Quote from: "Icelilly"I never really thought of myself as talented since in the eight grade since I got told that my writings sucked and even my own art teacher used to yell at me because I never did anything right.
Never believe to what art teachers say... some of the greatest artists used to suck at school... even my art teacher yelled at me in the eighth grade!

By the way... I still suck in art!
I implore you to forgive my speaking of English, as I'm not so premium with it.

YO Lilly-san!!  Lillllllllllllly-saaaaaaaaaaaaan!!!  ^v^

See how good things happen when you actively participate?  Now your stamps have become a rave, and how!  ^.^

I should note that as you practice more and more with Photoshop, you'll start to get familiar with ways that you can decrease time expenditure.  Sounds like your chipping away at the backgrounds using the eraser tool, and while this guarantees more precision and certainly helps improve hand-eye coordination over time, you might consider testing out the Lasso and Magic Wand tools if you ever need a faster way to get rid of backgrounds (such as when have lots of homework to do... ^.^; ).

Just my 2 cents about the teacherr thing, if you don't mind....

I actually expected better from the land of the glorious and free, but guess you'll have your stuck-up in every school.  ^v^
Regardless, I won't chew the guy out completely for the very simple reason that... art is a very unsubjective thing and difficult to teach in an institutionalized school setting.  He therefore has no choice but to grade you on how well you can imitate HIS style, and not necessarily with coming up with new and original art forms on your own.

I, like you, had it very rough with my old intermediary school art teacher.  I loved to draw with colored pencils prior to that, and always considered myself uniquely detailed (if perhaps not terribly precise,... unsteady hand after all), but for some reason everything I threw at this guy never seemed to please him.

First drawing:  too stale.
Second drawing, one which I thought I poured my best in:  too busy
Third one:  week shadowing.
Fourth one:  bad perspective.

Obviously I'm cleaning this up, as our arguments usually got fairly heated.  Needless to say, it was pretty discouraging, but fortunately there was one ray of hope....

While it wasn't altogether clear to me then, I can say in retrospect that a lot of my initial failings were the result of trying to do exactly what he told me, which never quite jived with me because my artistry leaned elsewhere.  The man had 40 years of experience over me in Abstract Realism, so how could I, in such a short span, hope to produce the kind of works that perhaps he, in his mind, wished he could see from his students?

After all, many teachers have actual backgrounds in whatever the heck they teach, and an art teacher who's used to creating his own stuff may find it unnerving that, year after year, he has to deal with kids who may not be able to grasp what he might consider "simple".  And moreover, if the teacher has a particular social conscience, he might be well aware that public school art classes are just mandated filler, and that over half of his would-be pupils neither like nor ever hope to be artists themselves.  This, in essence, turns his class into one annual waste of time, thus leading to the short fuse that my own art teacher clearly had.  ^^

By the time I got to my last assignment, it was pretty clear that I would fail the course and was quite bitter for it.  The assignment called for creating a Graphic Type Face, and although logic would dictate that I follow the instructions TO THE LETTER, by then my pride was sufficiently hurt that I really didn't care for my grade and entered what I'll affectionately call as "F*ck It" mode.  ^___^

I trashed all my notes and documents, pulled out my own case of colored pencils (which I hadn't used since I first began the silly class), and started pouring my heart and soul onto paper.  If I couldn't imitate his style, then by GAWD I would make the most of my own strengths and work with my own limitations, to create a Type Face that was uniquely me.

And so I worked on, seemingly possessed of madness, but feeling happier than I ever felt throughout the entire year.  And guess what,... I might have flopped my previous assignments, but somehow I pulled in a lot of what I learned about shading and perspective almost by accident -- a perfect marriage of the old, plus the new artistic elements that I really liked, but simply couldn't enjoy until now that I was applying it myself.  Moreover, I even started inventing my own lighting elements too, something which was never covered in class but that I just got inspired by due to a vision I had in my head.

In the end I produced something which I genuinely loved and which i could genuinely expressed who i was and not what grade I wanted to beg for.  And believe me when I say that nearly eight months of animosity between him and I disappeared the moment he saw that drawing -- he went as far as to stop the entire class just to pull up the illustration for everyone to see.  He loved it, and I was shocked that he loved it, but so it was that it saved my grade and it ended up decorating his office for the next three years.

Long after i left his class we talked about it for a while, and indeed he told me that he appreciated the effort and originality, and that he was sorry if he came off as a bastard.  He was so used to disenfranchised youth, that he long since lost the motivation to foster genuine interest in his students.  It became bad enough for him to consider retirement not long after I had graduated.  However, I did agree with him and considered ourselves to be both on the same boat,... wrestling with and loathing each other, but never really communicating or fostering each other's talents.  On that day I was able to truly study his office and view many of his incredible paintings, but I never once did that during actual class time.  Likewise, he never saw any of my old or contemporary drawings, and so was left with the impression that I was completely disinterested in art.

So while I gave him my drawing and a ray of hope as a parting gift, I believe he reciprocated in kind, both by offering me that tiny boost of motivation that I needed to keep my interest alive and growing....

...And by making me understand that art is more about communication than it is the actual style.  Style, after all, is not universally praised -- we may LOVE Anime cel-shading, but a neo-classical painter may consider it an ABOMINATION and your average mom-n-pop will just consider them "cartoons" with boobs.  But what that art medium CONVEYS is really what's most important -- and the reason why Anime works has more to do with making their characters ALIVE rather than just flashy.

That's why I consider it very important to motivate people who are just starting out with drawing, or collaging or video editing, or writing or whatever....

I don't look to see whether it sucks or not, but I'm more interested in seeing what the creator wants to say to me through this.  if you think you suck at drawing, I see that more as a lack of self-confidence rather than skill.  Ergo,... if I help boost your confidence,... then logic only follows that your work wiill "suck" less.  After all, a self-confident person is a person with hope and a vision for the future.  And a hopeful, confident person,... has more well to practice and experiment and evolve in new and exciting ways.  ^^

Hot damn, I made another monologue.  ^_____^;

Oh well, I think that's more 2 Twoonies rather than 2 cents, but I'm sure you understand what I'm trying to say.

Please keep working hard, Lilly-san..... ^.^

And if you need a push from your old, peach juice-loving pig friend.......... I have a few things that can up the ante while making for a great learning opportunity:

GemOS-tan

Yoper-tan

Icelilly

Thank you all for your kind words minna! ^___^

I had no idea the stamps would become such a big part of the forum. Sometimes I do suprise myself! ^__^

I'm starting to run out of ideas of what other stamps I should do. Do you guys have any requests for me? ^.^

@Alfamille- You're on Bulbagarden?! O_O; I didn't know you were on there!

@Tsubashi- *giggle* I love my new title. ^.^ But you, too, deserve a fancy title too! ^__^

@C-Chan- I thought "the land of the glorious and free" is the nickname for the US. XD We should be called the "the land of equal rights."

Then again.... Maybe not. ^^;

And thanks for the images! <3

Quote@Alfamille- You're on Bulbagarden?! O_O; I didn't know you were on there!

Well I'm no member there. I'm just searching for some info about Pokemon Colosseum (since I'm still playing it) and I just went on to lurk more around the forums till I saw you there ;)

*ROTFL*

BWAHAAAAAABWAHAHAHAHAHA-BWAAAAAAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!! ;^v^;

No commento, but I will clear things up a little since you're probably thinking about the current American national anthem, the short version of which ends like this:

Quote"O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave."

I say current because that may change depending on whether the NAU becomes a reality or not.  -v-'

And sure you're equal and all, but I'm surprised Lilly-san.  ^___^
*grabs mic*
I go to great pains to memorize this every time I come and visit.  Now, let's sing together, shall we...? -v-

*orchestra starts*

       O Canada!
       Our home and native land!
True patriot love in all thy sons command.

With glowing hearts we see thee rise,
The True North strong and free!

       From far and wide,
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.

God keep our land glorious and free!
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.

O Canada, we stand on guard for thee......
[energized]  Ah yes, I'm feeling....... feeling the need........... the need.... for peach juice!!!  ^v^

    Just be sure this doesn't get swept up in that dreaded NAU either, please oh please.....  -v-;

    Icelilly

    Comin' right up! ^O^

I don't know the American anthem. XD Only the Canadian anthem. ^.^

Very good C-Chan! ^O^ Think you could do the French version of our anthem? ^_~

    C-Chan

    Comin' right up!  ^v^

*quickly Googles info behind the scenes to sound know-it-all*

    *orchestra starts*

      O Canada!
      Terre de nos aïeux,
Ton front est ceint de fleurons glorieux.

Car ton bras sait porter l'épée,
      Il sait porter la croix.

      Ton histoire est une épopée,
      Des plus brillants exploits.

Et ta valeur, de foi trempée,
Protégera nos foyers et nos droits.

Protégera nos foyers et nos droits....!!
Wow, I may have forgotten a lot of French, but I can tell off that bat that the lyrics are radically different from the English version.  '__'

Oh well, as they say, c'est la vie!  ^________^'

Ooooh, how about singing this version of O Canada with me?  ^___^

      *different orchestra starts*

        O'Kanata nangmini Nunavut piqujatii
        Nalattiaqpavut angiglivaliajuti sangijulutillu
        nanqipugu
        O'Kanata mianiripluti
        O'Kanata nunatsia
        nangiqpugu mianiripluti
        O'Kanata salagijauquna
Well okay, the only one thing I recognize there is Nunavut, and only because it was a newly created territory established in 1999, under the direct jurisidiction of an inuit council.  It has a cool flag,...

        And it's own commemorative twoonie:

Owing to the fact that it missed out on the Provincial Commemorative Quarter program, an ancestor to the current American state quarter program and Mexican State Silver $100 Peso program.

I reckon that numismatics does pay off...  ^___^

        Icelilly

Very good again C-Chan! <3 The French verison is very different from the English one. But we don't mind. ^^ And you seem to know some of our Canadian history! I'm impressed. ^___^

Speaking of which, as for who my favorite Canadian lady is (second to you, of course... ^^).... that title would go to the great Anna Haining Swan from Tatamagouche, Nova Scotia.  ^____________^

Even if I make room (sorry 3.1-sama... ^.^), I'm gonna be walking around with more stamps than an Air Mail package to Indonesia!  ^v^

QuoteEven if I make room (sorry 3.1-sama... ^.^)

You could always do what I did, instead of replacing 3.1-sama! I was able to fit almost all the currents stamps in there, though only 11 of them are easily viewable. Not sure what I'm going to do with the new influx though ^^'

        Added after 19 minutes:

QuoteBesides, what would Captain-san say ^.^

You mean besides the ubiquitious "I'm gonna turn you into a sandwich?"

Probably "Oh, okay, I respect your decision to recognize the true Goddess, Windows 95 OSR 2.5-sama.  Don't bother burning me at the stake for the heretic that I am, cause I'll go do that myself."  Mmmm-hmmm,... yeah, that sounds 'bout right....  ^v^

Heck, we are in desperate need of a Pu-chan stamp still.  ^.^

        Bella

Awww!!! I really want the NT-sama stamp, but...

        *blushes*

I dunno how to get the code from our image board (like on DA I just clicked "download" and it opened in a new window...)
