One of Unix-sama's idiot progeny.
She has hundreds of descendants (THOUSANDS prior to the Unix Wars of the early 90's), but none are still fit to succeed her.  (Linux-tans offer some hope, but they're not really part of the Unix bloodline).

It's hard to gauge the full scope of the threat when only Linux-tan and Linspire-tan are shown with any regularlity.  But in reality, this, my dear 95-san (or 2K-san, based on that quiz), is what you have to compete against:

You might recognize a familiar enemy in there, btw....  ^___^;

Oh my dear surprising unexpected world-collapsing universe-stumbling history-remaking empire-crushing family-backstabbing... I run out of words.

I'm... I'm... I am... me, the Windows-Microsoft sympathizer, the one not being involved in the MS-bashing, the Windows family lover... I'm...

I'm Apple OS X.

Not like I've anything against other families... but I'm a Windows, they're the only ones I can relate with! Ohh, this makes me so vexed, like an identity crisis this is!

Where are my roots... v_v

Nah, but seriously, you could read the Wikipedia entry about this magnificent platform/OS here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amiga

Back in the beginning of the 1990s, it was years and years ahead of PCs/Macs/whatever in both visual and audio, and well, in pretty much everything that can be thought of. Succumbed to a shocking defeat due to mismanagement, though. v_v

Perhaps in the distant future, we can program our own quiz to expand the range of OS-tans (and update some pictures -- the current OSX-tan is a touch outdated, there's no 3.1-sama, and they still have LONGHORN!  O.O.

Well that does bring up another point.

Once an established Vista design is settled upon,...

http://ostan.blackdiam.net/viewtopic.php?p=7003#post_7003

...now the question remains, will we simply "disappear" Longhorn (as she technically IS Vista), or will we still acknowledge a separate OS girl as representing her (sort of like the prototype of Vista)?

Hmm,... maybe this calls for a referendum as well....?  -v-
Title: Which OS-Tan Are You?
Post by: brougeXP22 on October 01, 2006, 03:40:33 PM
i say keep her as the original and create vista as a new serperate OS girl
Title: Which OS-Tan Are You?
Post by: Aurora Borealis on October 01, 2006, 05:32:37 PM
But if there is a Longhorn-tan and a Vistan, and they are technically the same person, wouldn't that cause some sort of time paradox in the OS-tan world? ;020

But I am in favor of keeping Longhorn-tan, because I've seen some really cool ones but of course if we all decide to keep Longhorn-tan, we'd have to do another "Vote for the best character design" thing just like for Vistan.

Bam! I just had an idea!

- Longhorn-tan represents "Longhorn" Server, which comes out in 2008
- The Rozen-Maiden Vista represents Windows Vista Ultimate
- The Screw-haired Ninja Vista represents Windows Vista Starter
- The "Screwy" Generic Schoolgirl Vista represents Windows Vista Home Basic
- The Blonde-Haired Loli w/ Long Pigtails & Windows Logo Hairclips Vista represents Windows Vista Home Premium
- The Shikijou Saori-Knockoff Vista represents Windows Vista Enterprise
- The Blonde-Haired Loli w/ Long Pigtails & Longhorn Logo Hairclips Vista represents Windows Vista Business

Or something along these lines...

QuoteNewYinzer, methinks you hit on a fantastic compromise! ^V^

Yeah. I had thought of it based on the idea that many different OS-tans were used for different versions of Windows XP. However, my idea is for different designs to represent different versions, and I suggested which design should fit each version. The current versions planned versions of the OS are:

- Windows Vista Starter
- Windows Vista Home Basic
- Windows Vista Home Premium
- Windows Vista Business
- Windows Vista Enterprise
- Windows Vista Ultimate

BTW, Longhorn-tan was originally meant to be the design for Vista. However, MSFT officially changed the name of the OS to Vista, while making the codename for Server 2007 is "Longhorn". The problem we'll be running into is whether people will be using the current Longhorn design for Server 2007, or designing her as another Saba. Personally, I think there is no sense in any of the Saba-tans besides Server 2003.

Title: Which OS-Tan Are You?
Post by: SleepyD on October 08, 2006, 11:00:11 PM
My suggestion, instead of making separate versions, we just give them weapons of various strength.  I mean, What kind of weapons... I don't know.

What are they armed with usually, anyway? I see 2k-tan with this massive gundam-like sword thingy, 95 obviously has the katana... what else do they have?
Title: Which OS-Tan Are You?
Post by: C-Chan on October 08, 2006, 11:44:36 PM
Come to think of it, 95-tan is the only Windows-tan I've seen with an official weapon.  Sure, I've seen 2k-tan with said sword and the other girls wielding some heavy firepower and certain one-shots; but other than that, you don't see them dueling much....  ^^'

So before engaging in the fun project of arming Vista-tan, I agree with you in that we should engage in the even more fun-filled project of arming the existing Windows line-up....  ^v^'

For example, is Me-tan's Scallion-O-Death really the only thing she wields?  `v'

Recently I've seen the two 98-tan's with some intimidating-looking halberds.... ^__^'
Title: Weapons?
Post by: MisterCat on October 09, 2006, 12:18:18 AM
Must the OS Girls carry weapons?  Isn't it enough that the games genre is filled with violence, as is the balance of the anime and manga genres?  Even if I was enamoured with depictions of hostility freaks on killing rampages, which I'm not, I'd still wonder why they run about with clubs and spears in this era of drive-through firearms shops.

If XP-tan ends up being required to carry weapons, let me suggest she pack an old government-issue Colt .45-caliber semi-automatic pistol.  Just the sight of that gun will keep the knives-and-swords types at a respectful distance.

Title: Which OS-Tan Are You?
Post by: C-Chan on October 09, 2006, 06:53:10 AM
Somehow, I thought you'd ask that....  ^__^

Don't worry, what I really am getting at is that I doubt any of them are seriously armed, so unless we arm Vista from the get-go, not sure if the idea will fly with everyone.

Presumably since the OS-tans are symbolic representations to begin with, the weapons themselves are symbols.  That's the reason how Windows 95, equipped with a katana, can fight on even footing with OS/2-tan, whose equipped with a Star Trek era phaser.

Ultimately, an OS-tan's power lies both in herself (technical prowess) and in the strength of her userbase.

(Large Windows user base = substantial power and resources to supplement a technically inferior product.)

C-Chan added the following  1 minute after last message :

Indeed, C-Chan, your friend and mine XP-tan has a nice tan now!  I was tired of seeing all these pale-female types, so I took XP-tan on a vacation to the Hawaiian island of Kaua'i.  She did a lot of surfing ââ,¬â€ being quite familiar with the phenomenon ââ,¬â€ impressing all the locals and getting a thorough tan thanks to the selection of Brazilian tangas available at island shops.  (She ended up with a long list of telephone numbers, by the way.)

Wow, I'm late to this conversation. True, weapons probably won't be a permanent part of most designs.  I like the idea of battles against errors, worms and viruses. ^^

You are Apple Dos. Simple and primitive with a good understanding of the common man.  You're still a work in progress, but a good start.

GNU's not Unix (yes, that is what the abbreviation means, G for Gnu N for not and U for Unix). The HURD is an OS which is under development since the 90ies and still has not reached 1.0. It is repeatedly joked to come in half a year and have Duke Nukem Forever on the ISO-image as well as using E17 as default desktop (which is a joke because both programs are vaporware).

Added after 2 minutes:

Oh, and that quote is old,... eComStation is DESTINED to revive OS/2 for the 21st century!  ^v^

Title: Which OS-Tan Are You?
Post by: C-Chan on March 06, 2007, 11:19:30 PM
Well it's for a placcard, no?  Doesn't really have to be proper English, but regardless the phrase does seem to be grammatically correct.  ^v^

There is an free OS/2 project out there, but it's really more like a Linux distros pretending to be OS/2 (much like AROS is an independent OS pretending to be Amiga).  ^__^

You can't blame people for trying, but unless IBM/M$ finally let go of poor OS/2-tan (and by consequence, eCS-chan), we'll never have a true free successor of OS/2.  -.-

Serenity Systems can't do it, because eCS is built on OS/2 and IBM holds the license to it still.  And while IBM has been relatively friendly to the OSS community, they certainly can't release OS/2 because some of the original code belongs to M$.  (They're powerful-enough to try, but,... meh,... I guess they won't.  ^^;)

OS-tan:

You are Windows XP. You are the newest Windows girl, and fairly popular. You’re pretty stable, and easily the prettiest of the bunch, but you can also be a bit shallow and you’re always hungry. Also, why does your name look like the irritated emoticon?

I agree! Need an updated OS-tan quiz!

There are several things that make that one obsolete such as there's no 3.1-tan, 95-tan is not the oldest, no Saba-tan, XP-tan is not the youngest, no 98SE-tan, there is no longer an official Longhorn-tan (in fact, I think there ever was one), no Vistan, no Linspire-tan, no CE-tan, the Mac OSX-tan was only a one-shot rendition and there is now an official one

I have learned how to make online quizzes but I haven't successfully attempted one like that though

As for making a new OS-tan quiz, if anyone decides to makes one I'd be glad to help with ideas! It should have more OS-tans, not just the Windows and Mac-tans. Maybe Amiga-sama, OS/2-sama, and a few Linux or Unix-tans...

And apparently I'm .HTML as well

You are Windows 98. You are the second oldest of the windows girls. You’re neither beloved nor despised, but many people still use you. You also have a box you keep with you at all times, for reasons known only to you.
Title: Which OS-Tan Are You?
Post by: Smokey on May 23, 2009, 04:08:57 PM
AHA!!!! 98 is the THIRD oldest (not counting windows 1 and 2)!!!!!!!!

also
(http://mx.geocities.com/xiwang_zitzit5/ostan/2k.jpg)

You are Windows 2000 Professional Edition. You are the most stable and reliable of all the Windows girls. Of course, since your main comparison is with ME, that’s not saying much. You’re popular with some, but you’re being replaced with XP. You often help take care of your sister ME.

More like it needs to be updated a lot!

Heheh... I remember back in 2005-2006 when Longhorn/Vista's release date kept getting pushed back and I wanted to bet whether Duke Nukem Forever or Windows Vista would be released first! (BTW, development on Duke Nukem Forever was recently canceled altogether.)

Quote from: "Aurora Borealis"More like it needs to be updated a lot!

Well, yeah, but I was hoping to entice someone by making it sound like less work than it is.

QuoteI wanted to bet whether Duke Nukem Forever or Windows Vista would be released first!

For me it was between Nukem and Chinese Democracy (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chinese_Democracy), but usually I just stuck with the old joke about there being democracy in China before Chinese Democracy would be released... then I would say "Where's your oxymoron now, Axl?!" XD

Quote(BTW, development on Duke Nukem Forever was recently canceled altogether.)

Really?  Not that surprising, but still, the last time I checked (a day or two ago) it was just shelved again.

Quote from: "Chocofreak13"i know i'm mysterious sometimes, but......longhorn? really? :\

The result you got was more or less a kind of stock answer that test makers use when they run out of personality traits to associate to a particular result.  Lazy test-making, that's all it is...
Title: Which OS-Tan Are You?
Post by: Aurora Borealis on May 23, 2009, 10:21:18 PM
I've read it from only one source so I'm not completely sure but it's reasonable to assume that Duke Nukem Forever has been canceled altogether because development started in 1997 and gaming has changed a whole lot since then, and it would be very costly and time-consuming to update all of the graphics and gameplay to 2009 standards.

From my understanding, 3D Realms had started again on DNF in 2007, so if you look it up, there's actually quite a few screens out there demonstrating DNF is up to current-gen standards (http://www.shacknews.com/onearticle.x/54940) (in terms of graphics).  Of course, even if the graphics were up to par, there's the question of gameplay, and even more so than graphics, shooters have improved greatly in gameplay.  In Nukem's absence there have been a slew of new franchises that have brought in major innovations (like GeoMod in Red Faction, Halo's Physics Engine, and the cover system in Gears of War).  Chances are DNF's biggest selling point would the signature crude humor.  Rumors of the games' cancellation have started due to 3D Realms releasing the development team working on the game, but they're insisting they'll still be continuing development of the game (riiiiight).  Take Two Interactive (the parent company of the legendary Rockstar Games) is currently involved in a legal battle with 3D Realms, alleging breach of contract due to the lack of satisfactory progress on the game.

Anyway, that's seriously OT, sorry about that.  Still, who's good at making personality tests?  I mean good, not some simple "I know exactly what answers to fill in to get the result I want" test.

EDIT:  btw anyone else amused by the initialism of Duke Nukem Forever (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DNF)? lol
and I mean the one right under Duke Nukem Forever XD

Title: Which OS-Tan Are You?
Post by: Smokey on May 24, 2009, 06:04:11 AM
Okay, yes that test is a bit outdated , single gendered, and very easily manipulated...

Second, such a test here would be a fun idea...

And third, Duke Nukem Forever is Vaporware (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vaporware) like S.T.A.L.K.E.R., wich eventually got released and got good reviews...
On the other hand DNF won Wired News' Vaporware Award 8 times, plus Wired made the Vaporware Lifetime Achievement Award exclusively for DNF and obviously awarded it to them...

Also;
Quote from: "wikipedia"After thirteen years in development, 3DRealms halted production of the game after closing on May 6, 2009, and all employees who worked on DNF had been let go.
But isn't this a bit OT?

OS/2 is an advanced OS that was developed in collaboration between Microsoft and IBM in the late 1980's and was expected to be even more successful than MS-DOS but didn't catch on very well (and was left to IBM) because of Windows 3.x's and Windows 95's success. OS/2's support by IBM was ultimately dropped on Dec 31 2006 but still has a very strong and loyal userbase.

If you're curious: Wikipedia article on OS/2 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OS/2)

There also exists an OS/2-tan, who is a Star Trek fangirl and has a huge vendetta against the Windows-tans after being betrayed by both of her companies and wants nothing but revenge against the Windows Family despite the odds she is against.

Mac OS X
Linux (I don't know any verities)
...
Feel free to suggest more, but the longer the list of tan's to be included, the longer it will take to make the quiz.

Hmm... Maybe we should make it less gender-specific too. I mean like, why would a male wear 'sexy schoolgirl' style?

xD

Plus, we need MOAR choices, MOAR. The whole wikipedia list to be exact, well except the not famous ones.

Are you a male?
If yes, you are Linux. (Just about the only male in the community apart from a certain pervert)

I meant the os tans in the wiki of os tans. o_O

Maybe I should make my own site-kun.

http://sylentspace.org/
Gonna expire this 24th, better renew it soon.

How about Homeo and that male XP-Pro variation, and the 95?

Oh yeah.... the list should be done FIRST then the questions.

Then we make some sort of attraction list to each question like;

Sexually confused?
if 'yes'
Homeo   +1
XP Pro    +0

And probably some negatives too.. I'll upload it to my site afterwards.

I don't think you should skewer the entire quiz just because they answer yes to that question.  For example, it could be stacked 99% in their favour that they are 98-tan, but they answer yes to "Are you a pervert?" and they get bumped to Dr. Norton.  Not the best idea in my opinion.
Title: Which OS-Tan Are You?
Post by: GTCD on October 12, 2009, 10:02:52 AM
I concur.

And the quizilla format is more like the yes and no, but you can choose how far you agree/disagree.
Screw it, let's just make multiple answers, that'll save a lot of questioning.

Homeko and Norton are perverts, yeah, and there should be an answer like 'probably, but I don't really show it', that'll be more towards Homeo.

Objection your honor!

Using this technique, the user ofthe quiz could expect the results, which leads to inaccuracy. In addition, more questions must be made, thus boring the user.

I suggest more questions that specifies to certain, but not one, results.

Ok just for the hell of it.
Example:

Describe yourself:
A pervert
A hot chick
A cross-dressing human

See? We're killing two birds with one stone here lawl. With questions that give more choices means less questions, unexpecting (but precise) results.
But yes, we could usea few questions that specify to a person though.

Dun.

I'm not even bothering calculating the efficiency rate of that, since I know it'd be quite bothersome to set up; also, the downside of your "unexpectedness" is inaccuracy. If you just make the quiz long enough, you can achieve unexpectedness without losing accuracy.

(Then again, it's a quiz, not expecting some damn oracle here -w-)

There you go, list get.

Oi, oi.
Saseko wouldn't wake up until 9, and then she'd go eat fuckloads of meat for breakfast, then she'd go to sleep again. Or something.
ME would wake up at 8, on the second, and halfway through dressing herself she'd FREEZE and remain so until noon.
Homeko would still be up, but Homeo would force her to go to sleep with his wiles and she'd have sweet yaoi dreams until 3pm.
2k always goes up an hour early, to get some extra paperwork done. Her morning RAGE kicks in at 8, prepare for asswhopping.
95 rises with the sun. She makes breakfast. Don't ask, you don't want to be skewered.
ETC, ETC.

I could tell you about most of the OS-tans in the secondary list on the previous page. These descriptions and a few of these characters are only fanon but here we go:

95 OSR 2.1-tan [fanon only]: A calm, polite, friendly and forward-thinking OS-tan who is an old-fashioned inventor... who fails miserably at her job. She lives on her own.

95 OSR 2.5-tan [fanon only]: Cheerful, hot-blooded and very competitive.

97-tan: Cheerful and hot-headed, but lacks self-confidence, has a 'Napoleon Complex' (that is she's insecure about being short and acts tough to compensate).

Odyssey-tan and Neptune-tan don't seem to have defined personalities but seem to be stoic and keep to themselves.

Mac OSX Tiger-tan: Bold, charismatic, energetic, a great leader but prone to power struggles. She tends not to take criticism well from her peers.

Mac OSX Cheetah-tan: Very tough, mischievous, and perverted but clumsy and lacks self-confidence.

Mac OSX Snow Leopard-tan: Still not sure.

Linspire-tan: A Windows fangirl who really wants to fit in and be accepted by her peers, but she is an outcast among the Windows-tans, most of the Unix-tans and the more conservative Linux-tans. :(

CONGRATULATIONS!
You are Slackware Linux. You are the brightest among your peers, but are often mistaken as insane. Your elegant solutions to problems often take a little longer, but require much less effort to complete.

That is soo me since I do that a lot, also people don't really understand what I am talking about or I make some really removed topics as a tangent.

That is soo me since I do that a lot, also people don't really understand what I am talking about or I make some really removed topics as a tangent.

Are you also highly attracted to Unix-tans? ;P (Weird Slackware-tan reference).

Bella is VMS. She's reads your mind through the INTERNET.

Added after 12 seconds:

Don't ask how or why that works.

Don't worry, I know how it works. The DS has it built-in. (That is how the story never goes the way you want it to)

Despite the OS-Tan link being down, I took the other one, and got Windows 95. No bother there. 95 was the first OS I used as well.

Let's see ... oh, good, it's not asking me to sign up for some ridiculous "offers" ... ah, here we go.  I'm ... Amiga?

... wait, I gotta go Wiki that one.  Last time I heard anything about Amiga, it was a PVP strip about Brent's choice of computers -- years ago.

I have taken it several times, and every time it's giving me some useless version of Leen-ucks.

... D:<

I guess I can't really give a result, since it's not too legit if you have to try every different combination just to see if Windows is even on there.
