wow, I always thought that DOS was UNIX based and that Windows was and still is (basically) a DOS-Shell (DOS has even managed to creep into Vista)

I thought the same thing at first; While it is true that Unix has had influence, in some way, on just about every OS...DOS, pre-OSX Macs and Windows aren't related to Unix (as Aurora pointed out).

Windows was something of a MS DOS shell until Me. NT-based Windows, including 2k, XP and Vista, aren't related to MS DOS though; their heritage can be found more in VMS and OS/2 than anything else (thus more stability and power than their DOS-based counterparts).

But shhhh...it's a secret ;)
