Post by: panda on December 20, 2005, 05:24:06 PM
Noticed a mess up in a game? when some things not quite right? Like how Nazi solders in WWII games look like dirty bums that have a stick in there ass?

I stopped paying attention to the WWII games, cus they all seem to be blending togeather.  Admitibly tho, nazis are a favorable opponent (shooting at the very icon of hate and villany is better then say shooting the cops in GTA, the icons of protection and justice)  And personaly Id rather shoot a pissed off looking nazi then a happy one.

Maybe it just the marine in me talking but normaly its technical errors I pick up.  Blast radius on explosives, high caliber rounds not penetrating doors, models reloading wroung or not having a proper firing stance..

For example: Half Life Opposing force.  One of my favorite games back in the day but the blatent lack of reseach was often hard to bare.  No marine, now or ever, wears berrets.  If you go in combat, your sleaves would not be rolled up, especialy if your wearing a gas mask. If your wearing a gas mask you expect to meet chemical or biological hazards, which you would want to keep off work skin.. so sleaves down.  Marines do not use MP5's, those are a 9mm weapon that cops use because it dosent penetrate and you dont have to worry about hitting innocents through walls, Marines use peircing rounds because they plan on fighting enemies with body armor at the very least.  The Offspery (the plane/helo) that the marines are repelling out of has the door in the rear, not the sides like a Huey.  Also, marines have AH-1 Cobras, not AH-64 apatches, which are exclusive to the better funded army.  Also, a corpral (like the main character of op for) is only E-4 and wouldnt be in charge of very much of anything, let alone entire teams or anyone he comes across.  They cirtanly wouldnt call a corpral (an enlisted rank) Sir which is reserved for officers.  And another mix match between marine and army is the Medic. Marines dont have Medics, they have corpsmen who are attached to the marines from the navy. essentialy the same thing but the title itself is enough. Speaking of titles, and self resepecting marine would take offence to being called Soldier. Soldier implys army which all us marines know they are harder faster stronger better trained but poorly equiped.  Marines throw them selves on grenades to save their buddies, soldiers joined to get 60,000 for collage.

As you can see, the expressions of nazis, I have never paid attention to, but the technical aspects of war are painfully obviose to me.

yea, the WWII are blending togeather.
"Maybe it just the marine in me talking but normaly its technical errors I pick up. Blast radius on explosives, high caliber rounds not penetrating doors, models reloading wroung or not having a proper firing stance.. " Yea, Don't you just hate it? I going to be a cadet with the local police force, so I'll have more knowlage, but being around guns and police and ex-military, I've picked a few things up.
I think the only fairly good game out is Battel Field 2. and Day of Defeat Source.

when they try to be realistic is when i cant stand it, but if they are intending to bend the laws of reality it dont have any expectations for them to fail and the game turns out better.  Fore example:

Halo.  Purple smears, guys in green armor that can take on entier armies, plasma weapons.  Its all fantasy/sci fi thus I can let the technical errors go.  As long as the controls are good and flow smoothly Im happy (god I love being able to toss a frag into a room, wait for it to burst, charge in, spray bullets, close with the target run out of rounds just before you reach em and then cracking the buttstock of the rifle across their forhead taking them down before i reload.. all without changing a single weapon.)

But the varios WWII games, especialy the medal of honor series, I dont like. I like WWII history, so when you play a pearl harbor level and you shoot down 200 zeros personaly it kinda irks me.  that and the controls are usualy crap. the look stick isnt as finely tuned as halo. the character will carry an entier pack of weapons (smg, 3 pistols, grenades, a rifle, maybe an anti tank rocket/bazooka..) but to use them you have to constantly scroll thru them. to throw a grenade you have to equip the grenades and put your rifle or pistol away leaving you vulnerable to even pistol fire.  on top of that, the enemy AI or animation is normaly horrible.  the same japanese soldier running at me 30 times in a level, the exact same way, with the exact same animation really bores me.  they dont even try to out think or manuver you. they all function independently and only attack as you enter their area. its like a gauntlet of poorly animated pac man ghosts. jeeze.  Halo on the other hand the enemys are animated well and have enough of a brain coded into them that I can forget for a moment that they are game enemy, and reguard them as real opponent I must out shoot or out think to prevail.

like I said, i dont do too much of the online gaming.  I play multi player games but usualy only at lan parties or with people I know from somewhere else.  Fighting human opponents is fun and challanging but I only really enjoy it if I know the people (compitition amungs friends)  plus the ample trash talking going back and forth is always fun at a lan party (you trash talk on a random server youll piss people off or get kicked because they dont know its all in good fun)

I hate trash talk. I almost got kicked out of a local game store for "being unrully"; this kid I know (whos sexist, racist and biist) was trash talking only to me out of a group of about 6. I told him to shut up afew times, then  yell and asked if he liked his ass being kicked. he shut up.
I can stand a little, like "i got you with a pistol!" stuff, but this "such my balls bitch!" stuff pisses me off.

well as I said, with friends its differnt.  When Im playing dawn of war me and my buddies get into it and start talking like our races. Its fun you call your friend a "Foul smelling blaphimus heritic" and get a rebuttle like "by the powers of chaos I shall swollow your soul!" or something equaly weird.  I dont mean like.. yelling you suck, or stuff like that.

Also in DoD, when you reload, you don't use the total rounds that other games do, you know, the ones were you have the total rounds, and you reload regardless of loading the clip. In DoD you just use clips, so if you still have rounds in a clip, and you reload, you don't get to reuse those clips.
