I'd like to know what is your internet speed, so i'll can adjust the site content accordingly.
I ask about the usual speed, when you browse the site.
Thanks :)

(20Mb myself)

(see C-Chan ? i can ALSO post here :D )
I've posted the theoretical speed.
I... it varies. To be honest, I have no idea what it is right now... Wireless connection has confused me a little: there seem to be fewer chances to see what the heck is going on... Hmmm
In doubt, please test with http://www.speedtest.net
Added after 1 minutes:
It's just to have a global idea anyway, with 1MB and more, i consider you got a fast line myself.
"Problem" is people with 56 and less. If there are too many of those i'll make some alternate templates for them. (problem is a way to speak... didn't find better atm - don't take it bad :p )
Heh, cheers Fedora-Tan. Score: 1.6Mb download - not being ripped off as much as I suspected! Not so happy with the 0.2Mb upload but meh, that's always much less than the download speed, obviously.
I have 1Mb in upload (yes, with 20Mb download that's what i call asynchronous ^^; )
Theorically. With that site it only shows 0.85Mb, which is not that bad.
If i could have "just" 5Mb download and 5Mb upload, i'd prefer honnestly.
Woah, that's a serious internet connection there...
Still, with your 1:20 upload/download ratio, my 1:8 ratio doesn't seem so unbalanced.
Quote from: "Fedora-Tan"If i could have "just" 5Mb download and 5Mb upload, i'd prefer honnestly.
'Just' 5Mb each way, eh? An upload 'just' 3x what I have for download. ;012
Nah, seriously, I gecha. It's like you said about OSs; it's gotta match what you need. I don't need 5Mb, you probably couldn't get by on much less.
Mine's pretty mediocre, 1.5Mbit both ways. SHDSL connection. (I'm not paying the bill, so that's why I hang on to it for now.) But a faster connection isn't something I'd turn down of course. Guess I gotta get around to it soon.
My connection depends on where I am. If the speed drops below 1mbps then I'm probably in Zinjiang or some other armpit location and won't be checking os-tan collections, anyways.
I got a 1mb connection but i need a wireless card that's not from a B-stock brand XD (getting an Asus wireless adapter soon)
My connection is ridiculous: 1 Mb download and 128 Kb upload, ADSL.
Which brings me to the underlying question : is the site / forum / etc... slow or not for you ?
4859 download
380 upload

seems pretty fast for me :D
I have 3MB Download (ADSL), and don't know about upload... but there is no 2-5 MB option! I can't select!
Poll edited, you should fit into the >2 and <= 10Mb category ^_^
/me awaits the one who'll have a 15Mb line, just to bother me since there's still a hole in the poll here ;shino;
Thank you! ;173
Quote from: "Fedora-Tan"Which brings me to the underlying question : is the site / forum / etc... slow or not for you ?
Site's never been slow for me, unless I'm leeching torrents like a madman. (But then it would be my fault. :p )
3MB, not slow. ^__^
(Was on 56K up until a few months ago... but still wasn't slow, btw)
Mine about 3MB up and Down, so the site is never slow. At least for me.
Theoretically mine's a 100 mbps connection... in practice, due to congestion (since mine's a cellphone network-based internet connection), average speed is around 20-30 mbps.
Site's never been slow though.
i'm so envious of everyone's speed..... :(
i'm at the lower half of the speed chain... :(
oh well..
1Mb/512kb ADSL connection here. The site works like a dream, faster than most other I ever visit. ^^
Mine was 256k/128k. My ISP is shared speed. So it could be slower if a lot of people use at the same time. And after THAT earthquake in Taiwan, browsing speed for int'l sites was decreased. But It's ok when I browse here. ^ ^
1.2 MB down, 0.5 MB up....
it's a pain when dl'ing large torrents, but there's no problem visiting this site
u guys try ur Uni/college/school speed there very fast 9000MB+ on upload speed not sure abt download.
the comp i'm on now is 512kb DL, 54kb UL
ISDN connection 64000 or 128000 baud depending if I connect with single or both channels.
I see OS-TAN Connection site without problems even if using only one single channel. ;010 :smoke:
lol to could be faster did get to it limited on the upload, it was still go up then there was nothing to upload and it still was goin up
Added after 13 minutes:
lol ok gettting faster but still not testing the upload speed
Added after 22 minutes:
the speed just went up to 33118 on download but the upload slow getting bigger

Mine's supposed to be 100 down, 10 up, but i think something's wrong with my network since it's only 10/10 practically. Oh well...
100 Kbps? Even then, those are some weird ratios

Not 100 kpbs. 100 Mbps. And...to be honest, that's just overkill for a single personal computer.
16 bits per fortnight ;006 ;263

My ISP told me my internet speed is 2M but i can only download things with the speed of about 25K>_<
I enter to internet at 46k modem (and, sometimes, at University free Wireless conection). Yes, 46k. My connection's like a stream web machine. u_u
*sigh*
Mine is 56k or less...
I wonder if I can get more faster connection
i used to have at least 10mbps but now i only have 128kb or less. which is kinda slow fer me T-T
I have 8mb broad band for many downloads and still too slow for me.
My download speed is 1319 kbps, and upload is 325. That's from NY server, the closest.
(just for fun)
From the farthest server [in the region], Vancouver, it's 1317 over 321. Not much difference. I have DSL, so it's cool here. ^.^;;
upload 230
download 1937
Bluesummers, captain...hope i'm not rude or anything but...
1319/325!? 1937/230!? What the hell kind of ratios are those? Is it physically possible for them to even exist!? >,>
Or is it just me being totally unknowing of the (?) fact that the states has totally screwed up bitrates for intarweb connections? ;013

hey i just post what the test tells me.
Hm? What test? Show!
Quote from: "Fedora-tan"In doubt, please test with http://www.speedtest.net
It's on the first page...
Ah, that one. It gave me some 9601 down and 2600 down, but that's bullshit since I - when using DC - have both uploads and downloads as high as 1.2 megabytes per second. So the speedtest is a liar. You fail, speedtest.
(http://www.speedtest.net/result/97835989.png) (http://www.speedtest.net)
There's no such thing as a 10 Mb connection in Mexico...;_;
But meh, 1.5mb works for me. Better than 56kb =P
QuoteI - when using DC - have both uploads and downloads as high as 1.2 megabytes per second. So the speedtest is a liar.
Have you considered the converse, perhaps DC is lying? Besides, the test is for
average speed, not absolute maximum.
Im sooo Lucky...Meh gots T1 ^^
Lying DC is impossible, since that would mean it is downloading/uploading files slower than indicated. Which is a LIE since i know for sure that i can open avis the second after they're dl-d, for an example. So DC lying is a no-no. My DC-tan does not lie!!!
lol I am in Iraq with a crapy connection, however it's the middle of the day on my day off so there probly arnt but a few people on atm. I will have to try this out in the evening for a good laugh but atleast atm the net is running alright with.
859 ms latency
1149 ks/s down
15 kb/s up
when i test again at about 6-7pm tonight I would will bet just about anything that my speeds get mesured in the bytes per second =)
over all from what I can tell of this site it does seem to run at fairly reasonable speeds, the larger pictures that people place in there sigs give me problems but I am used to that by now.
Well, in that case I would recommend to switch off images and load only selected ones. Every browser can do something like that.
for Konqueror it's under 'Web behaviour' and for FF in preferences.
aye, I am famular with how to turn off image loading but to be honist I prefer images to be on , I will simply deal with the litle red x's that I end up seeing on occation =)
Plus, unless things have changed, the KBR computer centers dont have FF Loaded.. hell they usualy dont even have the major IM programs installed. And even if they did, messing with settings is a no-no
hehe thankfully we arnt stuck using the MWR computers we have internet in our CHU's. It's a bit expensive considering what we are getting, however I would rather pay for crapy internet rather than go and use the MWR computers which are missing keys and have strict time limits
you forgot to mention the fact that most of them are being used by contractors or fobbits...
DL Speed: 5 Mbps (700kb/sec)
UL Speed: 346 kbps (45kb/sec)
Very uneven. :\
I'm not really sure, but I get dl speeds of about 150-210kbs
That gives you (probably) a con speed of some 2-3 mbps...i think.
I'm using WiFi...right now It's 18 MBPS.
Depending on the location of the hub I am trying to connect via Cable, roughly 1-2 megs.
At work low end business DSL.
At home on the other hand, a nice cable connection.
depend... mine is 100mbps during at home while 10mbps in college
Ara! Welcome to the 100mbit-club, Acher-san!
Grr. I curse thee spoiled people-with-fast-internet-connection!
Having a fast connection isn't all fun and games, though. ^.^; Faster connections means that spyware and all the above have faster access, too. Of course, that's less of a risk with the right anit-spyware programs and such, but hey. It can be a downright pain at times. >.> And trust me, I've been there way more times than I care to admit...
Okay, I must apologize in advance, but this one is too good to pass up!
Spyware?
Switch to Linux! ^___^
Or Macintosh! (My personal favorite) Much less hassle, and you pretty much have to try to get viruses!
Okay, there's my plug for M$ alternatives!
Yeah, I sorta came to that conclusion the other day when I had one of my friends sware up and down about how much better than my desktop. I just grinned and bore it. As much as switching my OS would seem great and alleviate me of that problem, I'm still just a Windows guy at heart. ^^; That's like an invitation for disaster, isn't it?
Anyway, still. I love my download speed. Downloaded that Mugen game off the downloads in a matter of minutes.
What's it at?
About 1.5 MBs downloading and 512 KBs uploading
My connections is only:
DOWNload 180kbps
UPload 60kbps
But it´s enough for gaming and browsing!

Its supposed to be 10Mbps at the moment but its getting upgraded to 20Mbps soon.
Dial-up... Whatever speed my dial-up internet is. -_-;
oh dear... using dialup is like using carrier pigeons... at least in terms of speed...
11.0 MBps (WiFi)....If the WiFi's working XD

My dad's computer in the front room.
It usually bottoms out at 5mbps-10mbps depending on time of day, and spikes on the odd day.
Why do these things spike, anyway? I mean, me living in the second-most high-bandwidth country of the world might not be in the same situation, but I've never heard of anything like it around here. Nandeyanen!?
I seem to get spiking too. It seems to happen when there's less people in my neighborhood using the internet. (like when they're having a party a couple houses over) My connection is usually around 10-12 mbps.

Whats my internet speed? Not fast enough! Thats what it is, cause the net can never be fast enough :P
Got about 1700 K downspeed and 466k up but thats because im on a cheapo internet connection (Cable).
But if I open DC my browsing completely goes to hell... Doesn't show on the speedtest though...strange
Unfortunately, I'm stuck in the stone age with good ol' 56k. ._.;
One of these centuries I'll get cable. So far it seems like this site is still pretty speedy, even for someone as slow as me. I just have to wait several minutes if it's a picture thread, but I'm generally doing more than one thing anyway on the computer...
Glorious 100Mbit/s. Oh how I love you.
Since WhoIs.com told me that ostan-collections.net points to a French server, I also tried some French speedtests, yielding anything from 200 to 700 kbit/s, depending on which test I took.
I'll redo the test later this month after I use up my monthly download quota - I get capped at 64/64 kbit/s after 6 GB of download.
It said i am going around 520k.

Advertised as being 7Mbit/sec down, 512Kbit/sec up, so they're close to meeting what they promise.
Oh, and the site loads blazingly fast for me.
I think mine is a 512k.
I tried that speed test on the first page. I tried areas in the US, and got around 700-800kb in downloading. Then I tried the Philippines and got 462kb.
MY SWEDISH BROADBAND SPEEDS DWARF YE ALL, SUCKERS! ;006
Hughesnet home basic is rated at 768kb/s down 128kb/s up, actual transfer normally tops out around 150kb/s download.
Though I get cut off if I download more than 200MB every 24 hours, which totally sucks. Thank god I can use the college network.
Wtf is up with bandwidth limitations anyway? There isn't even such a thing around here.
Basically it means your ISP is too cheap to upgrade their infastructure to actually provide the service they are selling you, so you get a nice bang on the draw for a little while and then they cut you off. Their reason being that a minority of their customers make up the majority of the usage on their networks.
I say as long as the routing access permissions are set the same at their end, it doesn't matter how much I use I still have to share it equally with all other users of their network. Meaning that their 'claim' is utter bull, they just don't want me to be able to get my money's worth out of it nor do they want to upgrade their systems to actually provide the bandwidth they promise for an extended period of time.
wow, i can only dream of a 10Mb broadband!
I get anywhere from 6mb to about 10mb

My speeds are by far not the fastest, but still plenty acceptable. Meanwhile a few weeks back, I had to suffer through dismally slow connections of 7 KB/sec and download speeds of 1 KB/sec! x__x
My download speed is 1mb
upload speed 384 kbps.
;_; I want 20 mbps download speed.
Its gotten worse now... :P
download speed is less than 200kb, while upload speed is 150++kb
I'm on 56K, though the site isn't too slow (It's certainly faster than loading a video on YouTube over this connection)

o_o
if i did that then, i'd guess i'd get a much slower reading than that... Even though our school had a 40-50Mbit SDSL connection...
IT-students tend to hog the bandwith with online gaming and downloading :P
The slowest connection, that'll be me 153kbps at max with cdma mobile modem..... ;063
well, there should still, be 56k6 modem users around here, i saw them posting around here somewhere...
DAAAANG!! Some of you have insanely fast connections! I envy you!
heh, tekes me back to the days when i was the only one i knew who had a 128k ISDN connection.... :D
I have a one Mb connection,
I really cannot afford something faster.
Well 1Mb is fast enough for general surfing, and even DLing, i even managed to play online games on a (well a bit faster) 2Mb connection...
20Mb or 10Mb is just an unneccesary luxury for most people...
European bandwidth is really wide.....
how much it cost for a month?
in my country, to get 1Mb bandwidth with isdn connection, you need about $1000 a month?
such a huge money! ;014

I must have crappy internet.
Stupid Charter Communications.
Quote from: "randi.ninja"European bandwidth is really wide.....

It's about â,¬50,- (~$65) a month, including digital television and telephone connection...
But a 2-4Mb/s starts from â,¬10-â,¬20,- (~$13-$26) a month...
And Cockleshell i don't think that's a "crappy" connection, 4Mb/s is good...
QuoteI must have crappy internet.
Stupid Charter Communications.
Keep in mind, there are probably quite a few people on OSC at their university, and those connections can be outrageously fast (you'd be surprised what one can afford with gov't grants and all that tuition money;)). Also many people here are probably living in higher residential areas where one often finds much improved options for internet access. All in all, what I'm saying is that many of these people have much more bandwidth than they would probably ever need :P. I'd say 4MB broadband is nothing to sneeze at, the college I used to attend had a much faster connection, but compare 4MB/s to this:
(http://www.speedtest.net/result/404438817.png) (http://www.speedtest.net)
Believe it or not, that's not bad for someone living in a rural area. Even in the U.S., it's pretty uncommon for rural folk to have any form of internet connection outside of dial-up or satellite (eww, expensive
and unreliable, DO NOT WANT). In this case we're talking the base package for an ADSL connection (which is what I still consider the "po' man's internet"), still I'm quite happy with this, beats the piss outta the alternatives here.
btw. Smokey those rates are really impressive, wish something like that was available where I live.
meh, like i said 20Mb/s or higher is only neccesary when you're hosting LAN-parties or are gaming online with, say, 4 or so people...
QuoteEuropean bandwidth is really wide.....

Sweden as a nation has the 2nd or 3rd highest avg bandwidth in the world, but still...
My cousin lives in the middle of nowhere - the ABSOLUTE middle of nowhere, really, I mean it, only wolves around and the nearest house is like 10k away - and they pay some 15$/month for a stable 4down/0,5up connection.
A bit more centralized am I, so I've got a 100/10 connection for some 30$/month.
Sweet life.
mine gets over 2mb im just glad im not on dial up like i used to be when i was in high school.
like OMG you totaly dont want me to put my speed up here it would make me cry >.> <.< GRRR darn wireless!!
:p do it for the lulz! also, why is your wireless so bad? are you leeching?
well ok i look dumb now but its also almost 11pm so not much activity at the moment
(http://www.speedtest.net/result/409373811.png) (http://www.speedtest.net)
oh and no im not leaching i have my own but my laptop kind of sux so some days its ok and some days i just close it and go watch anime or read a book hehehhehehe
like 500kB down and 55kB up... (note: B, not b)
...so...
... not much for bragging rights, I guess... v.v
Mine's actually 15.4Mbps, but there's no option for that so I'll vote 20+.
I'm jealous with you guys...T_T!!
It's really unfair!!
You guys internet tariff relatively cheap compared to mine, i paid $13 and i only got 153Kbps connection with 1GB quota!! UNFAIR!!!!
I'm in despair!!
WTF?! Quota's?! what evil country do you live in?!
i assign 1MB/sec line, but real speed is so... low as 50k modem. damn...
It's decent I suppose, even though I don't actually get speeds this fast on typical downloads.
Most I've gotten on actual downloads is 6MB/s
I get about 2MB/s on average downloads though.
Wow, i never get any higher than ~1Mbit/s on downloads...
Since my only way to gain internet access is to use an portable broadband stick, my bandwith ratio is between 5:2 to 0.1:0 on a bad day =;_;=
Oh, sick!!! man i feel for ya.... but at least you dont have to use your mobile phone as a dial-up modem through a shoddy Irda or RS232 connection giving you just a handful of kb/s, wich should be a bit of a relief... ^_^
My Home Network Center setup has two sets of network connectivity:
The primary line, a 10/1 Roadrunner cable connection. Not much to say about it.
This is my Home Network Center's "backup" line, powered by a spare UM150 modem and a Verizon Wireless 'Daypass' plan when needed in dire emergencies (network outages lasting 6+ hours).

Not the best for gaming, but it gets the job done at times.
Can you believe I pay 61 USD/mo for this speed? -_-
ASDFG
FUCKEN SERIOUSLY
That's overpricing at a HUGE scale, man. My 100/10 broadband costs me less than 30$/mo, and even that is slightly overpriced...DAMN.

I absolutely hate broadband, cable all the way!
Cables strangle you.
Broadband is wide enough to just wrap you up like an enormous pink ribbon, and just like it make you feel very, very fabulous. <3

As I said on the runes of magic forums:
QuoteSadly, AT&T DSL did nothing but screw me over when I had them. Always disconnected at 1-2 in the morning, constantly had the router blinking red light throughout the day (sometimes it connected, other times it didn't.) And whenever someone called or if someone called from my place to another place, the connection would usually drop. Tried to get support for the issues, but they always seemed to resolve it, but it always came back the next few days.
I've boycotted DSL ever since.
not to mention, I had to pay about 30 USD a month for crappy 1 mbps service
I have one adsl @ 2mbps, one 3g card @ 3.5mbps and a cable conection @ 1mbps, nothing above the average.
2.5 Mbit DSL line, it's ok, I guess, I don't download things very often.
time warner here, 3mb down, 12 mb up. Highest available residential speeds.
Download: 1mbit/s
Upload: 192kbit/s
Up until yesterday, I had 512/65 connexion, but now... I am not surfing, but flying through the net. Of course, that will last for a few days, than it'll feel slow again... You can't satisfy the need 4 speed...
Why do I feel so ashamed of myself when I think 10mbit/10mbit is slow?
I think I know now.
;W;
Ah, we (the dutch) will be getting 120Mbit/s soon (end of the year bandwidth is upped to 50Mbit/s and beginning next year it will GOTO 120 and beyond)... But that's broadband cable, i always thought ADSL would explode bandwidth-wise...
Apparently you vas in teh vrong.
Although it's true we DO have 50mbit ADSL over here...
Aw, fuck. I can't listen to that. It's to impossible! *covers ears* ;100
ALL YOUR BANDWIDTH ARE BELONG TO US.
Added after 1 minutes:
Speaking of which, in the student apartment I'll be living, I'll be paying 150 SEK (which is approx 20$) a month for 100/10 broadband...
CHEAP SHEEP SAYS CHEEEEEEEP!
Omg, my net costs $ 25 a month. T_T
Ya, I know. Compared to pretty much every other nation in the world except maybe japan, Swedish internet both speeds and prices are RIDICULOUSLY good.
Why don't do I live in Sweden...

hi,
when i check my speed using http://www.ip-details.com/internet-speed-test/ it comes to around 3Mbps
I have upgraded...
My internet. Is so good.
I use a T-2 line... Erm... 5 of them. Six or seven. They go through my 9600bps external US Robotics modem.
Well, currently using a hotel connection, which is giving me a good 5.56 mb/s
Unfortunately, once I get back home, it's going to be somewhere around .6 or .7 cause the US government hates me.

BTW, Taking a small look around and i see I PWN YOU ALL WITH MY AWESOME UPLOAD!!!!!!
UPLOAD higher than DOWNLOAD? Dude, no way!
Welcome to the Dutch armed forces... :D
i get about 3MB/S
the highest i could get here 4mb, but i it was way too expensive, so i take the 1mb's package
the highest download speed i could get when downloading file from megaupload is around 170kb/s, pretty nice as it only takes around 30 minutes or less to download a 100mb file...
Current setup. Well, it's good enough, I suppose...but not as good as 100/10 <3
I have a 200 KBps down speed, about 1.5 Mbps, which is less than I had before, but I'm not complaining, still gets me what I want.
about 10mb down 1 mb up. cable from TW
On summer i have about 80mbps down and 60 mbps up, now with the snow and cold it's down at 8 mbps down and 7.4 up (it's -20 celsius here)
Ooh, temperature-variables...I know how that feels now -.-; Why do things have to break so easily when buried in 2 meters of snow? Seriously. -.-
Exactly, i lost internet connection twice this winter cuz cables froze and rest of the time the internet is very slow. Summer! I summon you! >=O
Nope, too bad. He's still serving his penalty for screwing around and being a dick in general, as well as annoying me personally. Winter, on the other hand, is faithful as long as nobody stands in the way...and surprisingly easy to bond, as well.

Oh, what's my uplink supposed to be, then? Is there even one fast enough to account for it? I never even watched star trek to begin with, but the damn Warp Factors would stop being countable at these damn speeds.

I've been meaning to ask my provider why the upload is so pathetic in comparison to the download, my iPhone has a faster upload speed. Though I have so many computers that this might be skewed. Since supposedly we have a 15 mb/s download speed.
@Nejin; I think yours qualifies as Transwarp :D

Uploading stuff to youtube is long and painful here.
Good thing my OS-Tan is a master compressor!
lol. xD only things i upload is the occasional file to myself and pics to the gallery (or to my photobucket).
I took a video of a match I had in a game with friends. It took an HOUR to upload and then youtube told me it was too long.
Dang you, youtube!
:\ i think that's one of the reasons i'd dread uploading to youtube, if i did. if i was to make a movie, i'd have to break it into parts. >.<;
On a completely random note, I was starting a STAR DRIVER ep dl just now. As I watched the speed rise to the skies in a matter of seconds (and spouted, "Downloading at motherfucken lightspeed!") I realized that the speed is the same, really - it's ALWAYS lightspeed, as long as you're using fibre optics, and in copper cable it's the speed of that. So "Internet Speed" is either an euphemism for some sort of drug, or a misinterpretation of bandwidth-related terms. If anything, "transfer rate" should be more proper.
Eeeeeeeeeeeeeh.
i barely understood that. :3

It's a wireless connection using Motorola Canopy equipment to an access point on a tower quite a ways away
I ping roughly 25 in Quakeworld on the TX server, while everyone else gets 60+
But my packet loss is always around 1-3% on anything

No; I have (really crappy) DSL. It's faster than my old dial-up connection, at least, but it's still too slow when you try to watch videos (Anything streaming, like Netflix, is a test of patience), and unfortunately, it's the fastest speed offered in my area short of cable internet. I'm pretty sure my internet connection really hates me

hot 2k-tan on 2k-tan action! If I was better at drawling, that would make for an interesting yuri fanart...
SOMEONE, FANART, NOW! (i'm busy. :3)
Here's my connection on the guest Wifi at work. I wish mine at home was more like this
(http://www.speedtest.net/result/1290156180.png)
still not golden, dude >.>;
It's not as awesome as my sister's connection, but it's still better than what I have at home; even though it's through the same provider
your sister has her own place? try testing the connection and then posting it here. :3
When I head over this weekend, I'll test it. She has the 2nd fastest cable internet service in town; which, since she can stream an entire episode of Ouran High School Host Club while I'm playing MapleStory without any lag on either one, it has to be a pretty good connection
damn. .__.;
I know; I wish I could talk my parents into switching, but since it took me ages to get them to switch from dial-up to DSL, I doubt they'd want to switch to cable internet just yet.
(As a note, it took me a good 5 years to talk them into DSL; from a span of when TechTV's The Screen Savers was still on the air until about 6 months after I went absent from this site due to major stability problems with my dial-up connection combined with having to share a desktop with my parents again because my sister took away her laptop)
well, at least you have access now. there was a period of time when i was younger when i didn't have internet at home (no one wanted to pay for it).
Generally, talking my mom into any kind of upgrade is a near-impossible task; although in recent years, as I've proven that I know what I'm doing, she's become more willing to let me do upgrades.
I remember that talking her into upgrading from a 33.6K modem to a 56K modem was a pain; which, when I finally did convince her to let me try, that botched upgrade started the chain of events that lead to the purchase of Crappy (A PC loaded with with tons of bloatware, had little RAM, tons of driver conflicts, and was an overall mess...but it did lead me to discovering Chip's Challenge; which was a plus).
why is it hard to convince her? it's hard to convince my dad because he 'thinks' he knows everything there is to know about comptuers and such.
With hardware upgrades and the like, that's because she though I was going to mess something up; the failed upgrade to a 56K modem didn't help much. However, shortly after Frankenstein Classic was built, she began to lighten up; letting me handle a lot more than I used to be able to.
With the upgrade to DSL, it's because she claimed 56K was faster; after experiencing DSL for the first time on my grandma's desktop, which could barely handle Windows as it was, let alone internet
it's not right to judge assumptions based on poor experiences alone. :\
I know; she did the same thing with Internet Explorer 4, when the first time she used it was on a PC my uncle had screwed around with the setting on, which made the scrollbar on the side disappear. As a result, we kept using version 3 for years until she made the upgrade to version 5
EDIT: Since my sister is in the process of moving, I couldn't test her connection this weekend. A shame, because I was looking forward to showing off how awesome it is.
Instead, here's what my connection is like from a wired connection (via 2k-tan the Desktop. The previous one I took of my home connection was over Wifi, using Asagi). It's a tiny bit faster, although not by much
(http://www.speedtest.net/result/1297195555.png) (http://www.speedtest.net)
like, .02 points faster. xD
is she going to have the same connection speed in her new place?
oh, and IE's somewhat lack of stability is what made me switch to opera (plus i like the features better :3).
@Choco: Yeah, she'll have the same connection. I plan on heading over this Saturday, so I can test it out and show off how awesome it is
Also, I used Internet Explorer for years since the version of Netscape we also had was starting to become as outdated as IE3 was. Then, I switched to Mozilla in '04, and once that became too outdated to use, I finally made the jump to Firefox and began regularly following it's releases.
mozilla was a browser?
and lol, i haven't thought of netscape in years. xD

@Choco: Yeah, Mozilla was it's own browser (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mozilla_Application_Suite) at one time; based heavily on Netscape 4. It was retired once Firefox took off, although one group revived the original Mozilla as SeaMonkey
Also, where exactly is Basel? Obviously, it must be out-of-the-way and with a connection barely better than what I get at work
hee. Basel, Switzerland is where my dad grew up. it's a big city. :3

@Choco: If you're moving, than take me with you? (Probably won't happen that easily since you'd have to take a detour to get me, but hey; I can dream about escaping from this tiny town, can't I?)
Anyway, here's what my sister's connection is like; testing from what is physically the closest server:
(http://www.speedtest.net/result/1306106326.png) (http://www.speedtest.net)
...And again from what it says is closer to her house (Which it isn't; she lives less than 5 miles from where I do, which is nowhere close to Memphis):

either way, faster than your connection. :3
Yeah; I'd love to have a home connection like that...
i'd hate to live where you are. my connection's slow enough as it is. >__<;
8MB/s is slow? I'd love to have a connection like that, and I'm pretty sure my desktop would love one that fast as well (Especially when I buy something off Steam; downloading Portal 2 was a test of patience)
i say "slow" because it's constantly DCing. :\
I don't have too many D\C problems, surprisingly; the main problems I had with that was with my old, dieing Wireless-B router I replaced a few months ago
:\
speed means nothing when it cuts constantly. ><;
It sometimes cuts on me, but usually it happens when my connection gives up because there's just too much for it to take in; as my parents and I learned when they where watching a streaming video on Netflix while I was watching the latest episode of Linkara's History of Power Rangers
:\ sounds like it sucks.
but yours sounds more reliable than mine, still. last week it cut and didn't come back for an hour. ><;
The only time my provider did something like that was roughly a year ago; when something happened that knocked out the internet access for close to a week all across town. That week sucked...
sounds like it, man. ><;

Wait, so THAT's why i got the lagspike in the middle of game? >:[
i guess so ><;
For the fun of it, I decided to test my grandma's internet connection at her office (She pays for the business package, while my mom went with the home package). I'm not expecting much...

Holy shit! I didn't think internet speeds that fast could possibly exist in this town, outside of cable internet

Cheetah's speed for those wondering.

Tiger's speed as well. I think having an original Apple airport card is what made her edge out Cheetah in speed and have ping similar to Mac's.
Sorry, Gaming computer, even a 12' G4 Powerbook can out-web you.
Neither Sonata nor Antares can take the test.

not bad.
(also, bella, i guess i'm the first. :3)
I tried to test it, but Frankenstein V3 has issues with how heavy the site is. Besides, I think it was proven a long time ago that I have the worst internet connection out of everyone on this site xD

Sorry, I meant second highest DOWNLOAD speed, orz.
I'm only made second by Kraus... his download speeds are insanely fast, if they're still the same as they were last summer...
ahhh. yeah, that makes sense. though i've had people express envy at my upload speeds (they're wasted on me since i barely upload things ^^; ).
i'm happy with my download speeds. :3
@pentium: cheer up. maybe if you get your own place the speeds will be better. :3 (it reminds me of mel and her dorm; the internet there sucked so bad that she and her roommate bought a router and pay for their own internet. this was great when there was a fire in the basement of the building, knocking out the internet for the entire dorm......except them. -w-)

Well, when I do get out on my own, I'm making sure I include a decent internet connection in the budget. Even if it's just 5Mbps, I'd be satisfied
i assume that's still better than home. :\
Yep. That would be roughly 10x faster than my current connection
Also, this is the only site I take part in an internet speed topic. On every other site, the elitists keep me from even considering it; as they usually make fun of those with speeds lower than 50Mbps
In other words, they'd make fun of 100% of the users on this site, from what I can gather in this topic
which is why i don't hang around other sites much. :\
I'm supposed to get 55 MBPs
we all see that I do.

apparently my car has satellite internet, but the heck if I know where it is.
nice. though i'm willing to bet that 95% of vehicles (not counting trains/planes/etc) don't have internet. :3
doublepostlolwut:
this is what public wifi on a coach bus (a nice one) looks like:
(http://www.speedtest.net/result/1743578388.png) (http://www.speedtest.net)
i think one of the reasons it's so wonky (besides the fact that it's public and that multiple people are using it) is that it's roving wifi. since it's moving instead of a landline, i think that would affect the speed. :\
It's like my connection, but with the upload and download inverted!
so you're using satellite internet too? cause i'm pretty sure that's how the bus works. :\
Nope; DSL.
In our area, the only provider for satellite internet is like $150+ a month for speeds equal to our $15 a month DSL connection. Which, they now offer faster speeds in our area...but I doubt I'd be able to talk mom into paying the extra $10 a month for a connection twice as fast, even if it means Netflix would load faster :/

Stew, why is your upload higher than your download? Derpy at the networks agency?
....mine, Red. That's from the same connection, I was calling bullshit on how much the connection here fluctuates and the bizarre upload vs. download speed.
So THAT'S how you can upload and post 20+ images on a regular basis....

HOLY CONSISTENT SPEEDS BATMAN!
You'd actually get better speeds if you used a server closer to you.
Not true. I get the best speeds from either Portland or Boston, both of which are ~100mi away.
Besides, there aren't any servers nearby ... living out in the sticks and all.
(http://www.speedtest.net/result/1745465583.png) (http://www.speedtest.net)
seems kinda average. :\
Herndon is the closest to me.
Dallas is the closest to me. I'll test later, in case maybe I have a 0.01Mbps improvement or something :/
manchester is closest to me, though boston isn't much farther.
I have 2 servers shamefully close - Stockholm main, which is about 30km from here (so 20 miles ish?); and Solna, which is technically a suburb or something, and is a bit shorter than that, so maybe 15 miles.

yes my internet is best and cool
That's an amazing upload rate.
I only get 40mbps.
Awwww, I can't answer the poll anymore. My download speed (normally) would be somewhere in 1-6 MB/s though
(if it's speedtesting and stuff, then mine would be 13-20 Mbps or so for both downloading and uploading. That's national servers though, not international ones (what I meant is servers outside my country), so I don't know)

its quite unstable though and it often goes down to like 5 mbps

Not the best, but it's not quite as unbearable
Hard to believe how far I've come connection wise, when that used to be the best I had access to. This is what we have at home now, after finally convincing the parents to move away from DSL:

Remember when DSL used to be considered fast? No, I don't want to, either.

this feels.....generous. the internet here is hot garbage. to be fair, it's shortly after midnight, so no one else is using it, i think. (me having oceans of tabs open doesn't help, either.)
