Title: My 20th -tanniversary Project
Post by: Bella on May 18, 2025, 09:39:45 AM

Decided to spin this off of my main art thread (https://www.ostan-collections.net/forum/index.php/topic,466.0.html). As I near the 20th anniversary (!!!) of my registration (March 15, 2027), I wanted to do something special to celebrate this website, the community and little world of characters that we've built.

Had the idea to draw a massive OS-tan group pic, one character per day, between now then, in the simplified art style of some of my other not-quite-as-large group (https://www.deviantart.com/bellacielo/art/Island-of-Misfit-Toys-147932619) pics (https://www.deviantart.com/bellacielo/art/The-Secret-Lives-of-184959262).

I expect to run out of characters or space between now and then, but that's a bridge to cross when we get there.

Starting canvas (9300 x 7200 px)+ Week 1 lineup:

18 days in and still not out of Windows-tans...

A small update this time. Hoping to post my progress weekly, and this gets me to week three. Neptune-tan is one of my favorites among the Windows, I was happy to finally get around to her. Windows CE, Odyssey, Server 2003, and the other 95 OSR-tan will round out this group ... might throw in a Windows 97 or Server 2008-tan cameo later. (I do want to have some -tans "where's waldo"'d away from the rest of their group.)

Gotta decide who I'll tackle next - the Linux-Unix family or Apple/Macs. Moreover, I need to decide if I want to insert any set pieces / setting around the different groups of -tans; I thought about it but can't figure out what I want to do.

This is amazing I wish I could draw like you. Where is Windows 11-Tan?

Thanks!

Is there a consensus on a Windows 11-tan design? I've seen a few around, but I'm wary of using the designs of non-OSC-originating "fanon" OS-tans. Unfortunately I expect to run into the same problem with post-Lion Mac OS X-tans, as I don't believe any of them have widely adopted -tans - if they have -tans at all. T_T

The most common design for Windows 11 is a small loli character that is honestly depicted in ways I'm not the biggest fan of. She's often drawn in ways I would not be comfortable having a child depicted in.

Yeah, I've seen that design around on pixiv as well and know what you mean. :/

Sketchy depictions aside, I don't get the design language of her as recent Windows-tans tend to trend ... big so to speak, and nothing I know about Windows 11 suggests small/simple (as is the case with the DOSes, early Windows, early microcomputers etc. -tans who tend to be small and child-like physically).

SO TRUE, Touko made more sense as a Windows-tan than this weird sassy child we seem to have for 11.
At least with Touko the trend was making her a psycho yandere.

So we need to work on a Windows 11 then.  Or someone does, that's about fifty years too advanced for my field lol

I still have mixed feelings about official OS-tans but I did warm up to Touko working on this. I don't know much about her personality tho so I'm delighted to hear this.

Honestly ... I would be game if I had ideas. Most of what I know about Windows 11 centers on tightened security, reduced user customization, recording everything the user does, and AI integration, which I feel like you could spin into OS-tan design concepts. (Right off the bat I see her as a dominant and surveilling type. Yandere anyone?) I don't know I want to give myself a headache figuring out how generative AI maps into OS-tan terms though.

I wouldn't mind taking a stab at post-Mavericks Mac OS X releases. I feel a bit bad saying it but a lot of the newer OS X releases have run together in my mind. I've thought making one encompassing Mac OS X-tan to cover the ARM releases, though I realize that's very against tradition.

You know more than I do, but yandere definitely fits that description well.

Once I stopped using it I totally lost track.  Although now that we've had an up-close encounter with ARM history maybe...

I've also thought about how to involve ARM history into a hypothetical Mac OS X 11-and-onward-tan. (Or -tans.) But I haven't gotten beyond "possible friendship with RISCOS-tan"...

The -tan of something older and rarer, and one I've used this year. :)

I'm partial to my fanon's version of the Windows 10-tan as a hivemind knwon as the Decima. -w-

Already maxed out the canvas in Procreate, I'll just have to tile in another panel if I run out of space!

Arch Linux, Octopus & Plan B (Plan 9 variants), Solaris and Xenix-tan!

References are getting harder to find, it may be affecting my velocity on this. (That and the other art / projects.)

Oh?
IMHC, there are three separate IRIXen: 4D1-tan (as IRIX was originally known), the usual IRIX-tan, plus separate OS-kun for IRIX 5 and IRIX 6.

QuoteIRIX 5-kun (English name Isaac Clark, Japanese name Isaku Shoki [書記委策]): A larger gentleman who appears to be in his late 30s or early 40s with a bushy beard, always jovial and clad in aloha shirts, with whom his sister is generally embarrassed to be seen. I think he should have the same powers as his sister, but I don't see him wearing shades like hers, just regular eyeglasses.

QuoteIRIX 6-kun (English name Indigo Clark, Japanese name Mugen Shoki [書記無限], usually first-name mononymous in both languages): A high-school or perhaps early college-aged kid with short blue hair and shades in the same style as his sister's, who wears a silver body- or tracksuit with glowing indigo lines, and is of a similar disposition to his sister. Was wed to Linux-tan in an arranged marriage in the late 90s (when it was rumored that SGI was planning to replace IRIX with a custom Linux distribution; regardless, SGI was and is a massive contributor to Linux) and lives aboard her spaceship. Wears socks only when aboard, as he hates the sound of his footfalls echoing throughout the corridors. He and Linux-tan created the fighting game M.U.G.E.N as a sort of pocket universe, thus explaining the presence of OS-tan characters.

QuoteThe Irixen (4D1-tan, IRIX-tan, IRIX 5-kun, and IRIX 6-kun) are probably benefactrices and -tors of the Vintage Federation since, in the real world, the Computer History Museum is in a building formerly occupied by SGI.

I don't have much written down on our Discord server about the Decima, because a lot of the building for that was on another community's server which has long since imploded >:(, but the Decima Project is a hivemind of various nodes that collectively represent Windows 10-tan, and they communicate externally in unison when necessary.
