Title: Aurora's new drawing thread
Post by: Aurora Borealis on June 22, 2010, 10:53:08 AM
I'll continue to post stuff in this thread (http://ostan-collections.net/viewtopic.php?t=1154) for OS-tan concept sketches, and put the rest of my new OS-tan stuff here.

Another historical OS-tan drawing, it's SAGE and GENIAC in 1955, playing one of their favorite pastimes:

I think this turned out well, but I'm not sure about the height differences and perspectives though. :-/

Can't help with perspective, but the height ratio looks solid.

Lil' SAGE is adorable Aurora-san!  And so is GENIAC-chan of course.  But she's lost her chance to beat GENIAC this time, perhaps distracted by her friend's drawing.

Sqeeeeeeeeeee-
eeeeeeeeeee-
eeeeeeeeee!

GENIAC and SAGE are cute deluxe. Well GENIAC is always adorable, but it's a real change of pace to see a happy-looking SAGE. ^.^

GENIAC's drawing in the corner absolutely slays me. ^//^

The perspective looks a'ight to me, and I quite like how you did the shading here... nice. :)

Thanks, both of you! It is strange seeing SAGE so happy, and sane! :)

I also have planned a drawing of the last moments SAGE and GENIAC saw each other (back in '58 was it?), and also a drawing of their recent reunion!

Here's a new picture I'm working on: A DEC-tan family portrait!

It's an early vector sketch, with THOR/PDP-1 and OpenVMS only drawn so far. VMS is wearing her old uniform again, although she's not used to it yet, so THOR is there to motivate her.

I also picked those two to be in the front, as THOR is the oldest of the DEC-tans and established the empire, and VMS is the most influential of the DEC family. And I also like how much their appearances contrast too! :)

Quote from: "Aurora"Here's a new picture I'm working on: A DEC-tan family portrait!

You are no longer Aurora-hime...

...YOU ARE KAMI-AURORAAAAAAaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa~!!!

THOR-chama's looking amazingly moe here too (you and Choco have clearly been conspiring to make her as kawaiidesu~ as possible). VMS-sama's expression is an intriguing mix of newbie-like curiosity and apprehension, but I must say she's quite the looker in that uniform. ^.^

The only criticism I have at this point is THOR's hammer, it could stand to be upsized a bit... think... like about up to her mid-chest if it was standing straight up and down.  ^^;;;
Title: Aurora's new drawing thread
Post by: Aurora Borealis on July 02, 2010, 11:42:10 AM
Thanks! :D

I was determined to make THOR-chama as cute as could be, inspired by your concept sketch of her! She is the most adorable DEC-tan, isn't she? :)

VMS also appears to be in a bit of disbelief, meeting the family founder, who turns out to be the most unassuming (but adorable!) DEC-tan! Wearing that old uniform probably also makes VMS remember the glory days, and all the fights she has had to deal with too.

Working on this right now, and used your critique, and make a bigger hammer! I guess THOR-chama is stronger than she looks... kinda like System 1-tan, the other little girl wielding a big hammer!

Another series of themed OS-tan sketches, drawn at the same time as the first IAS family pic:

These characters are modern minimalists, and represent OSes even smaller than the Damn Small OSes! However the Damn Small-tans are still the smallest of them all to live up to their name.

These are modern OSes small enough to boot from a floppy disk.

MenuetOS (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MenuetOS)
-one of the friendlier OS-tans of the CIOST.
-loyal, straightforward, efficient and resourceful.
-but introverted and hard to talk to at first.
-a strong advocate for advancing the assembly language, believing it is not a thing of the past.
-ambivalent towards open sorcery (Menuet-32 is open source but hasn't been updated recently, the more maintained Menuet-64 is closed-source)
-will teach anybody that is interested.
-works in a machine shop building and fixing electronics.
-a very fast runner.
-modern but appreciates old technology just as much.
-carries around a Swiss Army knife and wields a ray gun.

KolibriOS-tan (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/KolibriOS)
-MenuetOS-tan's daughter.
-likes working with old technology.
-free-spirited and hyper.
-fully supports and approves of open sorcery
-likes to dress up fancily.
-wields a tiny but powerful ray gun. (referencing the Kolibri pistol, the smallest firearm)
-lives mainly as a wanderer, but known to assist MenuetOS-tan and her friends with their missions.
-speaks in English and Russian.

DexOS-tan (http://royal.pingdom.com/2008/09/26/10-amazingly-alternative-operating-systems-and-what-they-could-mean-for-the-future/) (scroll down a bit in the article. The Wikipedia article was deleted due to not enough notability :( )
-very friendly and easy to talk to. (easy to install)
-energetic and playful, loves to play videogames and sports.
-is a highly customizable robot girl.
-an extremely fast runner. (designed to be the fastest OS ever)
-not very strong by default, but can be.
-is rather scatterbrained. (a modern OS that can't multitask or use a lot of memory)

Contiki-tan (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Contiki)
-usually calm and laid-back.
-adventurous, travels a lot, to meet others and do scientific research.
-a skilled surfer.
-is somehow friends with TinyOS-tan!
-friends with the Binteeji Renmei OS-tans, but lives as a wanderer.
-is 120 cm in her 'human size' form, and 20 cm in her normal form.
-can use less than 2KB of RAM.

TinyOS-tan (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TinyOS)
-is disgruntled and aggressive.
-a hi-tech super spy.
-doesn't like to travel, but does so for her missions.
-regarded as the most aggressive member of the CIOST.
-has a strict schedule. (multitasking is not preemptive, runs in a specific order)
-same height as Contiki-tan. (120 cm in human-size form, 20 cm in normal form)
-will work with others, but won't be happy about it, or make the experience pleasant!
-somehow friends with Contiki-tan.
-rivals with Tinfoil Hat Linux-tan (a rival super spy!)

This entire group.... confuses me somewhat. (I mean the actual OSes, not the -tans) ;;''

MinuetOS-tan is a long time favourite though (what with her beautiful red hair, wrench-wenchery and steampunk fashion), gotta love Kolibri since wings = awesomeness, and Contiki-tan is surprisingly... strange. (It's been ported to so many minis!) Hmm, Tiny-tan is a partial product of a DARPA project... interesting, interesting.

Gotta ask: who are those three teeny doodles of in the upper right hand area? ^_____^;;;
Title: Aurora's new drawing thread
Post by: Aurora Borealis on July 11, 2010, 12:10:55 AM
The doodles are a quick concept sketch of Contiki-tan, first concept doodle of TinyOS-tan (originally had a ponytail), and angry microchibi TinyOS-tan... plus a common expression she has on her face.

Strange group of characters?

Working on chibis of various OS-tans introduced in the "More IBM-tans" thread, here are Harvard Mark II and III in color, though I'm not fully decided on the colors.

Title: Aurora's new drawing thread
Post by: Bella on September 06, 2010, 09:14:43 PM
Seeing that I really had no ideas for Mark II's and III's colour schemes, this looks 'bout right to me.

Okay. I also want to make a chibi Mark I-tan and Mark IV to complete the family, though Mark I's outfit has so many layers, I don't know which colors you specified for her go where.

Here are a few quick'n'dirty colour maps

Mark I:

Mark IV:

Please feel free to embellish or simplify as you wish...

THANK YOOOU! I'll get to work on those chibis! :)

Their color schemes work so well, especially Mark I's, whose outfit now suddenly seems less intimidating for me to draw!

I have Mark II's bio added in the Annex Project, but still need bios and backstory for Mark I (I remember some details about her, but would like to see them again) and Mark IV. I've pieced together something for Mark III:

She was the fastest computer for her time, and lamented her fall from that status (any idea which system it was that outpaced the Mark III?), but learned that's not the end of the world. A naval captain that also had a passion for playing the drums, and would like to remind you that's a Continental Army uniform she's wearing... though she would have liked to lead a marching band!

Wait a minute! She's wearing an army uniform when she was a naval captain?! Well... She is scatterbrained (transferring data from one memory drum to another required relays that slowed down performance). Despite her good information processing abilities, something like turning a page in a book is mentally taxing.

Mark III-tan seems to be the Bunny Ears Lawyer type!
Title: Aurora's new drawing thread
Post by: Bella on September 12, 2010, 07:58:30 PM
I could prolly supply bios for Mark I and IV.

You seem to have done a good job with giving Mark II and III personalities though. ^^

From your story on Mark I-tan, I've found out quite a bit about her backstory and personality. Good job! :) But it must have been tough for the earliest OS-tans, who if they were much like her, were prone to suffering existential crises. :(

I've been meaning to finish this for some time:

Reading through the backlog of stories in the SAGE fanfics, when I read the chapter "Dirty Water", the biggest tear-jerker in the series, I knew I just had to draw this!

Title: Aurora's new drawing thread
Post by: Bella on December 15, 2010, 02:49:58 PM
Ah yes, Dirty Water... for being named after such a fun song (that caused a hell of a lot of spontaneous dancing this summer), it sure is a downer. ;__;

Fortunately, the next story - IIRC - is full of lulz and WAITS-tan. ^^'

Whirlwind looks P-E-R-F-E-C-T here, could maybe use a few more bandages but then you'd risk obscuring her face. The hands are a bit funky but I can't really fault you since it's a tough pose you're drawing -- my main critique would be SAGE-tan's face. It's a difficult angle you've drawn it from, but the chin comes to too much of a point and the facial feature alignment isn't quite right... I'll just let this example I drew explain things.

http://i155.photobucket.com/albums/s320/BellasOS-tans/SAGE_whirlwind1973_example.jpg

Still a lovely image; I'm sure Stew'll be delighted to see it. ;v;
Title: Aurora's new drawing thread
Post by: Aurora Borealis on December 15, 2010, 03:13:27 PM
Thanks! I wasn't very confident about when drawing SAGE's face since it is a tough angle I've never drawn in before, I felt it was bound to look 'off', but thanks for the critique. If I end up drawing in that angle again, I'll be able to learn from this.

BTW, does it seem appropriate that SAGE here is wearing her finest uniform to such a somber event as another way everything that could go badly that day did? I've also wanted to draw Multics and SAGE at CTSS's deathbed too.

Or something happier, like SAGE, Whirlwind and GENIAC at the picnic! :)
Title: Aurora's new drawing thread
Post by: Bella on December 16, 2010, 08:23:21 PM
Good to hear, every drawing should be a learning experience. :)

I don't know if SAGE would've worn her fancy outfit that day; not so much out of respect or somberness, but sheer practicality (I don't imagine she would have worn it outside of formal settings, and Stewart seems to confirm this). ^^'

I sort of support a Multics+ SAGE at CTSS' deathbed drawing, if only for it having Multics + SAGE + CTSS. Though a picnic drawing would be fun. =v=

I thought she wouldn't wear it, and for those very reasons, but I couldn't resist drawing it- her uniform is awesome!

Between those two ideas which I hope to get to, I'm still deciding which to do first.

Now, for something happy! A Commodore-Amiga Family reunion! :D

I actually started this in Oct '09 but kept forgetting about it, but at last, the chibi Mac family lineup!

(note: Includes A/UX-tan and Darwin OS-tan, who are honorary Mac House members. A/UX is a certified Unix but identifies as an Apple/Mac-tan since they're the ones she grew up with. Darwin OS identifies as both an Apple-tan and a Unix-tan. If I had been willing to spend even more time on this, I could have also added in NeXTSTEP-tan, or go another step further and add in Apple I, II, ///, Lisa and GS/OS, but I feared it would collapse under its own ambition x__x)

Sweet Snow Leopard on a Bicycle! That's one heck of a drawing. @_________@

As a group, the Mac Classics are probably my favourites here.... most of the OSXen look good too (lulz at Cheetah holding a whip and Puma-chan as the maid), but something is srsly un-rightly about Leopard. I think it's the position of her head...

@stew: Thanks! Good luck with the challenge!

@Bella: You got one of them.

-Bugs: Darwin OS-tan likes to eat bugs, but accidentally dropped one of them, and Mac System 3-tan has a huge fear of bugs!

-Dog-like creature: Not a dog, but one of the OSX-kuns in kitten form! ^^;

Like the old "Welcome to Macintosh" symbol between System 3 and 2. http://rogueamoeba.com/utm/content/images/20061106delicious/welcome.png

Part of a major old Apple logo above System 1.
http://sandboxworld.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/08/old-apple-logo.jpg

The blues/greens/purples/oranges above OS 7, 8 and 9 strongly remind me of the boxart on those OS tan's distributions.
http://www.mith.umd.edu/larsen/archive/files/system75manual_2d8664004c.jpg

Also like the evolution of the menu bar over the course of the picture.

System 6 has a paper, because it's one of vintage collector's favorite OS's for writing. (and omg her outfit is awesome, she's so pretty /thwacks SE with customer service screw driver/ I NEED HER)

System 9 and default OSX have apple cider, which is a reference inside a reference.
Title: Re: Aurora's new drawing thread
Post by: Aurora Borealis on January 26, 2011, 10:01:57 PM
"Welcome to Macintosh" symbol: Yup, there's that, and that Systems 1-7 are the Mac OSes that run on Compact Macs!

Old Apple logo: Wow! Good find! I didn't entirely intend for the throwback to the first Apple logo, but drew an Apple tree in the Picasso-esque art style used in early Mac advertisements and packaging, with the roots of the Mac Family tree, biologically or culturally going back to System 1. If I get to drawing a chibi portraiture with the other Apple-tans (to keep this one a fairly manageable size), I'll include a similar throwback to the original logo behind Apple 1-tan.

Colored circles: No, I didn't consider that, since I had forgotten what the box arts looked like for the pre-8 Mac OSes, but good guess!

Menu bar evolution: Spot-on! :D

System 6: Right-o!

My condolences for your SE's hard drive dying. :(

Apple cider: Almost, but that's Rhapsody/OSX Server with apple cider! ^^;
Title: Re: Aurora's new drawing thread
Post by: Krizonar on January 26, 2011, 10:50:59 PM
Because Rhapsody is a server... and 'serves' cider.. /ba dum pssssh
and oh, I thought it was in Default OSX's hand, that's just me making a mistake Xd
Just in the Mac Manga, Mac OS 9 and default OSX get drunk on apple cider together (at least that's how I interpreted it, I can't read it, it's in japanese).

Old Apple logo; I knew it looked familiar to that too, but went with an 'either or'.

Colored Circles; hm, if that wasn't it then I'm probably just having a brain jam... I KNOW i've seen it somewhere. I'll have to think about it more, it's late and I've been kinda bothered by my SE lately, I loved it so much.

I'll get my SE working, she's too young to die and much to stubborn! Hour 13(?) or work, begins in 10 minutes!

for lulz; Mac OS 7 is holding a paper too because it's the first Mac OS that can, without modification, do complex, modern spreadsheets.

*hint hint*: The Mac OS 8+ 9 eras were very colorful!

I hope you can get your SE working again! :(

Didn't know that System 7 was the first Mac OS that can do modern spreadsheets, but I guess that works too! (incidentally, many of her predecessors are scatterbrained!) :)

A WIP, I'll post the final in the Free Cookies thread:

A group pic mainly of the pre-Macs, but also includes some Mac-tan cameos too, and a redesigned GS/OS-tan. Working on this also inspired me to resume a similar DEC-tan group pic I started back in July, but struggled with. I can use some techniques I learned making this one to help me with the other pic too.

They all look nice.... but something really special is going on with ///-tan. She looks so elegant and mature... *v*

Maybe it's the limb-length? The slightly-smaller-than-you-usually-draw head size? Whatever the case is, I'm not complaining. ^^

I do see a hitch with ][-tan though - I would suggest increasing the the width of her chest and/or bringing her right arm (HER right, our left) in a bit closer to her body; and make her hands smaller too.

Beta version of Apple Family pic, I also added a couple of unexpected cameos. :D

You weren't expecting GS/OS-tan to have a guitar with her? But she's a musician!
