I've been thinking about trying to make a game of sorts based on the OS-tan. Nothing too fancy, just a good ol' "oldskoo" SNES-like platformer game. The problem is, I'm not so great with graphics, and I'm still a novice programmer. So I would appreciate help, comments, advice, etc. from people.
EDIT: Here's stuff that I need to work on.
Design Engine
I need to figure out what to create this game with. Preferably something easy to use and free without limitations (watermark, limited features etc.). MP3 support (for background music) and the ability to create the game as a stand-alone executable are very important. If I do well enough, I just might do a rewrite of the game in a proper programming language (after learning it, of course).
Story
I'm trying to come up with a story myself. I know most platformers don't really have a plot, but something needs to be there. All I know for sure right now is that the main character is Toshiaki.
Graphics
Since I'm totally incompetent with graphics, I either need existing sources, or people to help me with graphics. As far as player sprites go, I feel that "SNES size" would be the easiest to work with. Look at the characters Super Mario World and Final Fantasy 3/6 for an example. Enemies and bosses... I haven't gotten that far yet. --; For map graphics, tileset-based stuff would work the best. If anyone's ever done "ROM hacking" or messed around in RPG Maker 2k/2k3/XP, you'll know what I'm talking about.
Map Design
Oy vey. I never was much good at level making, even a few years back when Jazz Jackrabbit 2 was still widely netplayed.
Music
I actually have some music lined up for this, a lot of good stuff from Overclocked Remix (http://www.ocremix.org/), a site with some very good remixed video game music. As far as suggestions go, I'd say keep them on hold until I see what the levels are going to look like.
Please don't think that I'm trying to make other people design this game for me. I'm not trying to. But I don't think I can work on every aspect of the game on my own.
Anything else... I'll update this post.
Note that I am doing this in my free time, and I'm not sure how far it'll go.
NOTE: Mods, move this topic to whereever it should go, if not here. I'm not sure if a fan-made game would be considered a 'fanfic'.
The project seems interesting even if I'm not sure i could help a lot since i'm also a crappy designer... I could help a bit about c++ since it's really like php that i use here.
All I could offer for now is hosting your project and a place to talk about it ;010
I know Captain is good at design but i know he's busy and i don't know if he'll be interested... You should ask him (or i'm pretty sure he'll see this thread too ;) )
Just ask if you need anything ;hi
DarkLord, I'm not even sure if I can follow this through. I would hate it if you guys set up all this stuff for me, only for me to run into some RL crap which prevents me from working on this. But I'll try.
Anyway, for design, I want to start by using a simple design tool, something for me to cut my teeth on. If it works well enough, I would probably feel motivated to learn C++ or something more efficient.
What I really need is a large chunk of free time to take a serious look at this and plan it out. I'm in my first semester of my first year in college, and since it's almost finals time, I'm running around like a total dumbass trying to keep everything in shape.
For starters, I'd appreciate any graphics samples, or sites with royalty-free graphics. I've thought of some more things to work on, so I'll update the topic post.
Well let's see the mind of other members first and then we'll see... ;010

I edited forum name so it'll fit here :D
humm, you could go old pixil art stuff, but if thats the case, I cant help you one bit. I really truly suck at pixil art. I learned how to make those little screen mates once, but i never compleated any just cus i cant do the pixil art to compleat them -.-
another posibility is flash. Flash MX can do alot of what you said you wanted. It can be saved as an exacutable for downloading, or we could embed it somewhere on the site for people to play. Its got an easy image interface making work for your artist/graphics people esier as well. There are dozens of websites and books that will teach you all the ins and outs of flash action script as well.
Ive seen som really good games (as well as many more bad ones -.-) built with flash.
as for story and such, you could go several ways. Platform games are nice, I love em, but I cant see it doing to well with the tans. They seem more suited for say an RPG or a dating sim. A little more of a streach but still workable are the fighting game style, or puzzel types, which im sure we have all seen the mock ups of what they COULD look like floating around as doctored images on the web.
I mean that one that Q4(V) found was nice, but I think ME was more suited for a tetris type defrag game then that one.
now depending on how the two projects develope you could snag story and such from the Manga we are working on, tying them together and such for mutual.. something or other. You know, fans of the comic would love to play the game, or the gamers read the comic, and it saves on writting, and if you do go with flash and can embed it on the web, it will draw people into the site and forum
Flash MX, hehehe. I can't afford Flash, and I'm way too paranoid to crack it. Anyway, I can see your point about the platformer thing not suited to the OS-tans, but maybe I can try to do something that combines platformer and RPG, something like Castlevania. Of course, I could make an RPG with anything in the RPG Maker series, but... I dunno. I'm still caught in the academic shitstorm that close-to-finals-week is, so there's been zero progress on this.
And pixel art, unfortunately, was what I was trying to go for. T _ T
But I still don't know where I want to go with this. ;026
Edit: What the HELL was that? I didn't expect that weird thing...
There were so great SNES RPG games... i can help u lots, but mostly with ideas, or "scripts" on what people should say...
QuoteJazz Jackrabbit 2 was still widely netplayed.
And it still is.
Anyways, the villain could be some sort of supercomputer (ala MPC from Tron and Kingdom Hearts 2... Yeah, that's my current avatar.) churning out evil robots...
...with Clippy as its henchman. *rimshot*
Hello, I'm also a noob game developer. I'd like to help if possible. I could make the sprites if they're 32 X 32 pixels (see my avatar). I've also made a really oldschool RPG called Blood Of The Demons (no, it's not as violent as it sounds...) It's Windows only though.
Are the OS-tans fighting you, or are you working with them, or are the NPCs?
My RPG is at ca.geocities.com/xentaliongames
haha this is quite old if you wanna learn C++ i sugest you buy a book dude
thats how i leanred and looked at alot of source code not hardcore stuff but just lil by lil
as far as anything goes dive into direct X cuz windows GDI is meh lets just say i know a expert who has troubles with it
but yea Direct X man
now i sux @ drawing things also
so i can hepl you with the programming but the art and story i sux @ hardc0r3
even though i love to write..hmmm
anyways

Wow, this is quite an old thread. ;__;
Used to do pixel game art, but only in my dreams would I have the time to work on another game this late in the game. -v-
On the other hand,... maybe if it were like an OS-tan variation of the old Lemmings games (the DOS-era ones, where the characters were barely detailed), then perhaps there might be a way to cheat using Poser. ^__^
I can help out with graphics, but thats kind of about it. Oh music too, and maybe an intro vid...
We still have to make sure that this project is being considered. For all we know, it could be dead and we're just "necroposting"... ^^;
If anything, we should get that dating sim we were talking about back on track. I think someone on Wikipedia had something going:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Wikipe-tan_visual_novel_%28Ren%27Py%29.png
You dirty necroposters you!
If i could find the base flash file that someone has been using to make all the flash date sim games Id do up some artwork to post into it, but my flash knowlage is to basic to start one from scratch -_-

Same here, but i know my way around a pixel or 1024.......
Hey! Is this what you're looking for?
http://sourceforge.net/projects/renai/
Or this?
http://bladeengine.com/news/currentNews/2006/0724.php
Oooh, "OS Independent". Wonder if I can work on it on Xubuntu, eComStation or AROS....? ^___^
But still, the question remains...
Is there still the time to start an OS-tan game?
Clearly it'd be fantastic, but you know how projects shrivel and day if there's not enough active participation. -v-'
I've used Blade Engine myself and created a game with it just this year. It is easy as heck to use, but unfortunately at least back in September buggy enough to make even the perfect script to malfunction in the 'latter' (ie not the very beginning) parts of the game. If the bugs have been removed (or cut drastically) since, I can recommend it.
My game wasn't a dating simulation, for the record. I used the engine to turn a birthday story written a year earlier into a game as a present to my friend. Turned out to be a plotless adventure novel featuring Windows 2000-tan as the invincible minion of a mighty summoner Pitkin. :p
This seems like a good idea you should make it like a visual novel tye thing that would be awsome.
Hmm...visual novels tend to be easier to make. Why don't we create a visual novel and host it here? Here's a few links to get your creative juices flowing:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Visual_novel
http://nscripter.insani.org/index.html
http://www.newgrounds.com/collection/datingsims.html
http://www.renpy.org/wiki/renpy/Home_Page
Ive never been a big fan of those visual novels -_- I personaly think our time would be better spent elsewhere in that degree.. But I am just one voice (my hands are pretty much full right now anyways...)
they can be quite well done. A lower level of interaction, sure, but TYPE-MOON and 07th Expansion have done a pretty good job with those.
Of course, sometimes finding the good stuff can be like finding a needle in a haystack
Not to rush things, but I thought it would be a good idea to consider. I thought a visual novel would be easiest, since complete dating sims take farkloads of time. I was hoping someone had a higher opinion on this, since I've only played one or two and only finished one.
A visual novel, is, well, a novel. Or at least a short story.
The good ones have intricate plots. Making a visual novel with that could take just as much time as making a dating sim, if not more.
I have played through visual novels...
I finished Tsukihime once, to Arcrueid's true ending. (Still playing it) And have played through a bit of Fate/stay... (all I got to say for that is, WOW, that's a lot of kanji...)
TYPE-MOON seems to be quite good at writing up vivid descriptions of things, I think.
anyway, my two cents.
If I had the base Flash file for a decent date sim it would be that hard to swap the artwork actually.. its the building and codign the document I cant do. that and im streached to thin as well.. least till i get a new job
*reads whole thread*
well, if people are still interested in trying to pull this together (the VN date sim thing), I'll see if I can't get a few people that have decent knowledge of handling ren'py to help out.
as for alternative engines, you're kinda limited.
Quotehttp://www.livemaker.net/ - LiveMaker (JP) - requires a windows capable of handling JP filenames.
if I can think of another one that's decent enough and there's still interest in doing this, I'll post back. my "Project Quene" is full right now, so I'm not gonna commit to this quite yet, regardless of interest.
If I recall from one of NewYinzer's other posts, this project has been pretty much shelved. ^^'
So don't worry,... you can continue working on your stuff. ^.^
I'll do the same with my micro OVAs.... -v-
How about making a visual novel first (because it seems to be easy) and after that we make something harder an Sim-dating game after that a RPG?
But to be honest a RPG would be cool! My ideas/suggestions/imagination about the story that we could/can make:
- We start in the past where win95(s) battles against those macs/apples/etc. (It was something like a war) but at the end windows win over those (like in the reality). So they don't like each other. (can't get along)
- After that "war" it was really pieceful Win95 retired and now she has more sisters/daughters (the the Windows Os s) they had a lovely and peaceful time.
- but now a another "war" breaks out because those Macs/apples get strong again (rise again from the ashes).
- to get some romance stuff in it, we can put Toshiaki (If i'm right Toshiaki is japanese and means Anonymous or something like that, but you/we will never see his face) in the game
-he is in some kind of love between the OS that the player most used or like but that OS must go into the "dangerous battle" where she could die/deleted.(Oh i almost forget to mention that those OS-girls obtains the abtility to go into the real world)
- the "war" get more and more worse because many of those OS are going to delete/kill each other (sounds cruel i know ;015 ) while that happens in the (ingame) reality many PC going to explode/damaged/freeze/etc. if they have a internet entrance. (because the most battles will happen on the internet)
- At the high point of the "war" between Windows and Macs/Apples/etc. where both sides had to suffer high losses, suddenly a new enemy came! A mysterious organisation created a huge army of hacking-killer-viruses to control the world by hacking/delete into all (Private)Computers/Laptops all over the world!
- (romance stuff again) The advance of the hacking-killer viruses get more & more worse (more and more PC get unsteable, get hacked or the OS get deleted). The Os-girl that Toshiaki loves will get affected during a battle with one of those macs/apples/etc. to! that means she is going to die...
(i can't stop crying ...)
Toshiaki (a quite good programmer) tries everything what he knows and can do, but nothing stop that virus from deleting the OS-girl.
But suddenly for a strange/mysterious reason the Virus stopped at 99%! (that can be the"power of love" or the "kiss" scene)(this isn't a Hentai-game so no Sex scene)
- saved but weakened the OS-girl still want to fight (but against the virus).
While Toshiaki is trying to stop her, outside are the total chaos (Armed robberies & accidents)
- (now we re going to the end of this story^^) At this point i can be a drama or a happy end (a various ending)
the ending depends from finding the characters who join your group
if the player find to less it is a drama the Os-Girl die because she used all of her last energy to kill/delete the MainVirus (last boss) to rescue the world (buhuu... :( )
If the player find at least the half of those characters, the world is saved and the Os-girl is alive but she lost all of her memories (toshiaki tries to get those memories back), and the end there is a scene where u can see that the evil comes back
if the the player find every character: (happy end) OS-Girl kill/delete the Main Virus with the untied power of every Windows/Macs/Apples/etc. (so they get along again/peace between Windows and every other OS) and everyone came back alive(reprogrammed/or something like that) and the romantic life between the Os-girl and Toshiaki can continue
unimpaired ^^ (BUT THE EVIL NEVER DIES so there is a scene where you can see that those evil guys/last boss/ mysterious organisation wasn't defeated 100%-ly (so maybe a rise up or a second season)
THE END or should I say to be continued
for the Openning we can use the openning song that we already have or we maybe use those from the (AMV) "OS" IDOL M@STER music/songs
I hope the story/art was some kind interesting...
I'm sorry i didn't read everything so I'm sorry if i repeat something...
Yeah, precisely for some reasons mentioned prior to your post, I think we're gonna hold off from any game project for the time being. Certainly as long as we have no one who can (or has the time to) work on the game engine. ^^'
BTW, now Windows would have an awful lot of trouble winning a new war like they did back in '95.
Not only are the Macs strong and smarter, but now the powerful Linux-tans are around to outperform Microsoft in its pricing game (free vs. looks-like free). ^___^
Might explain why M$ is desperate to expand into new products (like Xbox and Zune). ^.^
may someone give me some feedback about the story/idea that i wrote before ^^ even if no-one can make this game?
you shoudl creat a thread for story feedback
and windows will continue to smash your pathetic little army!!
Quote from: "CaptBrenden"you shoudl creat a thread for story feedback
really?
Quote
and windows will continue to smash your pathetic little army!!
we will see .... muwahahahaha ^_^
i was talking about the mac linux and other specialty OSes that C-Chan is a rabid fanpig about
Oh I see -.-
Hey now, I only mentioned Mac and Linux. ^__^
I'm leaving the other OSes out of this game just to be chivalrous. We want to just brutally defeat the Windows-tans, not outright annihilate them.... ^_________^
BTW, speak of the devil.....
http://www.nijiura.com/os/niji.php?res=21667
Assuming that's not just another mock video game, that could be the preliminary work for a mini OS-tan RPG. ^__^
I think it would be cool to make an OS-tan fighter game with a wide variety of OS-tans in it!
Game Engine............ ^^;
ARGHHHH.... Is here really no-one who can help us??? Is here REALLY no-one who can use/make Game engines ???? #-__-
There are.. they just arnt on this forum -_-
Oh my god! The story Thurosis wrote is so deep and such that it melts my ice-cold heart! *sniffs, and starts to cry* This really should be done. If only I could help...
Quote from: "Exa"Oh my god! The story Thurosis wrote is so deep and such that it melts my ice-cold heart! *sniffs, and starts to cry* This really should be done. If only I could help...
^_^ Really? Was the story really that good that your cold-heart melt?? ^_^
I'm really happy to hear that !!
I just mixed the manga "A.I. love You" from Ken Akamatsu, the PS2 game "Suikoden" and of course OS-tan ;054
(I got this "Story-idea-mixing" when I was at the toilett ;010 hehehe...)
When you flush... things tend to blend together eh?
Quote from: "Triple8"When you flush... things tend to blend together eh?
I don't know sometimes the good ideas are coming when someone is at the toilett ....
It's weird but true. The toilet is the thinking place.
This could be used for a sim-dating game? :D
(http://ostan-collections.net/imeeji/albums/userpics/11311/OS-Xp_speaking_c2.gif)
I got this idea in the wc too ....
(really strange, maybe i should stay in there :D)
Now that you mention it, that's actually not a bad idea. -v-
Certainly would require less time than animation, since you're moving very little. -v-
But the problem is still the engine.... ^____^;
like I said before.. there are some cheaply made flash date sims that seem like they just swapped out the images and text in them. If we could get a copy of a master of that, we could use our art skills to build it into the tans. But I cant find anything without google so someone else.. please feel free to look for something like that..
This is a super idea! I like it but I have only one problem ;018 I have so many things to do! (Not only the drawings/design and animation I must do, in my family are some problems that must be solved right now ... -.-)
I will have time again in 2 or 3 days...
Hi evryone again^^
I don't know if that was mentioned here before but did anyone thought about that "RPG"-MAKER- programm which can produce RPG like those from platform SNES (Super-Nintendo)
But I have the Xp version and that can create something with better grafics !
i've heard alot of bad comments about the RPG maker series but i haven't really tried it.
i personaly didnt like RPG maker -_-
I have RPG MAKER XP too.
but sadly...I didn't touch it for a year because the work from university..So I made the H-Game for LAST game before go to the way of fully art >_<..
P.S. I have Renai-Simulation Maker from COPY from torrent...But I can't translate it because it's fully japanese...
I can make game ,but I can't type enlish. - -"
No problem. ^__^

You can throw a rock in this forum and hit about 20 English speakers. ^v^'
Quotebut sadly...I didn't touch it for a year because the work from university..So I made the H-Game for LAST game before go to the way of fully art >_<..
Well yes, that kind of stuff surely complicates progress on game making. ^^'
I myself committed to the Wallpaper contest, so I can't entertain the thought of game-making or micro-OVAs until around the end of April. ^.^'
is there a hope to make an OS-tan VN or Sim date?
Most certainly. If you are dedicated enough, and are or know someone who is a good developer, the project would be entirely feasible. Unfortunately, people thusfar have been rather busy ^^'
This is a great idea, in my opinion.
I was going to suggest we use LOZ: LTTP as a base, but as a first it would most definitely be breaking copyright laws if you don't own the original game. :(
What would be interesting though is if we took Thurosis' storyline and applied it to an RPG (Hopefully not a turn based fighting scheme!). It would make things a bit more interesting, and add more interactivity to the mix.
Howdy Ragenule. ^__^
Do hope to see you over yonder in the Members Intro Thread.... ^__~
Assuming this game project does get off the ground ever, I would definitely recommend a Free, Open Source engine. ^__^
I've spent too many years of my life editing commercial games that have long since been made obsolete.... -v-'
You could just use the graphics engine I already made for my game. Just email me and I will show it to you =3.
Yo DeusEx. ^__^
Sorry, 'fraid you arrived 3 months too late,... ^.^;
No way am I gonna commit the mistake again of spreading myself thin with a hundred million different projects and never being able to finish a single one. I'm not even 100% sure I'll be useful to you for the desktop assistant, but at least I'm more confidant with that project since it doesn't require even a 10th of the complexity as a full-blown RPG. ^______^;
hi i need more of this thing, can anyone tell me to the direct link for this kind ?
and i looking for the os tan series desktop mascot program
sample link below!
http://rapidshare.com/files/54049451/rbxpver2.1a.zip
ummm... can I help?
How about using RPGXP as the game tool?
Sorry for resurrecting this a year after its death, but this sounded like a good idea. I have no idea how to program this but I have ideas: You can choose which team to be with (Win, Mac, Linux) and the choice alters the game (i.e. Windows team fights Macs and viruses, Mac team fights Windows and viruses, kind of like a difficulty setting.)
And an idea for a secret, hidden boss battle: Deranged ME-tan. She could probably inadvertently destroy the internet in an insane state, it is up you you to calm her down after finishing the main game.
Also, why not be able to choose your character for each team?
it would really be awesome as a long term project
Talk about necro...
Also: IDEA! What if, you picked the linux team, and you sort of "kept" grubs and had to feed them kernels and roots to gain points?
urhur, [/pun]
As one grows up, he will start realizing the difference between an unfulfillable dream and a real project.
He will also be able to tell the difference between a banana and its image...
...meaningly that the latter can be burned on cd.
I'm not so good at desing too, but you're loking for a engine too, right? If yes, you should take a look at Scirra Construct - it's freeware and I saw somewhere that is damn easy to create plataform games with it.
Well, if you didn't gived up on it yet.
y'know, i've always wanted to use rpg maker to do something like this, but haven't had the time.
maybe once i get a better co9mputer i'll reset argo to XP and start the project. ^^;
WARNING: Unrelated Thought INBOUND!
---
I was thinking that the cast of OS-tans would be good for a one-off Touhou-y game (yknow, shmup levels with character bosses at the end of each)
The question is, who would be the playable characters? There could only be about 2-3.
Well, depends on the setup...
You could go with, say, Linux-tan/XP-tan/Sonata (the classic trio), 95/2k/XP (the M$ contenders), XP/Vista/7 (the new NT's), or just something else random...it all depends on who the bosses are. I mean, you could easily just throw together, say, a game with OpenVMS/BSD/Viru-tan or something, to battle the Windows family or whatnot, but it has to be feasible story-wise as well...
nej, the classic trio is ME, 2k, and XP. like neopolitan ice cream. :3
