I've just started watching it on IFC.  I consider a spin on the revenge drama.  Basically the plot revolves around this girl, Ai, who gives people a chance for revenge through the "Hell Correspondence" on the internet.  When someone contacts her, she gives them a doll with a red thread around the neck.  When they pull the string they are bound into the covenant, and the soul of their enemy will be ferried to hell (in some sort of poetic justice way).  The catch is the person who enters the covenant also bounds their soul to hell (whenever they die that is).  Anyway, a reporter and his daughter are investigating the incidents and trying to stop people who have used the hell correspondence.

I like it so far.

I'm thinking and thinking and thinking, but I don't know what you've seen.  More importantly, most of what I've seen is from television, so I'm not sure there's much I've that you haven't.  What kind of animu do you like?

Is it... MOE >:3 ?

Oooh, good thread, and good idea ( i recently found some space to keep anime... ^_^)...
Besides that anime sounds quite interesting... And for a complete hijack (poor toki <3) I am myself into deep philosofy-ish dark anime, like death note, or a bit lighter but still an epic storyline GITS...

Also Captain: Good sauce, do want! :D

It's interesting that you mention Death Note, because it was the first anime I thought about when I started watching Hell Girl.  Indeed, there's a good deal of similarity, but unlike Death Note, it seems to have a more definite message.  I mean, the ideas are framed in a different way than they are in Death Note.  I should stop right there to avoid spoiling any details.

I don't watch television animu very often. After the fact after a craze has died down if it still sounds interesting I may look into it. Like Paranoia Agent, which I didn't have any interest in until I found my veeery favoritest seiyuu voiced Maromi. And upon viewing it I actually really liked it. I like many different sorts on anime, but it takes alot to impress me since I started with the good old stuff like Ranma Nibun no Ichi, Slayers, 3x3 Eyes and Record of Lodoss War. I think Lucky Star is pretty cute but I like Azumanga Daioh better, and Excel Saga is fun and pointless but not quite as mind fckering as say... no I can't think of anything as strange but still light hearted. NieA_7 perhaps? I really enjoy all of Yoshitoshi AbE's work, especially Haibane Renmei, and Lain was really good too, I actually saw it a very~ long time ago.  My favorite "moe" anime was Ichigo Mashimaro, although Magical Mya Mya Taruto is actually a really cute idea. Rozen Maiden doesn't really appeal to me. I don't really like the animation style but I need to watch it since I'm apart of a Rozen Maiden cosplay group. Guess who I'm cosplaying as :P

Added after 1 minutes:

Oh, and I saw DeathNote before it was on television and I wasn't very impressed. Sort of interesting I guess but it really tried too hard, don't you think? EVA is a little over rated if you don't care to look very hard, but it was pretty good.

EVA's overrated, more lazy than deep.  I mean really, take a show that has a point and shut it down at the end, WTF?!  People write psychology papers about it.  *rolls eyes*

Anyway, I'd say I mostly agree with you Toki.  Hell Girl is the only animu on TV I've bothered to watch regularly since Gurren Lagann (and I haven't even seen all of that yet).  Nothing else on AS or SciFi even sparks my interest anymore, it all seems so done before.  I generally watch whatever anime is playing on IFC because I can know that it will at least be uncensored.  There's some stuff that my friend has tried to talk me into watching, but I just feel totally uninterested because it's all been so hyped.  Also, if I know of something that's playing that's old, with hand-drawn animation, chances are that no matter how awful the story is, I'll watch it.

I only saw a little of Gurren Lagan before it was aired, I still think it's pretty cool but I wish there weren't so many bad (and good I guess) cosplays of Tits McJailbait cuz I kinda wanna cosplay as her. Sorry I'm really in a cosplay mood but I'll try not to talk about it.

I kinda wanna see more stuff like Fate/Stay and Berserk. Hokuto no Ken was friggin sweet and so was Jojo's :D I am also watching Initial D second stage haha. But I need more!! When it comes to girly anime I like stuff like Card Captor Sakura and Kashi Mashi, but not so much stuff like Ouran Host Club although I did like Ouran but it's usually not my type.. I don't like girly fanservice bishounen stuff. Gross! But Ouran was cute and funny and had a decent plot.

I don't really like the girly stuff, but I also don't like the male-targeted (or at least you'd think it was) harem animus.  Stuff like that doesn't have an appeal to me other than gimmick - the story just seems so absurd, and not in the good FLCL kind of way.

Post by: Smokey on March 04, 2009, 03:14:37 PM

And i don't even have anime on TV here so i'm totally dependant of either the internet or the anime store 15 miles away...

Luckily, I've got neither stores nor tv stations around selling/airing anything at all, so I don't exactly have to choose anything but THE BEST, haha. -w-

Lucky Star, btw, is the most awesome Slice-of-life animu ever created. Except for the OVA.
THE OVA IS GOD TIER. >:3[/b]

Anyway. Aside from the obvious (from my last like what, 4 avatars or something, I think you know what I mean by now) I must say pretty much anything SHAFT is goodmahell level - especially Pani Poni Dash, Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei, Zoku (S2) included, and their current work, Maria+Holic (more liek Lesbian+Nosebleed+Parade+Holic, amirite? :V)
Also, Seto no Hanayome was really nice. NaGARsumi, hell year.
Gurren Lagann doesn't need to be mentioned. Kamina and Simon are simply the KINGS of GAR. No further comment needed.

Also, Hyakko (from last season) was LAWLzy. Great comedy, must see.
To Aru Majutsu no Index (from last season, still airing) is also damn good, JC Staff knows their stuff!

Of course, classics like Slayers and such are also nice stuff.

Humor is great and all because I love to laugh, but there's only so much wordplay, meta-references, sexual humor, and yes even moe I can stand - where's the slapstick and dark humor... what about that?  When I laugh, I want a genuine belly laugh - not the same forced giggles I give everyday.  I don't mean to rant, it's just I feel there's a bit lacking in "funny" animu.

QuoteOh, and I saw DeathNote before it was on television and I wasn't very impressed. Sort of interesting I guess but it really tried too hard, don't you think? EVA is a little over rated if you don't care to look very hard, but it was pretty good.

For me, the characters in Death Note just weren't likable enough.  I didn't really like L at all, but I never understood what it was people liked about Light Yagami either.  For some weird reason, I really liked Near and Mellow, but still the main draw of the series was the theme - the concept that power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely.  I love watching cat-and-mouse games too, so all in all, I really liked the series.

I need new anime.  Uhn.  Hey.  Picture me as a rapper saying that, like Master P.  "Everybody go uhhhhnnn.  Uhhhhn."

Distracted.  I really did just get back from drinking.

What's something similar to Nagasarete Airantou?  That was <3.

Uhn.  Black Lagoon was good.  A favorite.  El Cazador de la Bruja was good.  Everyone loves FMP!  Anything related to Shakugan no Shana or Zero no Tsukaima make me smile.  Uhn...

QuoteSpeed Groper? I've never seen it.... is it good?

XD... Speed Groper

Speed Grapher is about this photographer who gets this "demonic eye" (whatever he takes a picture of explodes) ability from kissing this jailbait.  Then the jailbait kisses other people who also get demonic powers, and the photographer has to use his power to kill the other powered folk and protect the jailbait.  I mean, that's the plot as I understand it >__<.

Yes, I had to make it sound as stupid as possible because I though the whole jailbait thing was pretty dumb.

Anyway - TT should cater to all your needs there too - since most of the stuff you're looking for there are Blu-Ray (YEEESSS) rips, they have dubs and subs included in the mux. That and none other. Seems pretty damn FANCEEEYH to me. The first animu was really good - until it started deteriorating too much from the mango - and even then, it kept itself good still.

This version's gonna stay by the mango for script. NOW I LIKE THE SOUND OF THIS YOU KNOW _W_

Yeah, that I heard, but isn't the manga still ongoing?  I'd hate for this to turn into one of those animus that just use completely made up bullshit to buy time while the manga-ka presses some more issues.  That was actually what I loved about the original series, despite it completely deviating from the original manga halfway through, at least it didn't bore me shitless with 50 episodes of filler.  Sure continuity became an issue as a result, but the story is not as bad as some people make it out to be.  It's certainly enjoyable if you're not some completely anal-retentive bastard.  So less than faithful story for no damn filler bullshit... equivalent exchange indeed.

I'm indeed going to be watching for this one, I believe BONES is doing the art again, which is a definite plus.  From what I've heard of the manga, there's some seriously blasphemous mindfuckage and I would really enjoy seeing that translated to badass fully animated form.  Given the overwhelming success and popularity of the franchise State-side, it wouldn't surprise me a bit to hear it was licensed right away.  Of course, I may not be necessarily waiting that long anyway (as long as the fansubs aren't total shit).

Well...we'll see who subs it when we get there. I'm hoping for Eclipse.

And with like 5 more years of mango to work on (or whatever it is) I believe 50 episodes (that's the length of this series, yeah) isn't going to cover even half of it, rly. So don't worry. -w-

Still, after all these years, trying to decipher the plot of Inuyasha. Nejin? Nejin... Why did you make Inuyasha?

And, uhn...  FMA?  Eclipse is doing this.  When I watched that first episode, I was in bliss. But I was also drunk. And... being drunk... does that? Uhn...

Deferring to the next person's post for a... maybe... subtitle my post?  Like Eclipse would do to anime?  It should be decipherable by generations to come.

I still like the original version of the FMA "beginning" more, but meh, that's prolly just cause it's more detailed there, no? Also moar blood&gore <3.

And why I made Inuyasha?

The point of Inuyasha:  MUST LEARN TETSUSAIGA'S ULTIMATE TECHNIQUE! (because you see, somehow the "ultimate" technique always changes)

If any nerd tries to say anything about "Shikon Jewel Shards", I will stab them in the eye (because the shards always play second fiddle to BFS).  Anyway, I'm pretty ashamed I know this much about that animu, but my friend has a lot to do with that...

Post by: Seamore on April 17, 2009, 01:47:21 AM
This is my opinion though.
Fate/Stay Night is decent anime. Good character, nice graphic. It's just the story. It follows saber arc, while sakura arc is sweet and rin arc is awesome (I'm trying to minimize the spoiler so...).
If you interested in playing visual novel game, GET THE GAME. It's story is much better. Warning though, it have some scene you don't want your wife, your kids, your sister and your mother (especially if your under age) see you playing it (it is rated as mature for nothing).
Final verdict, if you underage get the anime. If you in legitimate age and interested in visual novel, GET THE GAME AT ALL COST.

Ahem...
Final verdict, Good Animations, Good character, Okay story, Some nice action scene. It's a good anime.
But as I said before, it's good, but not as good as the game.

Well, I've read about the VN before, I'm guessing I wasn't all that compelled to try it.  The animu came as highly recommended from my best friend, but despite that I'm still highly skeptical.  I don't really understand what I'm in for, you know?  I'm in a mood where I'm very particular about what I want to see...

Apparently I was mistaken, F/SN hasn't even been translated yet.  If you intend on purchasing it, you could probably find it on Amazon Japan or even better, Type-Moon's website (http://www.typemoon.com/).  Still a fan-translation is in the works, but as of now, it is still incomplete.  I see there is also a game for the PS2, but who wants an eroge with all the good stuff missing?

CORRECTION:  Fan-translation completed (http://mirrormoon.org/projects/fate_stay_night).  It's a patch, so you still need a copy of the original Fate/stay Night, which is available as an import as I mentioned before.

DISCLAIMER:  One should assume that since I am speaking of an eroge, all material that I have linked to dealing with said eroge is NSFW, whether that is actually the case or not.

Post by: Seamore on April 22, 2009, 02:58:23 AM
Yes, the patch is completed and I already have it. It's just that dang importing the game. It REALLY EXPENSIVE here.
And for eroge, it's actually not NSFW, but practically NSF EVERYWHERE especially if any female family member around.

Well, rules may vary, ya know?  Some places people could care less that you're viewing NSFW material, and others may be absolutely nosy and intrusive making it virtually impossible to view such things.  In any case, if your household happens to be the latter, just assume that NSFW means NSFH as well...

On topic, anybody got an kick-ass actiony animu to recommend?  I've got some catching up to do on the new FMA, but I'd also like to know of anything else awesome I'm missing...

Well, not exactly sure they're kick-ass - not very so in my opinion, that's for sure - but Sengoku Basara (Warring Countries era Japan overkill action animu, you know the deal) and Souten Kouro (Cao Cao-themed ROTK animu, just as overkill, just a tad sloppier visuals) are both in the middle of airing. That alongside Phantom ~Requiem for the Phantom~, which is action/assassins/stealth/plot/SPECIAL OPS LOL you know the deal, albeit slightly more amusing than the other two at a first glance.
