Are our mods being lenient, or just missing stuff?
Anyways, someone rid us of this guy. Four posts, two of each "Call for Papers" shit. Aurora, Tsubashi, someone. Anyways.

Bring us the hammer, already, would you? Pleez.
Kill it with fire.
Oh Admins, where art thou!
Action taken! I deleted three of those four threads, letting one remain to let the author know although his/her posts were for a good cause, this forum is not a proper place to put it as it is completely irrelevant to us (besides, none of us would be able to participate)! I warned that he/she should post it in a much more suitable place, that is... I decided to let him/her off with a warning this time. Bans should only be used for the worst of offenders.
Good call and thanks for the swift justice, Aurora-dono! ^^
Thank you Aurora-dono, you fill your duties well. I'm sorry for not catching those.
I think I accidentally offended Captain-san, and so I'm not sure if she still checks the forums. Gomen nasai. I will try to do a better job in the future
Good job aroura, it seems my faith and trust was well placed. However, I would thusly saggest that the user who has not posted anything relevant to the ostans and seems to be here simply to advertise something else (tho impressivly, NOT porn) be removed and the topic deleted, just as we do for the porn spam bots. If there is a real user behind the posts, they would have posted again by now.
who hates spammer.....?
Don't know if this fits in here but,
a user with the name "cybercuate" is posting 2letter "spam messages" to several threads...
So if anyone reads this message, do check him and do your conclusions.
I say it definitely does. And spotted. Makes me wants to choke a bitch.
Trying to track this guy, but can't find anything else than various spanish shit. I say swat the hammer on him, but that's mainly 'cause I'm pissed.
There also is the possibility of a bot somehow taking over his account, in the case we should permanently delete it; however, how this would work I have little knowledge of - still, his messages don't exactly scream of "sentient" behavior. Well, except that one Spanish post - which is basically all I've been able to deduct that he is.
Also, someone's gotta do SOMETHING about this massive newcomer influx, it's breaking up into chaos! >_< For example there's some guy with his own TWO one-post pseudo-intro-threads...

Yeah, this site really needs some staff remodelling.
So many threads that needs to be deleted and things that needs to be done, still, the staff seems to be too busy with something else.
Hmmm, somehow, this starts to look like the politics over here...
Politics...? Moar liek, DELETICS!!! ;006

Sad story, that. We're next up over here, I guess.
Requesting deletion for this post (http://ostan-collections.net/viewtopic.php?p=54752&sid=3ab1014ea10063a647b0e19f169e2439#54752) and review of user, if necessary b&!.
Is it because of the advertisement to hentai, outside of the hentai section? If so, I will delete that post right away.
Pretty much. Also spam+1-post user=not exactly good stuff.
However the (somewhat) skillful aiming of his post makes me doubt it being an automated poster, and likely it's just some fag creeper hiding in his mom's basement in Korea trying to make some money or something.
But that's what caught my eye, yeah.
(ACTUALLY I KNOW THIS GUY PERSONALLY AND WANT HIM SHOT ON THE SPOT BUT I CANT SO I ASK YOU TO B&! HIM FOR THAT REASON AND YEAH THAT SEEMS REALLY LIKELY DOESN'T IT)
So, you know, I really like free pr0n and all, but I'm pretty sure this (http://ostan-collections.net/fpost-54933.html) violates forum rules.
And I'm pretty sure the poster (http://ostan-collections.net/profile.php?mode=viewprofile&u=2636) is a bot. When I read the bottom of the post I almost mistook it for a lost Hongfire user, ha.
No doubt now, indeed; ratings aren't OSC, so he's undoubtedly automated (or just very stupid), and besides, breaking the rules that Cappy so much tried to beat into my head once upon a time. ^^
MAY WE ASK FOR THE HAMMERTIME?
*Granted* but---
Wait, wrong thread. ^__^
User and Post have been deleted. Thank you for the report since, as a general rule, as I make it a point to avoid that area excepting a valid reason. ^^'
As do I, Tsubashi, but I thought that since that very user had been acting suspiciously before, things had to be checked up. ^^

Breaking character, I must explain that these are attempted duplicate threads (one is empty for some reason) linking to pirated pr0n. It seems obvious to me that the poster (third link) is a bot.
Thank you for alerting me; the proper action has been taken. I'm sorry I am unable to catch these things, but firstly, I don't think I'd keep my job very long if I was poking through that area and secondly, that area scares me anyway ^^'
Gomen nasai
I think it's obvious we'll be needing someone on patrol in that area in order to cope with the spam/bots.
Thus it would seem. Makes one realize just how much Captain-sama actually did, ne? ^^'
Well, a quick glance at the hentai request thread indicates that our beloved Captain-sama has made a rare appearance. Let's hope she stays awhile.
Umu, I saw that too. Seems a bit brief, however, and I haven't been seeing her online on MSN either recently; I dunno.
I've seen her on MSN, but I think her life is just a bit busy. ^.^
*out of the shadows like a farking ninja*
Amazing how the protected never see need for someone at the gates untill that person is gone...
I might be around, but I dont know for how long or if Ill stay. reguardless, Im not a mod anymore. Patrolling for spam is a moderator job.
fufufu.. suddenly thought thought of our little aroura patrolling in there seemed mighty amusing XD
Anyhow, coming back here is kind of a trial basis thing. Ive been gone from even the internet for a while now short of checking email. We shall see how this ends up.
So you DID resign.
I was the one who deleted those spam threads even though it involved treading in areas I would otherwise dare venture!
But it was to enforce the rules, and bring spammers to justice!
Humm, I cant say I really resigned. I must say I was quite disgruntled, but I never put in an official letter of resignation. However after taking I think about a month break I came back and my name had been removed from the moderators, so I guess I was removed or fired for absence.
Your tag still says "global moderator" however. That's confusing -w-
odd indeed, but my name was taken off where it lists the mods for a board... anyhow the topic is derailing here
I know Nejin-san already mentioned this guy (http://ostan-collections.net/profile.php?mode=viewprofile&u=2520) much earlier in this thread, but has anyone let him know this is the OSC forum yet? He doesn't seem to be a bot, but he sure does like to advertise. If you haven't already, could Aurora or Tsubashi please review and warn this user?
These are his only three posts:
Post 1 (http://ostan-collections.net/post-53666.html#53666) (again)
Posts 2 & 3 (http://ostan-collections.net/viewtopic.php?t=871)
btw. Thanks to Captain-sama for already posting a little heads up to said user.

Didn't these threads exist a few months ago? If so, then they were created again just recently, by the exact same person.
I dropped the hammer and DELETED EVERYTHING!! ;010
Those might be duplicate threads- I vaguely recall seeing their titles on the index page some time ago.
B&hammer on the guy then, perhaps?
or bot. Its pretty obvious its automated. I sent Tsubashi a pm about it. If he managed to log the bots IP he can delete it and block it from rejoining, which I blieve its already done because I think I removed it before.
Range-b&, then?
Is it just me or is the H-forum just a haven for bots? I'm guessing the bots are just targeting based on the word "hentai"? I really don't know a whole helluvalot about how bots work other than them being some sort of really annoying algorithm.
Also, I must do something it seems I never remember to do, thank our admin and mod for dealing with these problems. You guys are awesome.
Hm, renaming the forum then? We can't possibly delete it (or can we?), but changing the name of it might exclude it from the botfags keyword lists, who knows.
Well, any saggestions for alternate names that will still make it clear what that area is for?
And Ive said it before and Ill say it again, like it or not hentai is part of the OS-tan fandom, a big part, and we should make no attempt to ignore it.

Whoa, believe me, that's the last thing I want. I mean, I know it's been some time since I've actually posted in the hentai area, but I do indeed lurk there.
An alternate name
might work, but something like Porn, Pr0n, Adult, Mature, 18+, etc. would likely attract the same bots. Of course, it shouldn't be anything esoteric or ambiguous, for obvious reasons, it should be something any user can figure out.
Abbreviate it to just H.
Guys, the threads came back, I probably don't need to link to them, you know which I mean...
He's at it again, huh...

SMITE SMITE SMITE
I should delete those spam threads again but since it is the same spammer (likely a bot), but it may be better to IP ban him/it though I don't know how yet -__- (Heh. some mod I am ¬_¬)
You might want to do a range-ban, just to be sure...
It was already identified and passed on to an admin, who is responsible for IP bans. The situation will be taken care of.
Sorry for the delay. The IP ban is in place, including the small range the bot was seen using.
I was thinking, though, since the Hentai section seems to attract the bots, what if we only allowed members of the OS-tan citizens group to post in the Hentai area? Since it requires 10 posts, and last I checked, spam bots couldn't read... ^^
What do you guys think?
I'm in favor of it!
Idea box is included in your payroll this month, Tsucchan -w-

a dirty noob/necro poster. point being nejin?
Conveniently stopped at 10 posts, just after we agreed to have the H-board inaccessible by users not in the OS-Tan citizen group, which craves a minimum of 10 posts...
...gah. Paranoia, maybe, but I see things, you know.
oh, Im sure that probobly was the reason, however, that is not against the rules. It proves he is not a bot at least. If a member of the community wants to show up just to find fapping material, more power to them. the 10 posts is just a hurtle that will weed out bots.
mmnnnh, mnnnnnh...the hot fax SUCKS!

Just a wonder, is there (no, I know there is, so someone do it) a way for someone to remove the "announcement" status on Kotaro's post (http://ostan-collections.net/topic-839.html)? Because, like, it annoys the living hell out of me that a crap thread like that is automatically stickie'd. Heck, why do normal users even have the ability to do announcements anyway? Shouldn't that be reserved for modmins or something?
De-stickified! Good call mentioning that- it's not a legitimate contest (there are no incentives to participate, not organized)!
Demon's eye remains watchful, Aurora dear.
Maybe I could put my lurking to good use by reporting spam and spammers here...
Added after 4 minutes:
Oh and by the way, thanks Nej, for now i finally know why I got all those PMs from Kotaro...
Ok, there have been multiple advertisement comments that I've reported recently. Ban the offender?
Also, for the 'report a comment' page, should there be a choice for 'advertisement'?
I would guess that it depends on the nature of the advert, since I would see no objetions on ads like the one in Nej's signature advertising a thread in this forum...
Put 'em up here if you see anything, it's what the thread is for.
No, the ads are completely unrelated to the images; they're ads for some sort of wedding thing.
I've reported the ones I found (boredom by refreshing the random pics on the galley index) and the comments have been deleted, but I think the spammer should be banned.
As far as i've seen it's offence->warning->reoffend->B&...
But yes a warning would be in place...
(BTW, where do you find that crap? not in the new posts, thats for sure)
At least 2 were posted on pics on Dec. 31, 2008.
I was just looking for commented pics in the random picture thing at the top of the index page of the gallery. The only even semi-relevant use of this ad comment was on a pic of LoveLetter-tan.
I think they're already past the two offense ban.
Ah, yes...
I am just lurking on the message boards waiting for new posts to pounce on...
Besides if i had to sift through the entire forum, checking every post that's out there, i'd have myself a new full-time job... :D
This is pretty old and may have already been addressed before, but all the time I've been spending in the H-section it's been kinda hard not noticing. This thread (http://ostan-collections.net/topic-609.html) is promoting pirated material...hyah, I'm such a dirty snitch.
EDIT: It seems Tsubashi-sama's solution for the bots has worked, but has also attracted a good deal of spammers/necroposters. Not really a big deal, because I'm sure forum regulars have noticed, but just a little annoying.
wow, you're actually sifting through the old threads?
Respect
*gives respect-points to Ian*

BTW has anyone noticed the randomness and uselessness of juanjisimo's posts?
Smells like spam to get to the hentai to me...
Domo, but you do me too much honor. It's a thread I've known about for a long time, but I thought it had already been reported to the mod or admin. It's old but not buried, you can find it easily on the first page of the H-section. I really don't think the Feds or the RIAA are gonna come down on this forum just because of one such thread, but it is a violation of forum rules and there are a number of forum members who would feel much better with it gone. It's also a magnet for aforementioned spammers/necroposters.
true enough....
QuoteBTW has anyone noticed the randomness and uselessness of juanjisimo's posts?

A case of blue-collar spam/troll/generally unwanted person, I'd say.
DO NOT FEED.
too late, he's probably already looted the hentai section
I doubt he's been let through the group join by Tsubashi, so that seems unlikely...
nothing in the rules against posting just enough to get to that section
Nothing in the rules to allow it, either ~v~
i know, but those posts were really borderline-spam, and spam is (tasty) not allowed
coming from you two, thats pot calling the kettle black.
i may have derailed a lotta threads, but i don't spam...
Plus i am getting more and more on topic recently
Only cus Im getting after you. But one line off topic posts are actually mentioned as being against the rules, yet people give you leniency on that. Give the person a break. Personaly Im all for making the H stuff open to people from the begining to avoid this problem.
i was just mentioning, not really acusing.....
QuoteOnly cus Im getting after you. But one line off topic posts are actually mentioned as being against the rules, yet people give you leniency on that.
See rule 7, prior to deletion...
QuoteGive the person a break. Personaly Im all for making the H stuff open to people from the begining to avoid this problem.
Well, the whole reason this was implemented was to prevent bots from spamming the H-section. While I must admit all the "spam my way to 10" posts are pretty annoying, all the necroposting is what really pisses me off. Then again, this still beats having to deal with bots in the H-section every other day -__-;.
I dislike when people only make enough half ***ed posts to get teh pr0nz, especially if their posts are primarily necroposts but at least they are not bots -_-
Should there be some changes to the rules to crack down on those kinds of posters and excessive derailment of threads? Just this afternoon I closed down a thread in the OS-tan Talk section because there was pretty much nothing more anyone could contribute to it.
ah yes the death of a thread, one i actually witnessed....
But i agree that it is a bit annoying (i know i am too), but at least it's not malicious...
QuoteShould there be some changes to the rules to crack down on those kinds of posters and excessive derailment of threads? Just this afternoon I closed down a thread in the OS-tan Talk section because there was pretty much nothing more anyone could contribute to it.
Not really, as Capt-sempai already pointed out, it's already against the rules to spam or necropost...
Quote4 - Forum posts
You must post when you have something to say only. Posting small posts ( <= 10 words for example ) without any real interest will be erased. Ultimately, it is up to the thread owner to decide if such posts will be allowed or not. If unsure, please contact thread owner AND post smart in the meantime .
Any revision is pretty unnecessary, according to the rules any of these spammers/necroposters are already eligible for disciplinary action. Of course, as Capt-sempai also already pointed out a certain number of us (including myself) have already violated the rules numerous times when it comes to spammy posts. Now I would say these incidents (even when they get a little out of hand) are hardly malicious or that detrimental to our forum, but in the interest of fairness (that is, since rule 7 does not exist)...
Basically what we'd need to get rid of these kind of things would be a bigger mod/admin team, which, aside from that purpose, wouldn't do us much good at the moment, I believe. Long story short, RAGE all you want, but do not feed the trolls.
Or the zombies, for that part.
Possible spam detected...

Yeah, and wouldn't you know it, it's in the most popular section here. I thought it would've been noticed and promptly deleted by now...
I now deleted it though i was tempted to just close it because it was the most WTF-worthy piece of spam I've ever seen!
never even followed the link BTW...
After reviewing my post, I should apologize for any perceived rudeness on my part - I never intended for the post to come out that way. Gyah, lazy post -__-;.

Well, believe me, last night (or was it early this morning) it was there. I'm guessing someone caught it, but why wasn't the poster b&?
Prolly was deleted by aroura, who doesnt have the power to ban/delete members herself. she prolly removed the thread and submitted the member to tsubashi for deletion
Oh okay, didn't know, sorry. Is there some secret part of the FAQ that explains the powers each authority has? It's amazing how long I've been a member here and not know that...

Spam deleted!
Crap!!!
Missed it again...
You didn't miss out on much but should I keep spam threads up longer for everyone else to see before deleting them?
Part of me says, keep it up a bit longer...
The sensible part of me says, naah... spam should just be deleted...
No need to worry, Aurora, apparently Smokey's not only the King (or Prince, if Nej has a say) of OT, but also the forum rubbernecker :P. If someone is missing the spam threads, I think that's a good indicator that you're doing your job right d^.^ .
Well, i can't be on the forum 24/7...
You are doing an excellent job Aurora-sama! You are a wonderful person to have around. As a minor note, though, if you start seeing a lot of spam from a small group of IP addresses, just let me know, okay? Thanks for everything, and keep up the good work! ^v^
Ah, IP-ban?
RANGEBAN IS THE NUKE OF THE FORUM WAR
Userban is the tac missile, flaming the T1 unit spam that wreaks havoc on your enemies defenses, etc.
If you're looking for artillery, though, you're gonna have to do some serious DOS-ing of your own to get rid of that punk (and fry his router while you're at it).
...yes, the internet is a strategy game. Silence.
Well, I am glad we are not at war then, ne? ^.^
I always thought the internet was the backbone of modern society, and if it went completely down (like, all 16 top-domain servers down for 24h to clear their cashes), we'd be in really deep shit....
You don't say? We'd have half the nukes of the world launched before anyone could say BSOD.
3 billion would be dead from the nuclear war called "Judgement Day", with the survivors struggling to fight against the machines--
Warzone2100 meets Terminator? Leave out terminator btw, the electromagnetic pulsef from the nukes would wipe out all machines...
But eehm, i will post here again after some spam has been detected, cus this is getting a bit OT... ^_^
Wow, totally cataclysmic.......

Rangeban request on this one, doesn't seem to be doing much good otherwise.
If possible, could we raise the anti-bot measures on the account creation/activation process?
*sigh* Repeat offenders... T_T
Deleted the spam.
GJ. Is it possible to erase such acc's entirely, btw? That would make things like the user pruning drive before mostly unnecessary, too.
Again? (http://ostan-collections.net/viewtopic.php?t=1118) Yes, again.... (http://ostan-collections.net/fpost-73648.html)
Bastard... (http://ostan-collections.net/profile.php?mode=viewprofile&u=3215)
We seem to be needing to erase that account somehow. Repeat offender x3, no good!
THIS is when we'd need that extra mod -w-;
From what I understand, mods here don't actually wield a banhammer, they can only lock and delete threads, right? IIRC, Tsubashi-dono was the one doing bans before, so it seems to be an admin privilege. In which case, adding another mod wouldn't help.
I knew about that, I was more talking about getting rid of the spam itself quicker...mods without banhammers, though, is a bit humoristic.
It's like a shark with jaw protectors getting in way of its teeth. -w-
In all fairness, there are some forums where there are different mod ranks, and the lowest of which can't ban members. :-/
Deleted the spam. AGAIN. Stupid repeat offenders!
Which brings me back to my question: Is it possible to delete the account itself? At the very least it'd make the repeat process a bit more tedious, and possibly avert the pattern...

isn't there any sort of filter function we can add in to disable him? Like, the word "rocketpub" is not allowed to be posted and will automatically fail?

SPAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAM!!!!!!!
has question, that i figure would only fall here:
who was hyp1876? (his/her name was something like that.) why was s/he banned? i've seen a couple comments on gallery pics with that user, but they were deleted cause user was banned. :\
Well, IIRC that user registered just a day or two ago, and given that the username included "@gmail.com", you can probably count on the fact that it was a spammer.
Obviously, Aurora would know better than I, as she was most likely the one that did the deleting.
Can't be hyp1876. I've been seeing his/her gallery posts since I joined up back in february.
That's right, and now that I'm thinking about it, it most likely wasn't Aurora that dealt with that user.
So yeah, I was thinking of an entirely different user... who uses an e-mail address as a username...
no, it was hyp1876. several of his comments got deleted, it said he got banned :\
my question: why would people spam HERE of all places?? we're such a small, close-knit community that idk how one could gain anything by spamming here. other sites, yeah, sure, but here, the only thing spammers could be going for is nijikaku, and well......it's broken-patchy-fucky-shit.
I have no idea why there would be any spammers here either. They usually don't go for small forums!
The question you should be asking is rather, "Why not?"
For where there is populace, there is spam - a rule of the internet as absolute as #34...
OH GODS RULE 34. *epic facepalm*
anyhoo, is it just me or has been spam been quiet recently? do i just look in the wrong threads?
hyp147258. that was Banned user.
http://ostan-collections.net/viewtopic.php?t=1148
Spamshit.
Deleted. At least it was a different spammer this time!
I was kinda reluctant to delete it, being an advertised online movie service, but touting the ability to view and download movies online for free, just seems too good to be true to me. Wouldn't such a site quickly get into legal problems? But even if it was legit and safe, such advertisements don't belong here.
Never trust, Aurora.
Never trust.
But most importantly,
never believe.

This is the most annoying spam I've ever seen.

The copypasta factor is high, but it's over 10, so it doesn't seem like it's one of those idiots...maybe I'm just aggravated at the crap formatting/spelling/grammar/general level of poster intelligence projected?
Ugh.

and no one answered mah question. i'm still curious. :\
hyp147258 was banned for.....?
...Commenting several pictures with unrelated advertisements.
I actually was one of the people who reported it. Boredom is annoying when gallerywalking is interrupted with ads.
ah. ok. ty. ^^
At first glance, this thread (http://ostan-collections.net/viewtopic.php?p=77951#77951) might seem like it was simply misplaced by a new user, which would be innocuous enough, but just after reading the first sentence, it's obviously spam.

i always miss teh posts so i am left curious as to what they were doing .___.
this still raises the question: why do they spam here?? we removed nijikaku (right?) and the users group, so what's the point?
I don't know why users still spam here, it will probably stop now that the password requirement for the H-section has been lifted (it was only there by accident to begin with anyway).
The spam we're talking about is that oh-so-universal automated advertising/scam spam. The forum is experiencing a resurgence in legitimate spambots, and I don't know if they'll ever leave. It might help if there was a stronger captcha (it's been so long since I've registered, I don't even remember if there is a captcha). It happens with nigh every service online, so there's nothing particularly interesting about it.
Anyhow, thanks to Bella-chan for beating me to this last night, and thanks to Aurora-sempai for being so prompt in dealing with it.
^^
and i don't believe there was a captcha to join :\
still. you'd think they try to spam somewhere, idk, bigger.
Quote from: "Choco-chan"still. you'd think they try to spam somewhere, idk, bigger.
Doesn't matter, free advertising is free advertising. They spam here just like they try spam your inbox, your little blog, or that random blog you sometimes find during a google search.

Hey, this guy seems to be spamming for his H-site (yeesh) and posted hentai in a non-hentai user gallery: http://ostan-collections.net/profile.php?mode=viewprofile&u=4022
Could you remove those H pictures he posted in the normal user gallery-- or at least move them into the appropriate hentai gallery? We don't want people to get the wrong impression of our site by clicking on here and having a H-picture of XP-tan be the first thing they see. >.>
At least that H-site was more relevant than most other H-spam.

http://www.ostan-collections.net/profile.php?mode=viewprofile&u=4023
Indeed... at least something that can be considered positive came out of this, depending on how you feel about more H for our gallery ;). I did notice there were items in his "blog" that were already in our gallery, but I'm pretty sure some of them aren't.
As for the spammy sig poster... it's a spambot. I'm certain of that now, as you see poster A (http://ostan-collections.net/profile.php?mode=viewprofile&u=3976) (that I identified earlier in this thread) has similar posts and the same sig as poster B (http://www.ostan-collections.net/profile.php?mode=viewprofile&u=4023). So basically we're looking at a more "sophisticated" spambot is all. Basically they're just making stock posts based on thread titles. Unfortunately for spambot B (http://www.ostan-collections.net/profile.php?mode=viewprofile&u=4023), most posters here are poor at titling their threads (http://www.ostan-collections.net/viewtopic.php?p=79505#79505) (j/k fellas). Fooled 'em... B&.

That avatar idea is quite nice, i wonder how much spambots actually put an avatar...
not many, but it's not an entirely flawless way of detection, as some users just don't want one. :\

Bot or no, that's still advertising without providing any real benefit to the thread.
This guy (http://www.ostan-collections.net/profile.php?mode=viewprofile&u=4090) isn't even trying.
Look at his sig and his posts. Spaces and English are not used properly.

Spam? (http://ostan-collections.net/profile.php?mode=viewprofile&u=4122)
not OFFICIAL spambot, since this one actually WROTE his posts the old-fashioned way, but he missed the point of the "what's playing" thread and his sig is advertising......plus he has no avi and only 5 posts....
but i'm unsure it's worth a ban YET. give it awhile, see what he does (in my opinion).
Even if this guy's not ban-worthy, one of the admins/mods/someone who can should change his sig to something less spammy.
yeah.......like i said, he's a potential spambot, maybe he just hasn't reached his full potential yet. =\

spammers here, I'm assuming. As to why, well.
Apart updating the forum engine, i don't see other options we have down here...
AFAIR, last time i suggested the idea i think you (all forum) said that you preferred this current version. I don't have many griefs about it so far, it does works ok. If we should update, i would go for SMF forums, still.
I wasn't suggesting that in any particular sense...it was less of that, more general whining. Don't take it all too seriously, we'd make a lot more noise if things got bad enough. -w-
Too bad... ;010

^^
i just wonder what compels the spammers to strike HERE. we're bloody NERDS, what would we need a prada purse for?
now, if it were a prada bag of holding.....
Well, i don't think it's targeted at all. Most spam comes from zombies computers which target the whole web, more or less. Only works (mostly works, rather) on old forums engines, that said. The newer forums have way better registration protection against spambots.
then again, the spambots obviously evolve as well, so that may not always be the case...
Well... this topic (http://www.ostan-collections.net/viewtopic.php?t=827) can be considered spam, right?
^That's not spam. The author of the post made an OS-tan game and was linking to it, but didn't get any comments here.

Well, that or he's somehow else very fond of advertising things. Either way, you have to give it to him that he's quite sneaky with it...

QuoteThat's not spam. The author of the post made an OS-tan game and was linking to it, but didn't get any comments here.
Sorry. I tought it was spam because the link didn't worked before so I tought it was an adversiment site or something like that ;077
Speaking of spammers - is it not time for us to clean up the user registry a bit?
Currently, we have 705 (activated) users with 1 or more posts, out of 1901 total - the previous pruning treshold of 5 posts is exceeded only by 391 users. Total registered users number 2019, making non-activated users number 118.
The problem could be, now that the (ever oh-so appealing) hentai archives require only a membership, that we either will have FUCKTONS of people loading their spamguns up just to keep their memberships, OR a singular massive boatload of people returning with 0-post accs post-prune.
Well, leaving this to the hierarchs.
SOMEON PLEASE BAN WHAMUEL half of his posts are ads and it's pissing me off. >:[
he actually takes the time to write something relevant, and then advertises in it. they must pay him quite a bit, or maybe just doesn't have a soul.

No, it's a dedicated server so i'm the only one to decide what and which version i install on it. Would just take some time, no money.
About the prune program, it's not something i initiated but i don't really see why it would solve anything ? ;018
True enough. We might need to reconsider our software if things continue like this...it MIGHT just be unlucky posting and summer invasion doing it, since we hardly have that much otherwise; especially that iPad post, among others. Spambots, like many others, commonly use search keys to find places where posts relevant to their spam or whatnot can be found, and then do the låda going about the place with their posting. Us generally being so extremely irrelevant to the common market that the spam is looking for is likely a large factor to us managing to avoid it as much as we have, despite having little to no protection at all; if we stray outside and into the main post stream, we are in greater danger of getting more shit in our fan, so to speak.
One (i think) simple solution would be some sort of first-post captcha check, or whatnot, of the kind that 4chan uses nowadays; if not, then it's upgrade time.
Captcha of phpBB2 is found and broken since ages now. Even surprised there is not more spam, tbh...
Found and broken, so if we do want, we need to upgrade, I suppose?
For captcha, yes
then i support the upgrade campaign. but i feel you'd be in better favour if you asked all contributing members (the people we know, the ones who actually come here for MORE than porn) before you begin.
also, does this count as spam? (last posts)

For upgrade, yes definitely. I asked back in time and people wanted to keep this forum; I don't mind at all, as long as i don't identify a security hole which could compromise the server.
And for spam, yes it was... i deleted and banned.
Not that I think anyone would actually OPPOSE the upgrade per se...it's highly unlikely that anything would break severely, as I see it.
It's more to keep the same kind of theme, i think
What, and that's all? -_- I mean, it's not like it's impossible to make a new one...
I don't know the reasons why people didn't want it back in time
maybe it's worth a re-vote? :\
i'm used to it, but i was used to gaia when they switched over to the new theme, and i got used to it with time.

I guess so.
Could you (all members) organize that and tell me what you would prefer to do, to keep and eventually to have as features on the site ?

k, but i will be able to do it only in october i think...
s'ok. we'll wait. :\
And by then maybe the SMF forums will be in final versions.
Is that the new prospective engine we'll be using?
It is.
Apart if anyone has a better suggest, that is :) (i'm not closed to other suggests)

mmm why is it spam ? It's quite in topic imo...
Look at his sig. Also, the telltale sign of posting what games he's playing in the cryptically named music thread.
I might be dumb, but ultimately i don't consider it spam, still. The answers - albeit a bit short - answers the topics and the sig... well, it's not forbidden to have a short link to a personal ( ? ) site or even not personal, as long as it's not blatant advertising. It's quite discrete here and therefore doesn't especially bother me.
At most, would require to have an eye on it to be sure it's not a spam on the long run.
Well, I only mentioned it as it follows the standard spambot template/routine that we see so often. Short posts, talking about games in the music thread, link to a website where you can buy stuff in the sig, etc...
I agree on that procedure totally :)
I maybe leave it to Aurora, since i don't exactly have the habit myself of spambots here (i don't have spam on other boards, this one is the only one :D ). I would just not like to pun a normal user, that's all.
Thanks anyway!

I'd like to mention as well, that replying to threads generated by an obvious spambot does nothing but promote the spam threads 1) by bumping them higher in the respective forum, and 2) by making it appear like an actual conversation with replies.
NB: Replying to to-be deleted crap threads also won't help users to boost their post counts, so it might be more energy-efficient to simply ignore them instead of posting witty oneliners within.

What I want to know is, why the hell is this (http://ostan-collections.net/profile.php?mode=viewprofile&u=4538) guy necroing threads at random and paying no attention at all to them aftwerwards? The hell. Obviously not a bot, but what's he going on about?
All right, that's it - he's gone on long enough.
I vote for post deletion, temp ban and warnings.

The advertisement at the end of the post does not help either.... Alright. I hope one of the admins bans that bot already (I actually cant :( ). A bot's a bot, no matter how amusing their posts may be.
Lolwhat.... ><;
If you don't get the reference, Four Loko is a dangerous energy drink that contains high amounts of caffeine and alcohol, which wreaks havoc on the body. It got banned in some places recently.

also, i think i heard that four loko was banned by the FDA a few months ago, and that the company had to tweak their formula in order to come back (there was a lawsuit, people got really hurt, etc). i think they said they were going to abandon the venture though....don't quote me.

The Most Obvious Spammer 2012 award winner was found, yes. xD Thanks. :)
I was actually going to call that one out when I first noticed it yesterday, but I decided to wait since I figured they'd post something soon enough. Obviously, they didn't
http://ostan-collections.net/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=5162
At least the spammers aren't posting aggressively (or at all), ne? ^^;
i have to say, the spambots are quite off in their assumptions of what we'd like. >>;
but then again, maybe they're not targeting us. :\
This one (http://ostan-collections.net/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=5189) seems a bit fishy as well
they're advertising opera mobile.....for russia. not a purchasable item, but an ad nonetheless. :\
Another one, (http://ostan-collections.net/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=5202) which seems to be advertizing health products.
I have to wonder what's going on here; why are they signing up, but not posting?
It can be that the bots are able to bypass the registration anti-spam systems, but not yet the posting ones. Another option is that they're supposed to post only later and not instantly after registering. Third option that I could imagine is simply registering with the spam inside their profile and never posting, so that it remains fairly unnoticed by users but can be accessed by search engines. :/
either way, they need to be cleaned out, like the scum stains they are. :\
"Scum stains" was very close to the definition I was thinking of as well, yes. xD
i wish we could do something in terms of preventative measures, but they're doing so little it doesn't look like there's anything we can do. it's kind of pathetic. :\
Well, what would our options be? Stronger captcha's, more complex sign-up requirements, etc. if we got really creative, I am sure we could write heuristic algorithms to detect improper screen names / posts based on post frequency, content, ip address, etc, but the real issue lies in what you said. They are so minuscule a problem, is it really something that we want to take the time to "solve" or are we okay just posting here and letting the noble Pitkin-sama do the occasional cleanup?
I am interested to know, though, Pitkin-sama, are they from a clustered IP range, or no?
I went for increasing the captcha difficulty for now, but that one's a bit double-edged sword, as I'm traditionally extremely poor at reading the captchas myself. Hoping it won't stop any real user from registering and that it'd maybe limit the bots a bit. ._.
On your question, Tsubashi-san (don't call me -sama), I'm afraid I don't really understand what you mean. ^.^; Do you mean if all the bots seem to be coming from similar IP addresses? I think at least that there's not been any pattern so far, but I can be mistaken. I will try to pay more attention to it from now. ^.^
As for the algorithms, we'd need a person like you to implement such as I'm incapable of making them myself. However, before such heavier measures we could try simply updating the forum engine to see if the problem is solved in the most recent version. :)
The algorithms were more of a joke on what we would do if we went over-the-top to try and stop them. While it would be lots of fun, it would be an involved process requiring time, which is a commodity I always seem to be in lack of. ^^'
As for the IP addresses, yes that is what I mean. I just remember during my time as admin there was a period of about two months where there was an unusual influx of spambots, all of which came from the same Class B network. During that time I just used a script that would alert me whenever someone from that subnet registered an account, and it was typically very easy to tell which we're real (~10-15%) and which were not.
I am not trying to imply that that is the case here, but I was curious to see.
I notice there are several bots from addresses in Ukraine, Russia and the UK, but the majority still seems to be coming from elsewhere without any concentrated origin...
Meanwhile, would you (or anyone else) have any idea for a bot-proof but human-suitable security question and a fitting answer? x)
Well, we could rewrite our captcha's style. Instead of just generating an image with a word to type, it could take a screenshot of a portion of the front page and then ask for something specific from that image (eg. Newest user, latest topic in forum x, number of redirects to the wiki, etc). That way, it would not matter how good the bot was at reading the words, it would have to know which ones to give. An even better approach would be to use image magic to dynamically replace the actual value with a randomized string.
This approach has two advantages. A) it is quasi-unique, and thus would effectively stop any mass-produced bots and B) it relies on a human understanding of relative instructions (ie since we do not tell them where in the picture they have to figure it out, something computers are notoriously bad at.)
Naturally, this would take a bit of time to write, and require some modifications to the source, but is significantly less involved than writing heuristics. ^.^
EDIT: There is one more advantage I just thought of. Since this style of captcha relies on the human's ability to tell which word to type, not what, we would not need to obfuscate the words, or make them unusual. They could be plaintext, intelligible usernames or just plain numbers, making it easier for the human who are registering.
if we set the question (who just posted, what topic it was, etc) to change every time, that adds a third layer of security. i like this idea. wish i could help, but i can't code to save my own ass. ^^;;
maybe i can contribute questions? :3
Agreed, and that was my original idea, but the problem would be making sure all questions were equally as secure. Otherwise the bot could just try until it gets a weak challenge. That said, it would not be too hard to add to the code once it was written, so it would probably be a feature worth adding.
But in the interest of the academic pursuit of the best answer, what other mechanisms could we use?
I remember one site I joined years ago asked you a series of randomly-chosen questions involving the community (The site in question was about prototype video games, so it'd ask questions involving those). We could probably come up with something
but people join here to learn about os-tans. we can't ask questions about them, since it might scare off potential members.
i still like the idea of identifying something on a screencap of the landing page. if we set it to take a fresh screencap for each registering member, then the answer to the question changes every time.
Well, if the questions were simple things that they could go look up on the site easily enough it would be okay, but the main problem I see is exactly the point you made: static vs. dynamic. While the set of questions would be randomized, there are a finite number of them, and they would require human interaction to update and revise. The modified captcha idea, however, is much more dynamic because it uses inherently random data as a seed (forum activity) and is therefore (theoretically) capable of infinite combinations.
In summary, the randomized quiz is a more certain method, but costs more in maintainability in terms of human interaction.
What else?
i don't think it would be that hard to do. maybe hard to code, but not hard to answer. for example:

Not only is its signature an ad for a DS flash cart, but its post in this topic literally copies part of one of Pit's posts in this topic (http://ostan-collections.net/forum/index.php/topic,1457.msg119151.html#msg119151). For reference, the post that was partially copied (http://ostan-collections.net/forum/index.php/topic,1457.msg97966.html#msg97966)
the brainless clod even got an avatar. dunno if it makes them look like they're trying harder, or if it's just more fail. (i'm leaning towards the latter.)
My spambot senses are tingling... (http://ostan-collections.net/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=5269)
This spambot's signature is an ad for steroids; why, exactly, they'd think that would be something we're interested in, I don't know
Didn't sell too well, those steroids. Deleted.
Why do the spammers think we'll be interested in hats, knockoff electronics or handbags? Because they're idiots, is why.
Thanks for knocking down another one, Pitkin-sama. ^^
Idiots? Don't know about that, I'd just say that either the spammers' advertising campaign hasn't been customised enough for us, or that all of us are to-be steroid-ragers in more or less cool hats and don't just know it yet.

two more topics from this guy >_<;;
It's made three threads already....

Make that four (http://ostan-collections.net/forum/index.php/topic,1563.0.html)
sorry to propagate the spam, but i posted a translation of one of the posts in one of the threads. i figured it was gonna be deleted anyway and i didn't want anyone thinking that this was just some confused otaku.
it was a really long-winded speech about swiss watches. :\
I translated the very first topic (You can see the translation a few posts ago in this topic), and it was on car wax. After that, I pretty much knew it was spam
Can we banhammer this dipshits?

@Bella: You beat me to it
Wow, the troll even sent me a welcome message!
This is amazing, it's been awhile since we had an actual troll, not just spambots. Even if their troll powers are, admittedly, lacking in technique.
Still gonna be really satisfying to see these idiots get b&
Looks like Aurora cleaned up. Although, Bella, your posts in those topics don't make much sense now, if somebody came along later ^_^;;
like me.
who sees bella's posts and thinks she got hacked.
glad this got cleared up. .___.;
(though i'd like to see their other posts, sounds funny as hell. xD)
I saved the pages before they got deleted, if you want I can send them to you.....
yes please. :3
Bella, Counter-Troll Award 2012
Especially loved the picture of the hand. xD
T-this is such an honor, thank you so much! ;u;

FIRST SPAMBOT IN ALMOST A YEAR, SOMEONE KILL IT
*stops the timer*
A rather decent time without bot-like spam. Here's to hoping the situation won't deteriorate too rapidly.
indeed. though i must say, 10-11 months without a spambot is pretty impressive.

Spambot. (http://ostan-collections.net/forum/index.php/topic,1684.0.html) Yay. (http://ostan-collections.net/forum/index.php/topic,1600.msg148247.html#msg148247)
With the first one, what they posted doesn't even fit that topic at all, while the second one has absolutely nothing to do with site feedback :\
Banned.

not sure if spambot, or just semi-poor grasp on english....
Didn't retry at least ~ pass.
looking back, their signature said "spambot" to me. but that was a month and a half ago. :\

This guy chose the absolute worst possible place (http://ostan-collections.net/forum/index.php?topic=1695.msg150865;boardseen#new) to begin his spambot career, I tell you.
what are they trying to accomplish...?

We seem to be getting idiot spambots (http://ostan-collections.net/forum/index.php/topic,1686.msg151329.html#msg151329). That, or Nej just confuses them into posting unrelated stuff in a topic :\
aha, you beat me to the punch. that sounds like a direct quote from one of the art threads, a spambot isn't coherent enough to write something like that. so either bella or an old captain post. :\
I wanna know where the hell these spambots are getting these quotes from. That doesn't look like a copypasta of someone else's post, but idk for sure.
Well, if one pops in and says "Saxon = joke account", I'll know they're copying from GameFAQs -w-;
it could have been before you even got here, bells. tbh that sounds like you, but it sounds like you from 3-4 years ago, when you weren't in school. so my bet's on one of the older members. :\
oi, two spambots over in the desu thread. they aren't threatening anything or advertising anything, but i can't see much point in keeping them around if all they ever did was copy someone else's post and then leave. >>;

I'm questioning whether the second one is a spammer, I mean, she seems to be talking about anime... normally? (albeit in the wrong thread).
The second one was parroting Nejin.
copy+paste the first bits of the sentence into the search bar. nej said that EXACT SAME post in the winter 14' anime thread. if you've read nej's posts as long as i have, the manner of speech was a dead giveaway. >>;

Is it me or is this (http://ostan-collections.net/forum/index.php/topic,1680.msg156507.html#msg156507) a copy+paste from another topic. "angel" was just created today, and the post doesnt seem in context. Am i mistaken?
I'd have to agree; the topic is on some Risk-type game, but this person copied something from a discussion on Pokémon :\
I thought so too, but I searched and I can't find any matches to the post s/he posted, so they didn't copy it from here. I agree that it's likely a bot, but it could also just be a mistaken noob. :\
Part of Nejin's post recycled.
thought it sounded familiar. so, have our council of judges laid down the hammer?

Not sure what these spambots were trying to accomplish, posting in the News & Announcements section (http://ostan-collections.net/forum/index.php/topic,1730.0.html)
Useless section removed altogether
I got a hearty lol out of the spambot posting in the news and announcements section. What better place to spam than the area designed specifically for administrative announcements... idiot.
On an OT note: Cute avatar Fedora-Tan! :D
seconding the OT. and if we don't have news and announcements anymore, where will we have news and announcements? :0
You mean we sometimes have news and announcements? x)
I don't think that'll be a problem. The announcements can be places within other subfora as well, and the news can be made to cycle on the forum front page.
Found one (http://ostan-collections.net/forum/index.php/topic,1733.0.html)
is this a bot? (http://ostan-collections.net/forum/index.php/topic,1655.msg163010.html#msg163010)
I think this is one. (https://ostan-collections.net/forum/index.php?topic=1745.msg165734)
damn, you beat me to it.
yeah.....i don't even know what to make of this one. somehow a god-modder snuck in? to a place like this? extra-weird...
What was my personal advisor doing here? Such valuable knowledge is not for sharing.
We got a real preacher in the house this time. (https://ostan-collections.net/forum/index.php?topic=1752.msg167331;topicseen#msg167331)
I didn't think I'd see the day that an evangelical Hare Krishna spammed the board...
I missed it; that sounded like it would have been amusing ;__;

Spammers: Now in Swedish. (https://ostan-collections.net/forum/index.php?topic=1754)

First post (https://ostan-collections.net/forum/index.php?topic=1776.0)
Second post (https://ostan-collections.net/forum/index.php?topic=1777.0)
EDIT: They made a third post (https://ostan-collections.net/forum/index.php?topic=1778.0)
What the hay is going on here!?
Spambot. This used to be more frequent years back, but it's become less common in recent years; likely due in part to some changes Fedora-tan made behind the scenes
I knew that user was a spambot, the moment they signed up. Should've just killed them with fire immediately.
Pit did that, as a joke (After banning that spambot; causing them to appear as a guest user). Notice at the bottom, it says "edited by PipPitkin" -w-
EDIT: To clarify, the original contents of the post had little to do with the title; it was a bizarre, somewhat repetitive essay on watching movies for free online, with some links to a shady site
It's alright; it's an easy mistake -w-;
I've just changed the security questions allowing registrations and posting for new members. Here's to hoping they'll be hard enough to bar bots from here while easy enough so that no real person misses their chance of joining. ^^;
Spammer hooooooooo:

Seems like a spambot to me
Well, this is a first: Spanbots on the Wiki (https://www.ostan-collections.net/wiki/index.php?title=Special:RecentChanges&limit=10000). Like, an influx of hundreds of new articles and vandalized articles :\
Maybe we should put some sort of verification system in place to cut down on this, or maybe bring back the "must be approved by admin to edit" system of old?

So if anyone reads this message, do check him and do your conclusions.
dunno if it's meaningful, but this user created a thread in this forum late last year. something about a facebook page. :0
The recent bot problem has potentially been resolved. The forum registration has been made a bit more challenging so hopefully that will solve things.
I have closed registration to the forum. There have been like 10 new requests a day and they all have extremely sussy emails. If you really want to make an account send me a DM on Twitter @Gouj3r.

yay me for creating a forum account before all of this happened
Recently I opened registration on the Wiki and a lot of unfortunate and deplorable things were posted.
Sorry to anyone that encountered those things.
Wiki registration is closed for now as we work to fix the damage.
It has come to my attention that registration did not require an email confirmation and that led to a lot of bad actors coming in to trash the place for one reason or another.
The gallery has also gotten some unpleasant images posted, but that has been dealt with too.
New Topics now require approval in wake of spam.

Damn thanks alot spamers now everyone gets punished for your crimes against humanity. There are more users with signatures linking to buy something or sending you to some shady website.
Looks like the email verification requirement is taking care of most of them.

In answer to increasing spam on the forum, please be advised the bans trigger are from today more wild than before. Should it affect you, please contact us directly. (Shouldn't be the case except if you use same VPN/CDN as recent russians spammers)
It won't end spam right today, just an increased step.

So could we contact you by email than? Also when is my tread going to get approved?
Trying out a new, more aggressive approval based system for those with under 10 posts. Doing anything while having less than 10 posts requires approval.
I also added more questions to the registration process.
Also took measures to ensure that only those with 10 or more posts can send DMs to people as I'm sure it's only a matter of time before that starts getting abused, if it has not been getting abused already.
Also a very big thank you Fedora for your help here.
