With Vista only recently released, was just wondering which of you are either already using Vista, or planning to. I plan to reformat my PC with Vista this month as soon as I can upgrade my HDD capacity.
Planning to. When I get my new laptop in some 4 months. Hopefully there'll be a lot of bugs fixed in that time :D
But I wouldn't mind staying with Windows XP for some more time...
I've tried out a PC running Vista for a couple minutes when at a store with computers on display out of curiousity. Can't say if I'm impressed or not because it was only for a few minutes but I really like the GUI though! Got a lot more eye candy but at least it doesn't look as cheesy as XP, IMO.
But wait a minute, that PC was using Vista Home Basic and I thought the Home Basic version (as well as any pirated Vista version) didn't have the Aero interface! (There was an article about it on Fark a few months ago)
Definantly gonna hold off on getting Vista.
I just don't have a reason to get it! XP suits my needs just fine.
Already have, and am running Vista. Can't say I'm impressed though, it really bogs down my computer (I don't use my PC much, so it's kinda old ^^; ) I'll probably end up switching back to 2000 Pro. ^.^
I wonder if it would install using bootcamp? No way I'm infecting my Mac, though. If any other Mac user tries, let me know what happens! ^^
Later:
I did some googling, and while Apple does not support it, their are plenty of third parties who have figured out how to put Vista on most Macs. Creepy!
Im using Vista Ultimate one one computer.. still got Xp on this one.

it's said that u'd better not install vista with bootcamp...
and i wanna install vista to have a play with it but i'm using an ibook with ppcG4... and the pc in my home is so old, it's bought in last century...
The moment I heard they were actually rendering 3d buttons I lost the desire to "upgrade" to vista. It seems like a terrible waste of resources. I'll keep using XP until it stops doing what I need it to.
well when you have a shit ton of extra resorces like some people (me) you can do things like vista...as computers get faster it wont be that bad anymore. Hell I still remember when I couldnt upgrade to win95 cus my computer was too slow
Quote from: "Myrdin"The moment I heard they were actually rendering 3d buttons I lost the desire to "upgrade" to vista. It seems like a terrible waste of resources. I'll keep using XP until it stops doing what I need it to.
Vista does have the option to use the classic interface, which would cut down on the graphics requirements.
My system is not at all slow. It's just that I don't like such a frivolous thing consuming resources.
Athlon 64 X2 4400 OC'd 10%
2 gigs DDR2 800 3-3-3-5
GB NVidia 7800 OC'd 15%
More importantly, I could build another tube amp for the price of the Vista upgrade. Tube amps are splendiferous.
I think my general reaction is: "Wow, this is cool!" but at the same time "They spent six years building features I can't/won't use?!?"
All in all, it's a good operating system, but just not financially feasible.
I'm way too paranoid for vista. Mister Gates will probably just add some master control program in the automatic updates someday and take over the world, so, pass.
...wait a minute, why the hell hasn't he done that yet?
NejinOniwa, XP already phones home a lot of info!
I will use Windows Vista when pigs with green polkadots fly past my window!
Haha,... just be thankful I only have wings so far, but no green polkadots yet. ^^;
The commercial release of Vista is still just another beta test with prettier packaging. Add to that their questionable love for DRM and the draconian security (more like surveillance) features (plus the prospect of more added with each service pack), and you've got something /Cchan wouldn't touch even if they paid me to.
(Or they could pay me to use it, and I'll just quickly sell it to some gamer who'd sooner trade in his rights for the latest WoW expansion. -v-')
Here's hoping the Vista-tans (sailor fuku and co.) are about as successful as Zune-tan. -v-'
The pig dosent support vista? Noooo Waaay! Thats a shocker!! I would have never seen that comming :P
If you had supported it I would have expected to see clouds of locus out side and my tap running blood. Maybe a few firey hail stones.
Anyhow, I personaly like the interface, but seems a little macish. and as for feature you dont use... thats your issue. If you provide someone with a hammer and they want to continue using a rock.. thats their problem. Tools are ment to be used.
And the wait complaint... why do people keep saying that? What did you WANT to have to replace and relearn your operating system a year after you bought it? Hell thats why I jumped form 95 to ME, I really didnt need the one inbetween.
Im not a huge supporter of it, but someone has to give a counter argument or things dont stay interesting. I also dont belive its as bad as everyone is complaining it is.. but some people bitch just to bitch. Hey its another MS product, lets look up everying wroung with it and complain like hell! go mac, go linux!! Honestly I dont think most of you have even given it a chance. But like it or not, its here, and microsoft is still around.
As for the cost argument.. I wouldnt know. That copy of ultimate Im using was free. It pays to live with a computer consultant for a big company. Amazing how you can give something a fair test and run when you dont have any predispositions towards it, be it negitive sentiments about its manufacturer or its price.
Well i'm definetly not going to use it yet, but hey here's some nice news for you:
I HAVE A WINDOWS VISTA DEMO POD AT SCHOOL :D

I have experienced it fail 2 tasks: open a .tar.gz file and resize a window properly. While the first can be solved by installing 3rd party software, the second really annoyed me. During resizing, the widget below the window was drawn and overpainted. It was annoying. And if bugs like that are not fixed, I shudder to see the number of other bugs and security leaks. not to mention that it phones home.
Just my 2 eurocents.
So basically from what I've read Vista is a big waste of time
No, Vista is a good operating system, but a bit extraneous. Test it out before you decide anything. I personally prefer other OS's, but my best friend adores Vista and has declared my room an "Abomination." All except for my Vista PC
QuoteAmazing how you can give something a fair test and run when you dont have any predispositions towards it, be it negitive sentiments about its manufacturer or its price.
True, but I didn't pay for mine either. Perhaps I am predisposed against it, but I did my best to approach it openly. Microsoft has, thus far, done well in dominating the market, and they do deserve credit. Besides, we wouldn't be having this discussion if M$ had made ME stable! ^^;
I think i'll stick with xp for a good while Vista can wait for now. But I'll Torrent it one day and if I don't like it I'll just get rid of it.
I ain't going to change to Vista. If I found the nuts to change my OS, I will look for a Linux distro. I know Linux isn't as supported as Win, but (at least) I will not waste my money in a sucking OS.
QuoteI think i'll stick with xp for a good while Vista can wait for now
Good choice. If I had to pay, I'd still be running Win 2000.
QuoteIf I found the nuts to change my OS, I will look for a Linux distro
Better choice, as long as your not looking for games that is. (Note: My opinion only)

Interesting reading for anyone thinking of "upgrading" to Vista in the near future. Certainly making me think twice
Hmmm that's quite a problem there... although I'd have to look for more reviews of Vista before I make up my mind.
Not going to install Vista anytime soon, since 3D performance is generally lower as the OS and drivers are so new. XP works fine for me for the time being, and since I don't have any DX10 hardware, there's no rush, really. It did after all take about 2.5 years before I went from Win2k to WinXP. =P
one thing very difficult for users is that vista has too many versions to choose which one to use>_<
i guess maybe vista-tan could be not only one tan just like XP^o^
Like Linux-tan and the distro-tans, you mean?
My computer blew recently so my new one will be ready to run Vista hardware wise - I'll probably wait a little longer before actually switching to it though
... I think I may have to postpone my Vista installation for next month... damn OEM's aren't even expected to have Vista anytime this month here -_-;;;
Wise, in my opinion...also i don't want to switch to vista-crap because of the hells you'll have to go through to do what you want with it, and the fact that it's an even bigger memory hoggard and waste than XP. Also, because it's just fanboy shit (those idiots) and because "everyone" says that all the new stuff released won't support the old OSes (a promise i am determined to prove wrong). Also i just kind of like my XP pro, so...screw that.
I've found a cool freeware that can chage XP and Server 2003 UI to look like Vista. Wanna try? Here!
http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/OS-Enhancements/Vista-Transformation-Pack.shtml
Note:
1. Before installing, I recommend you to set a system restore point first. Because It'll change the values in some system files.
2. As the developer says. DO IT AT YOUR OWN RISK!
But for me. It seems no problem so far. Just the slightly slow loading.
I already have the setup DVD , too bad Vista doesn't support GeForce4 MX. Damn, need to change my graphic card.
Heard several instances of Vista not supporting most modern PCs and people having to buy new ones that have Vista on them.
And here's where things get stupider...
The Zune is not compatible with Vista! That's right! M$'s music player is not compatible with their next generation OS! (Actually I'm not sure about that anymore because they might have fixed that though)
And incidentally, neither are selling too well. Hmm...
Well, Vista does run on nice configs... (This page is not translated: http://winhistory.de/more/386/vistamini.htm Do you trust me that it says an AMD K5 90 MHz as well as 224 MB of RAM are enough?) Even though they are far less amazing than the XP on 8MHz, which winhistory.de (well, its users) managed to acheive. http://winhistory.de/more/386/xpmini_eng.htm
Running nice however is another issue and there I totally agree with you, the requirements are horrible.
Just for some amusement, I tried to install Vista today, and it worked! But the downside was that Aero wouldn't activate at all, and my GeF4MX got 1.0 mark in performance rating :(.
Well, I guess it's time to migrate to Vista now.
I can help you migrate to a Unix! It's more secure, it's free and it will not phone home. Did I mention that it looks better?
Edit: scnr
What does Vista look like without the Aero interface?
From what I've seen, it looks like Windows classic if you disable the Aero interface.
You mean like the GUI of 95, 98, ME and 2000 (and XP by default)?
Wikipedia Windows Vista (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_Vista)
Yup.
There's a section showing Vista in its different GUI's, including Windows Aero, Vista Basic, and Classic.

im agree whit zerodin ....
Why ? because ... y think that vista was a resource waste ....
vista need a lot of resources for a little less than mac os ....
but ... if you want to try ....
Try
i'll keep myself with XP for another few years, since most of the interface were new, i dun think that i'll should be hasty in switching windows.
but anyway to those who want to try it, then go on.
Vista still has stability issues specially when it comes to hardware compatibility. but it is relatively more secure than XP. ^_^
I am sure the DRM will rip open completely new holes. :)
I used ultimate and when I was trying fsutil...well, take a look.
One reason why I haven't touched Vista in almost a month.
I am sticking on having XP on my laptop. Too much of a pain to try to update all of my programs and drivers (including drivers specialy for Dell XPS such as adjustable LED).
Eventhough my laptop can handle running Vista (I have tried it through a virtualization program), but as I said before, I dont want to go through the headache.
A relative of mine has a computer running Vista. She has had problems running a printer off of a wireless router, constant pop-ups for updates, and slow running speed on a Core 2 Duo. It's been a headache for months, and I hope that the next service pack comes out soon.
Mm, I'm not really leaning towards gettin a Vista, m' trusty XP doin fineso far so why get rid of it. Maybe when my XP crashes or somethin I'll think about it...

"Win Vista it's only for advanced users" saidme a teacher in my unversity because he is an Software ingeniery, but the thing is that is rigth because is complicated for all users that don't know anything more chat or some more.
Too many people callme asking if i can intall Win XP or another OS and said that vista have too much problems with games, programs, other things.
The true is that Vista need more development and be more easy to use for all
I did hear that Vista is a bit of a nightmare for developers, aside from that SP1 won't be released until an unspecified time in 2008 and will require developers to switch to a new set of APIs (routed to a Windows Security Center), thus potentially creating more incompatibility problems than it has already.
Speaking of which, I had to try out Office 2007 the other day in order to convert docx files to doc (a prerequisite to purging Windows Vista and setting up an XP/PCLinuxOS system on my friend's machine). ^^'
It wasn't an ugly prorgram, but by GAWD it looked like they tried too hard to make it look futuristic (my friend said it looked "Mac-like". I honestly didn't know if I was editing a Word Doc or surfing through Windows Media Player. ^^;
Furthermore, anyone who might quip about OpenOffice's layout being 5% different than Office 2000/2003 would probably fair worse with 2007. EVERYTHING is out of order and the fact that I use Word and Excel every single day at work didn't help much. ^v^;
Even if you don't plan on migrating to another OS, save your money and stick with what's proven to work (consider an "upgrade" to Windows 2000 even.... ^___^;)
Well.....
With the Commision proven that M$ CAN be beaten by the law, it's possible that more changes to their attitudes may happen.
Then again, they might just also set right the other way and safeguard all they can what they've got left.
Hells how i hate proprietarism...
QuoteIt wasn't an ugly prorgram, but by GAWD it looked like they tried too hard to make it look futuristic (my friend said it looked "Mac-like". I honestly didn't know if I was editing a Word Doc or surfing through Windows Media Player. ^^;
That's one of my biggest pet-peeves with Vista. The GUI just about gave me a headache ;)
I'm at a point where I dislike Aero; I don't like Luna either and Luna with a glassy theme has even run it's course. At this point, all I want it an interface that just gets it done as efficiently and simply as possible.
Sure, shiny stuff is pretty and all, but when did OSs become more about looks and less about power, performance, stability and security, and just generally "working"?
Quote from: "Bella"Sure, shiny stuff is pretty and all, but when did OSs become more about looks and less about power, performance, stability and security, and just generally "working"?
When Micro$oft realized that the general consumer don't NEED all the fancy performance stuff as much as they need the fancy WINDOW FLIPPING stuff.
The first thing I do after installing an OS, is turn off all that stuff. When they add more crap, just more work for me. ;014
QuoteWhen Micro$oft realized that the general consumer don't NEED all the fancy performance stuff as much as they need the fancy WINDOW FLIPPING stuff.
;014 True that.
I used to spend tons of time prettying up my desktop, adding widgets and looking for 3rd-party themes and stuff...
...but then I realized, what the heck am I doing? How does this make my computer any more secure, any faster, any better at running PS or Inkscape or a word processor. I guess what I'm trying to say is, with a computer, beauty is as beauty does, and my measure of beauty is how well it runs.
I feel like I've had a real OS-awakening (<- XD).
^Agreed.
Substance>Style
Although a little extra style can be really nice when it doesn't come at the cost of functionality or, as you said, security.
Having your cake and eating it too, so to speak. ^___^
I've heard that the GIMP developers wanted to focus on the functionality first before focusing on the UI (which is probably the reason why I'm not alone in thinking the program's a bit awkward to use. What that means, though, is that now that most of the functions they want are already in place for version 2.4, then can freely focus on updating the User Interface for version 2.6. Then perhaps if they're successful, it can really turn into a viable open source Photoshop alternative.
(personally, though, I still want to put my money on Krita... ^.^)
In any event, I'm very overjoyed to hear that you've had an OS-awakening, Bella-san. Always remember that people sent satellites into orbit and astronauts to the moon using computers that weren't even 1/1000th of the computing power of K8! UNIX-sama began her great reign in an era where CRT monitors were unheard of!! ^__^
It ultimately boils down to the person using the machine....
As long as you're empowered, and have the will and knowledge to foster that empowerment, you can fly high even with the Hacchan/Puppy-chan Compaq! ^v^
In a way, my greatest gripe with Vista (and associated products) is that it has gone to the greatest lengths of any Windows systems to strip the user of any power.
QuoteIn any event, I'm very overjoyed to hear that you've had an OS-awakening, Bella-san. You know, I have friends who use ME(!) and are fairly happy with it ;)
But I do see your point, even though I was mostly speaking of the physical aspects of OSs, IE, their GUIs. I guess a good way to summarize my thinking now is, "give up beauty and put an end to your troubles" XD
Not that I don't appreciate a nice-looking OS, but I'll take performance over looks any day.
To be honest, I'm starting to see how some folks can go without a GUI...! Though I think that'd even be a bit to complicated for my liking : |
QuoteIn a way, my greatest gripe with Vista (and associated products) is that it has gone to the greatest lengths of any Windows systems to strip the user of any power.
Yes, that's one of my problems with it too, but I also don't like to support stupidity and self (or in their case, company)-destructive behavior ;014
Plus, I think I'm pretty attached to XP in a strange way. I don't think any new Windows could ever stack up against XP, I don't think I could ever use another version of Windows without constantly nitpicking about it : |
The last friday night, just for trying I install Vista Bussnes Edition(that my univesity give me with a "free of cost" license (that is really true!) ;054 ) in my small pc (3 HDs and 384 Ram with 2 Win XP pro and a W98), but the case is that I was think that didn't work because of the ram it's less than the Minimum requirements (512MB Ram) but when the installation finished and reboot my pc Vista started to start smoothly, a little slow but smooth
So I tried a little, but I delete it occupied a lot of space and it was very slow for my taste.
I prefer to continue using the XP every possible
Is it really worth it?
I need to know before getting my new computer later this year. Can anyone give me info on it's gaming? 8D
Well if you have a system that can handle vista, it can handle any game you want to throw at it. Plus alot of microsoft games are vista only now, like Halo 2 PC. Gaming has traditionaly been microsofts market so I can assume it does a good job at that.. but I couldnt be sure myself. I currently dont use it for gaming whenever I do PC game.
While I may despise Vista with every fiber of my brutal being, I have to agree with the Cap'n on this one. If you truly want to be on the bleeding edge of computer gaming (read: the latest computer games), you'll want to use Vista. Most everything, if not everything, new runs on DX10, which, last time I checked, will only run on Vista. Even as a hardcore Linux user, I must say that Windows still has the edge when it comes to mainstream PC gaming (yeah, I know, that's an oxymoron). Repeat, I would only recommend Vista if you are dead-set on staying ahead of curve when it comes to PC games, otherwise, I'd say stick with XP.
^ I concur -__- I'm no expert on games, but one would think I'd be practical for M$ (or the game manufacturers) to even try to make their new programs work with XP, seeing as so many people still use it.
Of course, it makes people have to switch to a newer OS if the games stop working for the older version, so yeah, it is a good idea from an M$ standpoint (IE, you can't play Halo 2 unless you have M$ Vista or an M$ Xbox...do they even make it for any other consoles?)
Although, I don't game on my computer (unless you count PS or Inkscape XD), so I'm free and clear on this one :P
From my standpoint, I do not like this OS, is not very compatible with games that work very well in win 98 or XP (For example Final Fantasy 7 with XP Path), also is almost incompatible with many emulators consoles.
Besides reading Micro $ oft according wants forcing everyone to use PCs that support Vista and his software and games
Hear ye, hear ye,....
I'm issuing a Windows ME advisory for Windows Vista, given that Windows 7 (fka, BlackComb, Vienna) has been on the news lately:
http://www.osnews.com/story.php/18804/Thoughts-on-MinWin-Windows-7-and-Virtualisation/
...and just in time to cover up lagging sales. It is possible for history to repeat itself, and the unpopularity of Vista can help bolster sales of the subsequent platform. However, 2010 is not 2001,... aside from the greater sophistication in the alternatives, M$ is also obliged to adhere to strict licensing/surveillance schemes and DRM, which could possibly get worse by then. It's no accident that they've allied themselves with Novell, Linspire, Xandros and TurboLinux, since their stake in these companies act as a sort of failsafe measure in case their OS dominance can't be maintained indefinitely.
Gaming is a tough nut to crack, but developers will inevitably go wherever the money is. I'd personally wish more companies adopted a Ransom Model for games -- after a set profit margin is reached, the source for the game is released and freed forever.

WEEEELLL.....
There are at least SOME things that are supposed to be "Vista Only" that can still be played on XP.
...like for example, Halo 2 "vista". Yes, I have tried it out personally, and it works flawlessly. Also an open source XP version of DX10 is being worked on by third parties - although I wouldn't trust my rendering to that any time this week, something like it might be complete in the future.
There IS hope for the old busty lady, and there sure is a horde of users willing to fight for her.
I have XP on my desktop and Vista on my laptop. I find Vista runs fine and it looks nice, but I don't have any real need to upgrade my desktop to Vista. Vista just doesn't seem to have anything anyone absolutely needs to do anything.
I have Xp-tan on my computer

NEWSFLASH, newfag:
THAT WAS SUMMER 2007 AND VISTA WAS[/b] A CRAPSACK WITHOUT A SINGLE SERVICE PACK RELEASED AND AS UNSTABLE AS A DOMINO BUILT OUT OF SAND.
It may be slightly different now, but please. (plus, that was on a computer in the house we rented =not mine, fgs, thus UAC was not to be disabled.)
Also, I had Vista on LAMBDA for ~half a year. A month or so after buying her I got DELTA upgraded to Win7, and was very pleased with the result; ever since then I was bugged to varying degrees with the small, annoying differences between 7 and Vista. I didn't upgrade because of fear of losing the little awesome drivers and apps and functionality I bought LAMBDA for in the first place (like the cool GemstoneBlue media controller, etc) - however, in february she started bluescreening uncontrollably whenever you as much as touched the USB ports, which finally drove me past the turning points. The upgrade was a bit of a hassle, true, and some of the applets aren't entirely functional yet (bluetooth) or work differently; however, she runs better, she's more beautiful and LESS NOISY SOMEHOW, and generally possesses the flair and awesomeness that a good 7 computer has. Besides, some of the built-in stuff is working even BETTER after the upgrade...so yeah. I call fair trade and more than that.
TL;DR - Vista is slow, compared to 7 and XP. Vista is annoying, compared to 7 and XP (for other reasons than UAC, crapsack). Vista is slightly less buggy now thanks to the two (2!) Service packs (or security packs, I dunno what) that have been released - it is still, however, WAY buggier than Windows 7 - and that's despite all the "new OS compatibility problems" and "x64->x86 wow problems" that are around for 7. Believe me, Vista is only "good" until you've seen a properly configured 7 (I assume you're too modern to use an obsolete OS like XP).
PS: No, you're just a fag (and a necro, to boot), and you should be grateful Aurora isn't here hammering you for being a pain in the general ass of the forum.
Have a nice day,

No one is going to get banned as long as a flame war doesn't start. Bumping a thread that's been dead for two years generally isn't cool, but there's still some room for meaningful discussion in this thread.
But if no one is interested, or this topic gets out of hand, I'll lock it.
Yeah, but necroing AND quoting a 3-year old post...? That's just raw bite, man. Plus it got personal. -v-;
Anyway, /ragemode was a bit too much, perhaps - but a lockdown would be appreciated.
admit though, it was a pretty good counter-flame -w-
seconded. newfag shouldn't be taking a high-and-mighty attitude when he only has 6 POSTS TO HIS NAME. it's an opinion thing, and he treats it like we're calling the nazis saints. personally, i HATE vista. the thought of someone UPGRADING to VISTA makes me wanna barf, and just ask, "why, why do yo hate your computer so much??"
i am dealing with an early version of vista, which is probably why i feel this way. i find windows 7, while a little slow on my computer, to be MILES (or kilometres if you're in europe or elsewhere) ahead of vista. argo's MUCH faster on the uptake of certian things than this piece o' crap i'm on right now ("family" computer), hasn't crashed once and despite being a hacked copy on a homemade system, runs something lovely.
pps: i'm against THAT GUY.
lockdown for old topic that doesn't really have much left to say...
You and Nejin make a point, but was harsh and we don't want a new member to feel unwelcome and be scared away by this.
This thread being so outdated, it'll be closed. If all of you want to continue debating the merits/lack of Vista, you can start a new thread, but KEEP IT CIVIL!
