Hey, I just wanted to ask if there are any reasons why the forum might be running unusually slow? It takes ages to load a page (in the forum or wiki) and make posts. It's been like this for me since yesterday.
I've tried clearing my cache to no avail, and it seems like the problem isn't limited to Firefox because it's also sluggish in Safari. It's not a major inconvenience, but I figure it's best to bring up any problems I'm having.
Sure, you're right to do it !
I'm interested in that kind of feedback actually, any others / from other ppl ?
It's been like that for me since late last week; I figured it was Steam deciding to download updates for all of my games all at once, as everything seemed slow, but even on my laptop (Which doesn't have Steam), OSC is noticeably slower than other sites.
Also, there was a point where it would randomly show me as being logged out last Sunday (Which was when the site was at its slowest). It was very brief, and refreshing the page always seemed to work to log me back in, so maybe it was a freak thing
running fine for me, but then, i'm running it in IE, not Opera. (nothing loads right in opera anymore due to sheer amount of tabs =__=; )
I haven't noticed any slowness either, though maybe I don't pay enough attention. Sure hope it's just from time to time if it's slow for some, don't want another server move. >.<
I've only been logged in for a few minutes, but it seems like it's been running okay so far. I haven't noticed a lag in loading pages / posting replies like I did yesterday. :)
It's moving smoother today, so maybe it was just a random thing?
It was running fine, but today it slowed down again, to the point where I frequently get timeout/connection reset errors when trying to post replies or wiki pages...
So it's not just me. I just assumed it was slow because I was loading a video on another tab :\
Hmm, while it is not what I would call 'lickedy-split," I have not encountered any significant problems with load times. My connection's longest delay occurs at some server off in San Jose, but at worst it adds 190ms, so...
i had it fail to load a page either last night or today. but only once, it's fine for me.
EDIT: scratch that, it just failed to load again. >>;
It seems normal again. : /
Seems to be working fine here; it was only doing it this afternoon
it could be the crappy bus connection i'm on, but the forum is displaying in times new roman. not much of a nuisance, just odd. :\
not sure if this goes here, but i've noticed the search function here is less than good. i just searched for a post i KNOW i made (it was one word, i put in the entire word, exact same spelling) and it got nothing. i've noticed that when i search for more generic terms in search of a particular post, that post doesn't come up, despite my KNOWING it's on here somewhere.
it's like it only searches what it feels like. selective search. :\
The site's search feature is honestly kind of shitty. I generally have to fight with it to find posts I know I made :\
I can agree with this. In particular, the search function only displays the FIRST time the term is used in a thread, which makes things rather difficult if you're looking for a specific post on a popular subject.
This probably deserves its own thread, though.
should i make one? frankly it feels like we're better off without the search function, cause it's like we don't have one anyway. >>;
When it didn't turn out any results, were you using the quicksearch in the topright corner? If yes, the reason is probably that by default the search wants to bring you a thread and not a single post. Try entering the advanced search and ticking "show results as posts".
thanks for the advice, man. ^^
Gee, I'm sorry to bump older topics but half the time when I try to look at peoples replies to my posts, I get:
An error has occurred! The server is currently under high stress blah blah blah.
What's up with that? My internet is fine so... I'm at a loss here.
this site is hosted on a server that hosts 3 or 4 other sites, so there could be a high volume of traffic on one of the other sites. :\
Correct. If I'm not mistaken, this site is traffic-wise the busiest of the bunch, but lately we've been doing a bit of uploading elsewhere, which can reflect here. It's not of permanent nature, however.
line busy? call again later. it won't even cost you a dime. -w-
This would nearly fit into the Weird Dreams thread, but actually I woke up in the middle of last night and realised what I posted just above didn't make any sense. I was speaking about uploading while the uploading took place completely elsewhere. This site is indeed on a shared server but not with any of our other sites, so of course I don't know if there's upload going on on the other sites here. ^^;
Don't know what I was on when posting that above last night, sorry. ~.~;
I just keep track by thread page number
I was wondering what you meant ^^;;
Thanks for the clarification
tbh i get the feeling most of us didn't know the difference. i know i didn't. :\
is anyone else having trouble with the site today? it's become a chore to load a single page, and it times out every time i try to post. (if this manages to make it through i'll consider it a miracle.)
No issues on my end, amazingly enough
it seems to have cleared up, thankfully. maybe it was something on my network, though i've been getting 5 bars all day. :\
No issues for me either, it's possibly a local issue indeed. Or you were unlucky with some lag spike. Several times. ^^;
if it happens again i'll let you know. :\
OSC is glitching hard for me today. ><;;
i've lost count of the 500 internal server errors i've gotten. if it helps diagnose any, it's all been around the PM system. is it under construction or something? :\
(also, just learned that there's a 20-pm-per-hour limit. wtf?)
The PM limit is certainly one of the forum's default anti-spam measures. ^^; I'd like to defend it saying that usually it's more common for an advertiser to want to send PMs more than once every three minutes for an hour than it is for another user.
edit: Hopped it up to, say, 30.
WHOO! PEOPLE DO LISTEN!!!
I keep getting 403 errors at random today. I assume it's something involving one of the other sites on this server, but I figured I'd bring up just in case
Received one earlier last week as well. Couldn't determine the reason (or didn't really look into it), however, as it lasted for less than 30 seconds.
I don't know if anyone else has had this problem but I cannot view a select group of posts,
you know like "view posts from" I've had this problem for a while now and was just wondering if anyone else had noticed
You mean like the "view posts from [user]" feature? I think it's an issue related to the server; as it always gives an error saying "Due to high traffic, the search feature is disabled"
i think it's likely closer to a permissions issue for him. did you accidentally list yourself as under 18 when you signed up, cause that can screw things up sometimes. :\
no, it worked a while before and I didn't have a problem until recently
Edit: Never mind, it's back.
2Edit: I just cannot view mine
As Pentium guessed, it's a server load issue.
The only issue I've been having recently is with forum searches. Every time I try to run a search, I get this error message:
"Due to high stress on the server, the search function has been automatically and temporarily disabled. Please try again in a short while."
Everything else seems okay though.
basically any time i try to search for stuff i get that error. one of the other sites on the server must be popular. :0
It's very present and hampering the forum searches / listing users' posts, indeed. The hardware resources in shared hosting are rather limited.
just out of curiosity, which site is the one that's hampering everything? :0
That I cannot know. Shared hosting means that the hosting company is keeping OSC on the same server with some of its other client websites. The client sites don't communicate one with another and are not visibly connected.
When we had a dedicated server (i.e. an entire server for OSC and our other sites) back in time, none of the sites ever attracted enough traffic to slow down the others. It's perfectly possible that in the current setting none of the sites on the shared hosting are enough to slow down the whole on their own either, but that the server is simply overburdened by the sum of everything put together.
ahhh, alright. the more you know~
Less than one year ago, Ostan was moved from one of my dedicated servers to a shared one (that i don't control as much, therefore), since i judged it unsecure enough to be a security hole for the server - we already discussed that back in time. Shall the forum be upgraded to some newer engine, the gallery too (ESPECIALLY the gallery), with a bit of secure connexion on the top, and i can put it back on one dedicated. I already know i'm going to have more whining than thanks, so i leave it like that :)
Hi Fedora-tan, how are you?
No? OK, lol.
The main issue would be getting a replacement gallery engine, if I'm correct?
Wouldn't it be possible to use a Booru-style engine for that?
i STILL have a new flash for the gallery.... >>;
oi oi! i was just on opera and the forum was giving me "url not found on this server" errors, and then this happened!
wtf is going on!? o__o
I experienced it briefly too. Server issues. ~.~
as long as people are aware. .__.;
So, I just wanted to thank our lovely and benevolent administrators because their most recent tinkering has finally solved my forum-logs-me-out-every-time issue. Thanks!
I'm afraid you just rolled a critical success in a luck test, stew. I don't think anything Fedora-Tan or I have been doing lately could bring such an improvement. ^^;;
That said, I hope it stays like that and your issue is permanently gone.
Woo! That works just as well as far as I'm concerned, and it is so far.
The server will be changed in october, therefore the matter to know if it's slow or not doesn't really matter anymore now :)
