Title: OS-Tan banners
Post by: Fedora-Tan on January 26, 2007, 02:22:08 PM
I'd like banners authors to make a small description and a title for their banners, so i'll edit the download section accordingly.

Please check banners here : http://ostan-collections.net/downloads/banners/

If you submitted any, please send me the desc & title in a PM or just here.

Thanks ;hi

Added after 47 seconds:

N.B. If i don't have this, title and desc will stay the filename. Works, but less fancy :p

Just stop spamming and do the descs  ;051

Besides, that's a true fact i don't post often in the OS Tan section... main reason ? i don't have much things to say, i'm more a lurker :D

*notices*  What the hell?  1789?  At this rate, I'm gonna start quoting historical facts from my post count....!  ^_________^;

Don't have much time, but let me at least leave you with one to see if you like the format or not....

Os-tan Collections Daioh

"Windows 3.11-tan and Kamineko-style DOSKitty in a parody of Azumanga Daioh"

That work, or you need something a little more elaborate?  ^^'

It's exactly what i want, even if ultimately you can put any description you want. I put that right now in the download and you'll can see how it looks there.

Thanks :)

What i wonder is if i should reduce the banner (it's just a thumbnail)... since description looks a bit compressed like that. I'm just too lazy to re-edit all thumbs Ã,¬Ã,¬

Hmm... Like this?

(http://ostan-collections.net/downloads/banners/Tsubashi_OSXbanner.jpg)

Mac OS X "Leopard" Banner

"a collage centering around OS X 'Leopard'-tan"

and

(http://ostan-collections.net/downloads/banners/Tsubashi_OS9banner.jpg)

Mac OS 9 Banner

"A simple banner featuring OS 9-tan superimposed upon a classic 'Finder' background"

Obviously unimaginative titles, so feel free to change them.

Thanks again!

It's just i didn't have any imagination for making titles or descriptions, so i just put the filename for title and desc Ã,¬Ã,¬

Just go to the banner folder :
http://ostan-collections.net/downloads.php?cat=5

Edit yours and put some title and desc. No need to make more than 1 small sentence for desc, something like C-Chan or Tsubashi above is very ok.

Not an emergency either, just when you have time : it'll look better (and it's the only reason, btw.)

N.B. I resized all thumbnails so they don't get half of screen anymore.

Added after 39 seconds:

Of course it's not needed to put yours in this thread. Just edit directly :D

Are animated .gif's acceptable for banners? What is the preferred maximum size?
Title: OS-Tan banners

GOSH!  ;013
I forgot to give the thumbnail view for NT and Inu-T banner!
How much size (in px) would u like for the thumbnail, Fedora-tan?
Title: OS-Tan banners
Post by: Fedora-Tan on January 26, 2007, 09:19:33 PM
Banners are 450 x 90 (it's not a max size but a fixed size), either .jpg .gif or .png

Animated banners are not accepted at the moment since I think they are too heavy in size ( > 100kb) but if you can prove a light animated banner, why not ...

To be honnest, i never thought about it :D

@panithan : i'll make the thumb it's ok
For reference, it's 300 x 60  (66% of original)

Added after 24 seconds:

Great banner btw, i like it much ^_^

Added after 4 minutes:

convert NT_Inu-T_banner.jpg -resize 66% NT_Inu-T_banner.jpg

Done :p
I already made the ~15 before, i can make one more :D

Added after 3 minutes:

Besides, just noticed, but would it be possible, without quality loss, to have it a bit smaller than 70kb ? I assume it could be possible since our other banners all have 30kb max... That's not so bad but if it's possible, it could be nice.

(If it decreases quality, just leave it as it is, would be a loss)

Okay, here are the remainders....  ^__^

I feel like Aurora making my titles into puns, but feel unoriginal if I do otherwise.  -v-'

Too bad I never finished the Matrix banner yet (featuring Linux-tans), but maybe in time.... ^__^

BTW Fedora-dono, now that you're in our turf, how about visiting one of the threads for at least some quick Linux-tan chit-chat?  ^___^

Except for KamiTux and Aurora, the Linux-tans continue to be largely ignored on this board,... even now, I still have no clue what everyone believes GNU/Linux-tan's personality should be.  ^v^'

I did it! 98kb animated banner:
(http://i95.photobucket.com/albums/l129/Myrdin_2006/chase_banner.gif)
It could be made even smaller by discarding some colour information and snapping to web colours. Of course, then I could add more frames so that it's less choppy. Eh. Maybe eventually.

Quote from: "Myrdin"I do like pork!

Hmm... I see it at the top but it's not in the banners section.

Yes. Since the random banner script is independant from the download section, it doesn't check if a banner is actually accepted or not. Therefore, it's available instantly as you upload it. When validation comes, it'll stay and appear if OK, either it'll be removed. That doesn't change much things, and avoids an extra check for the banner script. I'll make that check only if it's necessary... and it's not atm since anyway banners provided are good.

... and you showed an animated banner can be < 100kb AND very good :D

I was sort of scared to have flashy banners and such with 500kb but animated banners like this are just excellent  ;010

Added after 4 minutes:

To sort good banners and less good ones, i'd suggest the democratic vote :

If, after 10 votes, a banner has less than 5/10 then i'll remove it from the pool.
Since votes are anonymous, it seems a good way to sort banners.

Alternatively, i can show only the 10 / 15 or 20 best rated ones, if you think it's better.

Else, we can just show all, like now (but sorting banners may be difficult)

Damn, your animated banners are smaller than some non-animated ones ^^;
Out of curiosity, isn't the red background a bit aggressive ? Would require to see it in place (on a dark blue backgound, it's probably less aggressive than on a white back like posts :D )

I think i prefer the original one, here the darker background makes the area around the text all foggy, which looks less good in my opinion.

That said, i've a flat panel which is *very* aggressive when it comes to red colors, so we should really see other comments to know if it's me, you or if it's just flawless like it is :D

GYAH!!  MYRDIN, THAT ONE'S FANTASTIC AS WELL!!  ^0^
And your continued mixture of canon OS-tans with rare ones is above and beyond admirable!!  ^V^

Call it,... "holy"....  -v-

*sighs with happiness*

From my end, the first one looks better.  The red may seem a bit aggressive, but this is Homeko you're talking about.  ^^'
A "cabaret" feel (enough to scare off poor OS3-chan) would be kind of appropriate for her.  ^v^

My only thought is to (if at all possible) try out a variant with:

1) White lettering over red background.
2) Black background in lieu of white starter one.

...might produce an interesting effect.  ^__^

Oh, and pork is forbidden....  ^.^

great oggly moggly I cant tell them apart anymore!! >_<

Anyhow, continuing our discusion from the what you want changed here thread,  I belive that the rating system is a perfectly legitimate way for us to decide the frequency of the banners.   As more banners get submitted (especialy at the rate we are going now) we will have a massive amout of them eventually and some thining of the crop may be nessicary.  The proposed meathod is probobly the best way to do that.  Plus, it will ensure artists are taking their time and making the best banners possible to try to get higher ratings and keep their banner posted.  Quality needs standards and such
Title: OS-Tan banners
Post by: Fedora-Tan on January 27, 2007, 02:28:14 PM
Besides, i decided with myself that our banners max size will be 100kb.
Please respect that size if you do banners ;). (i'm not against a small extra, but keep in mind it's not a goal to reach either.)

Standard banner is therefore : 450*90, 100kb max (average are 30kb and it's a good size). You're free for the format (.jpg, .gif, .png).

About rating system, i didn't mean to be rude, just that while i appreciate the work done and even if there are no "bad banners" (so far), there is always a risk to have anything submitted. Also, since anyway banners will show prior moderation, i decide (with myself, again :D) to make a "posteriori" moderation. That means, all banners will be accepted by default, but they'll can be erased if they don't fit. That means also i make you confidence on the banners quality.

I don't plan to make the rating / ratio soon, was just an idea "in case of". I'll have to make comics page before that, more interesting IMO. But it's interesting to know how _you_ (everybody) want that to work in future.

Added after 1 minutes:

N.B. Animated banners like Myrdin ones are accepted. If you plan to make bigger banners or fully animated ones, please post here prior so we can discuss that.

Added after 1 minutes:

Also, PLEASE make an effort to make a thumbnail in your uploads. (300*300 max). While it's not mandatory, it's really more easy for anyone to browse. Thanks ;hi

Added after 1 minutes:

Post Post Scriptum : Default value for "Free" field on uploads should be "yes". I'll try to make that a default so you won't be bothered, in the meantime please set that to "yes". That's for banners only. For other downloads, default value is "no". ^^;

(http://i95.photobucket.com/albums/l129/Myrdin_2006/saba_banner.gif)

Marvelous work with the animated genki Saba-tan, and it seems fairly readable to me!  ^__^

It is a damn shame about the file size, because since this one just barely meets cap, that means we probably can't get anything longer or more dynamic.  ;___;

If only there wouldn't be so many compatibility issues, an SWF banner could help squeeze out more animation for our buck.  ^__^

But if Niijura had to take their adorable walking ME-tan logo down, that can only mean bad news for Flash files.  ^___^;
Title: OS-Tan banners
Post by: Myrdin on January 28, 2007, 12:58:20 PM
More elaborate animations would be possible in B&W. It might also be possible to do more efficiently. The lightbulb banner(my favorite so far) is small because there's only four objects and minimal dithering. This new banner has a seperate object for each step Saba-tan takes and eight more frames.
Title: OS-Tan banners
Post by: Fedora-Tan on January 28, 2007, 03:56:49 PM
I can make an option for people accepting "heavy" banners (and heavy graphics), thus allowing more bandwidth-expensive banners for those who want to.

Flash banners could be an option if we do that way.

Besides, Myrdin, your banners are just awesome ;hi

No problemo, we can fix you up with Flash.... ^__^

Granted it's no cakewalk if you want to do complicated things, but simple animations can be done with little more than the first couple of pages with the help files.  -v-

Granted still you can compress the animations further if you use vector rather than raster graphics, but that too can be arranged if you're interested.  ^___^

ahh good old image ready... not -_- I stand by photoshop.. but image ready just sucks.. its the worst for trying to do frame by frame animation -_-

It ain't THAT bad, but agreed,... ImageReady interface could be a little more intuitive.  -v-'

I thought MotionArtist would be easier to use than Flash -- but if you can't produce anything by playing around with controls on first-go, chances are the interface isn't intuitive enough.  Despite the Actionscript hell and clunky native vector graphic tools, you can use Flash decently just by keeping to the default stuff.   ^__^

Prior anyone works on flash banners, i'll first *check* if they can be embedded without problems.

Added after 34 minutes:

I made a test here. Please report if it works or no.
Please also state which browser you are using and any glitches that could show.

I selected a big flash on purpose (~7Mb) so if it works for this, it'll work for everything.
It's troubled windows opening, don't forget to click on the button to start the animation once it's loaded ^_^ (if doubts, just download the real thing in the download section).

Should have sound as well.

For me it works (Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; fr-FR; rv:1.8.0.9) Gecko/20061219 Fedora/1.5.0.9-1.fc6 Firefox/1.5.0.9 pango-text)

Added after 33 seconds:

My, my, I forgot the link ^^;

Worked for me (Safari 2.0.4 and Firefox 2.0.0.1), no noticeable glitches or quirks. It will be cool if this works!

I mostly fear about IE since i used XHTML strict tags, from universal and standard W3C. Therefore, i assume it'll just NOT work with IE ^_^

Added after 2 minutes:

Works with Opera :)
(Opera/9.10 (X11; Linux i686; U; fr)

Added after 6 minutes:

Works also with IE under linux, only difference is IE doesn't support transparency, therefore the video looks a bit bugged.

Tested on IE5, IE5.5 and IE6, same results.

Added after 2 minutes:

I spoke too fast, the flash crashes if I click on it under IE5 ^_^

Unhandled exception: page fault on read access to 0x00950b58 in 32-bit code (0x70fb85c0).

Touche.... ^__^

Sorry,.. slowly phasing out all M$ products, so can't help you aside from more Firefox tests.  Works great both on Xubuntu and XPME (w/ Firefox 2.0.0.1), btw.  ^^;

I had forgotten how cute that opening theme is.  ^.^

I'd need a sample (even ugly and static) of a 450x90 banner in flash format to see how it looks like in the real thing. Please make it as small as possible regarding filesize... even if i don't have any illusions about that.

< 100kb would be awesome but ... ah... i'm told it's not possible ^^; Too bad :D

Give me 6 hours and I'll have something for you ASAP.  ^___^

Might be beatin' to the punch, though, but then again my Flash banner will probably be in the single digit KB range.  ^.^

Yeah, Image ready is not bad if doing frame by frame animation with layers and no onion skining is your cup of tea.  It was not ment for that.   Hell it down right sucks for that. Unless you want static images that move over the file.. id find something else soon Myrdin.  Flash is good.. but hooking you up would be pirating Im sure.  Tho I admit that my copy was once pirated, I did eventually go out and buy it to show my support of the program.

as I intend to for the prog that C-Chan gave me.  Thanks agian btw.  your bacon is safe for now.

Flash is good for its interface for the frame by frame animation.. but im not happy with its drawing tools. Lines are not pressure sensitive, so you have to draw with the brush, and that prevents you from using tools to modify fills only.. because your lines count as fills too.  Ive seen rare flashes that look real good.. but for the most part.. its graphics are too.. simple.. the price you pay for small file size.

BTW, the flash banner showed up fine on IE 7 (which I use) so no problems there.  The troubled windows opening is sooo tiny o_o

*phew*  My precious meat sources are safe then.  ^^'

But not to worry about the Flash acquisition, as there's more than one way to skin a cat.  -v-

I'm always on the lookout for open source Flash applications, and apparently OpenLaszlo seems to show some progress, among a few other possibilities.  I don't think it has its own drawing tools, though, but then this in combination with Inkscape SVGs should work.  Theoretically anyway,... haven't tried it yet. ^^'

Then there's the cheaper (and sometimes, better) alternatives to Flash, such as MotionArtist, Swish, Anime Studio and Toon Boom.  Toon Boom, in particular, is more artist friendly (although perhaps a bit too cluttered for my tastes  ^^;).

And yes, drawing tools for Flash or horrible,... I guess it's intentional so you go out and buy Adobe Illustrator (or at that time, Macromedia Freehand).  ^___^;
Unless you have the patience of a Buddhist Monk, prework on Inkscape or Illustrator is a must when doing keyframes in flash.  -v-'

Added after 7 hours 26 minutes:

Hello Fedora-dono.  ^__^

Well, okay, I didn't optimize this to be a single digit file-size (the dancing Windows 2.0-tan is still done frame-by-frame for accuracy in a separate project), but at least it's only 57KB in size.  ^__^

It should make a nice sample, I hope...  -v-

Please bear in mind that it may look REALLY REALLY large when you open it in a new window...  ^^;

Since it's not bigger than a regular banner, i put it in the pool.
You'll can see it if you're lucky ^_^ (works for me)

N.B. You'll never see it in my sig, i just changed for the (forum) top banner actually.

Great work ;hi

QuoteNifty-Sweet! Great job Senpai, that will make a great banner!

Fufu... thank you Tsubashi-dono.  ^__^
But the finished version might make a better banner,... this one just makes a good test.  ^__^

QuoteI'm a horrendous artist so pushing layers around is just about all I can do. It'd be nice to see what the others here can do with more advanced programs.

Well, I guess I can't hit you on the head for that self-criticism cause I basically say the same thing about myself.  ^^;
But if you claim not to be a good artist, and still manage to produce banners of that quality,... hell, that's some phenomenal improvisation.  I salute a fellow improviser!  ^v^

*salutes*  ^__^\

Bear in mind that all Flash programs are really just glorified layer pushers at the minimum, so if you ever decide to take the plunge, you'll wonder why you never did so earlier.  ^.^

The banner I made was hastily done and barely cranks out content that I couldn't otherwise do on a GIF,... but with a little more effort, you can seriously start approximating mini-movie quality output for only low kilobyte consumption.  ^__^

QuoteSince it's not bigger than a regular banner, i put it in the pool.

I really meant it only as a test since the Para Para scene is still unfinished.   But I guess if it is working for everybody, I suppose it wouldn't hurt to keep it on there for a while.  ^__^

I'm not seeing any problems with it either, except that the light blue background shows up as a transparency layer....  O__o

The end effect is kinda cool, though, so maybe I won't fix that....  -___-'

QuoteN.B. You'll never see it in my sig, i just changed for the (forum) top banner actually.

That's okay.  ^__^
I know there are a lot of Flash-heavy sites that are so seamless they don't bog me down one bit....

http://www.kitco.com/

...but I still get the uneasy feeling someone out there is cursing me out for that banner.  ^^;

QuoteI changed the ownership of this banner to you (C-Chan) in the downlaod section, so you'll be free to edit title, desc or anything. You can remove it as well

I understood it's just a test, but it doesn't harm at all here, on the contrary. I've no free time enough to make tests on another test board so i do most test realtime there. That's why some of you may have encountered some errors from time to time ^_^

Anyway, i'll investigate about this transparency thing.

Added after 3 minutes:

Removed the transparency layer. Besides, the flash banners are not clickable anymore (or i don't know how to make that posible, except putting actionscript in the flash of course). Not a big deal, but no need to report it either, i'm aware of that.
