Okay, so I'm not one to do forum games but I think this would be a good supplement to the Japanese learning thread. I'd like to focus more on grammar in the Japanese learning thread, since it's kinda boring just listing a bunch of words.
Here we'll play shiritori, where I say a word, and the next person needs to think of a word that starts with the last syllable of the previous word.
For example:
1) shiritori しりとり
2) ringo リンゴ
3) gomi ごみ
The game ends when someone thinks up a word that ends in 'n' 「ん」
No Japanese word starts with the 'n' sound. If someone does that (admittedly, that'll be harder in a forum format), we start over with a new word. Also, only nouns are permitted.
Sounds good? For every word, I'll add the kanji (if applicable) and hiragana pronunciation. For readability, I ask that any japanese characters be given a bigger size than default. I set it at 12 here. I also link the word in the jisho.org dictionary, since it shows you stroke order too. In the next post, I will start.
映画
えいが
movie, film
Kanji link: http://jisho.org/kanji/details/%E6%98%A0%E7%94%BB
i love shiritori! i first saw it in xXxHolic, and in fact made a forum game based on it (i didn't know the japanese name so i called it something in english. it should be a page back or so, i think). my only request is that we also include the pronunciation in romaji, since i don't know how to pronunce any of it with the native characters yet, and i'm willing to bet i'm not the only one. it makes it easier for me to respond, too, since i don't have to go digging for kanji to form a word. ><;;
画 家
がか
"gaka"
Painter, Artist
http://jisho.org/kanji/details/画家
Alrighty then. But I hope you're learning the kana! I feel very very strongly that people should be reading hiragana/katakana as opposed to straight romaji. Not knowing the kanji is fine, but reading kana is a must.
体
からだ
romaji: karada
defn: body
http://jisho.org/kanji/details/%E4%BD%93
だし
Romaji:Dashi
it's a kind of soup
dashi stock is actually rather tasty, though finding the ingredients for it is a bitch. i've had to substitute for the most part.
汁
しる
"Shiru"
Juice, Sap, Dipping Sauce
http://jisho.org/kanji/details/汁
haha, yes, like Choco says, it is a fish based soup stock, and is a very common ingredient in Japanese cuisine. Most notably, miso soup.
Man, 'ru' is a tough one...
Well, I figured that I would give you a English loanword like ルール ('ruuru'; rule), but that's not that helpful in learning new vocab. Call it cheating, but I will share a new word I just looked up and learned. haha
累囚
るいしゅう
'ru i jo u'
prisoner
http://jisho.org/kanji/details/%E7%B4%AF%E5%9B%9A
Now to repeat it 10 times and write it out a couple more times. lol
i'm not gonna call it cheating since the purpose of this thread is to learn, right? -w-
also, miso soup is damn tasty. but the one time i made it it all ended so horribly. guess some things are better left to professionals.... ;v;
囚われ
とらわれ
'towara-re'
"imprisonment; captive"
http://jisho.org/kanji/details/囚われ
(you might want to copy+paste the link since for some reason they don't count kanji as "real" in web addresses)
For the record, shiritori is based on ending /syllable/ not kanji, but I'll go along anyhow. (so technically you should have used 'u')
When I copy/paste from chrome, I get the unicode stuff for the kanji, so it works okay.
*thinks*....................lol okay, this works I guess:
錬金術
れんきんじゅつ
ren kin ju tsu
"alchemy"
http://jisho.org/kanji/details/%E9%8C%AC%E9%87%91%E8%A1%93
oh, sorry, i figured that was it, but i didn't want to assume.
(lol jutsu)
術後
じゅつご
jutsugo
"Postoperative" (lolwut)
http://jisho.org/kanji/details/術後
haha, but you did it again! (This time the syllable was "tsu")
ゴキブリ
'go ki bu ri'
cockroach
(No kanji for this one, just katakana)
but here's a picture of gokicha~ haha
(http://i.imgur.com/WFBhgxI.jpg)
i had a feeling! but the kanji had both the syllables smooshed together. ><;;
竜胆
りんどう
Rindou (ri-n-do-u)
"Bellflower"
http://jisho.org/kanji/details/竜胆
http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/竜胆
(Rin from Usagi Drop, named for the Rindou. :3)
家
uchi / uchie
Home.
小さい
ちいさい
Chiisai (chi-i-sa-i)
"small, tiny"
(my last name 8D )
Ahh... it's been a while. Sorry about that.
イチゴ
i-chi-go
Strawberry
ご飯
ごはん
Go-ha-n
Cooked Rice; Meal
(sorry i killed it, but it was the first word that came to mind -w-)
奈留
Na-ru
dude, re-read the first post, nothing starts with -n. so i'll assume you're restarting the chain with a new word. but in the event that you were going off the last syllable of my word, that's wrong.
what does naru mean, anyway?
留守番
るすばん
Ru-su-ba-n
"care-taking, caretaker"
and because that would kill it again,
留守番電話
るすばんでんわ
Ru-su-ba-n-de-n-wa
"Answering Machine"
Naru appears to be a name...
I'd discourage it, but I won't disallow it completely.
笑い
わらい
wa-ra-i
"1) laughter 2) smile"
Incidentally, the verb form, 「笑う」 "warau" is where the japanese form of "lol", "www," originates. (They can't be bothered to write the whole word, so they just write the single "w". Ah, internet.)
ahh, so THAT'S what those comments on NND mean. i always thought the "wwww" had to do with something involving moe. thanks for clearing that up.
医薬
いやく
I-ya-ku
"Medicine"
hehe now you know the most basic Japanese net-jargon. :3
Here's something with a very basic kanji that shouldn't be too hard to learn:
口
くち
ku-chi
(n) "mouth"
Stroke order is here:
http://www.mahou.org/Kanji/387D/#drawing
^ that site also has sentence examples and other nifty things.
知性
ちせい
Chi-se-i
"Intelligence"
(thanks for dat site, bro.)
インド
i-n-do
India
As in Indian Curry: インドカレー (i-n-do-ka-ree)
Why India? Cuz I thought of this Japanese meme of them synchronizing bollywood dance numbers to j-pop and anime themes.
Indian Dance: インドダンス (i-n-do-da-n-su)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1HN1--k9VH8
如何して
どうして
Do-u-shi-te
"Why??? (for what reason; how; in what way; for what purpose; what for)"
手紙
てがみ
Te-ga-mi
Letter (lit. "hand paper")
QuoteNo Japanese word starts with the 'n' sound.
