Title: The Political Compass
Post by: Pitkin on April 13, 2011, 05:39:39 AM
Inflammable thread time~ <3 No, just kidding, my idea was not to spark political debate (heaven forbid) but to link to a site I've visited a few times since I found it years and years ago.

http://www.politicalcompass.org

As I pointed out, the idea is not to provoke political bickering, but I was simply interested in how others here positioned on the libertarian-authoritarian and the traditional "left-right" scales. No hating allowed here!

Anyone interested, take the test and post toast of the resulting graph. x) I'm not implying the test is 100% accurate or that we should form strong opinions on anyone located differently than ourselves, it's mostly for fun and my love for graphs and stats that made me post this. Honestly. ._.

My own result was well... in accordance to my own idea of political location - flaming liberal:

Economic Left/Right: -6.62
Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -7.03

If enough people post their results, maybe we can make a summary picture with everyone's results in the same graph too~ *total geek ._.*

edit:

OSC crowd graph:

Legend: Kri(zonar), Sim(onorged), Ste(wartsage), Lea(f), Ale(x S), Alf(onso), Bel(la), Nej(inOniwa), Pen(ti-chan), Coc(kleshell), Cho(cofreak13), (Pip)Pit(kin), Raf(faele the Amigan).

The user whose name is hidden under Nejin's blob is Raf. The three blobs in the bottom left of the cloud are Coc (topmost), Cho (leftmost) and Pit. The blob between the three-blob group and Nej is Pen.

I remember taking this in high school Government.

Economic Left/Right: -2.75
Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: 0.26

I refuse to believe I've become any less authoritarian (last time I was nearer the pope on the authoritarian axis) or socially liberal; probably just more ambivalent to the questions.  Also: Okie from Muskogee is satire in the vein of, say, Uneasy Rider.  No matter how Merle Haggard may have apparently changed politically in recent memory. Annnnd there are still no American political parties for me (according to the chart).

Slightly Authoritarian and almost in the middle, yes, that describes me well, really.

@Choco: Somewhat. Not everyone has posted yet... I think.
Pitkin, Bella, stuart, Choco, Nejin, new guy mac enthusiast; we're missing Aurora.

It's really a combination of apathy towards others and dislike/distrust towards authority. Which add up to 'Leave me alone, I want to game/read/etc."

Actually, most of us are more on the libertarian side, if that has any importance.

I was referring to mine, as I'm unique with being slightly Authoritarian as well. (Stew's is close, but mine is, like, obviously authoritarian)

I also like my nickname from Alex  8)

and yes, Aurora should have some funs.

Actually, most of us are more on the libertarian side, if that has any importance.

According to the great compendium of Hacker Folklore that is the Jargon File, most hackers (that's in the OLD SCHOOL sense of being a programmer/enthusiast, not cybercriminal) are left libertarian-leaning and anti-authoritarian. From the entry on politics (http://www.catb.org/jargon/html/politics.html):

Quote from: Jargon FileThere is a strong libertarian contingent which rejects conventional left-right politics entirely. The only safe generalization is that hackers tend to be rather anti-authoritarian; thus, both paleoconservatism and 'hard' leftism are rare. Hackers are far more likely than most non-hackers to either (a) be aggressively apolitical or (b) entertain peculiar or idiosyncratic political ideas and actually try to live by them day-to-day.

(For the record, I fall into category A), aggressively apolitical.) -w-

That seems to describe most of the people who've responded here quite well so far... could OSC be a den of old-time-hacker spirited people? x3

If I may be a bit silly for a moment, I find it interesting that the three people who identified as authoritarian-leaning are more into "corporate computing" - there's Kriz, who's an Apple fan, Red, who's a huge Windows fan, and Stew, who's a... classic IBM/CDC/DEC fan? That would have made him diametrically opposed to the hacker culture back in the day.... and now I'm rambling and will stop now.

Well, if one would count the entire Pirate movement into a new age of hackerism - which I certainly would - that falls true for me, at least...

This thread might be interesting OwO

An interesting theory. :3 On the apolitical-political setup, I'm definitely on the more political side, though I stay away from party politics as much as possible. But well, the fact that there are more than two serious parties here, makes it easier to find something for myself. :/

I remember taking that test some time ago. I should try it again (to see how much or little I've changed), but am not sure how accurate it'd be since there's no neutral option for any of the questions.

time changes people. and the subtle cues can shift the dot so much, answering "agree" instead of "strongly agree" can have such a huge effect. :0

I made the political-compass test, but many questions are "american" only and don't reflect european points of view... There is a strong social component in the european right, and I do not believe in the self regulating market as recent economy scandals are the proof that market should be regulated by laws and controlled by joint commissions of governments, common citizens shareholders, enterprises and economy experts, so I appear to be shifted in the left camp...

THE PLOT THICKENS.

1) Go back and check your political compass result. Make a note of where you fall. (You can use the Economic Left/Right or
Social Libertarian/Authoritarian listings, or just count out the spaces.)
2) Look at the below image, and find your place on it.

For instance, on my most recent test I fell 5 spaces from the left and 7 spaces from the bottom, putting me in the territory of "Libertarian Socialism", which is pretty accurate IMO.

For the record, here is a crowd chart of OSC, using every time the most recent available score (2011, 2013, 2015) for each member. If anybody has a problem with their score showing here with others, just message me and I'll remove it! Also, I'll try to update the picture when somebody's score gets updated.

I also made graphs with single user's scores from earlier and later, showing the evolution of the scores between the tests. I'll post them later this week if somebody's interested. ^^
