Well, given that the filenames all start "MVC-", is it a Sony Mavica? Those things are awesome!

Yeah, I knew the filename would make it easy to recognise.

The exact model is a FD7, early model with the 10x zoom.

Dug out a sacrificial floppydisk for it, and couldn't have found a better specimen.

DUDE, hell yes
Those are so iconic, I've always wanted one myself.
I wonder if I can find some on Facebook market place?

RIP Mcafee

I just grabbed this one off ebay for about 50bucks. Japanese seller said it had a "read error" but it was pretty clear they were using either a corrupted/protected or unformatted disk to test it.

They seem much more common on the US market. Seen a good bunch of them for just as low as 10bucks on ebay.

Was out about with the Mavica today.

Really has that early 00s "just learning photography" vibe.

Man I love that. Like looking back in time.

I guess its the 1 year anniversary for me regarding my return to OSC.

Not sure if I'm just imagining it, but the site does feel bit more alive than a year ago.

It definitely feels more alive now. It's been amazing to see!

I think I have a problem. Now I own 2 Mavica cameras.

The FD85 quality is kinda unfair compared to the older FD7. Maybe bit too good, as it just starts to look like any typical digital camera of the early 00s.

You could convince me that new pic was taken with a modern camera.

Its 1280x960, so really not that far from early iPhones, or even just a downscaled image off a iPhone4.
With maximum quality you can only get something like 6 photos on a single floppy.

Dropping the quality down to 640x480 starts to give more the original FD7 look, but due to how the sensor works on FD7, it still doesn't get the true crustyness with the FD85.
MVC-005S.JPG

Early Mavicas actually use a video camera sensor, so the image is scanned as an interlaced picture, which does give early Mavicas that somewhat jaggy picture quality. FD85 has already a sensor that scans the entire field in a single go. No interlace splicing that would cause artefacting.

Bella

Nifty, it's cool to see the increase in photo quality. It looks clearer but still has a retro feel IMO.

Only 6 images a floppy!? Makes you wonder how many floppies avid users of those cameras would have brought around.

I think the interlacing of the sensor is a bit of the charm.

Early Mavicas could store up to 40 pictures on lowest quality. That's more than what a 35mm roll of film could do. Those were usually either 24 or 36 shots per roll.

Oh yeah, the FD85 supports MPEG video. It's video quality is gloriously crusty. And only 5 second snippets.
