May I introduce: (http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k117/SystemKarela/stuff/freebsd-tan.png)
My first OS-tan with shading.
Her name is FreeBSD-tan, she is a girl with a rather bad temper and you do not want to be near her when she is angry. But when she is in a good mood, she is a good-hearted (maybe even a tad naive) person, she is always weady to help other OS-tans if they ask*.
She dislikes the Linux-girls for the same reason HURD-tan and Minix-tan do: She feels they have destroyed her youth by stealing her glory. She dislikes the Windows-girls for political reasons. However she can work together with both**.
Her outfit is based on IRL-'FreeBSD-tans', namely Devilette.
*very liberal license
**BSD-code found its way into both OSes.
Nice job! I especially like how you incorporated OS-related things into your OS-tan's personalities! And It's always great to see artists draw under-represented OS-tans! ;010
Devilette is not that underrepresented: http://www.spilth.org/pictures/girls/ceren/

Sugoi! I'm envious of how quickly and efficiently you are able to dispatch so many new tans! Great Job! ^__^
Personally, I like your new shading style, but I understand that it is a bit harder, so it's up to you what you draw! Just keep up the good work! ^o^
Besides, I'm in no fit spot to complain, seeing as I haven't contributed anything yet! ^^'
I like the shading style too. The face is especially well-done and looks 3-dimensional!
And uhh... I didn't know that Devilette was that popular! ^^; But I reckon that's the first time I've seen a rendition of FreeBSD-tan based on her though!
Sweet ZZKami-Tux!! ^v^
Given my own preconcept sketches, I have to thank you for the pitchfork and long bangs! The more they appear, the likelier it becomes for that feature to be commonplace. ^___^

Right, what Aurora means is underrepresented in the specific [=Japanese Anime] OS-tan community. In that respect, up until yours, there have only been maybe 3 or 4 FreeBSD-tans drawn at all.
QuoteBy the way, do you prefer that style or my more 2-dimensional one?
Now I see what you meant on the other thread. ^__^
Any kind of shading improves a drawing -- in her case, it adds a good dramatic atmosphere that goes well with her,... shall we say "devilishness". ^^'
I'd go with this one, but pray tell how you did the shading. I'm assuming, say in the case of the face, you duplicated the head, superimposed a 3rd shape outlining the highlighted area, created a Difference of the two, then reduced the transparency of the remaining piece. ^__^

It reminds me of when Raffaele-san asked me why Amiga-tan had no reference at all to Amy the Squirrel, the unofficial mascot of AmigaOS. The truth of it is that I had no idea Amy existed -- so I wonder if the previous FreeBSD-tan artists based their designs on Devilette or not. So in a way, it's good that someone better versed in these systems is contributing to their creation.
A good OS-tan is 1/3 art, 1/3 personality and 1/3 presentation. ^.^

I meant drawings. Aside from posts and minor wiki edits, I've yet to upload a picture. ^^'

C-Chan's right! you seems to know everything about Opensource systems, so it's really good your here!

Yeah... but this scene, which developped indepedently does also count, that was what I considered funny.

Errr, no. Paste at the same location, basically. Then turning it into a path and removing and adding knots as needed.

Yay! SUSE-chan, my old girlfriend! ^__^
I knew we argued a lot about drivers in the past, but all is forgiven! ^.^
But I am still going out with another distros.... -v-
Anyway, you're really getting into the whole shading thing now,... that's good. ^.^
But if how you're describing it is how you do it, then maybe if you tried my method it could save you some time. ^.^
Course, maybe you're able to do that quickly now. -v-

QuoteYeah... but this scene, which developped indepedently does also count, that was what I considered funny.
Haha! Of course, if I go to a FreeBSD board and ask about OS-tans,... and if I then go to an OS-tan board and ask about Devilette,... and I get a resounding "NO!" from both locations, I'm coming back to give you a nice thwacking. ^.^
Hehe, just kidding. ^v^
But seriously, for the most part, reinventing the wheel seems to be a staple of Moe personifications....
*recalls Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle-tans and shudders with disgust*
Still, I agree that adding elements of previous "mascots" is more polite. -v-
Which is why I'm giving Amiga-san a pet squirrel. ^.^

New OS-Tan uploaded. This is a DOS-tan? yes, a FreeDOS-tan. The blue hair was supposed to be in the form of the FreeDOS-whale while her dress has its color. She has GNU-horns since she is a GPLed OS. She carries a keyboard and peeks around the corner since she will mainly be found in embedded hardware and emulations.
She is almost as shy as MSDOS-tan. She loves eating conventional memory. In contrast to DOS-tan, she is aware of modern inventions like the internet, but not interested. She is member of the DOSSE, but has friendly relations (open feelings, so to say) with the other OpenSource-tans.

Wow, another person who made a FreeDOS-tan. ^___^
Raffaele-san sketched one earlier during your absence. I'm also due to craft one myself. so I'd like to take elements of both designs to create my rendition. ^__^
The fish necklace is a cute touch I hadn't considered before. ^.^

I used the trick you told me about... works good!
New FreeDOS-tan: (WARNING: if you are allergic to horrible geekiness stay clear!)
http://ostan-collections.net/imeeji/displayimage.php?pos=-4571
(If you do not understand it: DOS in any version can for many things only use the conventional memory and to be able to use more, horrible hacks were required)
QuoteI used the trick you told me about... works good!
Awesome. ^__^
I'm currently looking into upping the ante by trying out those shading techniques using Path clones. It's very cool because, depending on how you morph the original path, the shading morphs along with it (so you don't have to move two separate paths in each every time you shift an arm or something). Also, the shading using that cloning method is semi-dynamic, so as you shift the arm (for example), the shading updates relative to the new position of the arm (similar to 3D lighting, only less precise).
It opens up more possibilities. ^___^
You can see a demo of that technique here:

QuoteNew FreeDOS-tan: (WARNING: if you are allergic to horrible geekiness stay clear!)
Fufu,.. well it's still cute regardless of the uber-geek value you claim. ^___^
The other ball almost seems to have been set aside for XP (though not likely, since that hardly would amount to an appetizer... ^v^')
hehe, yeah, it is much only by DOS-Standards, so maybe it's set aside for Minix-tan, who needs 4 MB for its kernel, buffers and system tasks. Or isn't it proportional? :)

Warning, new nerdy OS uploaded!
ReactOS-tan:
She wants to be like the Windows-tans, especially like 2k-tan but then she wants to be like her sisters: wild and free(/libre/open source). What does ReactOS-tan do to solve that dilemma? Dive into nuclear physics to distract herself.
She likes almost everyone but no one really understands what she is up to. The Linux-tans think she is defacing herself and the Windows-tans ignore her despite her attempts to gain recognition.
http://ostan-collections.net/imeeji/displayimage.php?pos=-4577
In her hands are a geiger-couner and a calculator to indicate her name and multitasking abilities.
Hooray! Bravo! Love it!!!
Awesome. We finally have a ReactOS.! ^__^
(Never would've considered playing on the "Reactor" pun, so that was pretty nifty. ^.^)
And plus I'm glad to see you using that kind of shading technique a lot more now! ^v^
BTW, another nerdy OS alert, and this one strikes closer to home for you.... -v-
I found a ZETA-tan while popping into the Niijura OS-tan board:
http://www.nijiura.com/os/niji.php?res=22307
Added after 57 seconds:
It kinda reminded me of your old preconcept for BeOS-tan (the original) that you posted some months ago. ^v^
Wow, good thing I did not do Haiku as I planned...
And about the reactor-pun... they even have an atom as logo...
Meanwhile, I drew a new one:
Syllable-tan.
Her hair looks like the Syllable-'sun' she is skating because she is both fast and unstable. That is also the reason why she looks wide-eyed to what is in front of her. She tends to be for herslf and has not much contact to others*. to be safe, she only skates in a body protector and protects knees and ellbows**.
She gets along with the Unix-offspring despite not being one of them. They consider her a friend of the family***.
She likes music and playing games. Another passion of her are fancy dresses****
* Syllable does not know many filesystems and many types of networking
** Syllable is secure
*** "99%" Posix-compatible
**** the GUI can look in many different ways.
Okay, I was feeling weird, so here a weird OS:
Plan 9 from Bell Labs. Of course this OS is named after plan 9 from outer Space and so I drew her as astronaut. The rabbit-ears are a reference to Glenda, the Plan 9 bunny, as is the white hair and her white skin. She is the next OS-tan, I drew waving something, in this case a file with the name of the plan 9 shell on it. In her other hand, she has a bell, was reference to the bell labs..
Ah, you beat me to her. -v-
But the design elements are similar to my preconcept, so I guess that means you and I think on the same wavelength. Her clothing actually looks like the space suits the aliens use in the original "Plan 9 From Outer Space" film, so i think that works for the better. ^__^
Rabbit ears are a definite plus for some necessary Glenda homage.
The bell did surprise me though, but the she is "Plan 9 from Bell Labs" eh? ^__^
BTW, would you agree that she and Unix-sama would NOT get along?
=============
Oooh sorry, didn't see the Syllable-tan (wish I stopped by here more these past few days). She's surprisingly cute, but interestingly-enough, the eyes and her expression suggest to me that the Anime influence is starting to seep into your Western style. Definitely no complaints from me if that's the case. ^__^
I never really was western style-wise, I was just minimal ;)
I would think Unix-sama and plan9-tan would not like each other rather well. the Linux tans... now that is a different story, but Plan 9 changed Unix-sama's beloved Unix-principles so much that they can not get along. Oh BTW: if someone wants the SVGs tell me. After the contest I will upload a lot anyways but I fear if I uploaded now thigs, it would end up being redundant.
Fufufu... never underestimate the /C-chan's ability to recall seemingly pointless facts.... -v-
http://ostan-collections.net/post-4346.html#4346
In fairness, though, you just said you "preferred" Western-style, but not that you actually drew it intentionally. ^.^
And the UNIX/Plan 9 animosity is perfect,... means that my story settings are not far off from reality. ^___^
Course, one has to wonder why the free BSD trio would prefer to hang around with Plan 9 and Inferno rather than with other Unices, but I reckon a little mix-and-match is probably warranted. ^__^
Because the BSDs remeber one bad lawsuit against their mother?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Berkeley_Software_Distribution#Net.2F2_and_legal_troubles
That is so perfect, I could just hug you to death right now. ^.^
I think OS/2 needs to be drawn as well! Thanks, C-Chan for the design!
Yes, I could have drawn her with a phaserbut I feared for the windows-tans in the gallery.

Wow! This is your best one yet, IMHO!
QuoteYes, I could have drawn her with a phaserbut I feared for the windows-tans in the gallery.
Lol, good point. She probably wouldn't be very affable towards them, would she? (more than probably ^^; )
Dang, the thread got buried so quickly, I almost overlooked this. >_<
Phenomenal work, Kami-Tux!! ^v^
It is, I believe your best piece to date, and the lighting goes a long way to adding a dramatic air to hair which is appropriate (given her vendetta). ^___^
You also did an excellent job shading the folds of her skirt and accentuating her cheek (Animesque-style). ^___^
The only suggestion I might have is that the blue "Warp" insignia on her chest has been discontinued,
Even though it's still in my old chibi rendition, I'm replacing it going forward with the new "Greater Than C" style bronze logo that SleepyD came up with and Darknight used in his rendition:
http://ostan-collections.net/imeeji/albums/userpics/10553/OS-2_WARP_500K.jpg
http://ostan-collections.net/imeeji/albums/userpics/10274/OS2_Final_version.jpg
I believe the reasoning was that "Greater than C" = "Greater than the Speed of Light", or more commonly thought of as "Warp" speed. ^___^
QuoteLol, good point. She probably wouldn't be very affable towards them, would she? (more than probably ^^; )
[pondering] Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm,...... no. ^___^
eCS-chan might be a more civil, but OS/2-san definitely would go ballistic. ^.^
Bear in mind that even though she doesn't have her phaser, she can still use her multithread hair to fight. ^____^
I used your chibi as basis... it seemed to have a logo, which I saw as startrekesque... "bigger than c" is of course a better symbol...
QuoteBear in mind that even though she doesn't have her phaser, she can still use her multithread hair to fight.
Oh dear! I should put my ME-tan into another album then...
A new OS-tan... especially for IanDanKilmaster:

Ubuntu-tan
Great work, Oh Great Penguin God! Juzo-kun should be proud to know that her designs are being recognized and spread. ^___^
BTW, did you copy and paste several oval shapes to create the dreadlocks, or did you use pen strokes? Either way, it's quite detailed.... 'v'
As for the system itself, I'm afraid I'm being one over by KDE (and hence Kubuntu). -v-
I know it's bloated, but on my machine you can't really tell the difference, so the performance is great through and through.... ^.^
Switched to a Gnome session, and suddenly things felt claustrophobic. ^.^'
I used paths and then just moved them. Maybe a bit bassic and primitive, but I am using Gentoo and therefore am used to it.
It's good work.
thank you! Anyone has a non-standard OS, he wants to see?
Is there a MEPIS-tan yet? That might be cool to see! ^__^
A MEPIS-tan might have an interesting Egyptian theme, no? ^^
Might sound strange, but I'm actually hoping for a SLAX-tan,... don't know why, but guess it's because I envision her with a giant 4-leaf clover on her hair. ^.^
Also, don't forget you had a preconcept for BeOS-tan some months ago. That new ZETA-tan that came out should offer some more ideas.
I am thinking of drawing Haiku OS since Be is no more.
Now now, I'm sure there are still some friendly individuals supporting the old BeOS still. -v-
Heck, there are still people keeping the Commodore 64 and Apple Newton alive, even though they were discontinued ages ago! ^.^
But yes, Haiku-tan would be nice. A Japanese theme is mandatory on that one, though. ^v^'
well, they like BeOS so much that they re-program it as OpenSource OS, which is exactly Haiku OS. But when Haiku OS will mature, there is no need to use BeOS anymore..
Nifty! I didn't know there was a Haiku OS! I guess you learn something everyday! What are your plans for her?

Bravo-desu!!! You just get better and better! especially good work with the folds in the cloth!
Thank you! *blushes under his feathers*
She looks quite motherly, especially with nicely designed yukata ^^ ;010
Yeah... she represents the long tradition of BeOS (even though not the OS itself), which started in the good old pentium 1-days. So I wanted to give her a certain grace and maturity.
May I present: Solaris-tan!
I used Aurora Borealis's design but made the colors more CDE-ish (yes, Solaris can use other GUIs as well, but I thought the typical CDE-colors would be recognizable)
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k117/SystemKarela/stuff/solaris-tan.png
Sorry, wasn't around to see Haiku-tan. Uber Kudos for the geisha-esque look, and yes she looks quite fair and mature. ^^
Solaris-tan is a waitress I see serving Java -- and like I told Aurora, she reminds me WAY too much of Luna Inverse. Uber-Powerful sorceress type working in a coffee shop, so stay off the lewd remarks when ordering your mocha. ^^'
Since I'm approaching this with a clear Anime bias, I'd say your eyes are drawn very nicely and with considerable improvement,... -.-
Thank you. I am trying to use the parts of anime, with which I feel comfortable with.
At least the colors now have some form of meaning: the lilac is the background of every Solaris, I have seen so far, most likely default, the red is the color of titlebars and highlights in CDE and the grey is the coor of menues or the window background.
Eventually a new -tan:
I think it is clear whom I drew here isn't it? :>
Nice job with the Solaris-tan! Ehehehe... Solaris-tan's resemblance to Luna Inverse is purely coincedental! ^^;
*looks at new OS-tan, answers in the form of a Jeopardy question*
Who is "Red Flag-tan"? :D
Right, she is Red-Flag-Linux, a Chinese distro based on RedHat-Linux (just in case you only saw that on the thread-title).
Aha! There she be! ^___^
And I was just wondering about her in fact, since it seemed like quite a while since we were all discussing her preconcept. ^.^
To think she could end up being one of the most influential OSes in the world. ^___^
BTW, did you draw the flag using the freehand pen tool?
No, I drew a rectangle, rotated it, turned it into a path, added nodes on the upper and lower side, created a wave-movement and then set a color gradient. I can send you the svg. I will not upload it publically until May however (sell in may and go away, you know? :) )
Well, I think i sort of drew it the way you said it, but please check to see if that's how it was done. ^__^
(in the attachment)
I had twice as many points for the waves. Both for the extrema and for the turning points. Also, I did not see a gradient of color there. Might be my version of inkscape however...
I would add a flag myself but it seems not to accept my tarballs.
Oh right, didn't care much for the gradient, just the shape. You know the sucker I am for efficiency, so the less nodes used the better (certainly memory-wise) . ^v^
Good red girl. ^^
She is ....?

Comic 2: another language (Gentoo-tan, ME-tan, NepaLinux-tan)
Comic 3: Hungry, hungry FreeDOS-tan (FreeDOS-tan)
HAHAHA! IE doesn't follow the HTML standards! So true! :D
LOL! funny but so true! Reminds me of the times I had to support IE 5.0 on my site
*Shudders*
Like I said in the IRC, I thought it was funny how much stuff Konqueror-tan has in her pockets, but it's appropriate considering how much she can do ^__^
Kami-Tux, you're hiding your thread again! ^0^
Sorry I didn't get to this sooner,... very cute comic, and their eyes are wonderfully done! ^___^
Plus the fact that we finally have a Konquerer-tan brings much joy too. ^__^
BTW, who's that in the photograph in Konquerror-tan's left pocket?
That is Lynx-tan! A blind catgirl (lynxgirl) who aged gracefully.
Aa sou,....
I used Lynx once before,... it felt....... quite....... nostalgic. ^^
http://ostan-collections.net/post-28372.html#28372
Wallpaper contest is over, so figured it'd be about the right time to ask for your commentary on this entry, which I'm quite glad you managed to produce given how excited you were of the mass rally idea.
BTW, thank you for the Amiga and OS/2 cameo. -v-
I already uploaded it to the SVGs and commented it there: The nearly unknown OS-tans go, fly or hush to redmond to make their voices heard. This pictures includes (from left to right): Minix-tan SuSE-tan, HURD-tan, Linux 0.12+VM-tan, Redflag-tan, Amiga-tan, OS/2-tan, Ubuntu-tan, DamnSmallLinux-tan (near ReactOS-tan's elbow), Plan9-tan, ReactOS-tan, NepaLinux-tan, FreeBSD-tan, Syllable-tan, Gentoo-tan, Solaris-tan, FreeDOS-tan, Haiku-tan and there is an evil Windows-tan
I created a new comic, mainly to get into the flow of things again: http://ostan-collections.net/imeeji/displayimage.php?pos=-6404
Nice-o! ^__^
And I've noticed by now that the Penguin does love her Lynx! ^v^
*blushes* I just have a heart for crude browsers and OSes *points to its user title*
Very nice work although I sadly don't understand it entirely :(
Is Lynx a really old, basic browser before the days of images being commonplace so that's why she's blind? (I'm just guessing here)
Lynx is primarily used by blind people, because it works in text modus only. That is why she has no idea what that weird <IMG> tag means (except the ALT parameter of it)
It's Konqueror-tan! Nice one Kami-Tux! ^_^ To see Konqueror-tan is rare. I have Konqueror on YDL btw. Although based on what a freind of mine told me that it's kind of buggy for OSX and Windows. So still waiting for the next version.
