDD

yeah, that'd be pretty awesome. too bad that you have to fulfill insane requirements to get one. :\
Title: Re: Disgaea
Post by: Nichi on May 10, 2011, 03:48:20 PM
I don't think I'd have the patience to unlock the Majin; besides, I'm a little more into using Star Mages or Star Skulls. Non-elemental magic FTW
Title: Re: Disgaea
Post by: Chocofreak13 on May 10, 2011, 04:05:56 PM
eh, i can be a completionist, so if i ever get that far, i'll post pics. -w-

star magic is awesome, if only for the power of it (gravity ftw). however, considering the sp it eats up, i actually prefer prism magic, if only for the fact that the spells eat up less and you can target an enemy's weakness. harder to master, but easier to use. -w-

(plus, since Giuseppe has Kesshouko as his pupil, and is already a bishop, he can fight AND heal himself. -w-)
Title: Re: Disgaea
Post by: Nichi on May 10, 2011, 05:34:21 PM
Star magic does eat away a lot of MP, but I think it's worth the cost.

In a trilogy of short stories I wrote about some various battles in the first Disgaea, told from the point of view of Pentium the Star Mage, the fact that Star magic eats up a lot of energy comes up a lot; as she'll often push herself too far in battle and often pass out from exhaustion.
Title: Re: Disgaea
Post by: Chocofreak13 on May 10, 2011, 07:25:52 PM
i almost made a fancomic about my disgaea characters, but i backed out at the last minute. might try again. :3
Title: Re: Disgaea
Post by: Nichi on May 10, 2011, 08:31:28 PM
You should try again; wither it be sprite based or hand drawn
Title: Re: Disgaea
Post by: Chocofreak13 on May 11, 2011, 09:51:18 PM
hand-drawn. i'm bad at drawing on the computer, and since this was more serious than a 4-koma, drawing all those sprites wouldn't be viable. >__<

today's play was a little sad; i was going to train my youngest ice mage, Vasilissa, in the item world, but she died on the first round because of a geo panel effect. :[ (i could just picture Laharl screaming at her :\ )
Title: Re: Disgaea
Post by: Nichi on May 11, 2011, 10:51:39 PM
Sounds like your comics would be a bit like the Disgaea stories I've written. In fact, I'm currently working on a sequel to that trilogy of short stories; which follows the events of the 2nd game from Crystal's point of view.

Also, it always sucks when a character you're trying to level up ends up getting killed in battle
Title: Re: Disgaea
Post by: Chocofreak13 on May 15, 2011, 12:37:41 AM
sounds cool. post some links sometime. :3

and yeah, earlier i was leveling up, and hoshiko was the last one below level 10, and just as he was about to level up, he died. >__<

they need to have a revive item or something.... :\

oh, and i'm coming up with new direction for my game. thinking i'm gonna start subduing specialists and moving them to my characters's items to increase attack, defense, hp, sp, intelligence, etc. that, combined with my plan of giving every healer a mage/skull and everyone who doesn't already have it at least 1 counterattack, is gonna make for a super-powered team. -w-

plus, i like searching out the weird residents. i killed an aeronaut today, and i'm not even sure what that is! >:3
Title: Re: Disgaea

if you start making comics, a website called smackjeeves hosts webcomics for free. :3
Title: Re: Disgaea

I've made a few sprite comics (Similar to Neglected Mario Characters in style), but the few that survive fall under Old Shame for how badly written they where
Title: Re: Disgaea

lol. i'd say "don't be ashamed of your art", but when i look at my old drawings, i cringe. ^^;
Title: Re: Disgaea
Post by: Nichi on May 16, 2011, 10:22:03 PM
With my stories, even though I've been writing fairly actively since summer 2000, I usually don't acknowledge anything prior to December 2003; which was when I began writing what I consider my first decent story (It has its share of problems, but I feel it has aged pretty well). Anyway, back onto the original subject...

I really need to do some more training on Disgaea 2; that last map I took on was pretty brutal, between the powerful foes and the tons of Geo Effects in play, which made navigating to the one Geo Panel you needed to destroy to start an epic chain reaction a pain. Also, I should probably play more of the 3rd one; I haven't even finished the first episode on that one, but then again, I don't care much for some of the things they did when making it.
Title: Re: Disgaea
Post by: Chocofreak13 on May 16, 2011, 10:46:37 PM
yeah, sometimes the sequels lose the epicness of the first game. which is why i never played any of the sequels. :\

i already mentioned training in the item world. unless they don't have that in the third game, i'd say that sounds like a good place to start. :3

you might also consider upgrading their weapons/armor, upping their counterattack, and revising your strategy? :3
Title: Re: Disgaea
Post by: Nichi on May 17, 2011, 07:21:19 AM
The 2nd game is actually pretty good. However, the 3rd one changed up how characters learn new spells and techniques (Instead of learning them from leveling up like in the previous two, you learn them by going to a special shop and spending Mana to unlock it), which just doesn't seem right to me.
Title: Re: Disgaea
Post by: Chocofreak13 on May 18, 2011, 12:14:45 PM
eeww. that's so dumb. :\

i'd like to play today :3
Title: Re: Disgaea
Post by: Nichi on May 18, 2011, 05:03:04 PM
If it wasn't for the fact I like the characters in Disgaea 3 (Mao being my favorite), I likely would have traded it in by now; that feature is just too annoying. Hopefully, Disgaea 4 drops that feature and returns to letting your characters learn new techniques by leveling up; although, it'd be hard to complain, since my sister is buying the collector's edition for me when it's available.
Title: Re: Disgaea
Post by: Chocofreak13 on May 19, 2011, 04:27:26 PM
it's weird, since in the beginning even having a disgaea 2 was odd. it never seemed like the type of game to have sequels. :\

if i still rented games, i'd rent disgaea 2 just to try, since i'm pretty sure that they made it for the ps2. but knowing me, it'd probably frustrate me after 5 minutes and i'd say "screw this", like i did with final fantasy 8.
Title: Re: Disgaea
Post by: Nichi on May 19, 2011, 05:14:05 PM
Yeah, Disgaea 2 is available on the PS2, although it's PSP remake is the best version you can possibly get of it (It brings in some of the features from 3 that did work well). I'd suggest finding a way to try it out; even the PS2 version expands enough on the gameplay of the original to make it feel fresh (Although, they did make a few changes to make certain characters and weapons less game-breaking; like putting limitations on the firing range of the guns, to make the bows seem more useful).
Title: Re: Disgaea
Post by: Chocofreak13 on May 19, 2011, 09:08:26 PM
eh. it's not a pressing thing for me. and i'd wanna try it before i buy it.

also, unless i REALLY want a game/system, i'm not going to buy that game/system. for example, the only thing that i was looking for as an excuse to buy a PS3 was the evangelion news app, and that's gone out of business. >__<
Title: Re: Disgaea
Post by: Nichi on May 19, 2011, 09:15:54 PM
I can understand; why buy a system if there aren't enough games you're interested in for it?

After all, I remember going out of my way to get a Dreamcast after all the good things I heard about it's library of games, only to find 3 that I really liked on it out of all the ones I tried (Those games being Sonic Adventure, Sonic Adventure 2, and Phantasy Star Online V2; which are available on other consoles now).
Title: Re: Disgaea
Post by: Chocofreak13 on May 19, 2011, 09:34:10 PM
lol. still, you have bragging rights with that. -w-

been meaning to play recently, but been distracted by life.

you made any progress with any of your games?
Title: Re: Disgaea
Post by: Nichi on May 19, 2011, 10:10:50 PM
I haven't gotten around to playing more, because of multiple things eating away my free time. Although, I plan on trying to get back to Disgaea 2 soon...
Title: Re: Disgaea
Post by: Chocofreak13 on May 19, 2011, 10:23:42 PM
let me know when you do. -w-

one of the things distracting me recently was an urge to make comics; i'd like to restart the disgaea one but the more and more i think of it the less and less plot it has. :\
Title: Re: Disgaea
Post by: Nichi on May 19, 2011, 10:48:22 PM
Try doing what I do; have a text file or even a plain notepad to throw around some ideas in, and once you decide on one that will work for your comic, start writing it
Title: Re: Disgaea
Post by: Chocofreak13 on May 19, 2011, 11:28:40 PM
eh, i HAD a plot, but it seems to have drifted off.

and as for random ideas, almost all of mine occur away from the computer. as a result, most of them have been written on scrap paper (ace's high, my main comic right now, was written on a napkin as we were driving out of a bertucci's parking lot :\).
Title: Re: Disgaea
Post by: Nichi on June 03, 2011, 07:56:58 PM
Well, I've finally gotten a chance to get back to Disgaea 2. I'm in the middle of a run through Item World right now; nearing the 20th floor.

I was using this as an opportunity to level up some of my weaker characters, although I'm now down to just Pentium, Yendor, and Peach, aside from the 4 downloaded characters that I'm saving as a last resort. 2k-tan went down on the 11th floor, and it was pretty rough from there; being unable to exploit the ice weaknesses on any foes, but at least Penti-chan could pick up the slack with star magic...until she ran low on MP and MP restoring items. I'm now on the 19th floor; taking a break to do some other things before heading back in and finishing it up.
Title: Re: Disgaea
Post by: Chocofreak13 on June 04, 2011, 12:35:00 AM
i hate that, when the weaker characters die when they're supposed to be leveling up? ><; it's like, why did i go there in the first place?

when things get too hairy, i usually call on laharl. that, or when i get so fed up with everything. ><;
Title: Re: Disgaea
Post by: Nichi on June 04, 2011, 08:02:30 AM
When I'm playing the 2nd one and things get rough, I send in the "elite four" of my team; the downloaded characters (Pleinair, Sapphire, Marona, and Demon Lady Hanako), who are all level 100.

However, even they couldn't stand up to Etna when I had to fight her earlier in the game. Until you've looped through the game several times and have your characters around level 1000, this battle is the Disgaea equivalent to the Kobiyashi Maru.
Title: Re: Disgaea
Post by: Chocofreak13 on June 04, 2011, 04:59:32 PM
sounds scary. ;^; i wouldn't like to attempt it.
Title: Re: Disgaea
Post by: Nichi on June 04, 2011, 06:18:48 PM
Sadly, you do have to attempt it to move the story forward. Until your characters are powerful enough to defeat her (Which I think is a trigger for an alternate ending), failure is the only option.

There's a reason why I had Crystal strike down all my magic users; just to speed up my inevitable defeat, as Etna seemed to take her time picking off my units.
Title: Re: Disgaea
Post by: Chocofreak13 on June 04, 2011, 06:42:33 PM
:\

the only stratagy i could think of for that situation (other than what you mentioned) would be to get so many prinnies....and level them up...and throw them all.

and after writing this, i remembered that there's a cap on how many people you can bring out during a battle. ><;;
too bad, as that plan would have been pretty badass...
