Post by: Chocofreak13 on September 26, 2008, 04:06:54 PM
hmmm. the main os-tans spoken of are from the 90's on. (i said main, if 3.1 tan is from the 80's PUH-LEEZE don't errorbomb me.)

there WERE os's earlier, y'know.

i'm gonna make some! <3
hope they come out ok.......(sorry, nervous since i don't really have friends here)

There are already a lot of OS-tans from the 80's and earlier, but I'm happy that you are interested in the older OS-tans too, and even willing to create your own! :D

BTW, do you have a favorite vintage (pre-90's) OS or computer?

I'm listing this all from memory, but the pre-90's OS-tans (also includes some home computer-tans which blur the line between OS-tan and hardware-tan!):

--1980's--
MS DOS-tan, PC DOS-tan, Windows 1.0-tan, Windows 2.0-tan, OS/2-tan, Pilot OS-tan, QNX-tan, Solaris-tan, OS-9-tan, Apple Lisa-tan; the Macintosh System 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6-tans, A/UX-tan, GS/OS-tan, Amiga-tan, Atari TOS/Atari ST-tan, GEM-tan, ORIC-tan, Commodore VIC20-tan, C64-tan, C128-tan, C65-tan, Coleco Adam-tan, QDOS-tan, ZX Spectrum-tan, Visi On-tan, RISC OS-tan, Ultrix-san

--1970's--
VMS-san, Apple II-tan, Commodore PET-tan, Atari DOS-tan, MITS Altair 8800-tan, IMSAI 8080-tan, Apple I-tan, DR DOS-tan, RSTS-san, Xenix-san

--1960's--
Multics-sama, Unix-sama, GECOS-san, CTSS-sama, ITS-san, RT-11 (?), RSX-11(?), WAITS-san

--1950's--
GM OS-sama (the oldest actual OS-tan, released in 1955!), GENIAC-chan (considered the second oldest personal computer!), EXEC-sama (who is actually the oldest OS-tan character, EXEC was first released in 1962 but EXEC-sama also represents the whole UNIVAC line of computers that EXEC runs on, dating all the way back to 1951)

damn! all of them have already been taken. (well, actually, i did find one that's not on the list. but i'm not saying it, for fear that someone will come out with it before me. >_<)

That doesn't mean that you can't draw existing characters. But it is cool that you want to create vintage OS-tans!

Yep, I concur with the integrity of that list -- although with the Gallery and the Wiki pretty much offline UFN (=Until Further Notice), it'll be hard to "lurk m0ar" in order to see how they look like.

Best bet, if you'd like to check out some vintage-tans, is to rummage through the OS-tan fan-fics, Comics and fan-stuff, although granted you're talking about THOUSANDS of posts to skim through.  ^^;

The Mini Midnight Madness thread, though, is a good primer (as it has an index) even though all the OS-tans featured are in "Mini" form (not quite the same as "chibi").  ^^'

Slightly offtopic, but ontopic at the same time, I think.

This is just a curiousity question: Would Windows 1.0 be simply called "Windows-Tan?"  Asking because as far as I know the original version is just called "Microsoft Windows," not "Windows 1."  Just wondering, thanks ^^.

^She is known as Windows 1.0-tan, despite the original Windows OS not getting designated as "Windows 1.0" until after 2.0's release.

Siya made a concept sketch of SAGE-tan:

She's depicted as a blind woman in a military uniform, with a very decorated overcoat. She also wields a rocket launcher and other huge guns!

Most things are thought of by somebody.

That is a quite calming thought, in one perspective...

...but when you realize it's the INTERNET, it's not so much so anymore. -.-

Well, I see that there are other microcomputers such as Spectrum-tan, C64-tan, CoCo-tan, etc.

BUT

There is no Dragon-tan.  The Dragon 32/64 was a Tandy CoCo clone made in Wales, UK from 1983-1986.  I have just come into posession of one and feel she should be added to the ranks of the OS-tans.  I think I'll have a conflab with the Dragon User Group to see what they feel she should look like and what her personality would be.

the -tan i was working on was acorn-tan, an english computer used in the 80's-90's i believe

she also had a squirrel named arthur, one of Acorn's models.
Title: old-tan?
Post by: Red-Machine on October 29, 2009, 03:00:31 PM
Is that generic Acorn-tan?  Like Amiga-tan?  Also, Arthur wasn't a computer; it was Acorn's self-made OS that they used up until 1988.

Acorn had several models, ranging from the BBC-backed Micro to the Archimedes.  They were the last British computer company to fold, I believe.  Circa 1996/7.

Title: old-tan?
Post by: Red-Machine on October 29, 2009, 05:14:00 PM
Absolutement!  Acorn-tan should be a very proud girl, and keen on education and television as Acorn's most succesful computer was marketed by the BBC (our biggest television company) and used primarily in schools.  The RISC PC that they developed later (later called the Archimedes) was also used in schools, and was extremely powerful, using the most successful processor ever designed (the ARM).

Also, she should have a pet owl.  An owl was used as the BBC Micro's logo and the Archimedes was named after Merlin's pet owl!

Okay, here are some of my preliminary notes for the current day SAGE.  Sorry for how fragmented they are.

Common Name: SAGE
Alias(s): Whirlwind II, Gena
First Appearance: 1958/StewartSAGE
Original Creator: Siya

OS Personified: Semi-Automated Ground Enviroment (SAGE)
OS Developer: MIT, SDC, IBM

Last Stable Release: 1983?

-All of her Senses are very poor, when they aren’t useless; wears glasses but they don’t help her eyesight (due to be disconnected from her actual 'eyes' the radar stations)
--All her sense can be improved by being in contact with other  â€"tans
--assisted by BUIC (Back Up Interceptor Computer) sometimes

-prefers colder place
--the needed AC for the computers

-wears part of her old air force uniform mixed with civilian clothes, and a worn overcoat

-blue skinned with light yellow lines tracing a map
--represents the SAGE plotting board

-brown hair with red & white checked ribbons

-mid thirties in apparent age
--Young SAGE drawn by Chocofreak
--Mature SAGE drawn by Bella
--Combat SAGE drawn by Aurora

-easily distracted by quick movements

-Out of touch with the world, speaks in 60s slang if she uses any

-Doesn’t like birds but they seem to like her
--Problems with interpreting returns off birds

-Doesn’t like to be called Whirlwind since it’s a misnomer

-Likes to watch planes fly
--reminds her of her old job

-may still be around because of the few still extant AN/FSG-7 pieces

SAGE-tan’s heyday

-wore full Air Force blues

-self assured and cocky

-Knew how to fly

-Certain of her capabilities
--pre Birds and the ballistic missile threat

-Excellent vision

-Quite chatty with her younger brethren at the detection sites

-Proud of her job

Relationships:
Knew of Multics and Bell Labs UNIX but dismissed them as toys, later her view softened towards Multics after they worked together in the 70's. Apple III-tan became one of her few remaining friends several years ago when she helped out with some of her research.  Her only childhood companion was a GENIAC assembled by the development team that she grew quite fond of.  She considered CTSS-tan a younger, weaker sister.  Her dislike of UNIX-sama never left her, but it has been sharpened by her paranoia and loneliness.  Other contemporary opponents WAITS and ITS.  She has contempt for pretty much every 'modern' OS-tan.

In the original preconcept, she was originally a long-deceased character, but it's good having some evidence that some SAGE systems still survive today. :)

Hehehehe! That she knew of Multics and UNIX but dismissed them as toys made me laugh! I like SAGE-sama's attitude! She must be very bold and daring! :D

I like all the backstory you added in, since none of us before really knew anything about SAGE's history aside from being one of the very first OSes ever, and was used by the U.S. Air Force. It's sad that a once powerful and confident character hasn't stood the test of time well, losing nearly all of her senses, and becoming out of touch with the rest of the world. :(

Where do you think her whereabouts would be today exactly? Affiliation-wise, I think she'd be a wanderer living on her own.
Title: old-tan?
Post by: Chocofreak13 on October 31, 2009, 11:34:33 AM
it says she's cut off from the rest of society, trying in vain to get through the old, worn lines of communication says to me that she's trapped somewhere, either forcibly or, more likely, by choice, as it is one of the few places she knows.

GASP. I REMEMBER WHAT STORY I WAS THINKING ABOUT!

it's reminiscent of the movie Sunshine, about a space missionto revive the dying sun. the main characters of the movie are aboard the Icarus II, and during the trip, they come across the distress signal of the Icarus I, which was launched and lost 7 years prior to the date in the movie. (movie continues but is irrelevant to topic)

SAGE-tan makes me think of that, because imagine being stuck aboard a space shuttle, trying in vain to contact for help, when there is really no hope, as no one is looking for you, and all contact is out of reach. how lonely and sad it must be. (great movie, i loved it, but it was the first movie to truely scare me in years.)

Great design for Acorn-tan, Choco!  You may want to add a BBC badge to her breast pocket or something.  A good 80's one is here:

Very good observations and ideas, StewartSage! It's clear you've put much thought into her design and know your stuff. :) Her poor eyesight is certainly backed up by Siya's design, as is her paranoia and independent nature.

I dunnot about the blue skin thing (I'd perfer seeing blue and yellow clothing), but everything else is golden.  ;010

Yep, I remember reading that but I knew that some of the old computer gear is in museums and prop companies.

Quote from: "Aurora Borealis"Hehehehe! That she knew of Multics and UNIX but dismissed them as toys made me laugh! I like SAGE-sama's attitude! She must be very bold and daring!

In her day she had quite the forceful attitude, she viewed the idea of personal computers as quite silly as a whole

Thanks, its a joy to help bring a classic OS to life.  I have to say I really couldn't see a way around a surviving SAGE-sama being anything but broken.

Quote from: "Aurora Borealis"Where do you think her whereabouts would be today exactly? Affiliation-wise, I think she'd be a wanderer living on her own.

I'd say definitely a wanderer, although she may occasionally try to find someone to talk to, perhaps traveling between the abandoned SAGE control centers.

Quote from: "Bella"I dunnot about the blue skin thing (I'd perfer seeing blue and yellow clothing), but everything else is golden.

Yeah, either skin or perhaps the overcoat.

Quote from: "Bella"edit: Oh, and her dismissing Unix-sama and Multics-sama sounds like something she'd do, for sure. I see a delicious hate-triangle between the three of them. ^^;

Maybe not hate for Multics but certainly few positive feelings, actually she's sort of an aunt to Multics considering MIT played a part in both development projects.  Probably significantly more bitter feelings towards Unix, maybe she blames her for her own downfall and the rise of the 'toys'.

Here's a concept chibi of SAGE-tan, based on Siya's concept sketch and Stewartsage's description:

Keeping with the blue + light yellow scheme, her shirt and pants are blue, and the trim on her coat is light yellow. In this concept, her coat is a cross between a military overcoat and an aviator jacket. Not sure if it works, but I tried. :-/

Nice! She looks fierce, probably from when she was still in service ;012.  It looks like everyone is lining up to draw SAGE-sama, maybe I'll write a story about her......

Actually I was going more for an intimidated/paranoid look, but in her heyday, a sneering look may have worked well for her! :)

I like your take on SAGE-tan too- her uniform is very elegant, and more faithful to siya's concept sketch than mine was. Or we could compromise and say that yours and siya's renditions are SAGE-tan in her full military uniform, mainly for show and wouldn't be practical for combat, while my design of her wearing an aviator jacket would be more practical for combat.

Here's a new OS-tan character I made a concept sketch of: Cray-1-tan.

For technical details, the Cray-1 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cray-1) is one of the most successful supercomputers and is regarded as the first true supercomputer, released in 1976, with a clock speed of 80-160 MHz. Each one sold for $5-8 million, and over 80 were sold, which is actually considered successful for such an expensive computer. For years, it was the world's fastest computer!

Each one is customizable in appearance, with different-colored panels on the sides. So for Cray-1-tan's dress panels and earrings, they can change color. I'm still not fully decided on her hair color or eye color though. Also not decided on her height, but I know she'll be very tall.

The Cray-1's design is influenced by "Star Trek", and also designed for optimal speed and efficiency, and also was used to produce the movie "Tron".
---

In Cray-1-tan's heyday, she was extremely formidable and a proud member of the Mainframe Guild, but later got outclassed by younger and more powerful members, and she was unable to catch up with them.

She might live as a wanderer, as one of the Independent OS-tans, or stays in the Guild for old time's sake, as she is very wise and able to contribute wisdom to the Guild. Still not completely decided. She is also an artist and a sci-fi fanatic. From being humbled by those younger Mainframe-tans that have surpassed her in sheer power, she has abandoned her originally megalomaniacal and belligerent attitude, and is a lot more down-to-earth. It's for her own good, really.

Good design, Aurora-san.  160MHz?  That was faster than my first computer in 1996!

I thought the same thing; there's no law saying an os-tan can't have a few different outfits in her wardrobe. ;)

And I really like your design for Cray 1-tan! I've always liked the CRAY computer (so darn cool looking), but never had the thought to make a -tan for one.

Is she a hardware-tan, or did Crays run their own native OS too?

I wonder how tall she'd be too. (C-chan always proposed that those Mainframe-tans would be, like, uber-tall, but that rule seems to have been bent a lot).

The Cray-1 had a few OSes. Its native OS is the Cray Operating System (COS), but it was replaced by Unix variant UNICOS in the mid-80's.

For her height, I had in mind somewhere between 180 [5'11"] and 240 cm [7'11"]. yeah, real precise there. T_T

Ah, thanks. I never heard of COS.

And why not compromise and make her 210 cm? :P

Agreed, I think there is more than enough room in her wardrobe for two uniforms.  Wouldn't want to mess up those ruffles!  The aviator jacket is a nice touch for her battle dress, you can almost see her gesturing imperiously at the plotting board with a pointer telling the operators what to do.

Do it!  The more the merrier.  Still brainstorming plot ideas for a possible story about SAGE's wanderings.

I had to go look up Cray-1 again but I have to say I like the design.  Supercomputers and hoop skirts seem to go well together.

I suddenly remembered something: In the OS-tan backstories, I had in mind SAGE-tan and Apple III-tan knowing each other, as a reference to the series "Lost", in which both systems were used to save the world! :)

Yeah... That'd be a good team. A paranoid and neurotic military leader teaming up with a emotionally unstable pyromaniac! :D

It's looking really good so far! Poor SAGE-sama. She's not just lost her vision and power, but also her sanity! :(

I actually could imagine SAGE-sama being friends with GENIAC-chan, especially since GENIAC-chan is hardly threatening by anybody's standards. She can also play a good game of Tic-Tac-Toe! :D
Title: old-tan?
Post by: stewartsage on November 11, 2009, 08:46:53 PM
Poor SAGE-sama, all she wants is Tic-Tac-Toe and some permanent peace of mind.

My line of thinking was that since she actually is a child, SAGE accepted her.  Maybe some of the engineers were tinkering around with a GENIAC kit for fun during SAGE's development and the two bonded while playing around.  There could be some potential for all sorts of zaney adventures with GENIAC-chan and SAGE-san ;012
Title: old-tan?
Post by: Aurora Borealis on November 11, 2009, 08:58:56 PM
I really like that idea! :D I've wondered what GENIAC-chan's life would have been like in the 1950's, since  I haven't written down anything about her early life.

She's not human, but rather a living doll that needs to be operated by someone, and when she was abandoned in 1960 (for some reason or another, but the GENIAC line was discontinued circa 1960), she ended up in a coma, finally awakening after being discovered by one of the vintage OS-tans somewhere... more than 40 years later!

GENIAC-chan now lives in the Binteeji Renmei/Vintage Federation OS-tan faction, and is close friends with EXEC-sama, another OS-tan from the 1950's. Still, I imagine that GENIAC-chan would want to also go visit her old friend SAGE-sama!
Title: old-tan?
Post by: stewartsage on November 11, 2009, 09:40:15 PM
All your dreams (may) come true then!  Plus, there may be a flashback to her assisting Apple III-tan saving the world.

Never fear, I researched GENIAC-chan ahead of time when I first started thinking about writing some tales about SAGE-chan.  Considering most engineer's attention wouldn't be held long by her, they gave her to SAGE to operate thus keep both of them occupied.

As to visiting, SAGE-sama is quite convinced GENIAC-chan has followed her (SAGE's) "sister" CTSS-tan to the grave, a visit from her childhood friend would cheer her up considerably.  If they could find her, she isn't exactly seeking out the company of the older OS's due to her precieved disgrace.

Yes! This is a great story!

I'm curious about SAGE-sama's mother that was mentioned- what's the conflict between them?

Awwwww... SAGE-sama doesn't know what really happened to GENIAC-chan, and it's so sad they had to be separated when SAGE-sama entered service. Was this because she was required to 'grow up' and stop doing 'kiddie things'? Still wasn't nice of SAGE-sama's higher-ups to make her abandon her childhood friend like that.

I want to draw a comic where the two of them reunite!
Title: old-tan?
Post by: stewartsage on November 13, 2009, 10:02:20 PM
Thanks!

I consider her mother to be the Project Whirlwind computer, which was originally used by MIT for the tests that led to SAGE's creation.  The issue is there was a misconception SAGE was the unbuilt Whirlwind II.  Even though she continued project support until '59 she was located at the main MIT campus in Cambridge, not really giving them much of a chance to connect.  I don't think there's really a conflict, per say.

Her only assumption would be that since she was gone there'd be no more use for GENIAC-chan.  Pretty much, she had to dedicate her attention to her job starting in'58, plus she left Lincoln Labs behind then too.  SAGE-sama sort of moved on and became wrapped up in her work.

You should!
