Title: OS-tan Flashbackstory Chronicles
Post by: Aurora Borealis on June 11, 2008, 02:33:48 PM
Greetings, earthlings-- err... viewers. I decided to move these comics into a new thread to reduce clutter in my main art thread which is something I should have actually done in the first place because ZS has its own thread.

This is the OS-tan Flashbackstory Chronicles series, an assortment of OS-tan comics that detail certain OS-tan's backstories and are obviously flashbacks (hence the title). These stories range from serious, sappy to moderately silly, a big departure from the highly silly zerOSanity. Previous pages can be seen here: http://ostan-collections.net/imeeji/thumbnails.php?album=205

--CURRENTLY IN PROGRESS--

01: "From raggedy servitude to glamorous independence- Macintosh System 1-tan!" (17 out of an estimated 22 pages done)

A 'Cinderella'-like story about Mac System 1-tan's early life from 1983 until her release to the public on Jan 24 1984. After Lisa-tan ended up doing poorly with the public, she was very frustrated. And combined with her extremely spoiled attitude and years worth of bottled up sadness and grief, she took it all out on System 1-tan by forcing her to be the servant and lashing out when System 1-tan tries to speak up against her. But one fateful day, System 1-tan was given a second chance...

--PLANNED--

02: "All messed up and nowhere to go?"

The story of how Altair 8800-tan joins the Binteeji Renmei, but also includes past events involving other OS-tans that leads to Altair-tan's discovery (and confirmation of still being alive) by the Vintage-tans.

Takes place close to present day, Altair-tan finally joins after years of putting it off though. She knew that she caused her own demise from the competition; knows that she is frail and accident-prone, and that one of the few friends she ever had [Apple I-tan] is long dead. Still, she remained a wanderer by choice for years, not wanting to give up... until one day she gets chased and attacked by a group of bootleg OS-tans. When fleeing, she realizes that going to that Binteeji Renmei place that tried to recruit her before may be a life-saving decision. But that is not all...

03: (no title yet)

This story takes place at the Mac House, begins around present time and is quite silly, with events and such that would not be out of place in either zerOSanity or Mac Party Redux. But these events lead to a flashback to Feb. 1989 (which takes a turn for the serious, violent and sappy!) with the fight between Macintosh System 6-tan and ANTI-tan, as well as before events and the aftermath of the showdown.

04: (no title yet either)
95 OSR 2.1-tan writes of her memoirs: childhood memories of MS BOB-tan and her departure, OSR 2.1-tan's own departure and failures, OSR 2.5-tan's departure also from failure, life as a wanderer, her reunion with OSR 2.5-tan who was at the time living in misery and how she helped restore OSR 2.5-tan confidence and allowed her to turn her life around.

For my next order of business, I shall post up page 1-10!

...And things take a huge turn for the worse again! Lisa-tan completely ruins System 1-tan's hopes of going to the party! For now, of course because it is obvious what happens later but that doesn't make it any less sad!

OMG...o___O

You're right, it has taken a nosedive for the worse! Poor System 1-chan! Seeing her crying is heartbreaking : ..(

And, oooooh, SNAP! Calling Lisa-san a....beeee-otch....looks like the occasional salty language in my comic has had a bad influence XD

I also liked reading the plans for your other comics.

...for the better! Apple ][-tan reappears and gives System 1-tan her invitation to go to the party because it means a lot more to System 1-tan than her!

So that's ][-tan appearing as System 1-chan's fairy godsister? I bet she's going to give her a beautiful dress to wear!

Yup! That's Apple ][-tan in a fairy costume (complete with wand! Another parallel to the Cinderella story) coming in to deliver good news to System 1-tan! And yes she will give her a beautiful dress to wear on the next page!

Finally I can get to this!  YOSH!!  ^0^

QuoteThis is the OS-tan Flashbackstory Chronicles series, an assortment of OS-tan comics that detail certain OS-tan's backstories and are obviously flashbacks (hence the title). These stories range from serious, sappy to moderately silly, a big departure from the highly silly zerOSanity. Previous pages can be seen here:

I'm so happy you're committed to this particular comic series.  ^__^
I especially love the fact that you can show the girls in [what to us look like] strange and unusual historical settings, as demonstrated by the fact that we've never seen Lisa-chan as bossy until this comic came.  ^v^

QuoteA 'Cinderella'-like story about Mac System 1-tan's early life from 1983 until her release to the public on Jan 24 1984. Fufufu... I wonder how this will end?  With a glass slipper,... or a REALLY large hammer?  ^v^

QuoteThe story of how Altair 8800-tan joins the Binteeji Renmei. Takes place close to present day, Altair-tan finally joins after years of putting it off though. When fleeing, she realizes that going to that Binteeji Renmei place that tried to recruit her before may be a life-saving decision. But that is not all...

Fufufu... this sounds familiar.  ^^
Funny how she feels like the Binteji Renmei is somehow akin to "giving" up to a life of retirement.   Granted it is a quieter life, the goal of the organization is to have older OS-tans band together in order to come out stronger and meet the challenges of the 21st century.  Sadly, a lot of Wanderers do believe the stereotype, so despite progress to the contrary the Vintage-tans still don't have the level of membership they need to really meet their goals.

Hence, the chronic money shortages.  -___-;

Awww... I still can't conceive of the notion that violence and Aurora can mix, but I'm worried I'm going to be surprised.  ;__;
Still, it's a tale that must be told and by all means I look forward.  ^^

Quote...And things take a huge turn for the worse again! Lisa-tan completely ruins System 1-tan's hopes of going to the party! For now, of course because it is obvious what happens later but that doesn't make it any less sad!

PANEL 1:  HOE?!!!!!!  @o@
Oh, that was deliciously evil of Lisa-chan. ^^;
Love the use of "shall" that's a word that Lisa-chan actually uses a lot of.

PANEL 2:  And how deliciously cute it is to see System 1-chan hold back tears of frustraton in this pic.  ^v^;

PANEL 3,4,5:  Naturally, we have the mandatory servitude pics.  I assume the last one is the actual toilet-scrubbing thing.  ^>^

PANEL 6:  Between this and Panel 2, these definitely go for best crying moments.  ^^
Still hard for me to get used to seeing System 1-chan doing the Oldspeak thing, so obviously seeing her drop the b-word is downright culture shock.  ^^;
I'm sure nowadays she substitutes that with "Unsmart Moneyplenty Doggirl"  ^v^

PANEL 7:  BWAHAHHAA!!!!!!!!  ^V^
Beaten-up Chibi Lisa-chan is definitely up for nomination for best supporting microchibi.  That is just too cute!  ^.^

Also neat seeing ][-chan issuing uncharacteristic praise over sister rivalry.  ^v^;

QuoteBwahahahaha! I like to throw in some salty language from time to time! F@#$ yeah!!

Oh dear me, goodness gracious, and all that jazz!  @o@
Aurora-hime cusses!  I thought this would not happen until pigs flew.  @__@

*magically sprouts wings and floats away*

This onslaught of profanity is just too much for my piggy heart.  I feel my ears bleed already.  ^0^

*C-chan passes out, but still manages to float away further*

Quote...for the better! Apple ][-tan reappears and gives System 1-tan her invitation to go to the party because it means a lot more to System 1-tan than her!

*C-chan drops back to earth*

Ahhh,... now this is a lot more like it.  ^.^

PANEL 3,4:  Oh how very sweet and characteristic of ][-chan!  Cosplaying as a fairy godmother figure in order to give her little sister what she wants.  ^___^

But wait,... why is System 1-chan still hunched over that dirty toilet?  ^v^;

PANEL 5,6,7:  Should note that ][-chan looks amazingly cute in that fairy clothing -- kind of foreshadowing Newton-chan there.  ^^

PANEL 8:  I'm tellin' you,.. sweet as molasses.  ^.^

Besides,... I doubt she'd have the time to waste in a party anyway -- there's always work to be had, especially back then when the Commodore Family was staking claims to so much territory.  ^__^

PANEL 9:  Oooh,... is that really going to be a dress and glass slippers?  ^.^

Or maybe something,... more,.... revolutionary?  ^v^

I like that too- it shows the characters in a very different way from their present selves! Oh, how many of them have changed greatly, for better or worse!

Quote
Fufufu... I wonder how this will end?  With a glass slipper,... or a REALLY large hammer?  ^v^

A large hammer to Lisa-tan's face? That's probably something System 1-tan was also thinking but to both of you I must say... wishful thinking! *chuckle*

But the comic does need moar hammertime!

Stop, hammertime! Can't touch this! Dun dun dun dun dun... can't touch this!

A lot of those wanderers sure are stubborn! (Of course Altair-tan was really stubborn, not wanting to retire despite all the odds she was against) But if it weren't for their stubbornness, the Binteeji Renmei would be able to meet its goals and not have chronic money problems!

Apple ][-tan gives System 1-tan the dress she has been working on!

In the last panel, she says "Wow... Is this really me?" because she is not used to dressing like that at all. To dress so elegantly is a far cry from her raggedy servant gear! Of course, she's got a nice and cute outfit she wears when not on servant duty but it fails in comparison to her gala dress! :D

Oooh, a simple but nice page here! ][-tan and System 1-chan are both looking great here, I especially like starstruck 1-chan in panel 3, and 1-chan in her dress in panel 4. She looks really great all dressed up!

QuoteFufufu... this sounds familiar. ^^

Oh, I see...so, even as a group that's mostly retired, that doesn't mean there isn't work to be done...

I'm guessing it was their becoming vintage-tans that drew them together; as they didn't "have" to be rivals anymore.

AHHH!!  There's another page here too?!!!  Curse my absence!!!  >v<

*starts typing furiously*

Added after 45 minutes:

QuoteA large hammer to Lisa-tan's face? That's probably something System 1-tan was also thinking but to both of you I must say... wishful thinking! *chuckle*

Awwww... guess we'll have to find out if glass slippers make a better melee weapon. ^^;

QuoteStop, hammertime! Can't touch this! Dun dun dun dun dun... can't touch this!

This would be a good spot to drop a "That's like sooooooooooo 1990's."  ^^;

QuoteBut if it weren't for their stubbornness, the Binteeji Renmei would be able to meet its goals and not have chronic money problems!

Well you have to figure that many of them are neither able to or can afford to participate in the Internet, so news travels slowly and they're essentially dependent on gossip, word-of-mouth, old wives' tales, superstitions, and just lots of presumptions.  Those that are very old BELIEVE they're very old and act accordingly -- they would simply scoff at any effort to believe otherwise, thinking of it as some kind of new-age "poppycosh" (you know, like how silly those "60 is the new 30" catch phrases can sound like?).

The truth of the matter is that the Binteji Renmei is a far more pragmatic institution, where everyone works and EARNS their right to respectable participants in modern society.  Since this DOES involve quite a lot of work, many Wanderers might find it easier to simply revel in their own self-pity and let others take care of them until their end of life.

In that respect, the Vintage-tans have it even tougher, since they also have to fight against the tide of hopelessness and apathy that has overtaken many of their former friends and colleagues.  When outnumbered like that, it's not uncommon for a Vintage-tan or two to,... every once in a while,... question whether it's.... time to give up.  -___-

Quote*ahem* But in one of the next pages, it will show System 1-tan picking up a random book (the Newspeak-to-Oldspeak dictionary and grammar guide) and reading it, and right away taking a liking to Newspeak and deciding to learn it for the first time! '

Fufufu... it definitely would help that Newspeak would undoubtedly freak out Lisa-chan, who might think her little sister has lost her marbles and thus not strike her [for fear of being contagious... bwahahaha!].  ^v^

QuoteI was wondering what the equivalent of "stupid b****" would be!

Actually, I just checked with the new Newspeak dictionary edition by System 2-tan,... turns out "Moneyplenty" is now "Moneyful" -- apparently to save on breath.  ^.^'

QuoteI agree. I wanted to keep ][-chan in that fairy costume for the rest of the comic but she soon has to change back to her standard outfit.

Better do so before she starts harvesting the Granny Smiths,.. those can be messy.  ^^;

QuoteAw yeah... And that was back when PET-chan, ][-chan and Atari DOS-tan were bitter rivals!
...
How did they all become friends? And such good friends?

Well that's the thing,... during those olden days, I don't think any of them would've been bitter rivals.  Sure they would've fought, but their engagements would harken back to the days when generals would sit down over tea, swap stories and admire eachother's tactics before a battle, when ships would take turns firing into eachother's broadside, and when the primary objective was to CAPTURE the opposing forces troops, which could then be ransomed for money or land, or simply converted.

So they were very prim and proper rivals, and thus now can be the best of friends since they've always had a healthy respect for eachother.  ^^

Ironnically, TRS-DOS-chan was the least bellicose of them all at the time, but has not been able to maintain that niceness over the years.  ^^;

QuoteYeah, it is going to be a dress and slippers. Although now that you mentioned it, I should have gone for something crazy! Something revolutionary!

Like a hammer under the dress!  ^v^

QuoteApple ][-tan gives System 1-tan the dress she has been working on!

Of course, she's got a nice and cute outfit she wears when not on servant duty but it fails in comparison to her gala dress!

WOW!  Diznee's Cinderella, eat your heart out. ^___^

As usual, Aurora-hime delivers a DY-NA-MITE performance in the form of charmingly-sweet characters, dazzling B&W special effects, and of course nice dresses adorned with a healthy serving of geekery.  Case in point, the Mac Face dress.  ^v^

Only thing is that the shoes still look kinda normal (=not glass_.  '__'

Do you have something in store?  `v'

QuoteOh, I see...so, even as a group that's mostly retired, that doesn't mean there isn't work to be done...

Well more like as a group, they finally have something to do PERIOD.  So yes, it's non-stop work of various degrees, from making flour for cake, to helping C64-tan rewire C-One,... but at least it keeps the their mind healthy, active and, best of all, growing.

I've always opined that an inactive brain is like a captive animal in a cage -- without anything new to stimulate itself, it just stagnates, whithers away, loses all hope, and just waits around for an early death.  That's way people with passionate hobbies tend to do better physically and emotionally as they age -- or so I've heard.  ^^

QuoteHey! Maybe System 1-chan and SAM-chan could do a Hammertime duet together! Now that'd be great :P

Hey now, stop with the Uber Cuteness!  I already had WAY too much sugar for one week.  @v@;

Since they didn't have to be rivals anymore since their days as competitors are long gone, still trying to compete would kind of a waste of time. But don't tell that to Coleco Adam-tan who still has a rivalry with Apple II-tan!

Whoa... Those Vintage-tans are WAY behind the times! Well, except for C64-tan!

Speaking of C64-tan, her friend Quantum Link-tan would be a great help to the Binteeji Renmei because she knows the latest news. However the downside is, Quantum Link-tan has an island resort to maintain. Maybe she has a lot of loyal patrons who can effectively run the place while she is absent, so she could visit a lot more often! ;012

Quote
The truth of the matter is that the Binteji Renmei is a far more pragmatic institution, where everyone works and EARNS their right to respectable participants in modern society.  Since this DOES involve quite a lot of work, many Wanderers might find it easier to simply revel in their own self-pity and let others take care of them until their end of life.
That's so sad (and slightly infuriating) :(

Quote
In that respect, the Vintage-tans have it even tougher, since they also have to fight against the tide of hopelessness and apathy that has overtaken many of their former friends and colleagues.  When outnumbered like that, it's not uncommon for a Vintage-tan or two to,... every once in a while,... question whether it's.... time to give up.  -___-
Give up, as in stop working and go back to being a wanderer because it is easier? :(

The Vintage-tans are against so many odds! Financial, technical, hopelessness and apathy from their former friends and even questioning whether it's time for them to give up!

Quote
Fufufu... it definitely would help that Newspeak would undoubtedly freak out Lisa-chan, who might think her little sister has lost her marbles and thus not strike her [for fear of being contagious... bwahahaha!].  ^v^
Hahahaha! That could make a good ZS page!

Quote
Actually, I just checked with the new Newspeak dictionary edition by System 2-tan,... turns out "Moneyplenty" is now "Moneyful" -- apparently to save on breath.  ^.^'
"Unsmartful moneyful doggirl!" ;012

Quote
Well that's the thing,... during those olden days, I don't think any of them would've been bitter rivals.  Sure they would've fought, but their engagements would harken back to the days when generals would sit down over tea, swap stories and admire eachother's tactics before a battle, when ships would take turns firing into eachother's broadside, and when the primary objective was to CAPTURE the opposing forces troops, which could then be ransomed for money or land, or simply converted.

So they were very prim and proper rivals, and thus now can be the best of friends since they've always had a healthy respect for eachother.  ^^
Perfectly said! They were rivals back in the good ol' days when rivalries and conflicts were civil and the rivals had respect for each other... Unlike the brutality and scorched-earth tactics of the OS Wars!

Quote
Ironnically, TRS-DOS-chan was the least bellicose of them all at the time, but has not been able to maintain that niceness over the years.  ^^;
What happened to her? o_o

As usual, Aurora-hime delivers a DY-NA-MITE performance in the form of charmingly-sweet characters, dazzling B&W special effects, and of course nice dresses adorned with a healthy serving of geekery.  Case in point, the Mac Face dress.  ^v^
Thank you! Truth be told, the dress isn't new, it's actually from the abandoned Apple ][ 30th anniversary picture:

QuoteWell more like as a group, they finally have something to do PERIOD.  So yes, it's non-stop work of various degrees, from making flour for cake, to helping C64-tan rewire C-One,... but at least it keeps the their mind healthy, active and, best of all, growing.
Don't forgot the chore of grooming EXEC-sama's hair! (I pity whoever has to do that!)

Title: OS-tan Flashbackstory Chronicles
Post by: C-Chan on August 01, 2008, 04:39:31 PM
Ah!  This girl just keeps churning out cute stuff like a.... butter churner on diesel engine.  ^.^

I'll be back later, but I am happy to report that I've begun sketching the next panel in the Zerosanity XMAS special.  I'm hoping to finally post stuff up this weekend.  ^___^

Stand by for more replies....  ^^

Added after 5 hours 39 minutes:

QuoteSince they didn't have to be rivals anymore since their days as competitors are long gone, still trying to compete would kind of a waste of time. But don't tell that to Coleco Adam-tan who still has a rivalry with Apple II-tan!

Fufu... might also add that some of the girls do still compete for fun,... you know, with board games and stuff.  Checkers, Chess, Tic-Tac-Toe, Go, Othello, Shogi, Poker, Snakes and Ladders, Dominoes, Jenga, Scrabble, Bingo, Monopoly, Pong, Asteroids, Pacman, Joust, Frogger, Dig Dug.... you know, good ol' fashioned family fun.  ^.^

Not particularly exciting for young OS-tans, but the old gals take their old games quite seriously.  ^^;

Case in point, Adam-chan vs. ][-chan -- they probably hold a match in SOMETHING at least once a day, or at least whenever Adam-chan's around.  -v-

QuoteThose would make a good weapon!

However... there is not going to be anymore violence in this story. Sorry! But there will be a lot in the third one though!

Well if it was up to me, I wouldn't have it in the third one either.  ^^'

QuoteWhoa... Those Vintage-tans are WAY behind the times! Well, except for C64-tan!

Well every once in a while she'll accidentally drop some hint that she's OLD.  She hates it when it happens.  ^^

QuoteSpeaking of C64-tan, her friend Quantum Link-tan would be a great help to the Binteeji Renmei because she knows the latest news. However the downside is, Quantum Link-tan has an island resort to maintain. Maybe she has a lot of loyal patrons who can effectively run the place while she is absent, so she could visit a lot more often!

The one benefit to living amongst friends, is that those friends know friends who know friends.....  ^___^
That any one of them (such as C64-tan -> Quantum Link-tan, or Amiga-san -> UNIX-sama, or AtariDOS-chan -> 95 OSR 2.5-tan, or PCDOS-chan -> OS/2-sama) can call in a favor or two when the time arises, is one of the defining reasons why the organizatiin hasn't collapsed into a pile of Fail.

One can never underestimate the power of connections -- too many Wanderers fall under the assumption that the path to prosperity can only be reached alone.  ^__~

QuoteGive up, as in stop working and go back to being a wanderer because it is easier?

The Vintage-tans are against so many odds! Financial, technical, hopelessness and apathy from their former friends and even questioning whether it's time for them to give up!

Well,... now that I'm all about philosophical quotes today, here's another:

"What doesn't kill you, only makes you stronger."

Or my new favorite Shogi-inspired quote (from 'Shion no Ou'):

"Those who lose get to grow stronger."

Besides, this might have been a big problem in the early days (or with newcomers) only.  Once they have enough to inspire them with -- such as EXEC-sama's and GENIAC-chan's success story, or all the wealth of information discovered helping ZX-chan with her genealogy project -- few would dare give up the opportunity to enrich their lives further (not for all the tea in China!).

To put it a cornier way, they would become "Hooked on Hope".  ^^

QuoteWhat happened to her?

As you may remember, TRSDOS-chan was a very loyal and devoted disciple of the Cult of RadioShack.
Unfortunately, over the years she became a little,... TOO devoted.

And with the loss of her product line, the gradual fall from grace of her company, and her tireless efforts to disguise all those inconvenient facts,... well,.....

...

...Let's just say she became a little,... pathological.  @@;

In fact she's already been legally excommunicated from the Cult 15 years ago, after she scared one too many young employees with her ferverous rampage about seemingly silly things (like not leveling out their name tags).  Unfortunately, she cannot comprehend that notion in her mind, and not only still practices her religion, but also regularly "inspects" random Radio Shacks every once in a while, usually resulting in her being tossed out by some mall security.

Living in the presence of other OS-tans just as crazy as she is (OS/2-sama and QNX-chan) has helped mellow her out a little in recent years.  But don't be fooled, as she can ignite with any improperly-spoken comment.

Plus she revels with joy at the fact that she knows very little about much of anything new (or even old), and likes to keep it that way.  OS/2-sama and gang have to literally strap her to a chair and pry her eyelids open in order to make her watch a webpage.

QuoteThank you! Truth be told, the dress isn't new, it's actually from the abandoned Apple ][ 30th anniversary picture:

GAAAAAAH!!!  I must've OD'ed on Stupid Pills that morning!!!  I'm SO SORRY!  You're right, it is!!  ^0^

*C-chan wallows in shame*

QuoteUnfortuneatly, no. I completely forgot  (and I wanted to keep things simple)

Oh well, that's fine.  ^___^
After all, System 1-chan is a pretty small girl.  It might be difficult finding glass slippers in her size, since no manufacturer or shoe maker [willing to avoid a veritable tidal wave of lawsuits] would dare make glass shoes for little kids.  ^______________^;

QuoteDon't forgot the chore of grooming EXEC-sama's hair! (I pity whoever has to do that!)

You can imagine the sighs of relief exhaled throughout the land once EXEC-sama and GENIAC-chan became good friends.  ^o^;

Wow!  Sugoiness^13!!!  ^v^
I hadn't seen a panel for this story in a while, so it was quite the surprise to see one posted up on the front page.  ^____^

This reminds me of what we were talking about roughly a month ago -- that System 1-chan would literally learn Newspeak right before the party.  Course, it begs the question how a Newspeak dictionary wound up in the old Apple Mansion (almost said "Mac House", but it wouldn't have existed then, wouldn't it?  ^__~), but its a cute bit of randomness.  ^.^

My particular favorite panels are 2 and 3, where we get the cutest shots of a consternated ][-chan on the one hand, and an anxious System 1-chan in the other.  ^_____^

The story continues to be riveting, so by all means please continue.  I'm DYING to see the look on Lisa-chan's face when she sees (and hears) the new System 1-chan.  ^v^

Adam-tan and ][-tan have a crazy rivalry almost akin to that between 95 OSR 2.5-tan and 98-tan, or the rivalry between A/UX-tan and Macintosh System 6-tan! (although the latter mentioned is a friendly rivalry, it is still crazy!)

They've got connections, one of the main reasons the Binteeji Renmei has succeeded! The other one is that the Vintage-tans are very resourceful and know how to pool their resources and talent together effectively!

A few other notable connections I know are ][-tan -> The Mac-tans and A/UX-tan! or Atari TOS-tan -> Barbie Linux-tan!

I also forgot to mention that GEOS-tan would also be friends with Quantum Link-tan! (GEOS is a GUI OS for the Commodore 64 and could use Quantum Link and even AOL! GEOS was also later ported to the Apple ][ )

Well, "1984" was published in 1949 so a Newspeak-to-Oldspeak dictionary could have been around as far back as that year.

Fufu.... I can probably imagine, since A/UX-tan is the only Apple[-like] girl with the physical strength to match System 6-tan in rought-and-tumble.  ^^;

Although.......... I guess Cheetah-sama could too.  ^^

QuoteA few other notable connections I know are ][-tan -> The Mac-tans and A/UX-tan! or Atari TOS-tan -> Barbie Linux-tan!

Note that ][-chan is one to call in TOO many favors (she's still a considerate big sister at heart), so it's very likely she hardlyt takes advantage of that.  But certainly if it was necessary, for sure.  ^.^

Certainly Barbie Linux-hime is indispensible when it comes to modern fashion (althogh she'd have to watch how she phrases it... ), but I guess there can't be much in the way of actual clothes swapping.  ^^;

QuoteI also forgot to mention that GEOS-tan would also be friends with Quantum Link-tan! (GEOS is a GUI OS for the Commodore 64 and could use Quantum Link and even AOL! GEOS was also later ported to the Apple ][ )

Funny how I envisioned GEOS-tan as being the tit-for-tat equivalent to Commodore as GS/OS-tan is to Apple.  Perhaps GEOS-tan is also something of a servant to PET-chan and 64-chan (or perhaps more appropriately, a Petty Officer).

Quote
Connections are important. I know this first hand because there were some things I failed at by myself but succeeded with the help of others. And I used to think that the only way for me to succeed was by myself since I am overall an independent person in real life.

Well yeah, I could tell from your PM's you're pretty independent.  ^^;
But I suppose I could say I learned the same thing too, albeit the hard way.

Now if only that philosophy could be translated into team artwork a little more often.  -.-

QuoteThat's right! I once thought that winning was the only way to get stronger and that it was weak to lose, but losing is important because from losing, a person learns from their mistakes, how to improve themselves and be stronger!

Correct.  As another old phrase goes:

"The only way to stop a dog from chasing cars is to let him catch one."  ^^'

Unless there's something to make you realize you're making a mistake, you'll just keep committing it.  ^.^'

The over-emphasis on winning is of course part of the competitive mindset we're often schooled in, and while of course it's important to reward winning, it's a disservice to admonish losing as is often the case.  I would venture that this particular obsession to win is as much fueled by fear and a bipolar view of the world as much as anything else -- when tossed into a failing situtation, people with that mindset are more likely to break down emotionally.

Conversely, though, people who simply switch off and refuse to even try won't learn anything either -- in embracing loss as their only goal in life, they grow comfortable wallowing in a pool of their own shame and loathe the idea of bettering themselves.

"Winners win and Losers lose, but only the Strong will make the most of Victory and Defeat."

Yeah sorry, I had to make my own quote there.  ^^'

How about a similar one from Shion no Ou...?

"Both attack and retreat can be an offensive."

Incidentally, I just finished that show, and all I can say....

AWEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEESOMEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!! ^V^
One of my favorites now, for sure....

GAWD, I can't wait till my Shougi board arrives in the mail!  ^____^

QuoteThe whole Binteeji Renmei is giant fountain of hope and inspiration!

Well okay, let's not hype it too much. ^^;

Newcomers expecting to find it as some Zen-like temple of enlightenment will be put off the minute they see half the girls engaged in another coin and bottlecap tossing war.  ^^;

QuoteHoly craaaaaaap! There is devoted, and there is downright insane. TRS DOS-tan falls into the latter but I like her because she is so freaking crazy (and cute)!

Well she's cute, I'll tell ya that.  ^___^

The only reason she's not completely banned from performing crazy rants in Radio Shack stores now is because she looks so damn cute to the younger generations.  Apparently its amusing for them to see a pouty little girl, with puritan clothing, fiery eyes, a [woefully outdated] copy of the Holy Employee Manual that's half as big as she is, and a knack for random religious ravings that could put Carrie's mother to shame.  ^^;

Quote
That's unusual, being around OS/2-tan so much would normally make someone crazier! QNX-tan may be crazy (and a mad scientist!) but she is also very cheerful, friendly, and nonchalant! (and even trusted as a medic, car mechanic and even nuclear power plant supervisor!)

Just comes to show you that TRSDOS-chan was formally on the OPPOSITE end of the craziness spectrum.  ^^;
I guess OS/2-sama's lesser degree of insanity helped TRSDOS-chan achieve a state of equilibrium for her madness.

And yeah, either way you sugar coat it, QNX-sama is nuts.  ^__________^
One of her favorite pastimes, I'm sure, would be to tease TRSDOS-chan with all sorts of funky new-fangled gadgets.  The reaction of the bigoted, technophobic TRSDOS-chan when she wakes up to find herself strapped to a giant mecha would probably be priceless (to the point where even OS/2-sama wouldn't mind the expensive property damage that would result).  ^v^;

Quote...Although I like TRS DOS-tan very much, I would NOT like to meet her in real life at all, being that stubborn!

Wish I could say the same.  Problem is, she's based on an uncomfortably LARGE number of people I've had the displeasure of knowing.  -.-;

QuoteWaaaah. I have such a hard time focusing on multiple things, am not very good at multitasking and I am extremely scatterbrained!

SISTER!!!!!!!  ^V^

*gives Aurora-hime a hug of solidarity*

QuoteWell, "1984" was published in 1949 so a Newspeak-to-Oldspeak dictionary could have been around as far back as that year.

Well true, 1984 DOES seem like the kind of book ][-chan would read.  That, and the Jungle.

Incidentally, the uncensored version of The Jungle is incredible; if you have not read the book before at all, I much recommend this version over the commercial one:

http://www.amazon.com/Jungle-Uncensored-Original-Upton-Sinclair/dp/1884365302/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1217824022&sr=8-1

QuoteSay, doesn't that dictionary look familiar? Like the one that Ahiru-chan carries around? That is not a coincedence! In fact, she later gave it to Ahiru-chan!

Wow!!  Talk about the apprentice surpassing the master.  ^.^

Ahiru-chan likely poured over it at a very young age (just so she can actually UNDERSTAND what the heck her Onee-chan is talking about), and in doing so became an absolute expert at it.  To the point she's working on her own revisions to the language, as suggested but never completed in the novel.  ^___^

Certainly Barbie Linux-hime is indispensible when it comes to modern fashion (althogh she'd have to watch how she phrases it... ), but I guess there can't be much in the way of actual clothes swapping.  ^^;
Correct- she needs to be careful how she phrases 'modern fashion' and 'old fashions' because saying it the wrong way could make TOS-tan feel old! (and no one wants that!) Barbie Linux-tan is very nice but a little uhh... blunt at times!

Like OSR 2.5-tan, Barbie Linux-tan has an assortment of jobs but mainly as a fashion designer and dress maker. While she needs all the money she can get, being a wanderer and what not, she wouldn't mind giving away a few of her dresses (especially to the Vintage-tans who are often tight on money and need donations!)

There is a rendition of GEOS-tan in the Vintage gallery:

(http://ostan-collections.net/imeeji/albums/userpics/11522/normal_1180143206771.jpg)

Nicely drawn, but lacks cuteness. When I'll draw a new rendition, I will keep the blue hair, color scheme and the helmet and have her dressed in an officer uniform.

I agree- And in modern society, it is the winners that get the fame and stardom. And in the distant past: it was the winners that get the territory,  the best mates, the first dibs on available food and most importantly... it was the winners that survive. I wonder if all the stuff of the distant past is still rooted into peoples' subconscious as well.

That's just as bad too. Reminds me how it has became increasingly common for all participants in school sporting events receive awards even if they sucked, to avoid hurting anyone's feelings ;030

The hard work and training that all participants (whether they won or lost) had to go through should be acknowledged but giving everyone awards is taking it too far! I mean, hey! In elementary school, I participated in two track and field events (I was required to) and I totally sucked, did not get any awards and it did not hurt my feelings at all!

As the people on Fark sarcastically say, children these days are a bunch of "precious snowflakes" T__T

"Winners win and Losers lose, but only the Strong will make the most of Victory and Defeat."

Yeah sorry, I had to make my own quote there.  ^^'
Brilliant quote! ;019 The strong really do make the most of both outcomes- enjoy the victories and learn from their defeats!

Inversely, the weak can win or lose just as well, but they don't make anything out of their victories or defeat and they end up expecting another victory to be handed to them and completely despair and want to give up when they lose.

Quote
How about a similar one from Shion no Ou...?

"Both attack and retreat can be an offensive."
Hmm... How a retreat can be an offensive was a little baffling to me at first but it is akin to the phrase "the best offense is a good defense" so a defensive maneuver such as a retreat can work as an offensive!

Quote
Incidentally, I just finished that show, and all I can say....

AWEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEESOMEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!! ^V^
One of my favorites now, for sure....

GAWD, I can't wait till my Shougi board arrives in the mail!  ^____^
I wonder, if "Shion no Ou" becomes highly popular, that it could greatly boost Shougi's popularity like how "Hikaru no Go" did to Go!

Quote
Well okay, let's not hype it too much. ^^;

Newcomers expecting to find it as some Zen-like temple of enlightenment will be put off the minute they see half the girls engaged in another coin and bottlecap tossing war.  ^^;
Eheheheh... It will take a while for members to see the hope and inspiration! Not to mention they have to work for it, but the work is well worth it!

Quote
Well she's cute, I'll tell ya that.  ^___^

The only reason she's not completely banned from performing crazy rants in Radio Shack stores now is because she looks so damn cute to the younger generations.  Apparently its amusing for them to see a pouty little girl, with puritan clothing, fiery eyes, a [woefully outdated] copy of the Holy Employee Manual that's half as big as she is, and a knack for random religious ravings that could put Carrie's mother to shame.  ^^;
Hahahahaha! I, like many other people, would pay to see that! (which would also be good for the Radio Shack stores getting more customers and revenue and good for TRS DOS-tan being able to get her messages across, even if most of the onlookers are more focused on how cute she is and how funny she seems)

Quote
Just comes to show you that TRSDOS-chan was formally on the OPPOSITE end of the craziness spectrum.  ^^;
I guess OS/2-sama's lesser degree of insanity helped TRSDOS-chan achieve a state of equilibrium for her madness.
uhh... eComstation-tan isn't insane, right? I don't think RISC OS-tan is insane either except for the fact that she is insanely obsessive compulsive and perfectionistic.

Visi On-tan certainly has some degree of insanity and paranoia but loves to join in on the rest of the A$C's antics because being with them has been by far the most fun she has had in years or even decades!

Quote
And yeah, either way you sugar coat it, QNX-sama is nuts.  ^__________^
One of her favorite pastimes, I'm sure, would be to tease TRSDOS-chan with all sorts of funky new-fangled gadgets.  The reaction of the bigoted, technophobic TRSDOS-chan when she wakes up to find herself strapped to a giant mecha would probably be priceless (to the point where even OS/2-sama wouldn't mind the expensive property damage that would result).  ^v^;
That would be HILARIOUS!! :D

Suits QNX-sama well too- she keeps up with the times (being one of the two or three A$C members who represents a current OS) and is very technologically inclined, and most importantly... crazy!

Quote
Wish I could say the same.  Problem is, she's based on an uncomfortably LARGE number of people I've had the displeasure of knowing.  -.-;
And I thought I dealt with a lot of stubborn people!

Incidentally, the uncensored version of The Jungle is incredible; if you have not read the book before at all, I much recommend this version over the commercial one:

I've wanted to read "The Jungle" for some time now since hearing about it! And the original!

Quote

Ahiru-chan is quite the genius! Too bad she is highly misunderstood with few believing what she says :(

Almost done with page 14 and will post it up later today!

QuoteLike OSR 2.5-tan, Barbie Linux-tan has an assortment of jobs but mainly as a fashion designer and dress maker. While she needs all the money she can get, being a wanderer and what not, she wouldn't mind giving away a few of her dresses (especially to the Vintage-tans who are often tight on money and need donations!)

Fufu... well that may be true, but again I'm referring to the HUGE disparity in size.  ^^;

I know that the RL Barbie portions are ridiculously-freakish [in a disturbingly small kinda way...], but surely you spared Barbe Linux-sama from such a fate, and gave her a bust, waist, hips, hands and feet that are all proportional to her actual height, right?  ^___^

...

RIGHT?!!!  ^__________^;

*fidgets nervously*

QuoteThere is a rendition of GEOS-tan in the Vintage gallery:

Aw crap!  Almost forgot!  ^^;
Guess when you're knee-deep in OS-tan speculation as I am, you too would eventually forget to "lurk m0ar".  ^.^;

But do agree that the concept is cool, but needs a woman's touch.  ^__^

Well, to coin yet another phrase out of my butt....

"Extremes are the enemies of reason."

Especially in an educational setting, moving from one extreme (beating kids into submission) to another (pampering them or doping them) is still committing the same fundamental mistake (albeit from different ends).  Plus it also fails to address legitimate origins of behavioral problems, ensuring that they will always be around forever, churning out generation after generation of disenchanted youth.

Sadly, the true solution to these problems require time, money, dedication, confidence, knowledge, discipline and of course creativity -- ALL things that are in fairly short supply.  -___-

QuoteBrilliant quote!  The strong really do make the most of both outcomes- enjoy the victories and learn from their defeats!

I said it before and I'll say it again,... Aurora-hime's is a quick one!  Heck, if you ever have a term paper or something that requires some philosophizing, let me know.  Seems we can exchange quite a bit of thoughtful discourse in forum posts.... ^______^

QuoteHmm... How a retreat can be an offensive was a little baffling to me at first but it is akin to the phrase "the best offense is a good defense" so a defensive maneuver such as a retreat can work as an offensive!

Correct.  Those, btw, are otherwise known as "tactical retreats" -- you forfeit a little honor just to be able to fight the enemy another day, thin his numbers, or lull him into a false sense of security.  In Shougi, as in chess, a seemingly cowardly retreat often causes the overeager amateur to overplay his hand and weaken his own defense.  ^__~

QuoteI wonder, if "Shion no Ou" becomes highly popular, that it could greatly boost Shougi's popularity like how "Hikaru no Go" did to Go!

I think that'd be great.  However, I'm not 100% confident this series will get licensed at all.  -___-

Like 1984, it's the kind of stunning reading with deep political commentary that absolutely gets you kneeling at the edge of your seat in anticipation of the next page.  What might be striking about the original version of The Jungle is the depth of similarities of certain aspects of 1905 compared to their modern-day counterparts.  ^v^

Pampering kid-- err... snowflakes makes them feel good but often turn out unruly and highly unmotivated and from inability to get motivated, they get bored and unsatisfied with life.

On the other end, beating a kid into submission would make him/her submissive and never unruly but live in fear, afraid to try anything out of the fear of getting beaten again for doing it wrong. Either way, you've got unsatisfied and unmotivated kids for one reason or another. :(

What's needed is a moderate approach that is not abusive but gets kids motivated to succeed.

I'm so sorry I cannot reply to all this! But I will point out a few things...

Wow, I liked seeing these two new pages! Seeing System 1-chan discover newspeak was great, and I like her in her balldress. I liked the horses in page 14...you wouldn't know it, but I love horsies :P

QuoteIn fact she's already been legally excommunicated from the Cult 15 years ago, after she scared one too many young employees with her ferverous rampage about seemingly silly things (like not leveling out their name tags).

Haha! A crazy cultgoer, eh? I guess the GNU people wouldn't be the only ones.

I will agree that them Radio Shack folk are very cultlike. They blather inane ramblings, they're misguided, they're clearly brainwashed--I steer clear of Radio Shacks for fear that I'll be kidnapped and end up "One of Them" XD

Quote"Winners win and Losers lose, but only the Strong will make the most of Victory and Defeat."

Quote"Extremes are the enemies of reason."

Wow, those are profound...@____@

QuoteI've really gained a liking for philosophy from these discussions

I love philosophy, my friends and I quite often get into philosophical discussions, ranging from the deep (what was before the Big Bang? If there are parallel universes with "copies" of ourselves, do we share the same soul?) to the...petty (can true silence be attained? YES! In space!)[/quote]

Since I failed to add in a scene showing Lisa-tan's initial reactions to seeing System 1-tan in her new dress and with an invitation to the party, she appears in the first panel still struck with disbelief about the whole thing.

And really, Lisa-tan is NOT the one to talk about System 1-tan being slow and needing to hurry up! Okay, so System 1.0's (or actually, System 0.97 which is the actual System number of the Mac OS first released with the Macintosh) performance was not that great, mainly due to trying to run a full-fledged GUI with only 128 KB of RAM but at least it wasn't as nearly as slow as the Lisa was!

Ahhh, well I guess I can relate based on the Zerosanity Xmas comic.  However, in your case, the extra investment in time really shows via the remarkable use of lighting in your panels.  Its very gradual at first, manifesting in panel 3 as the trailing light from a distance source.  But in panel 4 there's a burst of beautifully-implemented lighting effects, from the inviting glow of the windows, to the sharp highlights on the trees, to the long shadows on certain objects.  And of course your use of stars adds another enticing touch to the night scene, already nicely complimented with stylized trees and rocks.

QuoteSince I failed to add in a scene showing Lisa-tan's initial reactions to seeing System 1-tan in her new dress and with an invitation to the party, she appears in the first panel still struck with disbelief about the whole thing.

I think that works out very nicely -- certainly great to see Lisa-chan's cute face of indignation.  ^.^

You can also make the case that, prior to ][-sama making her "fairy godmother" appearance, she might have had a small "chat" with Lisa-chan about her attitude, and probably scolded her into taking System I-chan to the party.  Lisa-chan may have been Father's daring child, but ][-sama was the primary breadwinner and thus had an awful lot of weight regarding what goes on in the house (or, for that matter, who gets to go to which parties).  ^.^

Amazing that with 4MB of RAM, Lisa-chan was still abnormally slow.  That would certainly classify System 1-chan as "small and nimble".  ^.^;

Incidentally, regarding easter eggs....

Is that by any chance a young Visi On-tan "stalking" her idol Lisa-sama from the balcony?  @v@

So that was time well-spent! I wasn't sure at first whether to add in all of the lighting and shading effects because it would be inconsistent if I did (not doing any of that before) and the scene wouldn't have the same impact if it didn't.

But then I realized, a lot of low-budget anime as well as most non-anime cartoons generally have little or no shading/highlights except when there are scenes with strong lighting effects (and it seems to work, even if inconsistent) and I decided to apply that here. So I don't know if that applies to manga or not, but what the heck! I went with it anyways!;012

Okay, ready to roll for a while.  ^.^

QuoteBut then I realized, a lot of low-budget anime as well as most non-anime cartoons generally have little or no shading/highlights except when there are scenes with strong lighting effects (and it seems to work, even if inconsistent) and I decided to apply that here. So I don't know if that applies to manga or not, but what the heck! I went with it anyways!

Correct.  Some manga/comics even do that too -- it's a common technique for depicting night scenes or other dramatic pitch-black situations.  It would be kinda boring to illustrate night no different than day, after all.  ^^

QuoteAhahaha... Cool!... ][-sama may be really nice, but is still able to scold a spoiled girl into submission and put her in in her place! But yeah, given how hard ][-sama works, she deserves some authority status!

Correct. Kind of puts a really hilarious spin to think that ][-chan, dressed as a sweet and innocent fairy godmother figure, was perhaps moments ago acting like The Godfather towards Lisa-chan.  ^_________^;

Fufu.. I kid I kid, but she probably wasn't happy to hear about the tearing up of System 1-chan's invitation.  -v-;

QuoteYes it is! In the next two pages, there will be a few more cameo appearances! (along with some completely random people)

Well in the world of the OS-tans, there is no such thing as random people -- just random personifications of programs, daemons, firmware, hardware, malware and games.  ^_______^;

*keeps typing*

Added after 23 minutes:

PAGE 16:

HOLY CRAP!  It's already Page 16!  Time flies when you're having fun, no?  ^^;

It's a small one-pager for dramatic effect, so not much to say here.  It IS a very wonderful and appropriate touch to have the old-timey Toshiaki speak in a rather old-timey, courteous manner.  The pace of the story at this point is very good -- it's fast enough to help you get to the end a lot quicker, without sacrificing much detail.  It just works.  ^^

Guesses for the haracters in the bottom are as follows, from left to right:

1 - Lisa-chan
2 - System 1-chan?  (hair looks a bit wilder, but then she is dolled up right now)
3 - Random program-kun
4 - PET-chan?  @v@
5 - EXEC-sama.  ^^

PAGE 17:

Panel1:  Begs the question who was introduced before System1-chan. ^____^

Let's see,.. more random people,.. let's see if we can unrandomize them for a second.... ^.^

Again from Left to right, going clockwise:

1 - Commodore 64-chan decked in her finest dress.
2 - Let's just say for fun that's a high-ranking Commodore-based -kun accompanying her.  ^___^
3 - Hard to deciper their randomness,... but let's just say (also for fun) that they're affiliated with the Acorn family of old.  ^.^
4&5 - Hmmm,... top-hat dude next to EXEC-sama.  One of her retainers perhaps?
6 - Visi On-tan!!  ...Or maybe not, she's hardly stocking here.  ^.^;
7 - Pilot-chan!!!!  Wow, she's as cute as a button here!  ^-^
8 - Girl w/ Marge-style hairdo.  Hard to say,... I'll just leave as random for now. ^^;

Panel 3/4:  The sweatdrops and overall concerned expreession effectively convey the nervousness she's feeling.  Funny how this may be the last time we'll hear her talking/thinking in OldSpeak.  ^^;

Panel 5:  BWAHAHAHAH!!!!!! ^V^
Lucky for her, Old-Timey Toshiaki-dono understands NewSpeak -- to be expected from a generation that grew up with anagrams, puns and word play.  There really is No Skool Like Old Skool!  ^.^

BTW, it really shows she's a novice at Newspeak at this point....

Quote from: "C-Chan"
Correct.  Some manga/comics even do that too -- it's a common technique for depicting night scenes or other dramatic pitch-black situations.  It would be kinda boring to illustrate night no different than day, after all.  ^^
Yeah, that would look boring without the night-time effects!

Quote
Correct. Kind of puts a really hilarious spin to think that ][-chan, dressed as a sweet and innocent fairy godmother figure, was perhaps moments ago acting like The Godfather towards Lisa-chan.  ^_________^;
*imagines ][-chan and Lisa-tan in the mentioned "Godfather" scenario* Hahahahahaha! That is just too funny!

...Feel tempted to... put that in.. as a ZS extra!

Quote
Fufu.. I kid I kid, but she probably wasn't happy to hear about the tearing up of System 1-chan's invitation.  -v-;
Sorry, you just got me tempted to do that "Godfather" scenario! XD
But seriously speaking, you're right. ][-chan would not have approved of Lisa-tan's behavior.

QuoteWell in the world of the OS-tans, there is no such thing as random people -- just random personifications of programs, daemons, firmware, hardware, malware and games.  ^_______^;
Oh! Of course!

Quote
HOLY CRAP!  It's already Page 16!  Time flies when you're having fun, no?  ^^;
it sure does!

Quote
It's a small one-pager for dramatic effect, so not much to say here.  It IS a very wonderful and appropriate touch to have the old-timey Toshiaki speak in a rather old-timey, courteous manner.  The pace of the story at this point is very good -- it's fast enough to help you get to the end a lot quicker, without sacrificing much detail.  It just works.  ^^
I really like the old-timey and courteous way of speaking! It's a shame that it is completely dead now :(

I think this is the first time I managed to do a comic at a good pace. My previous comics often turned convoluted, dragged on and got too difficult for me to continue. I still have not gotten to sketching the end, but I am near the end of page 19, with the end being on page 20 or 21 and being followed by a 2-3 page epilogue.

Then I can start the second story! However, unlike this story and the third one planned, I am really stuggling with the second one and will need  a lot of help soon.

Quote
Guesses for the haracters in the bottom are as follows, from left to right:

1 - Lisa-chan
2 - System 1-chan?  (hair looks a bit wilder, but then she is dolled up right now)
3 - Random program-kun
4 - PET-chan?  @v@
5 - EXEC-sama.  ^^
1. Correct! I seriously pity whoever gets that wrong!
2. Nope, it's Coleco Adam-tan! (note the frizzy hair)
3. Yup
4. No, PET-chan has dark hair and is probably much shorter. Good guess though. It's a random program-tan or something. Hmm... But what if she really did have light hair in her youth, and is wearing crazy high-heeled boots or something? ;012
5. Possibly.

PAGE 17:

Uhh... I'll have to leave that to your imagination ;012

He's awesome! However, his successor isn't so much(the Toshiaki of today is typically portrayed as a pervert and/or loser), or in the case of ZS: most of his successors aren't. There's that all-around good guy Toshiaki that has appeared but there's also a perverted Toshiaki, the nasty troll, the downright idiotic guy and the malicious hacker!

3. Possibly. Is the Acorn family an old-fashioned and classy bunch?
4+5. Whoa! that lady's got a strong, coincedental resemblance to EXEC-sama! (this was drawn about a month before my first EXEC-sama drawing) Okay... She is EXEC-sama then, and the guy next to her is an affiliate of hers!
6. No, actually that's Altair-tan! ^^; That was a tough one, but she has the same hair ribbons she was wearing in the Altair + Apple I-tan portraiture!
7. That's right! And she's scared because there's another GUI OS-tan in town! ^_^
8. Yeah... that's just a random character.

I updated the first post, adding in the details of the 4th story and adding more into the 2nd story (which I just got started typing the dialogue, etc. for!)

I struggled to think of how to start the second story (I mostly knew what to do for the middle and end, but not beginning!) but I finally got some ideas!:

- [circa early 1980's] The beginning part will include Xenix-san writing about Altair-tan (and how she is the only one of the old IBM-Microsoft family who knew of her)

- [the day of Xenix-san's death, circa early 1990's] The next part is the announcement of Xenix-san's death and even includes appearances by Plan 9-sama and Unix-sama to tie in a small connection to Bella's latest OS-tan manga! ;012

-Not sure if any of the girls of the old M$-IBM family were told of Xenix-san's death (probably not) but the M$ employees try to get rid of all of her stuff.

- [circa 2007 or 2008] The Binteeji Renmei's genealogist, ZX Spectrum-tan stumbles upon Xenix-san's old book that mentioned Altair-tan...

No wai! My comic is gonna get a reference in your comic...I'm so hononed! And I can't wait to see Plan 9 and Unix-sama.

This sounds like a really interesting idea, though. I'm gonna look forward to seeing this!

Now to review Aurora's newest comic pages...(oh the irony, as I'm writing this I'm listening to a radio advertisment for a local Mac store ^_^)

Page 15: Wow, I really like how you did the nightime effects here. I'm guessing you made another layer and filled it in black, and lessened the transperency? At any rate, seeing that indignate look on System 1-chan's face as Lisa calls her slow is golden! And I saw Visi On-tan leering from the balcony XD

Page 16: I can now say I like old-timey Toshiaki about 100% more than his mondern counterpart. And while I would have guessed that was Lisa on the far left, I wouldn't have gotten the others ;)

Page 17: Nervous System 1-chan is so cute here! But wait--does she only talk in Newspeak? Does she still think in...normal English...? I loved seeing all the cameos here. And while I was spoiled for who they were, I can clearly make out Pilot-chan and Altair-tan.

System 1-chan is cheek-squeezingly adorable, and seeing her speaking Newspeak is great; as if Toshiaki's perfect understanding of the language. Whatta man! XD

QuoteI updated the first post, adding in the details of the 4th story and adding more into the 2nd story (which I just got started typing the dialogue, etc. for!)

Whoops... well okay, scratch that "dump the 2nd story" suggestion.  ^^;

Wow, these are remarkable ideas, and definitely do much to turn a cut-and-dry story into something unique and beautiful.  ^^

I would imagine the M$ employees responsible for the destruction of the records didn't do a good job and simply buried them somewhere.  Thanks to good ol' fashioned intuition, the vintage-tans were able to locate the burial site even after so many years.

Though it probably took days to decipher so much new information (surely it wasn't only about Xenix-sama), it would've been an incredibly joy for 1.0-chan to be told of the existence of a long-lost relative.

QuoteYay! A tiny horse!

QuoteA tiny horse that oinks too! You don't see those every day!

QuoteThought it would be a neat way to tie in some other OS-tan's backstories!

Naturally, naturally!  When we talk "interoperability", we mean it!  ^__~

QuoteHe'll do something really courteous on the next pages!

*squeals with delight*  Yes I saw!  ^v^

[inserts shameless plug] Actually reminds me a little of myself.  ^___^ [/inserts shameless plug]

QuoteThat is a very good question! I'd say she still thinks in some normal English and that she still can speak it (although not as easily) but much prefers Newspeak.

Perhaps in the very sappy, soppy moments, she might slip in some standard English, if she's trying to cheer someone up who isn't in the emotional mood to decipher Newspeak.

However, all her famous quotes (like the ones I always sprinkle in my posts) are surely all 100% Newspeak by now. ^^

QuoteIs that a "Godfather" reference?

[note: sorry, major typo on my part.  Should be "...giant moldy apple core on her bed", not whatever i wrote while I was half-asleep.  ^^;]

Yeah, that's a parody of the famous Godfather scene, where a movie producer was "persuaded" to do xyz by the sight of a decapitated horse's head on his bed.  XvX;

QuoteI hope like other vintage and old-fashioned things, it will make a comeback!

Well, just like in Real Life, old fashioned mannerisms have not died off -- just displaced in other places.  Do some traveling to the East or parts of Europe, and you might find that kind of personality in the most unlikely places.  ^^

Quote
I take it that Amiga-sama is interested in humble and down-to-earth men while C64-tan is interested in powerful military men?

And/or that Amiga-sama loves ReactionGUY-kun (who is really short) and C64-tan likes taller men?

Well definitely "And".  In other words, C64-tan has particularly "mainstream" tastes, while Amiga-sama is never afraid to walk the path untreaded.  Actually, ReactionGUY-kun is a pilot and is actually kind of strong in the sense that he has peerless self-confidence, and doesn't have to bring anyone down (or pretend he's something he's not) in order to feel secure.  I don't recall if Raffaele gave me any personality templates, but I've always considered ReactionGUY-kun's personality to be similar to that of Sousuke Sagara from Full Metal Panic (minus the paranoid overreactions, but inclusive of the obliviousness for social norms).  ^-^

Quote
Okay... Here's where I need help with the second story. After Xenix-san's death, all of her records and information were disposed of...

And if they were all just buried, I imagine that either Windows 1.0-tan or 2.0-tan briefly saw the burial of Xenix-san's records (including the book in which she wrote about Altair-tan), and that the Vintage-tans consult The Smoking Gun-tan (who has records on nearly everything, including the burial!) or she finds them but what I am stuck on is when and how the mentioning of Xenix-san and the burial of the records is brought up x__x

Actually, I don't think 1.0-san or 2.0-chan witnessed anything (or even if 1.0-san did, she wouldn't be capable of telling them).  I imagine this could have been a point of contention during the research -- the fact that 2.0-chan wouldn't have been able to offer anything useful to ZX-tan probably made her very sad, and ZX-tan more motivated to diligently search via other means.

Here, however, is where good ol' fashioned "private eye"'ing comes in, and its no surprise that someone with the age, wisdom, thoroughness and pragmatisim of ZX-tan could easily be her own Sherlock Holmes.  ^__^

After all, M$ destroyed their own records, but just THEIR OWN records (and even did a shoddy job of it at that).  In looking through private periodicals of the era (as well as published press releases that M$ couldn't destroy), of course ZX-tan would have come across various mentions of Xenix-tan (as well as a few obscure mentions of an "Altair-tan", although she wouldn't have known that were anything important at the time) that she could ultimately use to "shadow" a timeline of events.

Any gaps in this shadow timeline that she couldn't fill herself after a while,, she would consult with Smoking Gun, who could not only give her more articles, but also lists of names (ex-employees mostly) that might no more.

Not afraid to get her hands dirty, ZX-tan would meet and befriend as many of these people as she could, likely through small social get-togethers (like cafes and stuff).  And like any good private eye, she wouldn't actually mention anything about Xenix-tan... she would just poke and prode around the subject courteously so as to not arose suspicion.

Eventually, a few of the more disgruntled ones would admit to doing terrible things in the past, for which her sympathetic shoulder would be offered to cushion their tears.  And after hearing confessions of every nature and kind, she would start to see patterns in their story,... common "burial sites" where company records were disposed of.

Naturally, the locations are only referred to by name, and as you know trying to find buried items in a place as large as a FOREST is literally like looking for a needle among a string of needles.  Thankfully, in between consultations with local villagers or Wanderers, as well as some helpful geomancy from GEOS-tan (aka, GeoWorks-tan), they probably came across most of the burial sites.  Then it was just a matter of getting the whole gang to grab a shovel and pitch in.

As a bonus to finding Xenix-tan's records, they probably ended-up unearthing a whole treasure trove of M$ secrets, that is still being deciphered by ZX-tan (and the mandatory assistants) to this very day.  ^_______^

Quote
Hmm... Assuming that it was at least put in a trash can, her book may not have decayed much. I know this because I have read through a catalogue that was buried in a time capsule for 30 years! (although some of the other books and catalogues buried were decayed beyond recognition. I guess it's just chance)

Naturally, naturally!  ^__^
It's not uncommon for computer users to assume that just because they hit the "delete" button, it's deleted forever (especially in that early era of Windows computing).  No doubt, her book and all of her records where just unceremoniously tossed into a trash can and buried.

It also should be conceded that at least half of the records they unearthed WERE actually disposed of properly and ruined beyond repair.  This actually would make ZX-tan very sad, as she considers the loss of someone's proof of existence to be the worst possible tragedy (and probably the reason why she makes it a crusade to document everyone's history).

QuoteSure would! It would also be a shock to 2.0-chan who thought she knew everything about her family but she'd be delighted to meet Altair-tan too!

Also goofed there,... meant 2.0-chan, not 1.0-san.  Not to say 1.0-san wouldn't be happy either (she'd be ecstatic), but she wouldn't realize it until she actually SAW Altair-san before her.

Funny how she wouldn't need to be told Altair-san is family -- just by looking at her, she would know.  ^^

QuoteHere's page 18:

I'll be right back. ^__^

*holds typing momentarily*

Added after 2 hours 7 minutes:

Nice-u!!  ^^

It seems we're getting closer and closer to the end. ^.^

PANEL 1:  Seems System 1-chan's anxiety is not ill-conceived -- her arrival might've been seen as an omen of things to come for all the OS-tans of the day (even PilotOS-chan made people pay handsome sums of money for a GUI system, and Lisa-chan almost thrice that).

Also should note you're no stranger to using gradients to add visual drama.  ^___^

PANEL 2:  GWAH!  That's an adorable side-shot of 1-chan.  ^____^
However, since its an angled shot, you should still be able to see a bit of her right arm -- that, or move her left shoulder closer to her body.

It's very nice of Toshiaki to comfort her so.  ^^

PANEL 3/4:  Wow!  Now THAT'S what I call a great movie reference!  ^__^
(referring to Masayuki Suo's 1996 masterpiece, "Shall we Dance?"  ^v^)

PANEL 5:  Sparkly-eyed 1-chan.  ^x^

PANEL 6:  That is a very sweet scene!  It's wonderful to see 1-chan's dream come true!  ^__^

I guess not ;012

Indeed! While there are many families and factions in this OS-tan world, they all tend to mingle in all kinds of ways!

Perfect! I agree!

[note: sorry, major typo on my part.  Should be "...giant moldy apple core on her bed", not whatever i wrote while I was half-asleep.  ^^;]

Yeah, that's a parody of the famous Godfather scene, where a movie producer was "persuaded" to do xyz by the sight of a decapitated horse's head on his bed.  XvX;
Hahahaha! I must draw that!

Well definitely "And".  In other words, C64-tan has particularly "mainstream" tastes, while Amiga-sama is never afraid to walk the path untreaded.
Suits both of them well!

QuoteActually, ReactionGUY-kun is a pilot and is actually kind of strong in the sense that he has peerless self-confidence, and doesn't have to bring anyone down (or pretend he's something he's not) in order to feel secure.
He's perfect for Amiga-tan! Those two were MEANT for each other! But too bad that some of her relatives disapprove, favoring ZORRO-kun for her.

Quote
Actually, I don't think 1.0-san or 2.0-chan witnessed anything (or even if 1.0-san did, she wouldn't be capable of telling them).  I imagine this could have been a point of contention during the research -- the fact that 2.0-chan wouldn't have been able to offer anything useful to ZX-tan probably made her very sad, and ZX-tan more motivated to diligently search via other means.
Since ZX-tan likely asked 2.0-chan about Xenix-san, I know how it could have been brought up! ZX-tan was working to expand on her genealogy reports and when reviewing info on Xenix-san, she was hoping to consult some primary sources! (those who knew her!)

Apparently 2.0-chan doesn't have any memories of her. But does PC DOS-tan still have any memories of Xenix-san?

Quote
Here, however, is where good ol' fashioned "private eye"'ing comes in, and its no surprise that someone with the age, wisdom, thoroughness and pragmatisim of ZX-tan could easily be her own Sherlock Holmes.  ^__^
I really like ZX-tan! I admire her diligence, wisdom and adventerous ways!

A detective's mission to find the burial sites... I like it!

Quote
After all, M$ destroyed their own records, but just THEIR OWN records (and even did a shoddy job of it at that).  In looking through private periodicals of the era (as well as published press releases that M$ couldn't destroy), of course ZX-tan would have come across various mentions of Xenix-tan (as well as a few obscure mentions of an "Altair-tan", although she wouldn't have known that were anything important at the time) that she could ultimately use to "shadow" a timeline of events.
I bet that the Windows-tans of the M$ Family aren't allowed to read vintage periodicals because they could end up discovering all those bizarre truths that M$ has been trying to shield from them all these years!

I'd also like to add that in the scene that they first read the mentioning of Altair-tan, one of the Vintage-tans is surprised and wonders if it's the same Altair-tan she once encountered (She has been recruited for the Binteeji Renmei at least once by some Vintage-tans but declined. And at least one of the Vintage-tans knows that Altair-tan is still alive but none of them actually know anything about her)

Quote
Any gaps in this shadow timeline that she couldn't fill herself after a while,, she would consult with Smoking Gun, who could not only give her more articles, but also lists of names (ex-employees mostly) that might no more.
The Smoking Gun is there, and a great help to the Binteji Renmei's resident detective and genealogist! :D

Quote
Not afraid to get her hands dirty, ZX-tan would meet and befriend as many of these people as she could, likely through small social get-togethers (like cafes and stuff).  And like any good private eye, she wouldn't actually mention anything about Xenix-tan... she would just poke and prode around the subject courteously so as to not arose suspicion.
Good strategies! But I wonder what she would say exactly to get them to talk?

Or how about using good old fashioned interrogation? ;012

Quote
Eventually, a few of the more disgruntled ones would admit to doing terrible things in the past, for which her sympathetic shoulder would be offered to cushion their tears.  And after hearing confessions of every nature and kind, she would start to see patterns in their story,... common "burial sites" where company records were disposed of.
ZX-tan is so nice! And because of her kindness, no interrogation was required! ^_^

Quote
Naturally, the locations are only referred to by name, and as you know trying to find buried items in a place as large as a FOREST is literally like looking for a needle among a string of needles.  Thankfully, in between consultations with local villagers or Wanderers...
Sweet! Opportunities for many wanderers to get cameo appearances! (although one of them will not be Altair-tan for really obvious reasons but one of the wanderers to appear will be QL-tan!)

Quote
as well as some helpful geomancy from GEOS-tan (aka, GeoWorks-tan), they probably came across most of the burial sites.  Then it was just a matter of getting the whole gang to grab a shovel and pitch in.
GEOS-tan is a geomancer? Awesome!

GEOS-tan will be one of the next chibi OS-tans I'll draw.

Quote
As a bonus to finding Xenix-tan's records, they probably ended-up unearthing a whole treasure trove of M$ secrets, that is still being deciphered by ZX-tan (and the mandatory assistants) to this very day.  ^_______^
Bwaahahaha! I wonder who would be assisting ZX-tan with the deciphering!

Quote

I felt sad over the decayed stuff from the time capsule I helped unearth so I can relate to that.

Not to mention that she was likely being compared to Lisa-tan, PilotOS-chan and Visi On-tan meaning that System 1-chan certainly needs to live up to her hype! And this is also why she has the tendency to push herself to her limits (also referring that the original Macintosh had a full-fledged GUI while having only 128 KB of RAM, which was barely enough!)

Awww, this new page is so cute! I love seeing nervous System 1-chan and Toshiaki's interactions, like her coaxing her out from behind the curtain with a bit of smooth talk. I can see you've confrimed that she does in fact think in English in panel 1! And Dreamy eyed 1-chan is adorable, as is the scene where they finally dance!  ;010

QuoteWell definitely "And". ^-^

It's times like this I'm glad I'm not into writing romance stories/comics, or else I'd be having a field day right about now :P

Actually, until I heard about this ReactionGUY-kun, I'd never given much thought of any OS-tan's relationship with an OS-kun. (Okay, except for maybe Homeko/Homeo/Secchan/Hacchan.) I never really saw Amiga-san as the girlfriend type, I thought the only thing she was married to was her charity work! XD

Cool! I can't wait to see her!

IIRC, there was a GSOS-tan done already, by the Amiga Workbench-tan artist. But I don't think she was very cute, not by a long shot... : |
